These guys really seem incapable of doing anything right.
Push notifications should be the easiest thing in the world to have working.

Hello, Newbie to Android world here - receiving my HTC Desire, hopefully, next week.
Just wanted to share some information regarding an application called "LiveProfile" which will soon be released that incorporates BBM for Androids, if im not mistaken.
Anyone heard of it?
Just looked it up and from what I can see its a replacement for bbm. It will work across iPhone, blackberry and android. Basically MSN messenger for phones.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I've been using a BlackBerry for practically 2 years now and I have to say perhaps the only application that has the BB stand out among its rivals is the BlackBerry Messenger - now with LiveProfile, I'm very excited for the upcoming release of this app.
What's the advantage of this over WhatsApp or PingChat? Those are both multi-platform already, and with WhatsApp there's no need for a user name as it uses your phone number, so anyone in your contacts with the application is automatically in your friend list.
Yeah, why another one? ... PingChat is OK.
I know, competition is good.
But for this kind of app, I just want ONE ...
It seems impossible.
Wait until someone created multi of multi IM of multi IM ...
PingChat is a good one.
MJwitter: well, quite frankly, i believe there is one prime advantage over iphone's Whatsapp in terms of privacy. With "whatsapp" you do not necessarily have to have the contact on your list, just as long as he has your number he is able to send you msgs - which a lot of people would find annoying (you could probably ignore them, im not sure, but its a terrible feature initially)
gogol + lukehluke: i have never heard of ping chat before. i'll have to google it. However, as i have mentioned earlier i believe this application is intended to merge bbm, whatsapp and so on all under one roof - again I am uncertain of this information; however, hopefully this turns out to be the advantage of LiveProfile.
Nonetheless, thank you for sharing that information.
I just checked it out; however it seems to display an error when i clicked on "Join Now." Is this application not yet released?
there are quite a few BBM replacements available. They will never connect to BBM Contacts but provide the same functionality.
1. PingChat
2. Cnectd
3. LucidMessenger
4. Pmessenger
those are all i know of atm.
I'll try ping chat on HTC, just as soon as I get it by next week.
I heard about Pmessenger, but the reviews weren't very good.
Is WhatsApp ever coning out for android?, ive tried to convert a few people over to ping chat but they all use whatsapp

LOL try to be patient, my friend.
Ive been trying to do that for the past 24 hrs too. fortunately, a few ppl installed it.
however, they dont need to "convert" to pingchat, ask them to install it and they could use both ;D

Pingchat and Whatsapp? call themselves 'SMS Replacement' apps. Wherein they act like BBM so you can send a message whether a person is online or offline. These apps can only be used between their respective clients i.e. Pingchat-to-Pingchat, Whatsapp?-to-Whatsapp?
IM clients connect through AIM, MSN, Facebook &c.
Whatsapp Beta works. Google up Whatsapp android beta and youll find a download link on a facebook page. Install it and then you may get authorization error just wait like 1 day and try again and it will work. Been working well cant find any bugs with it yet.

Cool, its started working.
Ok, my quick review - pingchat vs whatsapp
Its alot faster than pingchat in terms of messages being delivered, sometimes pingchat lags a very long time and also pingtchat soelmetimes doesnt give notifications unless you open the app, so whatsapp wins on those two.
But pingchat has a MUCH better look and feet to it, and it works on phone numbers & ID's so you can use either, but whatsapp only works over phone numbers, so unless i have the persons phone number i cant message them on whatsapp, but on pingchat you can just use there id and dont need there phone number so pingchat wins on that.
So both have goods & bads, ping chat is free though which is a plus, if you check in the account info in the whatsapp beta, it says it expires in November 2010, so i asume thats when it goes live in the android marketplace, it also has an upgrade option so it will definatly be a paid app when its released and have a limeted free use period
More people use whatsapp so its better "at the moment", but pingchat has a much better feel to it, so hopfully more people start using pingchat.

Hi
A few months ago I was using BB Storm 2 and was alerted when ever someone posted on my Facebook or commented on something I had commented on
Does this do that too or is that just a BB thing
Thanks
Sounds like you're on about push alerts. Depending on who you believe v1.5.0 on the Desire was meant to include these but I've never had them so I'd say no it currently doesn't include them
You can set up you account to send you an email when those events happen but the app will only alert to messages, friend requests & event invites
So if its not included could I not just install the app

Yes, you can and there is a new version out today. But some people seem to get the notifications and some don't.
As an aside, the FB app is already on the Desire - just update it to v1.5.1 (todays update) via the Market
Not had any push notifications so far so doubt it's working...seems the BB/iPhone version are better than the Android one
I get push notifications for new messages, friend requests and event invites, but I had to set the app to never poll, rather than every 30 minutes etc. That should give you push notifications. But it's still quite limited, you don't get anything when someone comments on a photo etc.

The only notifications I get every from facebook are when I get messages or friend requests. But most seem to be quite delayed at times, between when they're actually sent and when I get my notification on my phone.
Only downside to android is the lack of a good well working facebook app.

Facebook need to pull their finger out their arse and actually make a decent app. Fair enough, it's harder to make an Android app than an iPhone app since there are loads of different models.... but still.
As for push notifications, they're suppose to work if you have 2.2+ but they don't.
theres a few 3rd party facebook apps that have push notifications
Hey guys,
So, you know that official Facebook app is supposed to have push notifications, right? Yeah? Well, it apparently does, they just never worked for me at all. Turns out, there's a fix, and it's quite the strange one - you have to sign into the Facebook app on a Blackberry. Once you've done that, you'll start getting push notifications for wall posts, comments, and event invites, with an entirely new notification icon. Weird, no?
Of course, it's not like I had a recent BB device just lying around.. Thankfully, the Blackberry emulator software works just fine for our purposes. I've written up a guide for the curious, with links to the emulator software and so forth.
Seems the fix was found in May over at AndroidCentral, but I'd certainly not seen it posted anywhere I frequent, and had to spend some time searching for a fix to stumble across the post - hence this topic.
Let me know if it works for you.
Really interesting, I'd like to try and see!

Cheers - Weird, isn't it? I'm planning to make a walkthrough video later on today, unfortunately my Galaxy S II's camera is the best I have, so I'll need to convince the girlfriend to let me tinker with her Nexus One to show how it's done.. We'll see if she lets me.
This trick worked for me.
I've always had that notification icon (little sign-post looking thing), and have never signed in on a Blackberry, so I guess mine have always worked for some reason.
Interesting, have you got anything else of note authorised on your Facebook account?

What do you mean by 'private messages'? Facebook chat/messenger? This works for wall posts, comments, and event invites, not messages - that's what the separate Facebook Messenger app is for.

Then I might have said something stupid, I'll keep you updated.
One observation tho, in your guide you say that it's possible, once you enable this, to deactivate the periodic check, since you get push notifications. I agreed and removed it. If push doesn't "push" private messages tho, I guess that I'll have to re-enable the periodic checks, since that checks private messages received too.
Would you be able to do this for us, if we give you our Facebook credentials? (big big sign of trust I know )

Private messages get pushed to me and have done so for the past 2 months, something must be up on your end. Make sure you've turned on notifications for messages in the FB app, if that doesn't work then I'm out of ideas mate
Could you send me your Database files in /data/data/com.facebook.katana/databases after cleaning them from any private information ( I'm particularly interested in the key_value database ).
I'm wondering if there's any way we can activate it without this long process, so I wanna compare settings from a push activated device and a not push activated one.
So why do you think this wasn't implemented in the app itself?
Is it because its buggy or a battery drainer?
Or is it because Apple and RIM pay royalties to Facebook to have the better features?
Thanks man ... working like a charm here.
I have always got fb notifications without having to do any of this.

Hi again, just a couple of features I have noticed missing, or not found them....
First is being able to long hold a contact and send business card etc,
And the other one is deleting individual calls from call history, either in batch or long pressing.
Any one else found some features you'd expect missing or if the ones above will be included in a software update?

You can't zoom in the photo edit application, which makes it absolutely impossible to remove red eyes even though there is such a functionality. Tried it several times already, the built in flash almost always guarantees red eyes.

update which misses the core features of ICS. Still its getting rolling to many country almost 4 days gone.
Native 3G VIDEO CALL.- why we have a front camera where we cant use it for video call. Its not fair
WIFI-DIRECT- The most welcomed features. Thought its being the highend smart phone we already misses the 4.0 bluetooth which the board can support but atleast the WIFI capable direct transfer technology which most company including samsung incorporated even in GB phone and adding to these the white paper reveales that its has the technology in buit. But why its not implemented in the latest build.
Camera : Burst Mode. Many low end smartphones has that features. Why we dont have that feature. its really a pain that having spent on high end phone lacks basic functionality where a mediocre devices can perform the same functionality at a fraction of price.
I am not pin pointing or complaining. I am just esclating to the right department to notify that these core features which are missing in the XS.
Please take it as a feedback and do the needfull to the owners of XS.
Thanks
The use of wifi direct. Setting an external MP3 as a ringtone without the use of any apps or moving the MP3 to another location on the phone. In the contacts app, choosing to view only people with cellphone numbers (again, without using any other external app)

Also, a BBM type thing would be nice, preinstalled, so all Android phones come with it. Group chats and the like would be pretty awesome.

I use Hangouts, SMS only no Google Voice. Seems to work great. I see a lot of people like Textra.
Personally I'm a big fan of the new stock SMS "Messenger" app that comes with 5.0 Lollipop (you can easily sideload the APK); it works a bit more seamlessly with the watch in my opinion, and I like the app itself better than Hangouts. In terms of having the message marked "read" when you dismiss it, I haven't found one yet that has that functionality (not completely anyway) I've used the stock Samsung S5 Messaging app, Hangouts, and the new Lollipop Messenger app; usually they all behave the same way, when you read and dismiss it from your watch, it dismisses the notification on your phone, but when you go into the messaging app the message is still "unread" within the app.

The stock Messaging app on the Sony Z3 has the option to Mark as Read on one of the left swipes - and also to read the whole message thread, and Reply or Open on Phone. I actually prefer it this way, personally, as I might want to swipe away the clutter on the watch while also not losing track on the phone of any messages I need to return to later.
In some ways it's more like reading an expanded notifcation on the phone, then optionally tapping Mark as Read there if you don't care about it.
* Textra allows you to mark as read, and reply by voice only (not with WM, i.e. no Minuum support)
* EvolveSMS (I haven't tested this in three months) allows you to select up to three 'buttons' which then reflect as actions on your wearable
* Hangouts can reply with Minuum, and can view full conversation, but won't mark the conversation as read
Basically, in my opinion, there is no perfect Wear-compatible SMS app out there.
EvolveSMS allows mark as read and voice reply through android wear and has high definition contact photos.
I use it in combination with wear messenger to be able to view full conversation lists. However, it also works great by itself
