Car Charger - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I searched the forum but couldnt find any information on my particular question.
Is it OK to use a standard car charger and not worry about destroying my phone? I found one on ebay and think it might be a great deal if I dont have to worry about ruining my battery or phone.
It's not letting me post links so heres the item number. 120825299751
Thanks for your input.

Dream: buy best name brand. Reality: using dealextreme or ebay items. I personally have had no issues with ebay chargers. Just get one with at LEAST 1-2 Amp output.

I think one has to be careful about the type of chargers you buy, car or home. I have a G1 and long time ago, when I bought a car charger, I noticed that the phone was running EXTREMELY hot after charging. Even though it was at 100%, the phone was still running very hot while in sleep mode. I was told that there are some chargers that do not have a special "chip or diode" that lets it communicate with the battery/kernel, telling the phone to stop charging.
I'm not sure if that's all true or not but I never took the chance with chargers that I couldn't find reviews on. It's not necessary to buy and EXPENSIVE charger, but more so, buy one that you can find reviews on. Although, reputable and expensive often go hand in hand.
On the OTHER hand, I bought a tmobile car charger at the about this time last year. It was not cheap and it worked very well. Pushed good amperage while charging and had an additional USB slot for more charging. The problem though is that the plug itself is a bit screwy. Only charges in certain positions, and I take care of my stuff so it's a bit of a bummer. So even the expensive, well backed chargers can just randomly fail.

from personal experience the cheap accessories from Deal Extreme are very reliable, still using them after 3+ years

Failing isnt the problem. Its when they burn out your phone with it in a double suicide. Oh make sure they have an internal fuse that will protect your phone against power surges from your car

Thanks guys. The said charger thats on ebay Im looking at is supposedly an OEM sprint charger for the Samsung Epic, so I'm hoping its good quality. I'm just super scared of burning up a battery or ruining my phone. I have had car chargers in the past that did make my phone extremely hot too... so I dont want this to happen again.

oh, the OEM chargers are not very powerful
don't expect it to charge your phone while using the GPS and other stuff

Found this guys store after a lot of searching.
You get a retractable usb which you can use to charge your evo through a computer, or included AC wall charger, or included car charger!
The deal is phenomenal but the downside is its shipping from hk.
Also I can't comment on quality of build until I receive it (ships today)
Pics look good though so let's see!
Almost forgot. 12 month warranty.

Not bad, looks like a dealextreme open box item. Deals are great and all but I don't want to trust a $1 item to control the flow of electricity to my phone.
Let us know how it works out.
I didn't either, at first..
I'll let you in on a little secret, I think that whoever makes amzer's accessories makes these too.
Notice the similarity?
http://www.amzer.com/Amzer-2-in-1-U-S-Travel-Charger-Kit-P85522.htm
Exactly the same, except a blue LED instead of red..
Something to think about.
I'll keep everybody informed when it arrives =)
Just thought I'd add my .02, I ordered 2 sets of charging accessories for our 2 EVO's from a US seller on eBay. When they arrived the AC chargers would not charge the phones so you might want to be careful there's something about the charging requirements for the EVO that will not allow just any AC charger work with it. The car chargers seem to work fine, so far.

In that case I threaten to leave bad feedback, get a refund, and give it to someone else.
No harm done
Besides for 3.90something it's really not a big deal
Those things are fuggly
Those look really similar to these http://www.amazon.com/Premium-iPhon...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1278911609&sr=8-18
I bought this, and they can't charge my phone when it's on... hell I'm not even sure while it's off. It can't charge my iPhone, or my evo.
I think it's the same product.
Just recieved the stuff today (monday)
I was pleasantly surprised.
Build quality is good but not great.
Charges phone quite well!
Using ac I got from approx 96% to full in about 7 minutes.
First thing I did was check the output compared tothe stock charger.
Both are 1A or 1000mA max.
Ill do further tests later.
For now though everything has worked as expected or better.
To me it was a bargain and a good purchase ymmv..
EDIT: While turned off it charged from 15% to full in 2hrs and 40min.
About the same as stock charger, i'd say.

Charger for the car?

Hey everyone,
I'm planning on buying a car charger for my phone soon as I take a lot of road trips and now that I finally have a phone with navigation I thought this would be really handy to have.
My question is: What is the best cell phone charger? What should I be looking for? I hear that some chargers can burn out the battery if left in for too long.
Also, I'd like a charger that would be able to power my ipod as well.
Thanks!
Edit:
I was browsing around and saw this one:

Look in the captivate general thread for this discussion ...
Why would this be in general? this is an accessory is it not..?
the only thing I can say about that is ...

The answer your question is there regardless.
The answer to your question is a bit more involved than yes or no, and involves USB standards.
Perhaps it should be moved ... not my call to make.
i just bought this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230503161988
for $8 not bad
I got mine free from Wal-mart when I bought my captivate and it does a good job of charging it.

Got this same exact one and a blackberry micro usb charger. Works great.
For the love of God don't cheap out... Been there, done that, don't waste the $$$.
Cables that work for $1.70:

A quality Griffin charger for $11.50:

You haven't by chance verified that the $1.70 cable fits well in the Captivate slot?
I only ask because I have a mini-to-micro USB adapter I'm using with a mini USB cable right now and it appears to fit in fine. Unfortunately in reality the plastic around the male piece blocks it from slotting in fully and I have to fiddle with it to ensure it's in well enough to charge. Moving the phone in the slightest can dislodge it and sever the connection.
I'd like to buy this cable to work with my current home/car USB chargers but wanted to make sure it wouldn't have the same issue.
I can't post a URL yet so replace x's with t's to see my illustration: hxxp://imgur.com/TCi5h.jpg

Yea... I've used them to both sync and charge my phone and they work fine.
Moving the phone around won't cause it to come out.
Thanks, most appreciated!

It's not the over charging that's the problem, it's the functioning
AT&T not as good as Samsung
I bought the AT&T branded Captivate car charger at the AT&T store, but I've noticed that it doesn't fit into the phone's slot as smoothly as the wall charger that came with the phone. Because of battery power decrease problems, I've just ordered another wall charger from the Samsung website (for use at work) instead of getting a 'generic' one from AT&T.

I looked at this baby in an AT&T corporate store after popping open the package. There is no indication whatsoever about the mA. Forget asking a store clerk. They look at you like a deer in headlights.
I bought Motorola P513 rapid rate car charger from Amazon and it's perfect fit. Now on sale for $5.85. Btw it's 950mAh.

I just bought a random car lighter plug with a USB slot, and use my cable that came with the phone in the car. Its a little long but its the only one that fits well. I use my cable from an old bb in the house. Cheap iPhone car mount and that charger looks fairly nice

I've got a griffin powerjolt dual ... works like a champ. I do not believe that it is a rapid charger and that it only puts out the USB2 standard 500mA per port. I personally do not like rapid chargers as I've seen problems with them in the past ... but ymmv.

Question and warning (about car charger)

No, this is not another "what's a good car charger."
This is simply a warning post and I have a question about car chargers.
My warning is that the car charger that I bought, started burning after using it couple of times. Now this is the first time that it has ever happened to me. The product is this ebay link. So just putting this out there for those that will search in this forum in the future.
Now, the question is (which should go in the Q&A forum, but might as well just put it in this topic). I'm pretty sure the fault is of the car charger. So for those that know a lot about chargers and cars, do you think it was the chargers fault or the cigarette port in the car's fault for burning?
I don't have another car charger to test out and want to get your opinions before buying another car charger.
Thanks
I'd guess it is the charger. The design looks very similar to this one. From the reviews and the comments the DE design doesn't have a fuse, so if something goes wrong it will go up in flames. There was one mention of it causing sparking and car fuse blowing but that was related to the long rail touching the wrong place and causing a short.
The problem with eBay is you don't really know where that part comes from. It can be overstock of a know good charger (best case), it can be rejected 2nd quality stuff w/ or w/o reworks (can be ok, but more often not - some have reported loose solder flying around in the case) or it contains inferior parts to keep the cost or basically defraud the buyer. From my observations the 500mA chargers are a well known quantity in the market and you can get good ones easily. The 1000mA are not that frequent, but becoming more popular. I have bought 5 such chargers (3 wall, 2 car) all were sub-standard designs. Luckily I just complained to the eBay seller and the game me a full or partial refund. At <$3 a piece it's not worth it to send them back.
My preference is to find a US seller (if they have been around they screen what they sell to avoid problems) or get it from dealextreme who has user reviews and a name brand for a china seller. I'm looking to get their blackberry 2A charger and maybe a couple of 1A usb one as soon as I heard back (~1-2 weeks) from someone who has bought them.
Thanks for your input. just bought a motorola charger from amazon. Hopefully I don't experience this again.

Which Portable Charger?

Just got back from glastonbury at the weekend with a dead phone and though investing in a portable charger may be a good idea.
Does anyone have any positive experiance with a charger that they would recommmend?
The veho pebble seems quite good (5000mah) but costs around £35, i dont mind paying this but would rather hear some positive reviews first. Sadly all the reviews i can find seem to be written by the manufacturer :S
Any but...
I have found that any will work, but usually you get what you pay for...
ordered a zaggsparq, seems to get good reviews
has a 6000mah capacity and 2 USB ports to charge devices.
Ill leave some feedback after using it a few times

That didn't work for me. I have a very cheap charger (similar to the one that came with my Milestone, you just plug it in and connect the USB-cable to it and your phone) that does *not* work for the phone (it does for my iPod, though).
The "funny" thing is: using it to charge my phone (or at least try) will switch the phone's "charging" light on but no power every reaches it.
Gave me a hard time thinking my phone (or at least the battery) was broken until I found out ...

Car Charger Spec Query

i am looking for a decent [working, cheap and quick charging] car charger.
I know I'll need at least a 1amp [right?] however i have seen a few that charger at 1amp and 2.1amp
is it going to ruin my battery if i use 2.1amp?
anyone found and goodies out there?
thanks
I second this request, i've got a few generic car chargers from older gear that i've tried with the galaxy nexus. So far they all come up as charging via usb, and so the phone loses power when the navigation/bluetooth/etc/etc is all on. I understand the power requirements, and looked into the data-cable soldering malarkey solution, but my soldering skills in the "fire hazard" class at best so i'd much rather an off the shelf solution.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could point out a car charger that they know/strongly suspect works fine.
Cheers
so the same car charger i've been using for my nexus one for navigation won't work with the GNex?

No, but it won't charge the battery faster either.
More amps is fine. Your phone will only pull what it needs, even if more amps are available.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Also be aware that even though some car chargers state they can supply >1A current, some phones (like my Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus) will not recognize it as a high speed charger.
Smartphones and other devices check to see if the data pins (D+ and D-) are shorted or have a specific resistance before activating high-speed mode since normal USB data specifications say that devices should only pull <500mA from the port.
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IW79ZC/?tag=68656c7064757-20, which is supposed to supply 1A, but I when I plug my phone in with a normal USB micro cable, it says it's charging through "USB" vs "AC", where "AC" is the high-speed charging.
I've made a hacked cable adapter, though, which has the data pins shorted. When I use this with the car adapter, it charges at full speed. You should check to be sure that your phone is fully utilizing the charger by going into the Settings > Battery menu.
Hi all,
I thought I'd share how I've gotten on. There's a 2.1a charger that maplins sell that I thought might do it, but alas no - still comes up as "Charging(USB)". I know taFFer solved the problem with a little solder, and a lot of forum threads also suggest the same fix, but the last time I picked up a soldering iron actually ended with a trip to A&E (long, embarrassing, story) so I was still keen to find an off the shelf solution.
Anyway, after reading a lot more forums, I found a few different people recommending the same motorola charger. Amazon UK sell it, so I stuck in an order. Details below:
MOTOROLA P513 MICRO USB IN CAR CHARGER, £5.45*
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000S5Q9CA
*above item(s) sold by and shipped from Keep Talking
It arrived today and sure enough simply plugging it into the car results in it appearing as Charging(AC). I've not gone on a long enough drive to know about charging speed when gps/bluetooth/etc is all going, but if anyone else is after a cheap car charger that just works without hacking your own cable I think this is the one.
Cheers
***EDIT***
After criss-crossing the country over the xmas period i can tell you this charger is working fine for me. Even when using all the gps, bluetooth, screen on, etc that i can muster (while still driving straight!) the phone gains power and would often come out the car more charged than when it went in. The charger has one annoyance - they've built in a blue led to the charger which is lit up the whole time the thing is plugged in and thats kind of distracting, i don't really know what they were thinking with that, but otherwise i've no complaints.

For optimal charging, you need 1000mAh output. How much does this charger output?
