[Q] 4.0.2.A.0.42 update cannot clear notification ??? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello friends,
So I just got my play around a week back. So I flashed 2.3.4 , 4.0.2.A.0.42 build generic UK from xda. Flash went successfully .
Other miscellaneous details------> I have unlocked the bootloader but I have not rooted it.
1> I get a( New system update available ) notification message for the same build that I just flashed and I can't clear the message nor can I proceed And do the update(just for sake ) as it says it needs pc companion. Basically how can I get rid of the notification?????
2> what is the best firmware and build currently purely from the perspective of getting maximum games of all types(including unofficial emulator Roms) to run consistently???
3>Is there any particular advantage to rooting in the context of games apart from getting to delete unwanted pre installed apps for more storage space .
4> I come from having a galaxy s and I used to flash numerous roms, kernels and fixes but always resulted in inconsistent performance in the end and that usually inconsistencies showing up after some use of may be a month after call logs have filled up,lots or messages, and bunch of other routine activities and finally sold it after having dealt enough with galaxy and its rfs file system and the infinite work around and patches that are present here at xda . So in general with the xperia play , with my above venture already in place, moving forward how can I make sure I don't land up in the same situation?

Completely new to android and confused

Ok so as the title says im completely new to android os, and im alittle confused. But there is a very good reason for that. I bought my HTC One-x in china (i work and live here) and it is a Vietnamese vr. that came out of the box rooted and with a custom rom.
Now i have no idea what rom it is, but i know for a fact since i get a message telling me im not on official firmware when i try and update (i get an update request every time i connect to wifi very annoying).
basically i just want to update my rom to the latest if i have to go back to stock then so be it but if there is a good homebrew rom that will allow me all the features i had and doesnt have to many problems i would rather do that.
and ive been searching around for a guide on changing my rom but being in china alot of stuff is blocked or just a pain to go to and my vpn isnt always the best.
so the information that i do know:
software number: 1.28.707.10
android vr. 4.0.3
anything else that is needed i can post up. thanks for the help
Head to one of the other forums and follow the instructions for flashing a new rom 'to the letter'
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1786696 - this is recommended as a decent advanced Rom but there are plenty to choose from.
If you bought the phone and it already had a custom rom on then your device is Unlocked and rooted already....
Just make sure you;
Make a back up of current rom, in recovery.
Place the new rom on your phones sd,
Flash the correct boot.img to your phone whilst connected with usb and in fastboot mode.
Clear cache,wipe data in recovery
Flash your new Rom in recovery
Flash gApps if neccessary
Reboot phone and give a while for first boot to do its thing - perhaps 5 minutes.
Make sure you understand 100% what you are doing before you commit to any flashing beforehand
All the best
You have a pretty old version of firmware anyway. It was released in April. If you want the best stable Custom ROM, you may try ARHD 7.2.2 Just check it here in your search box. If you want to flash it, check if you have CWM. Just turn off your phone, then press volume - button and power (all together), then in white MENU (it is called Bootloader) check if your phone have unlocked bootloader (check for word "unlocked). Then select in menu RECOVERY. If you get in Blue menu you are in CWM recovery. You may flash custom ROMs from there. But any way to flash custom ROM or stock firmware you will need a PC. If you have any questions, just reply here... By the way, as i know all Developers put there ROM's names instead of sowtware version. You may have ROOTED and UNLOCKED phone but still running a stock firmware. Then you need to relock bootloader and flash RUU file (respectivly to your CID version) to get fully stock rom and you can get OTA updates after that.
Wow thanks guys this helps tremendously.
One quick question i see it kinda mixed all over the place but i am assuming i will have to back up all my files and what not for they will all be wiped?
but i guess i gotta do some focused research and i should be good to go soon. thanks again
When you wipe your data all of your apps will be wiped. So when installing a new Rom it will load a brand new set of the 'basic' apps so your phone is functional. There is an app - Titanium Backup - which can be used to backup and restore apps each side of the flashing process - the apps backed up by Titanium are untouched in the wiping process but instead are protected and can be restored as and when you need.
Also pictures / music / video is left untouched during a wipe as this is in a separate section from the 'wiped section'

will contacts and all that be wiped as well?

You can back up all your contacts with your gmail account and that will sync when you log in to the new rom. As for messages you can download a range of sms backup apps from google play
cool cool. well i think im about ready to give it a shot. thanks for all the help guys

[Q][Advice] Stamina on 10.1.1.A.1.253 / Update 4.1 directly to 4.4

Well, first of all, hi everyone!. As you may have noticed by the title, i'm still using 4.1.2 since the update was released. The reason? well, in that moment i heard that the 4.2 had battery issues(and actually i didn't like the new transparent buttons, which is funny 'cause now i like them xd), so i preferred to wait until the following update = 4.4 (I have the C6506 Generic US version, and i didn't manage to download the week(weeks?) 4.3 was OTA before the "last" version available become 10.3.1.A.0.244 until 2 or 3 weeks ago(or 4?), where finally 4.3 made appearance for not much time, 'cause now finally the last version is the real last version).
After that kind of introduction, there are 2 problems i have in my current version. First, for about a month or 2, i have been having problems with stamina mode, it just don't works, that simple, and them appeared out of nowhere. I don't know if it was something i installed, the fact that i started to use mobile data(just H+ btw, not LTE, it isn't compatible with my current country band (2,6 ghz)), or something else. What occurs is that after lock my phone, i still getting notifications (sound, vibration and led) of apps that are not on the exception list(i already tried emptying this and same results) and after unlocking it, the mobile data and/or wifi seems that they were never turned off. Second, according to the thread of the latest versions, 4.4 is the last one available for my phone, but OTA in the update center just appears 10.3.1.A.0.244 (I use a mac so i don't have PCC, i did read that there was another app (Bridge i think was its name) for mac, but i've never tried it).
So, is there something to do to repair the stamina problem without update? Like restoring factory settings, or something similar(which i don't want to try yet, because i'll have to make a backup, and i'll have to search how restore the savegames and progress)? If the unique solution is updating, what can i do to get the 4.4 update OTA? And the most important, should i update to this version of 4.4, or should i wait until the one that solves the battery issues(which i have heard about it too xd)?
Finally, i think i didn't mention it, but i guess you could assume all versions mentioned were just stock, i haven't tried install custom ROMs, nor root it, which is other thing i'd like to do.
Thanks in advance for answers!
PS: It's my first post and i'm not quite sure if this is the correct category. And sorry for my english if i made a unforgivable mistake xd
I used NUT's .230 process and went directly from .67 to .230 on my C6506.
Didn't have any problems with skilling .101, but just in case, you may want to make a backup of the internal storage in case you have to flash back to a previous version and forget to uncheck the wipe options in Flashtool.

[Q] Scroll lags and stuttering with Android 4.4.2

Hello,
my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini stutters / lags when scrolling. This appears in every app, systems setting, when scrolling in a browser or a menu or just going through the home screens (original TouchWiz). But games are running smoothly and also videos / youtube are free from stuttering.
So this is not a very big problem, but its making the use of the device not as enjoyable as before. To be honest: Its really annoying.
Some information about the devices / firmwares history:
- Bought the device originally from a market (not branded by a service provider) with stock ROM and Android 4.2.2.
- Used the phone for some months in its original condition. Not rooted, not removed TouchWiz, no custom kernels, etc. Everything was fine.
- Some weeks before the phone offers me the update to Android 4.4.2. Update was executed without any problem. Still no stuttering.
- Because of the new permissions for SD-cards in 4.4.2 I rooted the phone with towelroot and used "NextApp SDFix". No stuttering, SD-card ok.
- For backup purposes I installed Titanium backup (after SuperSU and BusyBox). Everythings fine.
- But some days later, without a clear reason, the stuttering / lags occurs and is there since then. Rebooting does not help.
What I have tried:
- Removed all newly installed apps.
- Temporarily unrooted, temporarily removed SuperSU, temporarily removed BusyBox.
Nothing helped.
Then I had done a factory reset. The phone started up like a newly bought device with Android 4.4.2. But still with lags / stuttering when scrolling!
A question to all the Pro's here:
- Which information can I tell you about the phone to give you a better view of the problem?
- May it be a problem in the kernel - so that changing the kernel would help?
I am also thinking about installing CyanogenMod, but if not necessary I would like to avoid it. I am happy with the look and feel of the stock ROM (I am simply used to it) - apart from the stuttering.

No, I have not tried that. So you would suggest the following (just to be sure to understand you correctly):
- Do a full backup with Titanium backup (for example).
- Get the stock ROM containing the Samsung flavour of Android 4.4.2 for Galaxy S4 mini.
- Flashing the device with Odin.
- Rooting again with towelroot, installing SuperSU and BusyBox.
- Install Titanium backup and restore my apps and settings.
Is this right?

Don't know if it will help, but it's not much effort and at least it will not hurt.
Full backup should not be necessary (data partition will not get wiped - if you do no factory reset), but is always recommended before flashing firmware.
Very important is that you will be flashing exactly the same stock firmware (with same CSC) as currently installed. In that case no data should get lost, no Knox tripped and so forth.
But as you mentioned, you will have to re-root (Towelroot + SuperSU) and run SDFix.
Thank you very much for your help and all these informations!

On sammobile.com is just one ROM for Galaxy s4 mini containing Android 4.4.2, for my language, without carrier branding. So I suggest this is the right one...
Or are there any other ways how to additionally check if its the right stock firmware? Sorry for these questions, but I dont want to run into problems just because I picked the wrong firmware...

"Phone INFO ★Samsung★" is a nice app to check the phone status, it will show for instance CSC and firmware details.
From your information in the OP you run the same firmware as I do (the file name of my download was 'I9195XXUCNE6_I9195OXACNE6_I9195XXUCNE6_HOME.tar.md5').

Thats great, thank you! I compared the informations provided by this app with the firmware on sammobile.com and its identically. So I will download the firmware now and flash it to the device (after the backup is ready).
I will keep you updated if the stuttering is away then!
In the meantime: Thank you very much for your help!
Finally I flashed the current stock firmware via Odin again. After flashing, the phone booted up correctly (in a non-rooted condition, of course).
But the problem is still present: When scrolling through any apps, lists or even the home screens, the movement stutters.
Are there any other things to check in order to get rid of this? A factory reset (done before) also achieved no improvement. That's really weird...

Sorry to read that.Since you did a factory reset before I don't think it makes sense to do another one.
This is clutching at straws, but: is the issue still present if you remove your SD card?

I have tried this now:
- Removing the SD card
- Removing the SIM
- Used another battery without NFC
- Temporarily used a CPU tuner app and switched the CPU temporarily to highest level.
But the problem is still present.
Additionally I found another new problem beside of the stuttering:
- Two heavily used apps doesnt react anymore and needed to be started again (Threema Messenger and Viber messenger). Seems like the system was under high load / low RAM and stopped the apps. But RAM consumption of the device is moderate.
- In YouTube sometimes videos are shown in a damaged way and just in black/white. After restarting the video it is shown correctly.
Im thinking of two last chances:
- Is there a way to create log files of the system and is there somebody who is able to find the problem seeing these logs?
- Or the last way: Switching to another ROM. In this case I can not use the backups created by Titanium, right?

With regards to your second question:
Of course you can restore user apps and related data from one ROM to another. And for instance contacts, SMS and call logs can be saved and restored with MyPhoneExplorer. Restoring data of system apps may work but may cause issues.
Ok! Thank you very much for your help!

[Q] bricked S2 d710 w/Odin-OC ???

Just purchased a display model Sprint Epic Touch D710 and decided to root it with Odin-OC. It appeared to go flawlessly (PASSED) but when restarted several times only comes up to home screen enter pass code and home screen does not respond to anything - locks up at this point and reboots. My actual model is MV SAM710BK if this makes any difference. It came with Sprint FreedomPop. I should have backed it up before rooting but did not. Should I try to unroot it and go back to stock? Can I just reverse the rooting? Thanks in advance - Bill
Fixed problem - phone back working better than ever!
Hopefully this will help someone else who does the same thing. First BACKUP!!! before rooting or changing ROM I know this is basic but I messed up and its scary not knowing if your device will ever work again or not. If you need to "goback" like me well you cant since there was no backup so what I did was load the latest stock rom - no erase data - that WAS also rooted. I guess the worst that could have happened was I would have wiped the device and gone back to stock. Go to this web site:
http://www.rwilco12.com/downloads.p...ung Galaxy S2 (Sprint) (SPH-D710)/Stock ROMs/
and get the latest ROM available in my case it was Odin GA10_818252_Rooted_Nodata and once installed it will open Odin3Excution v1.81 interface where you connect and download with basically one click. The Update or whatever you want to call it is better than the stock one I received with bloatware gone and things working better than original. Awesome resource RWilco12's web site!

Z5 Premium E6883 has become E6633 during rooting and custom ROM attempt

Hi all, I could not find any similar discussions myself so apologies if someone has answered somewhere - maybe you can point me in the right direction because I am stuck. My E6883 phone sits with the white Sony screen during normal boot. In Xperifirm it is now identified as "Current device : E6633 - CB5A2BPCDE - 1299-6237_R10C - 1295-6630_32.2.A.0.253 - GENERIC_32.2.A.0.253 which is not correct following my customising efforts and since this does not match the phone Xperifirm bombs out. I have customised many previous Sony devices but this is the first time its gone so far wrong. I've had this Z5 Premium for a while and kept it as standard, until yesterday when I decided to root it and go for a custom ROM. I chose RXSW Moonbreakers Edition Custom ROM and having unlocked the bootloader I got what i thought was a matching kernel for my system which was 32.2.A.0.305 (originally HK). The kernel came from XDA forum and already modified with TWRP. I also loaded the appropriate SuperSU zip. TWRP loaded fine as did the SuperSU and on first boot like that I appeared to have root, although it was very slow to identify it. I loaded the custom ROM zip and two add-on packs together and during the installation TWRP found errors so did not load the Moonbreakers. On reboot from that the phone was unresponsive, cycling through red and yellow LED's only. Today my plan was to revert back to an older system or the 305 again so first I started with 32.2.A.0.224 again with a matching kernel - both downloaded independently, But Xperifirm said that bundle did not match, then when I used the official 305 Sony sin file Hong Kong bundle it is being prepared ok then the message that the phone is now E6633 appears. And all stops.
My knowledge of how this identity switch has occurred is zero. Please can anyone help me to recover the phone's original identity but hopefully still load a nice custom ROM. Obviously Xperifirm still recognises it so there is hope, and i can still boot the phone into TWRP recovery. Presumably adb will also work but haven't tried that. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. If you need more information I will try my best to provide it.
I had the numbers switch on me a few times too when doing custom rom installs. So long as you stay in the 68xx varients, you are okay since those are the P versions. It sounds like the moonbreakers version you installed changed you to a z5 which is why it crashed. The way I got around this when using a z5 rom was to also get a z5p kernel to flash in TWRP and also edit the custom rom to change the phone version to 68xx. I hope this helps. The best thing to do is re-flash the correct version of the original firmware and get the phone working first.
flash the proper VARIANT's firmware again via Flashtool, and you will be good to go!
Thanks for the input all. I will revisit this issue and try to get the phone back up. Must be one correct combination of kernel which will work.
Update
Due to various other issues I delayed applying the suggestions. I can get the phone to work very unstably as E6653 using Flashtool and a stock Sony ROM but it’s not a good setup. It is barely usable. There seems no obvious way in Flashtool to force it to accept E6883 back in even though I have these available. The default Flashtool identity check blocks it. I have tried various boot images from E6883 to no avail. Is there a known way of returning the phone to E6883 identity so I can either return it to standard or install a guaranteed E6883 custom ROM? Where does the identity reside and is it editable via ADB for example? An ideal ROM would be one which covers both E66xx and E68xx with a selection at first install. Am I asking too much? TWRP still works too. As for editing ROMs and img files I have no experience of how to do that. Reubenbrown suggested that as a possibility but I don’t know where to start. So appreciate quite detailed help if anyone has the skill and time to help. Thanks again. It’s such a great phone but needs reviving.
