So my t989 is rooted but with stock rom kernel and radio. Since yesterday my phone won't connect to 4g, 3g, or edge. I tried taking the sim card and battery out to no avail. I put my sim in my nexus s and i get 3g. So its not a problem with my account or the network.
check APN settings?
remember to freeze the Tmo crapware?
thanks..for some reason, data packet was unchecked...i never tampered with it though...its working now

i ran into this incident a couple of times, first time thought it was tmo's network, but after a night of sleep it all went well again. this happened just after i rooted my phone for the first time too.
2nd time was a couple weeks back, the data just stopped completely without a warning or notice. i call in tech support and they told me to check the data packet, once checked it was all good. i know i've never touched that option before, but just didn't know why it was unchecked.

It started yesterday and I don't know why. Go to check my weather, hit update and after about 10 seconds I get a bubble telling me that an unknown connection error ocurred and to try again later. I can make phone calls, send and receive texts, but can't check my weather. If I soft reset it works fine. Today, go to check my weather again and same problem. Been making phone calls and texting all morning without issue. Soft reset and again it works fine. Obviously, something is going wrong with my data connection over time, but what could cause it to just shut down completely requiring a soft reset to fix?
More weirdness. I tried manually turning on my data connection in the Connection Manager and as quickly as I turn it on it turns itself off. WTF! I haven't done/added anything to the phone in a week. Is this something on AT$T's end, could they be blocking me from using data for some reason?
About 2 weeks ago I did some regedit to have the data connection turn off automatically after 5 mins of non-use. It was working fine after that and anytime it needed a data connection it would make it. I don't remember where the setting was to change it back, but I doubt this is the problem because this issue just started yesterday.
I'm on AT&T also, on the new leaked ROM, and I have exactly the same issue. It started about 2-3 weeks ago, and I noticed the connection drops overnight (during the day I have no problems), and it'll only come back after restart or reset. I think it's AT&T's network...

Maybe they work on improving their towers and network lol
T-Mobile does that also.
i get a Could not coonect bubble, and have to manualy enable my data conection. If you guys are Tethering our providers automaticly drop our priority level...Unlimited my ass, they tried to cap me at Edge speed and all i had to do was disable/enable the data conection to blast 3g...
I found the problem, but I still don't know what caused it. I'm leaning towards something done on AT$T's end. I have always had my phone configured to use the AT$T ISP in network properties. Apparently, it no longer likes this setting. Switched back to MediaNet and all is working just fine. Problem is that when I first got the phone I did speed tests using both settings and AT$T ISP was faster, so that's why I set it that way. I can't test it now because it won't stay connected with that setting. Can AT$T block users from a particular connection? I don't tether and the most data I've ever used was 280mb last month. Hardly a reason to block me.
I'm not thethering either, my usage is roughly 600 MB/mo and my network is already set to MediaNet. This problem started recently, didn't have it before.
Looks like it is something going on with AT$T. A number of my friends from different states have reported issues over the past 2 weeks with several having severe connection issues the past few days. These are people on varying devices including iPhones, Blackberrys and smartphones. I hope it is due to AT$T finally upgrading their network and not overload from all the new iPhone users and abusive tetherers.
I've been struggling with a problem that I just solved in a stupid way so I'm posting to help other googlers.
As I was using my phone recently, I lost service like I had gone into an area devoid of towers, but service never came back. I verified that another TMobile phone (similar plan) found towers and service just fine. I tried everything I could think of from upgrading Cyanogenmod and the radio to reverting to the stock firmware. No matter what I did, the phone would not get signal. When I went to Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Network operators I would simply get "Error while searching for networks".
It turns out that the SIM card had seen the end of its days. I went to the TMobile store and had the SIM card switched out for a new one (free) and everything worked again.
The explanation I was given was that old "legacy" SIM cards sometimes will just stop allowing you to connect to the towers with no other symptoms.
TL;DR: If your TMobile (maybe other carriers too) phone isn't connecting to the towers anymore, don't panic. You probably need a new SIM card and you can probably get one for free.
Seeing the exact same problem in the last few days
Found your post by googling the error message - I've got the exact same situation on my G2, the behavior started this last weekend. The phone sometimes connects but is very, very inconsistent. I'm missing almost all text messages, or getting them up to a day late. I guess it's off to a t-mo store for a new SIM card if this doesn't stop. Funny thing is this phone was purchased with a (supposedly) new SIM card - hard to call it "legacy".
Thank you, I just stopped getting service today randomly and nothing I did could get it back. I went in to panic mode and was flashing and wiping and everything I could think of then I saw this post. I didn't think it could work but sure enough it did.
way to be....i learned my fact for the day.
mine just bit the dust.
called t-mobile and they suggested a new SIM as well.
ah well
I had the same issue and after doing tons of troubleshooting i seen that there was a space right under the keyboard that was fully flush with the phone. I lightly pressed until both sides snapped back into place and full service returned. So if you have this issue check to see if there are any spaces open and snap it closed.

Mine has been doing this sporadically, it comes and goes and sometimes I cannot get it to find a service provider. I have to keep doing it over and over and over. Sometimes I have to set phone down and come back in a few minutes to do it again and it finally shows a provider.
The question I have is if you take your phone into Tmobile store to have sim. card replaced do you have to revert phone back to stock G2? Will they say something to you if you are rooted and running CM?
This problem happened to me too and a SIM swap fixed it. They don't check if you are rooted- they might ask you to reboot and change some settings to rule out the obvious stuff like airplane mode, correct carrier, etc.
Maybe not same issue, but also have a soultion for similar issue on G2X
Maybe I didn't have the exact same issue, but I had the exact same symptoms, so throwing my solution up here for other Googlers trying to troubleshoot this as well...
I actually have a G2X, went to Canada where I disabled roaming data and used the t-Mobile wifi calling stuff primarily...
When I got back home to the USA, I couldn't get a signal, but I also didn't have the little x next to the icon... When I went into my settings, I couldn't seem to get the "Use 2G Network" setting to stay off, and of course I couldn't make calls or anything over the mobile network...
So I figured I just needed to force the phone to register on the local network, maybe all the roaming got it mixed up or something, but when I went to the "Network operators" setting, I couldn't "Search Networks" and "Select Automatically" didn't work either, I kept seeing the error "Error while searching for networks".... spent some time playing with libril.so and friends, but it made no difference.
Anyway, long story short, it turns out that there's a setting in the T-Mobile "Wifi Calling" app under "Connection preferences", if you select "Wifi Only", it applies to your setting all the time, even when wifi is disabled, disconnected, and even if the "Wifi Calling" app is disabled too !! So just change that setting back to something else when you're done requiring that behavior and everything will work again, Yay!

I can verify that this is the solution that works. I have the LG G2 w/ T-Mobile. I hadn't had any problems until today. Stumbled upon this thread after the T-Mobile chat support couldn't help me. Went to System Settings and turned wifi calling off completely. Back in business.
I replaced my galaxy s 2 because it was acting up and now i have rooted one and also put stock rom bloat free and i recently noticed that sometimes my phone have hard time connecting to data. i can see the uplink sign go green but the downlink arrow doesnt blink and phone keeps me waiting waiting and waiting and i have to restart the phone or leave it for good 5 or 10 minutes to be able to start working. can anyone please tell me if thats a hardware issue or the software? do i need to have my phone replaced?, i dont know if tmobile store would exchange phone now because i purchased phone on 12th and its been 12 days if the reffer me to customer service then they will send me a refurbished phone which i do not want because i paid full price for phone.
any help will be appreciated.
Data connection problem
If you haven't already tried, go to Settings/Wireless and network/Mobile networks/Access Point Names and if there is an option to reset, select it. I had a similar problem with data connections - up and down lights blinked but no connection - and T-mobile support helped me out. Also, make sure Use packet data and Data roaming are checked.

I've had the problem too, both on 4G and WiFi. There is a warning on the data roaming option about incurring extra charges. Is this true? I know that my plan says free domestic roaming, but I'm not sure that applies to data?
The T-mobile rep allowed that this was confusing. They stated that there are no additional charges within the US. Roaming is required because TM uses other providers' (i.e. Verizon) towers in some locations.
I have this same problem, Im wondering if the update coming out next month for wi-fi calling will address this, or what about using the new sim card??? Its pretty annoying but i didnt want to really exchange my phone b/c this is the only problem im having as well as the vertical lines which i have pretty much learned to live with.

i am using the new sim card already... i dont know if the problem is with new sim card or the phone itself but it gets annoying sometimes when i need internet and it doesnt wanna work.
Has anyone had any luck fixing this?
I noticed this problem sometime after rooting and flashing roms. Now I'm on the stock rom released in the dev channel. I've talked with customer servie for an hour and none of their solutions fixed anything for me.
I don't have a good backup - is there anything I can do?
I haven't been bitten by this again. It has been a couple days and I've since replaced my phone (today). But I haven't been on 4G much. Wifi has been working fine for the last couple days.
Hi, lately I've been suddenly loosing my data connection for 3G/4G, and the only way to solve it is to turn the phone off and on. It seems a random event, sometimes I've noticed it after leaving the phone unused for a while and sometimes while surfing on websites. The icon on the status bar and the signal strength bar doesn't change at all, but still the phone refuses to connect to any website or check email. I've tried turning data on and off, and also going to airplane mode and back to phone, and it doesn't work. I'm on AT&T, with rooted ICS and tethering.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Which baseband you using? I have been using ICS using the .111 baseband with no issues in connectivity for a couple weeks.

I was having this issue yesterday while I was out. I would lose data even though it said I had it. Rebooted and has been fine so maybe some tower issue?? I am on the .111 ics baseband.
I also use the. 111 baseband. I've been using it for a month now, but only noticed the loss of connectivity for the last 10 days or so. Could it be the APN config? I searched around for configs, and noticed that some were missing fota and admin apn types. I've removed them, to see if this makes the problem go away. I've traced the tweaks I did, and I included these two in APN type about 10 days ago.
That has happened to me randomly the past few days, as well, using baseband .111 with rooted ICS. It, however, would not even have the icon that I had internet, the 3G/H/4G symbol would just be missing with only cell service bars. The first time it happened, my APN totally disappeared without me touching anything. The next couple times, the APN was just no longer ticked. Ticking the box (circle) works and I instantly have data again. Hope my situation helps others. I just wish there was a permanent solution to this bug.

It happened again today, I still had the 4G icon (I was in a LTE area) and the APN was still ticked. Again, after a reboot the internet worked normally.
Hey I've been having the same problem too!
At first I thought it was because I was using Straight Talk (prepaid) but I popped in the SIM card on my work phone and started noticing the same thing.
Long story short, I went into "data usage" to disable "set mobile data limit" thinking (what's the point if my data isn't working) and presto! All my emails and fb notifications started spitting out.
I think it was because I had "restrict background data" enabled as well.
While I was having this issue Mms was still working.

Thanks, I'll try doing this and will post back if I don't get the problem after a few days.
===============
After almost a week with the mobile data limit disabled, I haven't lost my data connection yet.
Was on the phone with ATT today and they said the storm did cause some issue with the towers so maybe it will not happen now. I have not seen this issue again after that one time.
I was running wicked series rom for about a month and a half and the other day my phone wouldn't send or receive texts calls etc. The sim card is good and the phone shows 5 bars signal strength but it wont connect to the tmobile network. I have flashed other custom roms and also went back to stock nothing has fixed the problem. I get the error message "Restricted access changed voice service is blocked" Tmobile says there is nothing blocked on the account. I have tried manually connecting to the account, factory reset etc. nothing has fixed it it just sits there searching for the networks Any ideas?
Have you tried flashing a new modem? Did you buy the phone new?

I don't think it's that simple. I just got the error and I've only been with tmo for a month. I bought the phone from them. The only thing I've done is rooted and debloated my phone. It cleared up after turning the wifi off and back on.
