[Q] What if I... - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In error I pressed the re-partition in error in odin...what happens?

I was trying to flash clockwork and was rushing

If you used the PIT file it will put your partition table back to stock, which probably means it will be exactly the same for you. Without the PIT it probably will do nothing.

[Q] Restoring "before-ext4-convert"

I have a backup that was made automatically when I updated my phone back in November called "before-ext4-convert-XXXXXXX" and I need to restore it to my phone. I've tried like 3 different versions of Android, all rooted and have been unable to restore the backup. Does anyone know how to restore it? I've been googling around and can't find anything.
Everyone seems to be using EXT4, and going into clockwork always changes the format to EXT4. Any suggestions? I just need some data off of the backup.
this will convert you back to "rfs" format (before ext4)

just transfer the conversion zip file from pc to your phone, then boot into cwm and install the conversion file and you should be good to go.

Again...are you on an MTD ROM. If so you cannot restore old BML backups without Odin to stock with repartition checked and the included pit file. I recommend you do this whether you are on MTD or not.

I don't know what a MTD ROM is. I flashed my phone to sph-d700-dk28-8g-rel.tar.md5 (ODIN) which is stock, and used EXT42RFS.zip. I never have used a PIT file, nor tried it with re-partitioning.
Just tried it with re-partitioning, I get the error: Can't open the specified file - it probably needs a PIT file.
Pit file is included with Odin. Look in the directory you unpacked it in.

Is Re-Partition necessary? It keeps failing "Re-Partition operation failed."
Is using a PIT file necessary? According to other threads "Do not need pit people, it's the full md5."

Yes. It sounds like your partition table is messed up. Did you put the Victory Pit file that came with Odin in the PIT slot? Try it without repartition if you like. Maybe it will work.

Have you tried flashing stock via ODIN? It might fix the partition settings.
I just picked up a phone someone botched and it seems to have this same issue. Internal memory basically is gone. I tried going completely stock via Odin, but the during the flash it would stop at sboot and fail. Anyone happen to find a way to fix this? I'm going to continue troubleshooting it but I have a feeling I'm going to end up with the same result.
What tar file are you trying to flash in Odin?

Need pit file. Phone bricked.

So my phone just stopped working after two days of rooting. I decided to un root it and revert it back to stock with Odin. I downloaded the right file for my phone SGH-M919 but when I tried to flash it. I got there is no pit partition. I tried then using kies and that failed. So I googled s4 pit file and got to a thread that had it. But stupid me thinking that i9505 pit file is the same for my phone because Wikipedia said it was the quad core version which the tmobile is. So now i have a new error for flash.
Please help thank you

So all I would need is that .tar and it would automatically fix the issue? Or do I have to extract the pit and use it another way? I've never had to deal with this myself but some one else is having the same problem and I'm trying to find the answer for the both of us really, I don't want to be blind if this were to happen to myself so I want to find what I need to correct it before it becomes a problem later.

Sounds simple, I've been helping some one from here out a little and either he doesn't understand what he's doing or there's something else wrong that he doesn't know he did in the mean time but that's pretty simple for a fix. He's been "from what I gather" doing that same thing but when it starts it just hangs at the check in Odin. I told him it takes a few minutes before it actually shows progress but he's waited over an hour so maybe he did something to the partitions that's all I can think of that would cause this to happen but it's hard trying to figure out the problem when you don't have the device in hand.
Thanks for responding I'll send him the link to the thread.

If it's hanging at the "check" in Odin, it's not even began to write things to the device. The "check" part is checking the tar file. So it may have just been an incomplete download of the tar file.

Same problem as above but still getting pit error
I have the same problem as the guy above. I tried to unroot and soft bricked my phone. Kies hasnt worked neither has anything I've read. I've tried the stock tar and modified tar file from this post ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258628) but still havent had much success. The tar check passes so I'm assuming the files are valid and I'm uploading the file in the PDA slot in Odin 3.07. But when the program runs it gets to (check pit mapping) then it says (device removed) then (device addded) then i get a failed message. Anyone have any ideas?
I'm using Galaxy S4 SGH-M919
Win 7 Home 64bit
So many variables, try original Odin 1.85, try a different USB cable and USB port on PC.

Try using an original Samsung USB cable.

Pit Configuration

Long story short, directly after installing Swap Internal Sdcard to External Sdcard my phone rebooted into recovery mode saying that it could not mount /Data & /Cache. This was on Cyanogenmod 10.2 (latest nightly) and I was an idiot and tried to start over and failed at repartitioning my ROM. Does anyone have a ROM configuration directory tree for a PIT configuration so I can recovery my phone?
Model is: SPH-l900
Recovery: TWRP
This is my last resort D:
======Update======== 10/09/2013
I've done a lot of research, pretty much summed up my options. Since I do not have a PIT configuration for my SPH-l900 I can either buy a hardware / software combo to repair my phone, throw my phone away, or risk taking it to a sprint store.
Also what device would I use to repair my phone? JTAG / RIFFTag? or ???
And also no one can make a PIT file for the SPH-L900 (16GB) ?
I have
Just odin back to a stock rooted LJC rom and it will automagically repartition your phone back the way it needs to be.

Last I researched and tried you cannot just Odin back without a .PIT configuration file with a corrupted ROM (EMMC). Does anyone have a .PIT configuration file for the SPH-L900?
Can you get into odin download mode by holding volume down and power? If so im 99.9% sure its an easy fix. Or you can try your luck finding a .pit configuration...

I was looking for a .PIT configuration file because my ROM (EMMC) was corrupted, from my experience Odin only works with regular Custom OS .tar installs if you only have a working ROM (EMMC). I had to repartition my phone first... And I did look lol, I couldn't find a working .PIT file for my phone sadly and on top of that I tried to create my own but failed it hard. I guess it was a great learning experience because sprint looked at my phone and just said that they would replace my old one, and since I've had it for about a year they just let me keep the old one

OH, OK... if so then I got the message something like there is no pit file. The phone if I don't do anything but just hit the power button it will come to a blank screen with nothing in it and you cannot control anything even power button and you will need to take the battery out in order to turn the phone off but I also mentioned that I can get into the Odin download mode and when you do the tarball (your term) you will get the message that said no pit file.
Did this end up working out for you? I've downloaded MC2 (4.1.2?) and another version (4.4 I think) and everything I try keeps telling me I need a PIT file. My phone is soft bricked where it'll go into download mode, but trying to go into recovery or booting it normally and it'll turn into a Poltergeist screeen and won't do anything - http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-2-sprint/help/odd-semi-brick-t3082102

I am in the same boat.
Woke up this morning and phone is on "Galaxy Note 2" screen. Does not even get past the Sprint and Samsung boot anims. Try to boot into TWRP to send some commands and disable Xposed, I did some playing with Xposed last night but when I went to sleep, I had done multiple restarts and tests w/ Xposed modules and all was sound. Put it on the charger and slept. Until this morning!
Not able to send and ADB commands to phone during boot.
I can get into dl mode with Odin but so far the recovery files I've tried to flashed have returned either FAILED or NO PIT PARTITION error.

Partially Encrypted phone, no longer booting

Hello everyone,
I have an issue and I'm hoping that someone could maybe point me to the right direction: I was encrypting my S3 (i747M, running stock 4.4.2) with the options that are available through the Security menu in Touchwiz, and one of the requirements was that the phone be plugged through the encryption process as it needed a minimum of 80% battery. While I started the process, my phone was plugged and it was going on for about 2 minutes, when it fell from my table and got unplugged.. The back of the phone opened and when I restarted it, it never went past the part where before booting, it asks for a password before proceeding.
So, now the phone doesn't boot anymore.. I guess it's worth mentioning that I do have access to both download and recovery mode.
What I have tried to do so far has been:
Cleaning cache and dalvik and wiping the phone: nothing
Trying to flash the stock 4.4.2 ROM via Odin: nothing
Tried flashing another ROM via Philz, such as CM or Carbon: still nada..
If anyone could weight in and maybe provide any assitance or point me to the right direction, it would be tremendous help!
Thank you!
Did you format Dalvik, cache, data, and system before trying to flash a custom ROM?

I flashed after the stock md5 through Odin without the re-partion thingy checked and it flashed, but I get back to the booting part where I'm asked for the password to decrypt the phone, and it just reboots after that..
Anything else I could possibly do?
Try flashing like before with re-partition checked, but this time also click the PIT button and use this file.

Might not work, but could be worth a shot if the encryption is interfering with the internal pit on your device. If so, perhaps using one like this will work....?
Beyond that I'm just not sure. But if I think of anything I'll let you know.

That you for the pit, and sorry I got back to report so late. I flashed the pit but I think since it wasn't an i747m pit it didn't work properly.. The phone no longer booted so I followed a "debricking" guideline I found on another post and now I can access download mode at least. Other than maybe trying with a, 747m pit what do u think my choices are? Just to JTAG it?

I would. I don't see it making anything worse to try it. If you can get a pit from another I747m, you could try it with that one. Obviously, don't use the one I gave you again!
If you know someone with the same model, I can help you get a pit from that device if you can't find one somewhere around here.

Sorry for the so late reply, but I had to travel for work and wasn't coming here. As a matter of fact I do have a second S3, and i747M also that I could retrieve the PIT from. Could you guide as to how I can do that please? Thank you!

I suggest getting into download mode and trying to flash a full i747m ROM again in Odin.

Thank you for the suggestion. I was able to resolve it in the end I had done that before, but I was unable to get past the samsung logo, because I was missing the correct .PIT i believe. What I ended up doing was flashing stock firmware downloaded from sammobile via Odin and, using the stock recovery, I wiped data / factory reset and it worked! For some reason it didn't and hadn't work with a custom recovery, although I was doing the same process.
Thank you for everyone who helped with this!
