[FIX] Facebook Push Notification - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I found a fix that made it possible for push notifications to come through in realtime (for comments, tags etc.). I heard about that BlackBerry simulator solution and this is what i did : I downloaded a BB simulator (for 9300 series of phones or something...basicaly BB 7.0 or so). I logged out the FB app on Android, then i fired up the BB simulator/emulator and i I entered my facebook credentials in the BB's FB app and enabled "push notifications" and i also disabled all email notifications within the app. After that i logged-out and so FB push notifications started coming through immediately on my Samsung Galaxy Try it ,it freakin works! P.s.: i would love to know if it worked for you. And another thing, don't forget to re-login on the FB app on the Nexus and ENABLE NOTIFICATIONS in the Options menu (the first checkmark box just under "refresh interval". Every other things like Event Invite,Messages and Friend Requests don't come through via Push but via refresh interval. Everything else will work through PUSH

Thanks for pointing this out! I've had no issues with push notifications but people in a struggle may find this interesting. Muchly appreciated.

Duff link, you got the full one?
EDIT: http://us.blackberry.com/developers/resources/simulators.jsp

Did this a few months back and its worked for me ever since, on both my incredible and galaxy nexus. It's a shame this is even necessary though. There's so many poor quality apps out there that can handle push notifications, you would think facebook could get it down by now.

thanks so much for this, my girlfriends phone had notifications that pushed and it drove me nuts, i matched all her setting to mine and nothing, i cant believe it takes a blackberry lol. again thanks

[Q] Facebook Push Notifications FIXED!!

I was wondering if anyone who is running Synergy RLS1 ROM has working Facebook Push Notifications? If so could you help me in getting them to work? I have never had push notifications working on my phone and would like to pin point why it works on some EVO's and not others.
Edit: After doing some research on Google I stumbled upon this page that explains that having "Facebook for Blackberry Smartphones" in your app list on Facebook your push notifications will work. So I found someone who still uses a Blackberry (wasnt easy) and all I had to do was log into my Facebook on their phone and enable notifications and wait for my news feed to load. Then I just logged out. Went on my computer and sure enough the "Facebook for Blackberry Smartphones" appeared in my App list under account settings. Then on my EVO I just cleared the Facebook app data and logged in again and sure enough my Push Notifications were working. I have cleared the data before and it never worked so I dont know why having the Blackberry thing makes it work but it has for me. No more flooding my gmail inbox with Facebook crap... Please feel free to try this and post if it works for you.
The Facebook for Android app just sucks. I don't think anyone has done anything specific to get push notifications to work on their phone - some do, some don't.
You can set up push notifications through Friendcaster using your Gmail or something. I haven't actually done it because I don't use Facebook very often, but I know that the option is there. You can try that out.

I can tell this, it wasn't working when I was on stock froyo, not working still with what I have now. I don't think the FB devs are able to test it on all phones and roms, but then again, I don't think they pay much attention to bug reports. I must have sent them one report everytime they update that notifications are broken.
Friendcaster's a neat replacement, though.

For FB settings do you need update intervals enabled? If so, how often?

No not really you will get instant fb notifications, i set mine to every 30 mins though it really does not make a difference
Facebook app is such a mess.
On my Sensation and other phones, with notifications turned off, I get PERFECT notifications.
Now with my new Galaxy Nexus, with it on or off I don't get any notifications.
Man I hate them.

Yes you need to be signed out of any facebook when you do this trick
So basically if I have the Facebook messenger app installed on my phone, this will not work?
For example I removed facebook app from my xoom. I installed facebook app on my nexus. I also have the facebook messenger installed on my nexus. So can I use this method?
works for me! make sure u remember to sign out of both facebook and facebook messenger on your gnex before u sign in on the simulator
Worked for me.
Just follow the instructions, and remember to log out.

[FIX] Facebook w/ PUSH

This is simply what I have gathered from research and testing... but it works for me flawlessly.
All right, I started this journey off simply trying to find out how to get facebook messages without having to open the app every time. Then the messenger app came out and I used it for a while... and I ended up hating it. ANYWAYS this is how to get those lovely little messages every time and never miss a one.
I found out how to do the blackberry facebook push hack and that worked and then mysteriously it stopped working or I stopped noticing. Either way heres the solution
SOLUTION
1. Find a blackberry
2. Log into the "facebook for blackberry" app.
3. Allow access or w.e and then log out of the blackberry app
4. Log into facebook for android and enable notifications ( I have mine set to alert on everything except group invites... I hate those.. also I set it to facebook pop for the alert )
5. I turn off refresh so that push does all the work (battery saver... the only thing you need to do is manually refresh your news feed, which I'm 90% sure the new fb app does upon entry.)
6. *IMPORTANT* make sure no android tablet/phone is logged in under the same account. EDIT: Just found the culprit!! It is the facebook messaging app installed on my xoom.
7. Enjoy Facebook with working push.
-------------------------------------
THEORY: I think facebooks servers send out one "push" message per message and if you have another device (in my case a tablet) synced to the same facebook account (the one with blackberry push enabled) then it simply sends that one push to whatever device has the messaging app installed... HOWEVER if your tablet/other device doesn't have it installed then it goes right to your NORMAL facebook app... thus no need for that silly messaging app that always confuses me between that and the google+ one. rantover
If you cant find a blackberry download the latest blackerry emulator from bb like it says in my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383672

facebook push notifications

anyone having roblems with push FB notifications?
It's never worked for me. I've heard that Facebook said their push notifications are supported on Android, but never seen it, no matter what settings you use in the app.
BUT if you want to get push notifications for Facebook messages, then that is supported in their separate (official) app, which I've had no problems with.

FIX:
Find a friend with a blackberry or use/download the blackberry emulator.
Log into facebook in the blackberry app, grant it permission to your facebook data.
Push notifications should now work on your android device.
I know it's weird, but that seems to make it work for some reason.
never worked for me
but i've ditched it for the time being since it was eating up 20% of battery usage =/

Never worked for me
I was getting notifications, but uninstalled the app to save on batteries. Now I use the mobile version online, which has pretty much all the features as the app.
Stock 4.0.1 rom
BB fix works for me, make sure you change the notification sound from silent to whatever you want (mine is the facebook pop)
Also you can change the refresh to never because the important stuff is pushed regardless. (saves battery)
Also IMPORTANT, make sure you don't have the facebook account signed in on any other android devices such as tablets or other phones.
Do this and facebook push will work every time.

fb notifications work about 25% of the time for me.
Been that way since they released their app for Android.

Might do this myself. This whole not getting notifications is dumb since both sides say they're supported but don't work -.-
actually it was working for me till yesterday and it stopped today, so BB fix is not involved here.
just wondering if from time to time push notifications stop working for a reason

When I was at stock 4.0.1 or 4.0.2, FB push works perfectly for me (I guess).
But after having flashed AOKP Milestone 3 build from 4.0.3, push stopped working for no reason.
What always 100% worked for me was deactivating and then reactivating my facebook account. I switch roms frequently and sometimes FB push notification would not work on certain roms unless I do what I mentioned earlier. Just log back in to reactivate your account. Hope this helps.

I just tried to deactivate my facebook account and reactivate.
I'll get back to you guys tonight.
Being signed into my account on multiple android devices borked it. New icons for push I noticed as well.

Mine have also stopped within the past day or so. I originally had to do the BlackBerry trick to get them working in the first place too. I tried deleting and clearing the data cache, as well as uninstalling then reinstalling the app and trying the BlackBerry trick again but that doesn't work.
No idea why they've stopped.
I was running AOKP Milestone 3 build 22 and FB push stopped working.
I tried to deactivate / reactivate my FB account according to DOHCtor's method but no luck.
Tonight I flashed the build #23 and FB push start working correctly. I have no idea.
Furthermore, FB Messenger seems not working

Anyone else having an issue where read messages don't stay marked as read? I've been having to re mark emails as read daily.

Yes. Even my note 1 was terrible with this. I'd delete messages even and they pop back up multiple times randomly. It's been pretty agitating, and I've gotten to the point where I just stopped the notifications.

Did you try using a 3rd party email app to see if it made a difference?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note II (SGH-I317) on the infamous AT&T Network.
Yes, no change. This is yahoo, road runner, gmail, and the att.net via yahoo that all do it repeatedly on any device except via web browser. Tried an ipad, iphone, note 10.1, the first note phone, and both of the note 2's I have had. The apple devices don't copy the alerts for only the roadrunner account, otherwise all 4 accounts repeated the same problem.
Have you found any solution? I am not sure why all those different gmail and yahoo accounts would act so strangely but it is typical for me. Haha

Nope, unfortunately no solution as of yet but it's annoying as he'll, and I know that much!

This probably won't help, but I'll put it out there anyway. I've noticed that when I go into any web based email client (Comcast, for instance) the mail on my phone from that account...refreshes, is the best way I can put it. Mail I've already deleted from my phone pops up again as new and I have to go through and delete it again. That has happened on pretty much every phone I've used. Never really looked into it too deeply, but it is annoying.

Definitely true! I never had an issue with any devices for years now until my note 1 hit ICS official. I am not sure how it coincides but that is the only thing I know of that changed. Strange stuff. I have the same trouble, especially clear from device to device.
I may just try a 3rd party app to see if that helps. Maybe K9 Mail or similar. Will report back.

Just a few thoughts of what I've seen in the past. You may already know all this but FWIW, whatever.
1. pop3 email accounts are crap. Usually when you delete, it still stays on the server until you delete in webmail or something with true access to email.
2. Setting up email accounts with imap will delete off the server. It's not perfect like Exchange but better than pop.
3. I've often used the settings in gmail to push or pull email from my other none gmail accounts. For example my home internet company will only send usage alerts to the email account they provide. They also don't allow access to see the email unless you are on their network (at home) or go to their site and check their webmail app. So I use gmail pull tool to automatically check for new emails every so often (Gmail decides the frequency) and pull the new mail into my gmail account, then they show up on my phone. One time I accidently created a loop of three email addresses, one pushing and one pulling email so 1 email continually delivered over and over until I realized what I had done. "Broadcast storm anyone??" You may want to check how many devices are getting access to that email address, it could be something like #4.
4. I've seen a problem where my home desktop PC has Outlook installed. When outlook is open I think it would receive the email before my phone and save it to the PST, so my phone would never see it. Except there was a setting in outlook to "Leave emails on the server for X amount of time. Which was great because then my phone would see them even though outlook pulled them into the PST file. However I also noticed when I deleted the email from my phone it would reappear and I think it was because I had outlook leave it on the server. If my PC was shut off I had no problems. Another way I could clear it was to go to a webmail site and login to my email and delete them off the server. Then they would still be in my PST from the first time they arrived and I could also delete them off my phone only this time they would not reappear because I had gone into the server and deleted them. I bet this is as clear as mud right. Meh
One of these above may be a factor.
I am using apex launcher and the symptoms have minimized or fixed.... but this is an android issue... android doesn't do push like the iPhone...
on the iPhone...you delete an email and a couple of secs later.. it is gone from the web... and vice versa...
on android you have to wait till it syncs... it doesn't do push...
these are the things that make me want to go back to iPhone... i wish we could install iOS on this big phone!

Yahoo mail app does push for certain, and so does hotmail, even to the native email app. I just cant seem to get the yahoo mail app to zoom ever, and it makes reading messages impossible. I get the same repeated emails in ios also, so it isn't free of similar issues for me at least.
