[Q] battery life - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody can give me the usual battery life of unrooted unmodded 4.0.2.A.0.42 update philippines.
Am running on moderate games, internet light to moderate.
Sent from my R800i using XDA App

if you're asking unrooted, i don't think i can help much because mine's rooted, but i guess there's no real difference anyway, not if you heavily modded your phone after rooting..
i just noticed that after the 2.3.4 update, my phone's battery life just got poorer.. before the update i get like 2% deduction in battery percentage if i leave it on overnight for around 8 hours. after the update however, i was surprised from 100% it splashed down to 92% in 8hours overnight without using the phone. GPS is off, 3G is off, GSM ONLY is selected and no heavy apps installed and running. WEIRD. I think ICS is the solution now. after all, SE already confirmed it coming to our devices.
fellow filipino here mate!

quote as written above.
I think it's a phone signal issue, recently i've tryied for a couple of days to go keep the phone on airplane mode (but still using gps and wifi) and the battery life was astonishing, practically zero drain in standby, (1-2% went down during 12 hours of sleep, but with alarm ringing after that ) even with wifi and heavy usage of google maps-gps battery was amazing and could have lasted for 3 days (remember, average to heavy internet, wifi, gps and google maps using).
here's my experience with tinkering with battery stuff.
I've tryied setting manually the phone operator, as somebody here said that having it at automatic causes the phone to bug and keep scanning for an operator, but actually i couldn't notice big differencies between manual and auto.
Also i've found out that downvolting isn't worth it for me. It saves a bit of battery, but it lags the phone too much and is pointless with a gaming phone since you waste more battery always going and removing downclock when i want to play and then set it back when i finish.
overclocking wastes big chunks of battery and phone tends to overheat too much for my tastes and i know that overheating = bad for hardware so for 99% of my time i'm on 1024 ghz, which by the way isn't even THAT laggy at all.
Animated wallpapers kinda drops battery life a bit. It's up to you if you want to keep them, as for me they're fine, but i noticed that games (i've tested fifa 2012) lags a lot using christmas 3d wallpaper.
taskers like killing apps are useless for me, sometimes they MIGHT get the phone to be a little snappier, but for most of the times i feel like they EVEN drain battery MORE. I notice that the apps they kill tend to respawn a couple of minutes later, and this cycle of killing-starting does nothing more than spoil the battery. But let's say it's a personal thing of mine (hate taskers).
Let's say i trust android's automatic tasker better.
I tend to keep auto sync off and background data off too. Still to confirm if the latter saves battery or not, confirmed that the first does.
All i can say about my personal experience so far, is try to go around with only GSM, try to be smart and keep it like that when you know you won't use data connection that much, and switch back to gsm/wcdma when you feel like you would check the internet or stuff like that.
In areas with bad signal (my god forsaken girlfriends house) just pop in airplane mode or leave the phone in those areas of the house with have good signal.
Yeah you have to act like a friggin inspector gadget.
Forgot to add my personal solution to battery drain:
i just bought another original sony ericsson battery and now i always go out with one extra battery ready to come and save my days.
I can only shiver in terror at the prospect that i MIGHT go around WITHOUT my Sexplay (or with a battery dead one which is the same) :| :|

thanks mate! been turning off the 3g and average internet via wifi cuts the batt in half.
ill try to set to manual my network connection. as i am using my SExplay as my cellphone.
ICS= happy SExplay! will wait for this update. loving SE now. i mean again!

i have very strong signal in my area, so i guess the phone-scanning-for-network problem is not the culprit.. back in 2.3.3, it was a way lot better..
as of today, the phone deducted 3-5% of battery life in just an hour IDLE.

Hey narflynn, i manage to get the network scan to manual and it some way i guess it saves battery. Am using it as my daily phone with some net via wifi and am still around 80+ battery.

oh yeah i forgot to set it to MANUAL, oh boy
I actually used to do that way back in 2.3.3
i guess that's what you get when you don't use your phone for a month.. you just forget your routine phone maintenance..
PS: my phone's hinge flex broke, wasnt able to use it for a whole month, maybe that's why i forgot the MANUAL stuff

How come you broke it? Was it good knw? How did u go with repair stuff? And the damage? I mean the cost hehehe.

First full day at work ..... poor reception and more poor battery life.

Today was my first day at work since i got my Desire on Sat. So it was the day without regular charging.
Firstly, reception was poor as compared to what i was getting with Touch Pro 2. Same network (Orange), same place, less signal bars and less 3G coverage.
Secondly, unplugged phone 7 o'clock this morning, 100% charged. All day only had time for couple of calls (10-15mins). Used internet (3G when available) for max 20-30mins. Tried couple of games for 15-20 mins and at 7 o'clock at night, the battery was 15%. This is not a heavy use by my standards. Used to do a lot more on Touch Pro2 and battery used to last 2-3days. (I know the capaciy difference btw Desire and TP2 battery but still, Desire should last atleat > 24hours)
Not sure if all these issues are related to Orange ROM/Radio. Will we (on Orange) get OTA firmware update like T-mobile, which has apparently improved their battery life? If not then ...... :-(. Not satisfied with the battery life. Shame it is such a good phone but battery life and signal strength is putting me off.
Whats the fun if you have a "superphone" in your pocket but cannot use it to its full potential due to these two isuues.
Mine was the same,
But after a weeks worth of usage, its now reasonable, IE 18 hours between charges,
Fon22
I totally agree, there are other posts telling us to turn off or reduce all sorts of settings, its ridiculous that you would have to run any phone at less than its full potential just to compensate for a poor battery.
Sure you could buy a second battery but if that was necessary then they should put two in the box
If you leave gps on then you are asking for trouble, a lesser extent wifi. Having a toggle on off isn't such a hardship though. Poor signal hammers the battery too.
I easily last the working day (7-7) with an hour of music and 2 hours surfing and a smattering of calls and texts.

Come on guys, if you have a laptop, and you turn on bluetooth, wi-fi, play some games etc, it WILL run the battery down faster. It's just common sense. Just because this phone does heaps of things, dosn't mean it will last forever. As phones get more features, they are getting worse battery life - in general. And android is a data centric device, I would get used to it, or simply turn off some synching features if you need to get through more than half a day. Or perhaps get a spare battery etc.
Just out of curiosity did you have your previous phone to constantly sync throughout the day for time, email, google account, marketplace updates, location, weather using gps, 3g, hsdpa, accelerometer etc? Remember some of these connect are activated every 5 mins or so. Will make it worse if you have poor reception. COMMON SENSE PPL!
My issue is that even after the T-Mobile update, last night I charged phone on this time and it would only get to 98% again. Then drop down quickly.
If I charge it off, It seems to be ok (although I will test this again.)
Frustrating.
My battery life is woeful (TMo uk, updated firmware). I've been trying to figure it out using Juice Plotter to record power usage. Basically, whatever I'm doing, if it's on the battery falls off a cliff - I'd say 10% per 30m and my first impression is that it makes little difference whether networking is enabled or not. This makes little sense to me, I've always found in the past that 3G is just about the most power intensive activity on the smartphone, but it's consistent with some experiences I had flashing roms on my Blackstone - some of them would just run the battery down, others would go for ages. One hypothesis is that when a phone is in that kind of "sick" power state, the drain is not really related to which facilities you're using, but something deeper - perhaps the CPU is running full throttle all the time, or something else. I have no idea what's going on right now but I know I have an unusable phone which lasts half the time my Blackstone did with heavier use. I think many others have the same problem and I wonder if there's a bad batch. Bad news if so as we'd have trouble proving it and getting exchanges.
My next step I think will be to hard reset and run it in a very basic mode for a while, maybe some of the apps are causing it.
I'm also finding out that battery life improves dramatically after the 5th 6th charge. When I first got my Desire I could barely make it through the day, after properly charging and letting it discharge all the way to 10-15% now I get 18-20h of battery life with wi-fi on non stop (but with the setting to to turn itself off after 15mins of inactivity).
I was very worried about this when I first got the phone, but now it's starting to be better and better at battery life. I know my demands from a smartphone when I buy it and if a phone get's me through the day I'm OK with that, plus I have chargers at home, in my car, at work, so it's not a problem
I've got one of the very first batch of T-mobile Desires that were shipped on 26th March. It has been updated with the T-mobile 1.15.110.11 patch.
I last charged it on Saturday afternoon. I've only had to start charging it again this morning Tuesday. I've been making a few calls, probably 10-15 minutes total. A few texts. Browsing with G and 3G, maybe a few of hours worth in total. Little bit of Bluetoothing, though that's only a couple of minutes worth. I've had it down the pub a few hours where the T-mobile signal isn't brilliant, so it will have been doing a little "shouting" to find and communicate with the nearest T-mobile mast.
But that means it's lasted a good 66 hours admittedly with fairly moderate use. GPS, Wifi and Bluetooth are turned off unless needed. And it's not regularly Syncing with Facebook, Twitter and all that stuff. The only regular syncing is the weather.
Not sure if these are bugs with some hardware/software or standard functionality with your usages. I'm getting excellent battery life with my usage patterns/settings and far happier with this than with any of my previous devices, since this adds an exorbitant amount of power-draining functionality and flexibility over them too.
- Heaviest use is netting 28-33 hours.
- Typical use is getting minimum 3-3.5 days.
- Light use (also the norm for me me) lasted 5.5-6 days.
- Basic inconsistent call/message/email/net/stocks/news/stop watch/GPS/ compass/notepad/office/weather/ vid/pic/audio throughout the day kept the battery at 84% after 24 hours. 3G off, using WiFi. I don't keep any but the needy apps/settings running BTW.
- Charges to 100% always and stays up there consistently as expected.
However there is a pertinent aspect yet unmentioned;
Biggest difference between my usage and the typical internet crowd is that I don't use or bother with "social networking" (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc) or its likes nor do I play any games on this (hence sync with such apps is off and any updates are set to manual). However rss feeds, e-mail and IMs with close ones I do use during the day when I have spare minutes.

Same situation as mine there.

I'm deffo leaning now that there are faulty batteries out there causing the problem. I can get good life if I can get the battery to charge properly. but when it doesn't battery lasts hardly half a day. I don't use any apps that require automatic updates (all manual or off). But net on drains it very quickly (if I leave data on). Faulty Batteries I feel.
My Desire has a better ability to hang on to a weak signal than my other phones. I am on T-mobile. Battery life is adeqaute, in that, I can get through a day of use before a charge is needed. Will switch-off GPS and see what happens -I never had GPS on all the time on my other Smartphones.
Coming from a G1 that could barely make it through the day on standby this phone seems pretty good.
I got mine last friday it has just come off of it's third charge. I charged it for 3 hours when I got it, ran it right down >10% then left to charge up fully again.
I installed JuiceDefender and bought the UltimateJuice upgrade as soon as I got the phone.
Day 2 (with JuiceDefender) - battery lasted 13h27m, thats with WiFi, phone calls, MMS, 3g, internet browsing/showing it off to mates in the pub and then listening to an album on spotify in the car.
Considering this is a new battery and it still needs several charges before it is working at full capacity, I think that is pretty good for a smart phone! It can only get better, right?
JuiceDefender - I can't recommend this app enough, I don't want to mess about with Task Killers (that don't really save battery), I don't want to stop stuff syncing (because thats the whole point of this phone) but I want to optimize my battery life to get me through the day and this app does it so well!
I've currently got it setup to turn 2g/3g off when in standby but set to turn data back on every 5mins for 30s to allow apps to sync. You can specify a longer interval which will obviously save more battery over the course of a day. The phone connects back to a 2/3g connection so quick when you bring it out of standby so your not waiting around to get back online.
Switch on WiFi at known locations - I have this setup because at home, 3g signal is a bit patchy and it probably uses more battery constantly trying to get a 3g signal all the time, than it does if it is just connected to WiFi.
Turn data off between 2am-8am while I am sleeping.
Turn data off when battery is below 15% - with my G1 it would hit 15% just as I'd be heading home on the train in the evening, so I'd turn data off just so I could send a few texts or so I had just enough battery to make a call. So I figured I might as well use that last 15% battery for basic phone operation and give me enough battery to get home! I probably don't need this with the Desire though.
Any one else using JuiceDefender?

WOW, can I have your battery please ...
What did u do to get this powerhouse. Was it weaker in the begining and got better with charges or was it like this from the begining?
I dont use GPS at all. Only for navigation, when in car and then it is on charge. Normal day.. no gps, no auto data connection - do it manually when internet connecttion is neede. But battery doesn't last a day, merely 12-14 hours. Charged 3 times yet, only 3 days old Desire.
I cant find juice defender in the market?
When I first got my Hero I remember my battery life being terrible, most of it was down to fiddling all the time, however over time my usage changed and the battery had been charged a lot the life was a lot better. Also there were a number of radio upgrades installed, which probably helped.
Since I've got my Desire, the "desire" to fiddle hasn't stopped and I feel as if I'm in the same situation as I was with the Hero.
My opinion is that over time the battery life will be better, as with the Hero.

Yes both Ultimate Juice and Juice Defender are in the Market.
Juice defender was missing for me a couple of hours ago. But actually, when I installed it thinkgs started to go wrong for me. May be a coincidence, or may be a conflict with some other sw.
Following shocking power drain, I have hard reset, and left it with nothing syncing and all networking disabled. As you'd expect, battery level is barely falling in standby. Now to start adding things back in and see what efects it has. First step is to spend 30 mins browsing over 3g, previously this would take out 10% of my battery.

JPC battery life

I know it ibeta before you all start on me, however 15 minutes of web browsing = 10% loss of battery. At that rate my phone will be dead an hour and half of web browsing
When the phone is just on stand by battery life is fine
Hope they fix this when the "official" release comes out

the screen needs lots of power, processor needs to,
everything needs the power
look it is same like brand new commputer (whit very good graphic card, processor, memory, MB) - you need good and strong power supply without it is crap ...
if you need good long working phone buy something else like :hmm: i dont know what maybe NOKIA with small BW display
no offence
I noticed on the JPC the battery drains soooo fast!
did a full charge while the phone was off today and also deleted the battery stats.. lets see if it improves

I get 2 days of moderate to high usage with JPC. I think it uses less battery because the GSM signal is better, but the screen uses more power, is always over 90% in battery stats.

For me it all comes down "display on" time.
if using 3G/edge i get 4,5h
if wifi then 5,5h (no difference if im using it during 1 day or 4 days)
JPC is same as JP3 or JMx
Screen brightness
Just thought I'd say, incase you didn't know, the web browser has it's own brightness setting. That could be killing the battery.
I, for one, already set the brightness to the first level for all aplications that have brightness setting, and still the display sucks the battey like crazy, at list with JPC. With other FW it drops even to 40%.

Battery drain was ridiculous with me. The first night I went to sleep I remember my phone was nearly fully charged, when I woke up at morning it had used around 50%... that is, 50% of the battery for around 6 or 7h just sitting in IDLE! When I actually USED the phone it could barely handle 10h with a full charge, and that's with very moderate usage. I had to leave the phone charing all the time to survive a day with it (charging in my car, charging every time I stopped near an AC outlet, etc). And yeah, the funny thing was noticing how exaggeratedly high the screen battery drain was, even though I wasn't using the screen all that much...
Some other symptoms of the high battery drain:
-Charging the phone took FOREVER with the phone being used, took a LOT of time with the phone sitting Idle, but if I turned the off the battery would actually charge very fast... that proved that the phone was draining so much energy even the AC charger (or USB outlet) couldn't effectively charge the battery while supplying power to the phone...
-The phone got HOT very easily...
How did I solve it?
Well, yesterday I decided I would reflash my device. I did a full reflash (as I always do) including a re-repartion. Now the funny thing that I noticed was that my phone actually wouldn't flash! It would always crash at the Galaxy S welcome screen... I have never flashed it using my notebook (since I'm traveling), but I used the exact same procedure I always use with my desktop back home, for some reason it wasn't working. Maybe some corrupt file? I re-downloaded ALL files (that is, Odin with the 803 pit file, and the JPC files)...
For my surprise, this time my phone hanged in a green screen, and it was really scary. I even thought perhaps the Nokia USB cable I was using was causing some kind of incompatibility problem, but that would make no sense at all... so I entered the recovery menu in my phone and reset EVERYTHING, and tried flashing it one LAST time (this time closing ALL background apps in my notebook, to avoid any problems)... and there it went, a perfect flash, as easy as they go with my desktop PC back home.
1st thing I did was a hardreset, and then I reflashed it again with Doc's RomMod V2 (was using V1 the day before), and new hardreset in the sequence. Then I changed as little as possible in the phone configurations, I just turned everything off (GPS, wifi, and even the data connection through the power button shortcut), and went to sleep...
For my surprise, the next day I checked the phone's battery use, it had drained only ~4-5% for more then 10hours, this means it would, at least in theory, be able to last for days and days in this setup...
So I installed my apps again (not that I have many), did lagfix, turned widgets and network connection back on... and it has been working like a breeze, although battery drain can still be considered high, it's nowhere close to being as bad as it was before I flashed it, now at least the battery will last a full day with a charge @ my standards of usage, that's good enough for me...
One thing I did change, I remember my screen setup was always at 10/30min for shutdown, I left it like that because I'm always using the phone in situations where the screen will constantly shut down at my face, and that annoyed me... well, this time I actally left the stock 30 seconds for screen shutdown, not sure if it has anything related, but one of the things I noticed before was that my IDLE battery-drain was as high as you'd expect from a phone that had it's screen on all the time... maybe some bug makes the phone drain screen power even with the screen turn off, let's say if you have the 30min turn-off config, your screen will continue to drain power for 30min (and there you have the reason for so much screen draw in the stats), even though the screen is turned off... despite my hardware knowledge telling me that a black screen should NOT be draining power from your phone battery, you never know how far a software bug can fck things up hardware-wise, so I wouldn't be surprise if that actually DID happen...
I could even try setting my screen back to 30min-turnoff just to check if the battery drain will go back to insane levels.. but the fact is that I'm scared of messing it up again, it's working fine the way it is, why mess it up? I figured out some things that get messed up with this phone appear to only get fixed with a new firmware flash, and I really don't feel like having to flash my phone every two days...
Either way, I hope others here can fix their battery drain... it's just my tip: try reflashing, leave everything as stock as you can (only thing I did was Doc's RomMod v2, and later Ryan ZA's lagfix, none of them seem to be related to JPC's battery drain), and see if it helps...
wth I can only get 3.5 hours max
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
After a week of using JPC I don't see any real difference in battery usage from the original stock rom and JP3, I charge the phone every second night ( battery is usually around 25% at this point).
My usage isn't that high, I have a couple of notifications running and a weather widget that updates hourly, its my alarm clock, my mp3 player to and from work (about 90 minutes a day), I make and receive 4-5 calls a day and send and receive a dozen texts a day, I check face book 3-4 times a day and on a daily basis someone gets a 10-15 minute demonstration of the beauty of this phone(note: don't let a taxi driver play with your phone whilst in heavy traffic, even if it gets a confession that it makes his iphone look like a piece of crap).
As far as screen time outs are concerned, I set mine at 1 minute but always turn the display off manually when I finish doing something with it including after I have started the music player (btw I use bluetooth headset to listen to music but not for phone conversations).
The highest display percentage I have seen is about 85% but the is usually tied in with using gps or browsing, on a day I don't use gps or browsing display is much lower, on a day that the display is pretty much off it drops to about 10-15% usage.
This phone is the first, of the several pda/smart phones I have owned over the years, that I haven't had to charge every day.
Id battery usage is not a problem for me on JPC, 8hrs idle ( sleeping ) and I still got 100% started to use the phone and it rapidly dropped.. now im playing a 2hr movie and see if i can get it to loop for 2-3 times before it shuts off.. if it reaches 6hrs then i would consider the battery usage the same.
Please turn off the GPS and a-GPS....
You will get a much better battery life.....

Xperia Ion is great, but I will be returning it today.

I wasn't following the Xperia Ion and it was a surprise to me when I read on Engadget that it was being released this past Sunday. I saw the specs and price and thought it was a great deal, so I went to the Sony store and bought the phone. I love the speed of the phone, the screen, the music player/audio options, the camera, and the minimal skinning from Sony, but after using it for 2 days, I really can't see myself keeping it because of the following issues.
***One more thing, I noticed people and reviewers mentioning the speaker not being loud enough. There is a setting that will boost the sound (xLoud) of the speaker and it sounds great. (shows how thorough reviewers actually are, out of the numerous reviews I read no one mentioned this)***
1. The battery life is horrendous, I thought a 1900mah battery would give this phone a lot of time on one charge, but I was wrong. Today I took my phone off the charger at 100%, I listened to two songs on Pandora (shut it down afterwards) and browsed the internet for 30 minutes and it was down to 70%. This is with GPS off, Bluetooth off and brightness at 30%. I've tried different battery management programs, but they don't really do anything to help. It's a shame, maybe ICS would fix this problem, but I don't want to risk losing my upgrade on a phone with a ****ty battery life and enclosed battery.
2. Auto-Brightness weirdness/flickering. I noticed this phone doesn't have the Auto-Brightness option in settings but it seems to have a sensor up front. So on occasion usually when I'm outside in the shade the screen starts rapidly changing brightness settings just like the Xperia Play used to. If I cover up the sensor with my finger it turns dark, so it does have some sort of Auto-Brightness feature, but no way of turning it off and it's not very good, it needs to just pick a brightness setting and stay there instead of constantly jumping around and flickering, very annoying.
3. Connection issues with 3G/4G/LTE and WiFi. Maybe it's the metal back on this phone who knows, but the connection is really bad sometimes, for instance today I was sitting in my car outside, I had the 4G signal with 4 bars and internet was running super slow. So I did a speedtest and my download speed was 129kbs????? (EDGE speeds on 4G). Also last night while on WiFi at home Youtube videos were taking a longtime to load, so I did a speedtest and I was at less than half the speed I had on my computer (also on WiFi).
4. Capacitive buttons are very small and you have to be precise to use them. This isn't too big an issue and you get used to it eventually, but it can get annoying sometimes.
So, the phone is great, but these issues are keeping it from being amazing, I don't want to get an HTC One X or Galaxy S3 because I don't feel like paying 260 (with taxes in California) for a phone, Windows Phone 7 is dead due to the recent announcements from Microsoft and iPhone screens are too small for me. My only option now is to just wait for the next batch of phones, I really wanted the Ion to be amazing, but I can't keep it, it's unfortunate. (First World Problems)
yeh battery life for me isn't looking to good either. I am comparing it to my Xperia S which seemed to run much longer. I took my phone off charge as well at 100% and have about 45 minutes of phone calls, numerous texts, emails, bluetooth, GPS and wifi on Bluetooth connected to Sony Smartwatch) and screen brightness turned down to about 25% and so far I am sitting at 23% with 8 hours on battery. Normally with about the same usage on my Xperia S I would still have upwards of 50% left.
I'm gonna get it go all the way down till it shuts off then charge it back up and see if that helps any.
People need to enable xLoud before they say anything about the speaker volume. not sure why it isn't enabled by default. I have no issues with the volume.
I don't have any issues hitting the capacitive buttons but wished the logo for each button was backlit instead of just the line below them.
I haven't tested wifi signal strength at home yet, will have to give that a whirl later tonight.
I have seen the auto brightness do that on my Xperia S as well but doesn't flicker all that often like you were describing.
I agree battery is sucking. I'm hoping will get better. Would probably be great without this att crap. I have been using 100% screen brightness since they don't have auto and I hate taking time switch it constantly.
I haven't had any signal issues. I'm usually on LTE or just HSPA in Baton Rouge.

The only LTE phone that will get you good battery life is Razr MAXX, that's a little issue with LTE phone at the moment.

I have gotten the ion's battery all the way down to 0 just last night(had 15% before I went to sleep, woke up with it dead). It took about 2-3 hours to be fully charged(maybe because I'm charging from a computer) and since the full charge it does seem like the battery is doing better. Had some texting going on here and there, then plugged in the hdmi cable to my tv, and played games along with watching a bit of netflix with the bravia engine on for about 30-45 minutes on the tv(note it's still on hdmi, both tv and ion's screen still active). After all those it's at 90% right now. It was fully charged about 6-7 hours ago. Total time of usage was around 1 1/2 hours.
In my opinion, the recharging the battery from 0-100 seemed to give it a better life compared to the other few days I've been using it. When I got it, the battery life went down from about 30% to about 10% in about an hour. On Monday, it was charged to 100%(without having the battery drained yet) and it seemed to die pretty quick just from texting alone and also being on wifi. I haven't changed the screen settings besides having bravia engine on and off.
I have Xperia S and it also had issues with the battery life just when I got it. It was draining too fast and many owners just like me got really disappointed. But several circles of 0-100% charges have changed the situation. I guess these batteries need a week or too to gain maximum capacity.

I did that on the first night, I killed the battery to 0% and charged to 100%, I did a factory reset today and didn't install any of those task managing, power saving, battery widget apps, hopefully it'll last longer.
I decided not to return it yet because I love the phone, I still have 11 days to decide. I'm going to be stopping by the Sony Store to see if I have a defective phone due to the Auto-Brightness screen flickering tomorrow.

Well you should get the auto-brightness flickering checked out. I haven't notice any weird flicking or anything wrong with the phone. Maybe a few more 100% charges will help make it last longer. Also go to settings, applications, manage applications, select the all tab, and uninstall any of AT&T apps that can be uninstalled as well as those that you think aren't "stock" android/sony apps. Maybe that will increase your battery if there isn't any background applications running that don't show up on task manager. Also turn off location services if you are not using it. I have noticed that location service takes up a lot of battery for some reason.
Hey Guys, I just wana make a brief comment on these issues.
Im sure these things will very soon be resolved w sony updates but rest assure soon as a root system is achieved the power to change them will be in the hands of the user. I've been developing on the X10 ever since its release and have watched it become one of the coolest development devices available half of which before Sony was really on-board w independent development.
Most of these things (except for the speaker issues, which just come w the "thin phone" territory I'm afraid) can be related most likely to excessive syncing, etc from att/sony bloat. There are some things that may be able to be done now to help but prob we'll have to wait for root to see any major improvement.
As far as the device goes, if u can deal w the speaker it will most certainly be a hellova phone in the very near future. I just ordered one and will provide a complete review as well as any tips or suggestions I might have just as soon as I can get my hands on it. Prob first of next week sometime is w I expect the shipment.
In the interim Id b happy to help assist anyone w any possible solutions I can provide. earbrain

I honestly think the speaker is actually pretty decent
Yeah, I've been dealing w the x10 since it came out and its not really as bad as made out to be. I mean what do u expect? U want hifi or even stereo for that matter then plug the damn thing in. A little dsp and it suits me just fine far as the ring/notify/speaker phone go. Xloud works pretty good for that I might add.
I'm an audio guy and its just basic physics that to reproduce sound mass = loud/bass. Sony could easily make a rockin ass phone but u w prob have to carry it over ur shoulder, not ur pocket.lOl

The first couple days I had the phone I noticed the screen flicker from time to time. It seems to have righted itself now, and the issue hasn't shown up again.
After using it all weekend Im good fellas, being the xperia/android freak I am I consider it another fine device from Sony...kudos. eb
ps: dont tell att but the 4g fckn ROCKS too. lOl

Life-Long Sony fan
Got to agree... I heard somethings about the battery life and was a little discouraged. My friend and I have been awaiting the IONs release for several months. He's the one who told me about the battery life, so I told him about battery cycling, thanks XDA members & developers.
Had mine for 2 weeks now and I can definitely see an improvement in the length of the battery life - still not X10 status, but at least all day. Also previously pointed out, I noticed that several of my installed apps are always running in the background and even after a restart are set to automatically restart. There are a few apps that will take care of this, so it's just something else to watch out for.
4G LTE signal is also a big drainer, but I love the surfing speeds, especially since there aren't that many phone using this band yet!!!
I turned off the Bravia engine and the background lite. The screen is bright enough, even when I'm by the pool reading a PDF in the sun. You can still see it very well. - Hope this helps -
Still diggn it, can't wait to get into sum customizn. eb

The trick with the capacitive buttons is to give them a real firm press, not so much accuracy. They are less sensitive which avoids the issue of false presses that a lot of the Samsung phones have (sometimes you can trigger those buttons without even really contacting the button at all).
Yeah, Im better w the buttons now. Seems to be sometimes a need to wait for focus. I guess the "focus" is kinda there for devices w trackballs or mouse but a bit superfluous on devices without. eb

As mention before, wifi suck - I sat about 10ft away from the access point still not getting a full bar ??? and signal receiving isn't great either. Compare to my HTC Vivid, I always get a bar lower on any signal (wifi or mobile). Although still liking the phone die hard ericsson fan, the picture quality is so nice - Sound is better compare to all the phone I had (Inspire, Vivid, S2).
I'm sure once get the bootloader unlock - battery and performance will be alot better !! patiently awaiting

[Q] Initial charge?

I hate to be the guy that asks this, but I just want to make sure as from what I understand this is different from phone to phone. From what I understand, Li-Ion batteries, like the GN2's, do not have a memory effect of any kind? And thus all battery calibration rituals and nonsense are entirely pointless for this handset?
The reason I ask is because I wasn't able to charge the device to 100% before use like I was always told to do with new phones. My device was turned on and used until it drained to around 10% at which point it was charged to 100%.
Now, after 2 weeks of use, I feel that my battery is not as good as it should be. I'm barely able to get more that 12 hours. I'd be happy to post some battery graphs in the morning.
One last thing, if I did mess up my battery, or if my battery is messed up or less functional than it should be, would buying a new battery fix all my problems?
Youvare right. All that calibration stuff is nonsense.
I have never charged my phone to full before using and draining the battery and my phone still lasts all day on mostly heavy use.
Could you post your batt stats?

Today I ran my phone with the "lowest" possible settings, that is lowest brightness, CPU power saving, and no haptic feedback. I did not turn off wifi. Doing this I was able to get a surprising 16 hours, although you can see from the graph that I didn't use my phone as much. Attached I have a screenshot of what it's like with the highest possible settings (no power saving stuff, and brightness all the way up, but no GPS). Sorry I don't have a pic of the percentages for the high settings, I never thought to do that.
What concerns me the most is this: even with the lowest settings, I'm only getting 2 hours screen time. (last pic)
What's interesting is that you would think that if I'm getting such poor screen time, there would be something else using a lot of battery, but there isn't. This led me to believe the problem was with the battery. I discovered a pretty big scratch on my screen the other day, and I have some monthly insurance plan from best buy, so I was thinking of just getting a new one. The longer I wait to get a new one, the harder it will be to set up everything again. lol
I noticed that compared to other GN2s, mine seems to wake up a lot when the screen isn't on. The awake periods tend to correspond with drops in battery and also when I have a poor signal. Could this be caused by my phone trying to look for signal and using battery?
Yes poor signal that results in the phone searching for better 3g/2g will drain the batteey faster.
Can you try using it in airplane mode with wifi only for a day and see how that goes?
Also install Better Battery Stats and after a day or so of normal usage check your partial unlocks to see if a rogue app is preventing deep sleep and sucking your juice.

Yeah it us definitely your signal playing a role. Also you have a lot of wakelocks showing up
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Dude you have major wakelocks that eat up 80 % of your battery!
Go to application manager and remove all the apps you don't use.
K, I agree with my week signal using battery. I only have 75 apps on my phone and they're all pretty mainstream, no obscure apps. Right now im in school with 86% battery, I'm turning on airplane mode now. I have noticed however that when I clear my ram it closes like 50-60 processes each time. I am always closing my apps, but 50 seems extremely high. im gonna turn on airplane mode and see how that goes...
thanks!
Yes, you do have poor signal but that's not all. You have terrible wakelocks pal. Install BBS and monitor which apps are the culprit. It's not about 75 apps, even 2 or 3 bad apps, which have hidden advertisement going on could suck your battery flat in no time.
So first thing, install BBS. 2h screen on time is horrible!
Btw- If you're on 3G, try to switch to 2G. Difference will be unthinkable.

Thanks everyone! I'm really loaded with school work, so I don't have a lot of time right now. But long story short, airplane mode saves my battery like crazy. I started school with 86%, turned on airplane mode, and I'm at 79% right now! more later
Is it safe to say I fixed it?
3h screen over 2 days isnt bad right? Perhaps just a bit worse than what others are getting?

Battery capacity halved after nine months?

After using the original Note, I decided I couldn't live with the battery life and decided to upgrade to the Note 2 last christmas. I was fully satisfied, and frequently got between 6 to 7h of screen time.
Sadly, since early june, I barely get half of that under normal usage (2-3 hours), and I've never been able to go a day without charging the phone. The phone is rooted but still on Rogers Canada's original firmware with the original Samsung battery.
I'm no novice to android, but I've run out of ideas. Is it normal for a battery to start loosing it's capacity after around 120 to 150 charging cycles?
1) I thought it might be related to my external microsd, because I started getting error messages that I was disconnecting, and the mediascanner process was running for an abnormally long time. I wiped the card, and the errors persisted. Finally, I removed it altogether and the mediascanner battery drain stoppped, but overall battery life didn't get any better
2) I comptetelly wiped the phone and started from scratch, reinstalling everything from the market. No change.
3) I've been checking per app battery usage with BetterBatteryStats, and I occasionnally get one misbehaving app that keeps the phone awake, so I installed Greenify to prevent a few of them from gobbling up resources. That's helped a lot, at least on BetterBatteryStats, but still the phone doesn't last longer. There is no more obviously abnormal app anymore.
4) I tough it might be related to the fact that I redirected all my work email to gmail, so I set it to manual mode, but it hasn't helped.
5) I did notice that the cpu stays either in deep sleep or at 1,1 ghz, almost without using the other speeds. I don't know that I can do anything about that with the stock kernel.
Is there something else I could be checking? The phone worked great for six months without gooing through all of that stuff, so the only thing I can think of is a hardware issue. Did I get a faulty battery?
Thanks for your insights.
Nothing lasts forever; buy a new battery
hmmm the 1.1ghz thing makes it seem like it could be a deeper issue, there is no reason it should be sticking at a frequency that high.. I would personally try to flash the stock rom fresh with odin.
That would be your issue, the high frequency, not the battery itself imo

I notice thst on mine im loosing juice quick when my LTE radio is on and I'm in poor coverage area. Switching to 4g/3g/2g only helps a lot. On day when I take few pics my battery takes a hit because all pictures backup performed by dropbox etc
