Battery issues - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I was having issues with my phone over the last few days, it was slaughting my batteries. Had to go to the sprint store and get a new one. I think maybe it's because I installed 1 of the nightly builds a couple of days after Thanksgiving. Right now I'm running CM7.1 stable on it,after I went through 2 batteries figured I should change the rom out. Is there a test to preform so I can ensure it's not a hardware issue vs the nightly build I was running ? I don't wanna have to go throught this again.

I typically run sense ROMs but I have run CM for a little while. What kernel are you using? A friend of mine is running CM7 and is using savaged zen and has pretty good luck with it. I have had bad battery life when switching between ROMs before as well, usually when I swap kernels. Typically it takes a couple days for the ROM to settle in and battery life to get back to normal.
I had terrible battery life with my EVO before I rooted it and ended up buying an extended battery for it before I rooted it. I am currently running the Shooter 3D rom with the chopsuey kernel and I get great battery life out of that. You may want to try a different rom for a few days as well and see if you notice any difference.

If your looking for a ROM that has good battery life and is stable give Energy Sensation XL 3.5 a go it is a very stable ROM with great battery life when you use the stock kernal with it. I was able to get about 30hrs of use before it required a charge.

Hey,
yeah that just sounds like the rom, nightly bulids are most of the time good, but you never know what you are going to get with them. try a differnt kernal or even rom which ever better suits you! Good luck to you! and happy flashing!

new sprint kernal vs cm6 on batt life

i have been running flipz newer rom with the new unreleased kernal and my battery life is AMAZING, I mean very very good. I was thinking about giving CM6 a try again with flashing the new v7.6 kernal thats supposed to be really good.
But I was wondering what people are getting with cm6 and the kernals as far as batt life.
Ive never personally flashed a kernal before so not sure on how well or how much they affect the phone or if its worth it.
any help? like as far as the best kernal for a CM6 rom and and reports on batt life comapred to the new leaked kernal
I'm getting better battery life on stock now, then I was on any other modded kernel (kings, cm6, and some others.)
Nand backup and give it a shot. It seems way to better to me than stock or even cm6 nightly with newest kernel.
also whats the difference between bfs and cfs roms?
i feel batt life with CM6nightly + snap7.6 in turbo mode is about how the phone was when it was first released...you can make it a day with light use, but using it a ton, i seem to get around 8-10 hours.
However...getting 2600+ in Quadrant and no lag, anywhere, ever...makes up for it. I'm always within reach of a USB port or wall outlet so i just carry the charger/cord around with me.
I haven't actually ran it from full to dead outside of work. However at work i constantly drop signal and regain it repeatedly for the 8~ hours i'm here.

MIUI's Battery Life

I decided to try out MIUI coming from Myn's. I didn't think I would stick with MIUI for very long, but it has been about a month and I'm loving it -- for the most part.
I'm running 1.1.28 (which is now pretty outdated, but I haven't felt like updating to the latest weekly) with the Savage 1.6 CFS-HAVS-WiMax. But I am averaging 25+ hours on my standard battery.
I'm tempted to go back to a sense rom, but I can't even imagine getting anything less than 25 hours again. I'm considering Mik, Myns or possibly just CM6/7. Anything that is quick, themed nicely and has 4G.
Anybody getting stellar battery life like that on any other ROMs?
I'm on the same build as you and it's amazing. My advice- stick with it until MIUI releases a big update.
If I turn off my radios(which I do with MIUI also) I can get insane battery life with Ava's.

Have you thought about moving up to the latest? I don't think there is any ROM comparable to 25+ battery life so I'll probably never go back to Sense or CM.... but I do miss the ability to use 4G, FFC, and all that good stuff. Hopefully CM get's that fixed and then MIUI can implement it too. Any bugs bothering you with 1.1.28? I can't tell if it's just my phone or the ROM.
Actually there's a mod for ffc on miui1.28 and 1.24

I don't have any bugs with this build- no FCs, no reboots. Everything works the way it's supposed to. It is easily the best MIUI build I have tried. I haven't flashed any of the later ones but I read that some people are having issues with certain things so I'm going to hold off until they add some awesome new feature and have the bugs that people are complaining about worked out. Right now, it's just not worth my while to update. My 3G speeds are plenty fast (1.25-1.5Mbps down) so I don't really care about 4g. When it comes it comes. I've never used the ffc, even when I was on Sense.
Try cm7 with savage kernel i get
Some insane battery life and that's with moderate use plus the nightlys got 4g running very fast and stable

does this break usb functionality? I flashed Savage and noticed it wouldn't work anymore. It does have good battery life though
Everytime I try MIUI, no matter which kernel I use, I get great battery life but I always have issues with the screen waking up when I press the power button.
With CM7 and the Savage-Zen CFS kernel I get the same battery life as MIUI, from morning until night with fairly heavy use and still around 40% left at bed time.

[Q] Best rom+Kernel to maximize battery life 2.3 :|

i know i know some of you are going to ride my ass for this because there are plenty of other questions asked regarding this.
and if i was using froyo, i'd use ner kernel plus stock sense rom but now that 2.3.4 is out i was hoping to find a rom that would give me the best result on battery life.
i do like the idea of sense look alike roms but i havent found any kernels that would increase my batterylife.
right now i'm on synergy and boy this thing dies fast.
Evervolv has been the most efficient rom i've used but its not sense like
kindly share your thoughts on what you use and what you like and dont like about it. i'd be curious to hear it.

i tried Miui awhileback but too many bugs, no 4g screen went black/white, notification errors and freezes. i followed all their fix, it was good till it went back to the same issue. wiped, reflashed still the same thing.
so until they release another Miui, i think i'll stay away from them for now.
you seem like you've put some time in here, any other recommendations?

They have released other versions and the current is VERY stable, although still no 4G
The other ROMS I got great battery life on were the Froyo ROMs, before the GB ports came out. Koni III for sure with NetarchyToast SBC CFS Havs had incredible battery life, VaelPak is a good ROM , too
I wouldn't recommend MIUI if you're looking for decent battery life. I tried it about two months ago and it was just eating up my battery like crazy. Then when I went back to CM7, battery went back to being spectacular again.

If you're getting all those force closes, then I can only think that you're not doing a full wipe as I outlined in my guide and/or you're not giving it a chance to settle on the first boot ups. I could be wrong, but that is usually the case.
If you just want an updated sense, I use Myn's warm z, its sense 2.0. I also run netarchy's latest w/sbc,cfs,havs,more. And recently I use the incredible voltage app to set the actual voltage range.

[Q] Best ROM for the Wife?

My wife is currently about to enter her last semester of nursing school. She has had an EVO for about 6 months I'd say, which most of that time she was Rooted but on the stock ROM, until she got tired of stuff not working right.
I gave her the Synergy ROM which she took a while to get used to, the only issue she had was text messages not sending, then sending over and over and over. I then convinced her to try CM7, and switched her to Google Voice. Apparently she is getting FC issues, and she claims that battery is just as bad, as well as random reboots. She now wants something that is STABLE above all else, and has battery life that will last her through a day.
What would the best option be? Im opting to go back to Synergy since the texting issue should be fixed with GV, but any way to optimize that battery?
Thanks in advance,
Adam.
Do you have an Airave (sp?)? That will cause the texting issues you describe, at least it does for me and over heard of others having the same problem.
I'd suggest MIUI if she doesn't need 4G, it's been stable for me for almost a year. You have to be careful which build you choose, as some of the newer ones are not stable. If you decide to try it, I can point you towards my favorite build that are known to be stable.
If she does need 4G or just doesn't like MIUI, if say try a close to stock rom. I hear the Mik roms are good, but I've never personally used them. Warm 2.2 was the last Sense rom that I ran. It was a long time ago and is now outdated, but I liked it for the few days I ran it.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
I'd recommend MikG v3.0 or Tommeytomatoes Classic v0.0.5 Finale. She won't have any problems at all and she'll get great battery life as well. Chopsuey kernel pairs up great with MikG.
Sent from my Nifty MikG'd up EVO 4g while eatin some Chop Suey.
Hit that thanks button if I managed to help.
Thanks, flashing MikG now.
We dont have an airave, only way the texting issue happened was with the stock messaging app. Even with CM7 it did until we switched to GV.
My wife had evo for little over a year. We tried pretty much all roms, but always go back to stock. If you want everything to work, then stick with last OTA. My recommendation would be stick with stock. Perhaps get an Anker battery from ebay.
Vaelpak GB or vaelpak rc 3.2 are both quality roms
Sent from my Evo 3d
If she wants aosp go with Deck 1.3d with the LEE kernel. That's what I run and I get great battery life and zero fcs.
If she wants sense Mik 3.0, Classic, and Swag out of stock are great and stable. My wife runs mik 3.0 and loves it. She charges her phone about every other day.

I'd say infected rom eternity. sense 3.5. it's what i'm using right now and in my experience it is super stable. i dont think i've had one FC issue in the past few days i've been running it. battery life is decent also.
My wife is running MikG v3.0. Can't go wrong with a MikROM. I wouldn't trust anything else on her phone, because if there are issues, I'll have to hear about it. And Mik's ROMs don't have any.
Thanks guys, already put MikG 3.0 on it, and she loves it.
I actually thought to try it, and this brought me back to Sense. I've been swearing by AOSP roms for a long time now, and this out lasts them and just feels more stable. It might not be as smooth as AOSP, but the stuff that is supposed to work just works without issue.
Have been running this for 2 days now and I think we're set. Thanks again guys!
Have you tried applying the tweaks from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470921
It might make your phone smoother and faster.
.... Double Post....
CM7 with SavagedZen kernel has always been rock-solid for me with fantastic battery life. Add the supercharger script too and it flies. Seems so much faster than any sense based rom and looks great with the ICS theme for ADW

I was getting ready to make a thread to ask this very question when I saw this one.
It seems that the MikG v3.0 is the way to go. Thanks for the tips.
I am used to Samsung phones, so I am a bit rusty on the EVO, so had a few questions..
Should I return to full stock, get the OTA, then apply this ROM?
Any concerns I should watch out for if I do go back to stock and accept the latest OTA, or do you guys recommend another path to get to the MikG ROM?
I got a pretty good handle on modding, was just looking for a basic highlevel overview of things to watch out for, that I may not have run into on my Samsung devices.

There's no reason to do anything related to the OTA prior to flashing MikG. If you already have a custom recovery (RA-supersonic - if it's CWM, that's the first thing you should change), just nandroid, do a full wipe (everything except SD Card), and then flash the ROM. If you need to backup apps, use my backup pro or Titanium Backup on the current ROM.
Go Deck
If you don't mind ditching a Sense interface for AOSP then I would suggest Deck's Gingerbread ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078558.
Just about tops for the two reasons you seem to be looking at... Stability and battery life.
His new ICS ROM has amazing battery life (over 2 days, single charge) but it's not at a daily-driver stage yet.
Good luck!

Thanks, but Sense needs to stay, she is an iPhone type, if it dont look the same, its to much to handle, no matter what other benefits comes from it.

EDIT: Thanks for the tips, I updated to the newest RA, installed Mik, and restored data, worked like a champ!!!
Appreciate the help!!

My wife's old phone (now handed down to my daughter 5 days ago) and my own are running CM7.2. Very stable, good battery life, I know wifi hotspot with security works 100%, and everything works too,
I've also recently tried tiny's cm10.1, and it was great, full featured and almost everything worked, but it had kinda bad battery life and I did run into enough small bugs (like having to run a script for trackball wake, and other minor annoyances) to cause me to flash back to 7.2.
I haven't tried a sense rom since 3.0 so I cannot help you there.
Everyone enjoys different things, for example my wife doesn't care what she is running as long as it doesn't lag or crash, and she can install and run all of her golauncher/locker/sms/contacts apps.
CM10.1
I'm on CM10.1 and it's pretty good, although the battery life isn't great as it was on a GB rom.

I play bad piggies, and a few other games, all the time.
Tiny's CM10.1 had amazing battery life while the screen was off, seriously - amazing...
but it would lose about 1% per minute with the screen on and doing a lot bit of touching, such as with a game like bad piggies, or texting. It may have been just me, something with the luxe on the install i was running, or something even more mysterious. Not a bad battery, though, because the drain went away when I went back to CM7.2
Just handed down my OG to my 6 year old son a few days ago. We jumped up to GS4.

10.1 has amazing idle/sleep battery life. You get a steady decline with the screen though. With above average use I get around 10-14 hours depending on what I'm doing. With very light usage I've gotten 2 days (I have a 3 week old battery)

Excellent. I've gone 3 days on standby (barely talking/data). Average us you can go 1 full day no problem.
Watching videos or browsing on your commute... have a charger waiting at your destination... but that goes for a stock Inc too.
I've tried rooted stock, CM6, CM7, CM7.1, CM7.2, CM10, and CM10.1 so far on my Inc, and I'd say for merely using it as a dumb device, I'd go with CM6 or rooted stock, oddly enough. It was the last version without any weird quirks like GPS not locking, camera preview messing up, or lower resolution video capture.
Since I still use my Inc as my daily phone, I've been switching back and forth between the last nightly of CM7.2 and whatever's newest (CM10.2 is in the queue to test).

My vote is rooted stock, specifically this one. I use mine as a dashcam mostly, and this is the only one which is fast, has good battery life all around, and works reliablly recording in 'high quality' in autoguard. Granted I have not attempted any 4.x rom since the early ICS builds.
I would never go back to stock on my Inc the cm10.2 is amazing on this phone for speed and stuff unless u need data right now and I think gps locks and works
