Will an OTA Upgrade after rooting brick the Xperia - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I have seen some threads with regards to people bricking their Xperia handsets after excepting an OTA update on a rooted Phone. Does this mean that before accepting OTA updates you should Unroot the phone first and then Re-root ?
Thanks.

OTA will only brick your phone if you have an unlocked bootloader.

I did wonder if that was the case, I just wanted to make sure. I will not be unlocking my bootloader so hopefully it means I can ROOT normally and not worry about OTA. Thanks !

[Q] Rooting and carrier warranty

I need your help guys,
just got my Xperia ARC and i wanted to root it by this guide and i have a few questions:
i bought the phone from an Israeli carrier (pelephone if its matter) so in the guide i need to change the carrier firmware to the original firmware and i wander if it will void the warranty. also is there any way to change back the firmware after the change, if so then how? i searched and i couldn't find anything...
thanks ahead
The thing with Rooting a phone, is that you can root your phone and still the ¨stock¨ Arc is untouched after you have unrooted.
The flashing and rooting dont break the warranty by it self.
If you change from locked bootloader to unlocked.. The warranty is removed.
Easiest way to root is:
*Download*
3.0.A.2.181 Generic World: http://www.mediafire.com/?y9s73andrl4bllc
*Use Flashtool to Flash .181*
Flashtool: http://www.multiupload.com/7H4JT35B6G
*Use Gingerbreak after you flashed back*
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1044765
*After it have rebooted and active, go to settings and do a OTA over wireless.
This way you keep your Arc locked, nothing good comes from unlocking the bootloader yet.

That's not entirely true. You've got custom ROMs being developed; over-clock kernel just released, Recovery and what not.
Unlocking the bootloader is personal choice. I may not unlock my bootloader just yet but I can't deny that with improvements being shown, it's an increasingly tempting option. LOL!

[Q] Will I lose sim unlock after OTA Update?

Hi, I have a T-Mobile branded Desire HD that I bought from Amazon. It´s sim unlocked because I´m using it right now with another carrier in Uruguay. In fact I never used it with T-Mobile.
I guess it was sim unlocked using a code because it shows the T-mobile splash screen when I turn it on and it is S-ON.
I recently received the gingerbread OTA notification and before applying it I would like to know if I could lose the sim unlock after applying the OTA, because in case I lose it, I don´t have the code to unlock it again.
The ROM I have is 1.72.111.2 and it says release-keys at the end of the compilation number.
Did someone lost sim unlock after applying an OTA update?
Thank you.
Not it will not be relocked if you update the firmware.

Thanks Rockjock007 for your quick reply.
Just one other question. In case for some reason I do get my phone relocked after the OTA update, is it possible to downgrade from the gingerbread version so I can root it and unlock it again?.
Thank you.
Well since you can not have it relocked after the ota upgrade your question is unaswerable. Blokes have done the ota update, reflashed roms left right and center and no one has reported that it relocked itself. Enjoy your handset! thank your lucky stars you are not on WND! LOL
LOL!, great. I will give it a try then and post the result.
Thank you!.
I have just applied the gingerbread OTA and it all went great!. The phone is still unlocked and running gingerbread.
Thank you!.

Pretty much every xperia play can fastboot...but if you want to test your bootloader just open fastboot, download clockworkmod and test it,if it doesn't work you can update via OTA (update center on your phone) and keep root

rooted and bootloader unlocked Phone update to pie

Hi,
I have question so my phone has an unlocked bootloader and is rooted, recently I got the notification for the pie update to Android 9. My question now can I still update without problems or should I unroot and lock my bootloader again?
Do not ever relock your bootloader. Unless you were planning on selling it.
So the update will be no problem? But won't it be noticed in the update process and cause problems?

The bootloader being unlocked had nothing to do with updating. But root might , I'm not sure I don't take OTA updates. Magisk Is a systemless root so it may work fine , I haven't ever tried.
The unlocked bootloader is fine. Worst case scenario you lose your root and have to reroot your phone, which is easy to do. I upgraded from 8 to 9 without issue with an unlocked bootloader, all I had to do was reroot the phone

Root

Is there a way to root the phone with the more recent updates? I never got the bootloader unlocked before they locked it for good
You only can root if ur bootloader is unlocked.
Since August patch, you cant unlock ur bootloader. You need to downgrade ur phone to pre august.
But your bootloader stays unlocked if you update to newer versions

Is there a way to downgrade without an unlocked bootloader? I see one firmware thread, but it says it requires an unlocked bootloader.
I'm quite fed up with the aggressive task killer Nokia piled into the TA-1045, but without root I can't seem to remove or even stop it.
