[Q] Rogue EK02 Stock Kernel vs Chris EK02 Stock Kernel - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

After flashing the rogue ek02 kernel i ran some quadrant benchmarks and was getting lower than usual scores, i then flashed Chris acs5 ek02 stock kernel and my scores were back to normal. i prefer the rogue kernel because of the bootanimation support but why is it slower?

Because benchmarks are CRAP You know how I benchmark my devices? On stability, choppy scrolling (or lack of), game play, voice/sms-mms, and various other things. Those benchmark apps are not reliable one bit! Though it is still fun to show my scores to all the Evo 3D owners out there, if there are any left, LOL.
joking about the 3d, i am in fact watching ebay to purchase another one. i sold my 3d to buy this device at launch, now i am sort of missing the 3d. i will not ditch the epic touch for it, just would be nice to have both!

I went through the same over Calk's / StrongSteve / Blazer ROM, I prefer the Rogue kernel with its Recovery mod. The bench mark shows significant difference between those two kernels with the same CPU clock. The performance is a "subjective" thing, with my limited time of using those two, I do feel that with Chris's Kernel, it is smoother when moving between pages.
Currently, I am on StrongSteve 12/8 ROM with Rogue 1.3. Let me clarify my comments: all those ROMs/ Kernels are great, I felt blessing to have so many good options. It would be nice to know the theory behind the benchmark.

Same ROM but with Chris's kernel. Its more about finding what suits your needs best. The new Rogue is default on "Lazy" governor and stock is "on demand." It can be easily changed in SetCPU or similar app. The new Rouge has lots of flexibility so lots of adjusting can be done

I agree completely here... even down to the EVO 3D. Besides, I would rather keep the Rogue kernel just because of the recovery.

Have you tried out Chris's kernel W/ACS recovery? It includes pre ROM wipe options and pre theme wipe options also. I have tried both and can attest much smoother performance from Chris41g's kernel. So if it is just the recovery you are interested in give ACS recovery a try.

ACS about broke my phone. I could get into the recovery but could not choose any options then it wouldn't get back into the rom I had to ODIN flash a new kernel with the rogue recovery to get back into the phone. I thought I bricked it for awhile.

i have an easy question for you experts out there!

now keep in mind i am the noobest of noobs in modifying phones. i have an Epic 4g and haven't even touched the surface on it's potential apparently from reading through this forum.
my question is (before i start doing anything else to my phone) what exactly does a custom kernel do for your phone?
also what exactly does a custom rom do for your phone?
I am currently running a rooted Epic 4g w/cwm and i am on the DK28 build.
what else does everyone reccomend for me to get the full experience from my phone? (in the way of a custom kernel and custom rom, since i am pretty affluent to most apps at the moment)
Well a custom rom is usually optimized for speed and responsivenes. All roms are different since devs usually put there own mods and thems in. Some are completely stock temed others are themed fully. Depends on what your tastes are. As for kernals they're usually overclocked and undervolted which means it'll be overclocked to 1.2 or 1.3 ghz and run at the same power level as 1ghz or less. Usually gives faster phone with beter response and overall speed. (Opens apps quicker) hope this gives a little insight. I'm personally running epic experience 2.0.07 and genocide kernal overclocked to 1.2 ghz.(not undervolted at 1.2 ghz only at 1ghz so battery suffers a bit). Waiting for next epic experience release.

that does help tremendously! i had most of it figured out but i wanted to be sure as to what they meant. i appreciate the help and i will be trying the rom and kernel you suggested!

[Q] Best Rom in your opinion for EXT4?

I just got an epic this week from sprint, loving it so far NOW that I flashed it myself to Cricket. can someone recommend a rom that can be used as a daily driver for me? I know alot of people post this kind of question but this is what I'm looking for:
Speed
A little awsomesauce
Nice layout
No sprint bloatware
Overclocked Kernel preferably EB13 (Don't know if this has been done yet)
Bluetooth for music functioning along with voice (using a motorola roadster for my car)
Few if no force closes
sorry for asking this as I know alot of devs see this on a normal basis but I'm VERY new to samsung android, Evo's and Mytouch 4g's were my last phones so I've always been an HTC kind of guy. any help would be appreciated.
The new syndicate just dropped. Its amazing.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yeah, what he said ^
same here 100%
midNght v4.1 ... has all of what you're looking for.
It has all the standard apps as separate flashable zips. So you start off with a very bare ROM and build it up yourself.
It uses an overclocked kernel 1.2 when using setCPU
It is solid and speedy
its EB13 as well.
(no matter what rom you choose; you should start off by using odin and the eb13 tar that already has recovery and root in it; thread is in the dev area)
Good luck
Viper ROM
The Viper Trinity Rom is amazing
Viper rom frozen has been my favorite so far. Trinity is very hot, small glitch with corp email that keeps me from giving it a 10.

Yeah, the new Syndicate Frozen ROM is great.
It installs overclocked to 1.2ghz, and even when I underclocked with SetCPU, I didn't notice any drop in snappiness at all.
MidnightROM is supposed to be pretty good as well, though I had some Force Close issues (that were probably my fault), so I switched to Syndicate for the time being.
Bonsai 3.0.1, you have to wait a little longer but i hear good things, in the mean time bonsai 3.0.0 is sweet. Fast,no bloat and backs up and restores your data for you. really good.
The new syndicate rom is just as amazing as their di18 release was. Plus! There is no carrier IQ running, which means speed improvements as well as the privacy issues are gone.
oh and one more feature I need now that my fiancee got his atrix last night, I need a working front facing camera, do all the roms mentioned have the FFC working?
And yes I'm very jealous of him having that damned new dual core phone lol.... that's why I text bombed him with a 1000 texts as soon as he got home with it where he lives MUAH HA HA HA HAAAAA!
Another one for Bonsai ROM. The easiest install I've ever done on any ROM and it's snappy and stable.
Just do what I do and try them all. then install the newest update for every one. Then just stick with your favorite. You also learn a lot in the process.

I give my vote for Midnight ROM v4.1
I had this problem as well until a friendly person here explained to me that you have to go back into Clockwork and flash everything extra you want. It comes with only the bare essentials.
Midnight ROM has more work involved but it is great.
it does have a working FFC as well. Someone actually just asked about it in the Midnight ROM thread and the developer was very helpful in answering the question.

Haha! I was thinking about how we are like pigeons- we go to whoever has the bread at the moment.
The best part about the community roms is if one rom finds a new fix it will trickle into the others. We are still in the early stages of eb13. I expect to see some amazing things from our devs in the next month.

I'm running Bonsai, and they just updated to eb13. I prefer it over viper and the others, it seems faster and has more battery. Also it backs up your data, and removes all bloatware.

Kernel question

I rooted mu wife's evo lastnight using unrevoked3. Went awesome. She wants to keep stock rom for now but I wanted to flash her a custom kernel. I have an epic so I'm a little confused on the evo kernels. First off what is a good kernel fir stock rom? I saw the kernels and there are alit if options to choose from between havs and no havs. I wanted to overclock her phone a little bit but from all the threads I read on here a lot of people are against it. Why is that? I know obviously worse battery but I'm overclocked on my epic to 1.4 and my battery life is pretty good cause I also undervolted it. So what kernel di you guys recommend for stock rom. Should I flash a havs or havs not? Thanks for the help guys. I appreciate it. I'm really trying to learn the evo.

Personally never had to overclock my evo. I run CM7, but as far as sense kernels, net achy have the best reviews, and I would go for havs, since it has like a built in setcput to regulate voltages, and help her battery life.
Yeah that's the kernel I was looking at. I'm just having a hard time deciding what subtype to try. I read an awesome article stickied at the top in the development section about the differences but I wanted some user input. It said some phones can't handle havs?
Sent From My Evo Killer!
Yeah, some phones do well with havs while some don't. Same goes with kernels, my phone may act better on one while yours runs like crap. Its mostly trial and error, but start with one that is more-havs. Then theres sbc, (superior battery charging) aka trickle charging. Its pretty controversial right now since 6-10 people out of thousands ruined their batteries with it. You'll definitely get WAY better battery life but be prepared to buy another battery in a year or so ($5 for stock on amazon).
Personally I would try netarchy's 4.3.1-cfs-havs-nosbc and see how it does.

You did state that it was your wife's phone, right? If she is not a techy, all she will care about is that it works. I would leave the default kernel in place and see how she "feels" about it....LOL...If she happy, leave it as-is.
As for what kernel to recommend, definitely a Netarchy kernel as the others have stated. I would start with the toastmod 4.3.2 noHAVS noSBC noUV and then go from there.

I agree and I'm not interested in overclocking it. With the right combination of rom and kernel, I am able to get my EVO to be as fast as I need it to be without sacrificing stability.

No my wife isn't techy at all. She doesn't have a clue. She just doesn't like all the bloatware on the phone and finally she asked my hoe to get rid of it. Lol. So she let me root her oho e and then she told me what she didn't want. I might just leave stock kernel on there for now. Her battery is great and she honestly doesn't care about anymore performance. Thank you all for your help. You have really helped me understand the evo a little bit more. I want to buy one myself to just play around with and flash. You guys have so much mire to play around with. The epic is definately limited. I've flashed everything there is to on the epic at least once. Lol.

personally I underclock my evo to save battery, i don't know your wife but chances are she would be better served by a UV then an OC. I understand And you're very welcome. I know it is tempting to take her phone and use it for all its worth, but your wife, if she is like mine, would have a cow. My wife has a G-2 and I would love to root it and flash a custom rom among other things, but she could care less about things like that and it drives me crazy....LOL...Still, pushing the issue is not worth sacrificing a peaceful coexistence. Well, there's no perfect answer to this question. The best 2.3 ROM is the one that works best on your phone. Every ROM performs just a bit differently on each person's phone. Apps added and other changes made can also effect this. Our Epics can be like a second girlfriend...one minute giving you all kinds of love and happiness and the next minute can be a real pain in the ass...wait maybe I need a new girlfriend!

Yup, its all about trial and error. I can't tell you how many times I have tried a ROM and its worked perfect only for other users to report constant force closes. When you do find the ROMs that work perfect you will be a very happy camper. It pains me to run a stock setup now.

CM7.
jk. But I'd check out acs bamboozled...best gb rom I've used so far.
I've tried two (or three) 2.3 based roms and there has been a couple of things that have always caused me to go back to SRF 1.2:
No custom kernels = no overclock - I'm not a huge overclocking type of guy, but I always like to have it clocked at 1.12 or 1.2 ghz, just enough to keep it smooth but not high enough to run it hot or drain my battery.
No custom kernels = Cannot use Galaxy Tuner - I use Google Music as my primary source of car music, which means I needed to find an external app to use as an equalizer. Voodoo sound didn't work and Tuner froze on me every time I tried to use it.
Still Very buggy - I've run into a few bugs that have always irritated me, no matter how small they were. Whether it's something that freezes my phone or just kills the frame rate, I've just always been bugged (get it?) by bugs.
But where there is bad things, there have been a lot of good things that I absolutely loved about 2.3, almost enough to stay with it:
Live Backgrounds - For me, they've seem to have gotten better (stock ones anyways) and, as far as I could tell, they don't murder my battery or frame rate. The one I loved the most was this awesome looking clock that was a bunch of circles. It's hard to explain...
Screen off Animation - More eye candy, but awesome eye candy. Not much to say other then I love watching my phone turn off
Everything just seemed so smooth - Scrolling, opening apps up, etc, just seemed so fluid and clean, even if the frame rate was dropping for some reasons.
------
Those are some of my personal pro's and con's on deciding whether to run 2.3 at this time or not. For me, the con's on top were more important then the pro's on the bottom. Needs are different for each person so I'm sticking with 2.2 for now until either the official release of 2.3 is out or we can start adding kernels and themes (etc etc).

You know there can be no custom kernels until source code is released. But as for overclocking, many have had success with Tegrak from the market that has allowed overclocking on the GB leaked ROMS.

Yea, I'm slowly learning all that, I just didn't know at the time. As for Tegrak, I heard it's a major drain on the battery for some reason, but maybe results vary from user to user. Overclocking wasn't a huge concern for me, it was the other two on there that kind of got to me. I'm still happy with 2.2 so that's why I've decided to wait it out

hmm i never tried compkid's regeneration or inception roms. How are they?
as for the topic we are on now, i left acs1.2 the day eg22 came out and yeah al though for some things i would love to go back to acs1.2 but the scale is heavier for me on the gb side.
I used go green, team era's scrambled eggs and tried all the randomrom 2.3 versions (eagle, egret, osprey). The most stable rom for me is randomrom osprey. It is fast enough, great on battery and everything works well with it (other lauchers, apps, etc). As for scrambled eggs, man i loved how snappy that rom was. It was extremely quick upon the click but unfortunately it wasnt working that good with a few launcher and apps and way too many force closes but still fast. Even though i feel scrambled eggs was snappier than osprey, i did receive much higher quadrant scores with osprey (not that quadrant actally matters to me, just for the sake of seeing the scores).
GoGreen was meh for me and i am definitely anticipating an update for scrambled eggs..
I first went with Bamboozle, and it was good. Then one day there are 3 EG22 Roms here it seemed.
So I tried RandomRom and I was having an awful time after 2 days with FC's and reboots.
I then loaded Scrabmled Eggs yesterday and I have been clean (other than google Nav). I am checking battery life now, but I am doing better now than I was with RandomRom. I have to think I was doing something wrong with RandomRom cuz my battery life was terrible and the FC's. I did the same thing each time I installed them, but as said before, each phone is different.
Good luck!

I was running the scrambled eg22v4, just installed v7 this morning and so far it seems a little better. Only complaint is my battery seems to be going down a little faster, but it could be cuz I've been messing with loading stuff and resetting everything up. I'll give more feedback when I've had it a few days. ACS Go Green wasn't bad either.

Okay so I just installed the EL26 Rogue stock kernel and I feel like my phone just got sooo much smoother. Scrolling is like buttah! Coming from Rogue EL13, btw.
+1
Loving it!
no lie, still on EG30 mainly because love the scroll bounce, was rocking it with desperado OC to 200/1400, but this EL26 Rogue beats it how silky smooth it is.
as bonus VPNC Widget still works, see /dev/net/tun when connected with EL26 Rogue, hadn't expected this, thanks!!!
Great to hear. Still on the EG30 ROM, reading and doing more reading before I take the dive into EL26. But the positive reports are very encouraging!

Glad to hear this. Still holding out because some themes don't support EL26 yet.
Any noticeable difference in battery life on EL26?

I've never had large differences in battery life when on any modem or kernel with any custom ROM. To me it's all dependent on how your phone is set up and how much you use it. As long as I can make it through the day without having to charge up, I'm good. If it lasts longer than 24 hours, that's just extra benefits.
With stock ROM, my battery only lasted maybe 7-8 hours. On any custom ROM I've ran, it's usually well past that.
I'm on the Nothing but the honey theme, and that's been my fave theme out of the ones I've tried. I know for certain that one is working without issues on EL26 with Calk's rom.
I wasn't seeing smooth scroll performance with EL26 on UnNamed EL13 rom base touchwiz use.
Went back to EL13 all is perfect again.

Decad3nce of OG Epic Cyanogenmod fame explained to me how having a matching system is best due to intents and some other things that were over my head..lol. I always keep my ROM/modem/kernel matching but that's just me
