Pretty much every xperia play can fastboot...but if you want to test your bootloader just open fastboot, download clockworkmod and test it,if it doesn't work you can update via OTA (update center on your phone) and keep root

Hey guys, I'm looking to load CM7.1 onto my xperia play from Rogers but I just need a little clarification on the process. In the instructions it says the phone needs to be rooted. Now I know usually rooting the phone comes hand in hand with unlocking the bootloader, but of course with gingerbreak that wasn't true.
So I just want to know, do I need to unlock the bootloader as well or can I just use the gingerbreak root?

You don't need to be rooted. But you do need an unlocked bootloader.
Can someone be so nice and give me direction to stock debranded ROM - that i can flash in order to enter fastboot mode. i am stuck with vodafone firmware4.0.1.A.0.266.
i was searching a lot but all i could find was Lt15 (arc) and i need it for ARC S
My phone is unlocked so all i am looking for is a link to stock firmware that i can flash and continue with the process to unlock bootloader.
Thanks a MIL in advance

If your phone was branded to begin with, then I do not think that you can unlock the bootloader.
if i knew this before i would never get the phone. at least i have root and i could remove the bloatware. something is something. I hope someone will come with the unlocking option soon.
thanks for info
If it's an ex-contract vodafone then you should be able to unlock, they stopped sim-locking contract phones last year. I know cause that's what mines is...

It was locked to vodafone and got theNAC code so i unlocked it. Then i flashed stock debranded Rom but stil no change. If anyone know any solution i would be happy.

I have an xperia play n I dont knw whether its bootloader locked??
I have rom manager, from which when I boot into recovery, m while sony Ericsson logo appears, I press down volume key, then it goes to clockwork mod page.. Firstly can you tell me where you bought your device from and if it was brand new or used.
Apart from that the answer is that the difference between a locked and unlocked bootloader is a locked bootloader doesn't give you the ability to root your android device or install custom roms(custom android versions) while on the other hand, if you have a unlocked bootloader you are able to root, install custom roms and basically just modify your android phone. Although there are catches of unlocking the bootloader such as:
You will loose DRM content
You will loose some fuctionalities of your phone that are carrier specific
You will not be able to PROPERLY re-lock the bootloader in case you are thinking of doing that it is possible but you still cannot recover the lost DRM content
You will loose the ability to do FOTA(firmware-over-the-air)upgrades.
That is basically what you will not be able to do.
Although, in my opinion i recommend not unlocking the bootloader yet because the stock android on the phone is brilliant as well as that in the beginnig of April we will be getting the ICS update for our phones which would include nice features like face unlock improved camera app and other major changes which will be good. So i think it is better to wait till then rather than jumping the ship
If you were wondering it is safe to sim unlock your phone(if its locked to a specific network) since you will not loose any functionality of your device. I recommend rooting only if you are going to overclock your device or don't like how it runs if that's not the case then i don't think you should.
You don't need to unlock the bootloader to root your phone and rooting it has no effect on whether you can upgrade or not. If you don't root it you're very limited in what you can tweak and virtually everything on this forum relies on it.
Unlocking the bootloader is only necessary to change roms to cm7, miui etc

Does anyone know any custom roms for the r800i?
Since Sony dropped the ics update for my phone i immediately searched for custom roms. I'm currently on gin2ics which is awesome but I'm looking for 4.0.3 roms for LOCKED bootloaders as i have no idea how to unlock mine.
EDIT:
Any Good ROMs Will do..
Thanks In Advance!
I dont think that would be possible since the sony stock kernel wont be able to boot the ICS, thats why you need an unlock bootloader to change the kernel
So how do i unlock my bootloader?

Thanks but this was the first thing i did and im told im not allowed to unlock bootloader.
For one thing i dont trust sony anymore cuz I'm one of many that had the x10 mini then got this phone. Promised an update and kicked in the dirt months later. All i know is my next phone is not going to be from sony.
Anyway, how do i unlock my bootloader when the bootloader unlock is disallowed? There must be a way...

How did you get gin2ics on the phone with the locked bootloader? What process did you use?
I can't get into recovery mode when I try to do mine. Can't access fastboot either. Want to get my bootloader unlocked too but can't find anywhere free to do it.
Far as i kno you have to pay to unlock the bootloader sorry mates

I suggest unlocking your bootloader. Even if you find a rom that supports locked bootloader your risking yourself with a brick.
Well i have a LT18a (2.3.4 and 4.0.2.A.0.42 [im almost sure its also sim locked but havent tried] )and i want to upgrade to 4.0.4 without making any stupid move that could **** up the phone. Is there any way to update it via ota without a sim? i tried to check for updates but it says its already updated.
Iff not, could you give me a guide for dummies to upgrade it?
Thank you very much.
