[Q] Arc S heat? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i need a little help from arc S owners.
I looking into buying almost brand new white arc s from a friend but i tried the phone a few times and everytime i started scrolling trough menus or some lookingup on market and web (3g) the phone's upper back (around second mic hole) started heating up (just after a few minutes of usage) and stayed warm untill i left it to stand by. Is that normal? Does everyone's s arc S do that? It's like worm, not really hot, but i'm wondering what would happen with heavier usage than just surfing and scrolling around menus?

It's normal as the antenna and CPU are located there.

Thanks for a fast reply.
So just to confirm, your arc does that too right? More or less just bringing it up from standby makes it worm up?

Well, it gets hot fast but I can use it for a few mins without it getting warm/hot, depends on what I'm doing, but if I use 3.5G it heats up extremely fast and can get almost untouchable up there if you stream a video/tv show for 45mins.

Ok, now you are scarying me and sorry if i'm bugging you i just want to make sure before i buy it, it's quite a sum form my standards so i'm cautious.
I don't think i'll be streaming stuff off net a lot and that long, but what about 3d gaming, watching movies from sd card?
Does the heat interfere with daily usage?
Other phones do that to right? Is it that arc is so slim so its more obvious?

Haha, you can still hold it then, it's just hot and still works perfect and I have my Arc for almost 6 months now. But for that you really have to download a lot.
In games it gets hot, but not too hot, depends on how CPU intensive it is.
Playing movies is no problem.
Phones of friends get hot, too and my X10 did the same.

Ok thanks mate! Just one more, how the battery life on stock?

Two days of average use and one day with heavy.

You should buy the Xperia Arc S, I've also bought it a month ago and there are no problems.
The heat doesn't interfere your daily usage and other phones like the SGS2 also do that (not that much, but it's unimportant, because Arc S is also that fast and the heat isn't annoying at all).
And the battery life is quite good, I'm only charging every 24 hours.

Thanks, i got the white arc s and i love it!

It's perfectly normal that a phone generates some heat when being used. The thinner/smaller phone the warmer it will probably get since the heat got less space to spread out on.
The phone should however not get so warm that you cannot hold it in your hand or not use it.
When browsing (WiFi), charging, in long calls, playing games etc. it's normal that the temp. will rise.

will the heat broke the camera hardware someday as it placed at the heating part??

Mine is almost 7 months old and it was untouchable hot 2 times (charging error, reboot fixed it) and gets warm/hot often, but the cam works fine
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk

My arc s also get heat so fast with 3g on... and its untouchable there when it gets hot! i think it will boil water if i put it there

My arcs
My just hot at the top right conner when playing games or charging

I agree to the last post ... but it depends on the used ROM as well. For example: When I use FXP CM10 it's not as hot as when I use LXP CM10.2 ... But even when it's warm/hot it is still stable and usable ... I had only one reboot when I used the phone while I connected it to the charger

[Q] Phone gets extremly warm when charging.

Hi,
I am sorry if this is the wrong section, but considering it's a question. I assume it's correct.
When I am charging my phone it gets extremly warm when charging. I mean, really warm.
I can hold it in my hand, but it's unusually warm, perhaps around ~35C. When I plug out my phone it soon sinks down to 20C.
I am using CM7.1 OC'd to 710MHz. Could this be because of the OC? I think that I can rule that out easily, because I had similar "issues" before, when running stock rom.
Thanks.
I don't think that's abnormally hot...
Mine is usialy at the 35-36 degree range.
I did get it to 40 when I was playing some games and listening to music
Perhaps I am overreacting, but honestly it felt like I could cook bacon on my phone...
It's normal, I would say. Happens to me as well, and, because the ambient temperature is already over 32-33C, the phone feels its 40-42C+.
Besides, on my friends Desire, its 24x7 warm, even when not charging. So, more reason for me to assume this "overheating" is normal.
Yeah okay, thank you for your answers, I suppose it's always good to have the chance to steak some meatballs on the go...
Ofcourse it is normal at 35.
When overclocked + gaming + charger plugged + data connection / bluetooth / wifi .
Using some of these simultaneously makes battery hot.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
you can check the battery temperature with an app like elixir for example. With my stock ROM I even got a 42 degree one time when tethering internet in the sun. That was a bit high I think, but I've been at 35 degrees a lot of times with no problems

Ouch Ouch its burning

I was just curious to know if someone else's phone is over heating. Yesterday I was watching a boxing match on youtube with 4G on and it reached to a scary 121°. 4 hours later I was playing the nova demo with the screen at 45% brightness, played for like 20 minutes or so and it reached 112°. Just whanted to figure out if this is normal that personallyI think is not, and also if someone else it's experiencing the same issue. Thanks
Edit: Both of times I was indoorsjust in case someone is wondering.

Mine can get much hotter than that but it pretty much hovers around the 120 range when I'm browsing the web.
I also get this message when charging and watching a video. I need to exchange it. Just need to find a Best Buy store that has one in stock.
What do you use to check the temp?
mine gets real hot as well.. I think it has to do with charging while using though.
Woow thats amazing. Im guessing that those temperatures can be harmful to the phone right?
I use system info from the market to check my phone status very useful

It could be that and the stock charge pushed a lot of power in to charge quicker... But my input is that my phone hasnt even gotten very hot at all..

My phone was just laying in shotgun of my car with the car charger plugged in and the display on, then all of a sudden I picked it up and it was hella hot! 120° read SetCPU and I got shook, ripped the battery out and threw the phone in front of an AC but then I got worried that the extremities could possibly warp the board, so now Im thinking Im going to return my phone! In no way can this be good for the phone, I don't see how it can not get affect it when reaching 120, 130, 140 degrees!!! Im worried that in a week, a month, a year from now something will go terribly wrong and I really don't want to risk it, so I'm real close to returning this phone and just waiting for the Nexus!
I am amazed that a phone getting hot after heavy use is such a surprise to everyone. See any fans? see any ventilation? Here you are using a dual core 1.5 GZ processor, what were you expecting, ice water?
Ahh... Set CPU. So you can't really find the temp until you're rooted?
Hmm

Who mentioned anything about heavy usage and overclocking? CPU is 1.2Ghz stock buddy and I wasn't doing anything on my phone at the time it overheated...I have a Droid Incredible 2, and I run its CPU OC to 2.035Ghz and its never once gone over 105 degrees, so before you go getting all amazed, get your facts straight!
I have noticed this too.
With the phone simply in my pocket, my leg would feel warm. I could grab the phone and the phone would feel quite hot. Not so hot that it would burn my ear, but warm enough that it would feel like there's some kind of problem. Usually, heat = battery getting drained. When I check to see if there's anything running, there's nothing...
Right now, have been listening to Spotify for over 2 hours, and it's cold as ambient temperature. Will try installing some monitoring program and report if I notice more heat issues. I know the Evo3D used to get "burns my ear" hot when using it as GPS while connected to the car charger. My guess was that if the screen is on, and there's power going to it, it'd always get hot. Maybe it wasn't supposed to and that was just my assumption. However, same thing happens to this one; watching netflix, or playing a game, or anything demanding, and if I'm plugged, it will get really hot, really fast. If not connected, it won't get as hot, but "normally" hot nonetheless.

That you know of, did they ever fix the issue on the Evo3D?
Let me put it another way. I don't see any process or feature that will cool down the phone when in moderate to heavy use. I expect it to get hot. I have always thought, how are they going to disperse the heat?

Mine got hot on day 1 from youtube and general setup but after a full nights charge it has been great for 2 full days, no heating up or anything weird.
But man did it get hot!
Edit: I turned off gps the night this happened. I have been using my phone alot and have not experienced this again.
You need a dose of Penicillin and Cortizone. The burning sensations should clear up. In the mean time, stay away from strange phones and turn off the vibration loop - LOL
Sorry, but I've done quite a bit with my phone (videos, NetFlix, etc...) and it doesn't get warm enough to burn.
An Intel CPU (i7, for example) can run at 200 degrees Fahreneheit. In fact, the roof is about 100 degrees Celsius. To protect the CPU, there are heatsinks, fans, water cooling, etc. Video cards can also go up to 70 degrees celsius before showing artifacts; some can do much better.
We're commenting a heat that is not nearly that much for a phone. IF the SOC gets to 100 degrees celsius, that's one thing; 100 degrees fahrenheit...that is the temperature in many places around here.
These SOC don't need such fans, heatsinks, etc, because they're not supposed to reach temps of 200 degrees. They should be self contained.
On my Evo3D, which I passed on to my father, I could smell like something was burning. It wasn't, but it smelled like if it were, around the battery. Yeah, it still gets hot when in use, and specially if connected.
I believe there's also comments that on all new phones, the first few charges, while the battery adapts, the phone may be hot. Of course it had been over 2 months on my Evo3D and it still gets hot.
The E4gT is doing better today, but I haven't thrown any video/games at it yet; nor has it been in my pocket.
I'd say give it a couple days. I know I've reported my own concern, and I'll be checking it to make sure the "hotness" is within reasonable limits.

Anyone elses Nexus get really hot sometimes?

My phone has a tendancy to get really hot at times. Even in my pocket. Not sure why but its happened on the stock from as well as the 4.0.3 build. Just wondering if its the nature of this beast or if I should consider exchanging for a new one.
I noticed it ran hotter than it should have been my first two days with the phone (I'm LTE). Even on calls. But ever since this weekend, it magically just stopped running hot altogether. I was doing some heavy usage stuff last night and it was barely warm.
Didn't do any changes to it either so it's puzzling. Wish I can give you a better explanation.
Yes, noticed that today, but only when playing games. Any other time it is nice and cool. I suspect the protective casing I got for my GN does not help. I am not using LTE by the way
I was streaming Google Music from LTE, HOT POTATER
Only a little, but my point of comparison is my thunderbolt that would get so hot when in heavy use I'd wonder if it would explode on me

The phone gets hot sometimes..like any other device with any oomph under the hood. My def. warms up alot during some activities.
If you want to experience hot, try this app: https://market.android.com/details?...51bGwsMSwxLDUwMSwiY29tLmludG8uc3RhYmlsaXR5Il0.
Battery reported 47°C after a few minutes.
The radios aren't correct in this phone. 3g and 4g will make it hot as ever. Of you chill on wifi it'll be cool as ice.

Dammmm always the same thing, I thought this was going to fix with this new version of android but I see this problem of overheating continuing, I not understand until we have to deal with this problem, for the love of god any company that corrects this problem.
The only time my phone got seriously hot was watching a two hour netflix movie over mhl. And honestly i was more concerned about the battery temperature. Even gaming my phone gets nice and warm but pales in comparison to the heat output watching that movie on netflix. Of the 33% battery i lost watching it, i think most of that loss was due to heat. Watching a movie on amazon instant video over mhl was comparable to playing a game where heat was concerned. I only lost about 10% battery watching a 2 hour movie then. Also note my gpu is @ 384 mhz and i'm undervolted quite nicely.

Mine got considerably warm until I installed a UV kernel and undervolted quite significantly.
To me it looks like they've..generously volted the CPU in this thing.

Um do you have any idea how difficult it is to passively cool a multi core processor running at over 1ghz packaged next to radios, batteries, and other misc electronic components. Oh and let's not forget wrapped in a 9mm thin shell with zero venting. Wtf do you expect

man I love my android phone and have had more than 4, but this is a problem and suck at this point in the game, the only thing that I respect the iphone is to control the heating, and they can do that android should be able to equally.....that's my opinion and the only downside that I see android.
Mine gets a little warm occasionally, especially when gaming or streaming netflix, but not enough to be of concern. I had the RAZR before this and it would actually get uncomfortably hot against my face during phone calls, so the Nexus is a welcome change.
I agree with Slowhatch. Passive cooling can only go so far, especially with no vents. Personally, I'm amazed that these devices can stay as cool as they do.
Finally made it to a VzW to play with my next phone (NE2 up on Dec 29th) and noticed this as well. Nexus felt massively hot compared to Rezound and Razr. But I also spent a good amount of time toying with it and letting my fiancée play with it. The Rezound was kinda cool... Razr is as pathetic as its older namesakes.
I don't care though, I'm buying a Nexus even if my pants do burn up.
Tapatalk Pro Sig. Yep, boring.
I'm slightly worried about mine. It gets hot for seemingly no reason (even while browsing the web sometimes).
Maybe I'll do a bit of an undervolt and see how things go.
ya...i too have same problem with my cell
had the first samsung galaxy s and at one point had to have them replace it when overheating ruined the screen. my LTE GNEX heats up I notice when on the phone and ocasionally at other times which does have me worried given my past experience with samsung phone
just in case anyone is interested:
watching an hd mkv using mx video player with HW acceleration on: top right part of the g.nex gets burning hot after 20-30min. (i gues that's where the cpu/gpu is located)
you can decrease this by swiping out all other apps running in background and switching to SW or SW-Fast acceleration, frame rate stays perfectly smooth and voice sync is ok and cpu/gpu temperature remains warm instead of coal hot.

Phone heating up

So when I load my GN with a lot of stuff like redownloading all my apps after a system wipe or use the camera for a long time with flash on, it heats up around the camera but not the battery. I was wondering if it's normal and if others have the same experience. Post if you do pls.

it's normal when using lots of data or heavy 3D gaming. Unless it starts burning you, theres nothing to be worried about.

Thanks for the info. My GN stays at normal temp. when I'm not loading it up do much. But when it heats up, the temp. is not what I'd expect from a phone so I was kinda worried.
Mine gets warm doing anything over 3g/4g for more then 5 minutes, I see it as high as 105 F, which is not too bad i guess. I know they can go up to 140 or so I think before shutting down.
I still don't like it, but I guess all this power in these phones has to get hot.
Yeah with a computer the heat's properly evacuated but with mobile devices like notebooks and powerful mobiles you'll definitely feel the heat.
Still it's very annoying.
IIRC (from Androidcentral.com?), there's a bug in 4.0.2 and below that doesn't turn the camera threads off when using the face recognition signin. You can address this by activating and then deactivating the camera. If not, the camera simply heats up and battery life takes a hit.
I turned off the face-recognition signin and have noticed dramatic improvement in battery life. YMMV.
This do happens to my gnexus. Hot spot comes from the top close to camera area. Happens when I'm playing games or online a lot.

Hows your Battery life, Performance Etc

Hey guys, I really do want this phone, but before I buy it I want to know how things are for the phone
Is the battery life good? I hear that it comes with a 2000mah battery but offers up to 30% extra due to the power saving options, do you get more then 3hours screen on time? my Galaxy S3 and nexus 4 get around 2.5/3 hours max which just isnt good enough
Does it get dangerously hot? I want this phone not because of the camera, processor or anything like that, I want it for its build quality, saying that its made of metal and obviously metal absorbs heat, does it get really hot? also the hotter the battery the worse battery life you get if im not mistaken?
Is the performance any good? some people say it sluggish, some people say its good, Ive seen a few videos and the UI seems smooth and elegant but it would be nice to read it from people who have had the device for more then a day. Also, its a quad core A9 at 1.5ghz why does it run so badly on Antutu? i saw a 130000 score before, roughly the same as a tegra 3 if im not mistaken. I know benchmarks dont mean anything, but im a benchmark junkie
Hows connectivity? In my area its normally pretty good, although ive read it drops out sometimes
thanks for reading and I hope you reply with some good comments
Jack
the battery works for about one day ... think it could be better ...
the perfomance is pretty good, maybe the people telling, that it is poor, have an old firmware e.g. B104 in germany ...
when playing a long time or watching video, it could get warmer, but for me, it is not hot ...
alltogether :good:
I can normally get two days of light use from the 'phone (well from 6am day one to 6pm on day two). However, something has a tendency to hog the processor if I leave it switched on overnight. If I switch the 'phone off (power down) over night (from 11pm to 6am) I can easily get three or four days use. I use the 'phone mostly for sending a few texts, half an of web browsing in the evening on the bus (which warms the 'phone up) and an hour of BlueTooth music on the bus morning and evening. This uses around 20% battery per day.
I find that in everyday use the 'phone has plenty of processing power. Scrolling through the BBC News app is smoother than my old Xperia Z.
Connectivity seems fine and compared to my old Xperia Z and the iPhone 5 certainly no worse, although with the current official firmware, the signal gauge seems to constantly go from 2 bars to no signal and back again. Both my workplace and my home are in relatively low signal areas anyway and often don't get much above one bar unless stood in the right corners of the house or workshop so I struggle for signal due to my location. Having said that, despite the gauge showing little or no signal, I don't suffer from having no connection (at least no more than with the other two 'phones) and sending messages or reading websites on the bus across the transmitter blackspots of The Lincolnshire Wolds is no less reliable than any other 'phone I've used in these locations.
I think this is the best 'phone I've owned for a long time. I've not liked a 'phone as much since my HTC HD Mini, including the iPhone 5 and Xperia Z already mentioned.

Thanks for the reply, it seems that with newer firmware the phone has gotten better? Im thinking if i were to root the device and underclock it too 1.0ghz the heat would go down and also save a bit of battery life, I use this method on my Galaxy S3 and get around an hours worth of screen on time

Battery life is not best for me... I've "Cell Standby" which drains battery, but it will be fixed in next updates i think. Phone gets warm when using, but not too much.
Perfomance is good enough for me, and maybe it will be better on next firmwares. I suggest you to flash B111 rom, you can find it from Development forum. I got 13 200 score from Antutu benchmark with B107 firmware, and 14 400 with B111.
In overall .. you have to buy this phone ! Its amazing

On B106, Usually I have to charge my phone twice in a day. Due to heavy Wi-Fi usage and games, now upgraded to B107 lets hope the situation gets better.

Jack

For battery, within standby, it only uses 2~3% while the whole night (from 11.pm to 7.am). So, normally, u can use more than 36h, if u dont paly many many games.
For the temperature, its warm not hot, but i found some apps are hot, and the same others are only a little warm, i think the CPU and system optimize is not good enough for normally use. So the performance, i think it has the same problem.
Err, forgive my poor english......
