My phone has a tendancy to get really hot at times. Even in my pocket. Not sure why but its happened on the stock from as well as the 4.0.3 build. Just wondering if its the nature of this beast or if I should consider exchanging for a new one.
I noticed it ran hotter than it should have been my first two days with the phone (I'm LTE). Even on calls. But ever since this weekend, it magically just stopped running hot altogether. I was doing some heavy usage stuff last night and it was barely warm.
Didn't do any changes to it either so it's puzzling. Wish I can give you a better explanation.
Yes, noticed that today, but only when playing games. Any other time it is nice and cool. I suspect the protective casing I got for my GN does not help. I am not using LTE by the way
I was streaming Google Music from LTE, HOT POTATER
Only a little, but my point of comparison is my thunderbolt that would get so hot when in heavy use I'd wonder if it would explode on me

The phone gets hot sometimes..like any other device with any oomph under the hood. My def. warms up alot during some activities.
If you want to experience hot, try this app: https://market.android.com/details?...51bGwsMSwxLDUwMSwiY29tLmludG8uc3RhYmlsaXR5Il0.
Battery reported 47°C after a few minutes.
The radios aren't correct in this phone. 3g and 4g will make it hot as ever. Of you chill on wifi it'll be cool as ice.

Dammmm always the same thing, I thought this was going to fix with this new version of android but I see this problem of overheating continuing, I not understand until we have to deal with this problem, for the love of god any company that corrects this problem.
The only time my phone got seriously hot was watching a two hour netflix movie over mhl. And honestly i was more concerned about the battery temperature. Even gaming my phone gets nice and warm but pales in comparison to the heat output watching that movie on netflix. Of the 33% battery i lost watching it, i think most of that loss was due to heat. Watching a movie on amazon instant video over mhl was comparable to playing a game where heat was concerned. I only lost about 10% battery watching a 2 hour movie then. Also note my gpu is @ 384 mhz and i'm undervolted quite nicely.

Mine got considerably warm until I installed a UV kernel and undervolted quite significantly.
To me it looks like they've..generously volted the CPU in this thing.

I noticed my heat went down also. But i think people concerned about heat should get less powerful phones and be done with it.
Does anybody think sgx543 mp2 in the iphone 4s is cooler? Go be cool then. We are here for the open source android experience, heat and all.

Um do you have any idea how difficult it is to passively cool a multi core processor running at over 1ghz packaged next to radios, batteries, and other misc electronic components. Oh and let's not forget wrapped in a 9mm thin shell with zero venting. Wtf do you expect

man I love my android phone and have had more than 4, but this is a problem and suck at this point in the game, the only thing that I respect the iphone is to control the heating, and they can do that android should be able to equally.....that's my opinion and the only downside that I see android.
Mine gets a little warm occasionally, especially when gaming or streaming netflix, but not enough to be of concern. I had the RAZR before this and it would actually get uncomfortably hot against my face during phone calls, so the Nexus is a welcome change.
I agree with Slowhatch. Passive cooling can only go so far, especially with no vents. Personally, I'm amazed that these devices can stay as cool as they do.
Finally made it to a VzW to play with my next phone (NE2 up on Dec 29th) and noticed this as well. Nexus felt massively hot compared to Rezound and Razr. But I also spent a good amount of time toying with it and letting my fiancée play with it. The Rezound was kinda cool... Razr is as pathetic as its older namesakes.
I don't care though, I'm buying a Nexus even if my pants do burn up.
Tapatalk Pro Sig. Yep, boring.
I'm slightly worried about mine. It gets hot for seemingly no reason (even while browsing the web sometimes).
Maybe I'll do a bit of an undervolt and see how things go.
ya...i too have same problem with my cell
had the first samsung galaxy s and at one point had to have them replace it when overheating ruined the screen. my LTE GNEX heats up I notice when on the phone and ocasionally at other times which does have me worried given my past experience with samsung phone
just in case anyone is interested:
watching an hd mkv using mx video player with HW acceleration on: top right part of the g.nex gets burning hot after 20-30min. (i gues that's where the cpu/gpu is located)
you can decrease this by swiping out all other apps running in background and switching to SW or SW-Fast acceleration, frame rate stays perfectly smooth and voice sync is ok and cpu/gpu temperature remains warm instead of coal hot.

I was just curious to know if someone else's phone is over heating. Yesterday I was watching a boxing match on youtube with 4G on and it reached to a scary 121°. 4 hours later I was playing the nova demo with the screen at 45% brightness, played for like 20 minutes or so and it reached 112°. Just whanted to figure out if this is normal that personallyI think is not, and also if someone else it's experiencing the same issue. Thanks

Mine can get much hotter than that but it pretty much hovers around the 120 range when I'm browsing the web.
I also get this message when charging and watching a video. I need to exchange it. Just need to find a Best Buy store that has one in stock.
What do you use to check the temp?
mine gets real hot as well.. I think it has to do with charging while using though.
Woow thats amazing. Im guessing that those temperatures can be harmful to the phone right?

My phone was just laying in shotgun of my car with the car charger plugged in and the display on, then all of a sudden I picked it up and it was hella hot! 120° read SetCPU and I got shook, ripped the battery out and threw the phone in front of an AC but then I got worried that the extremities could possibly warp the board, so now Im thinking Im going to return my phone! In no way can this be good for the phone, I don't see how it can not get affect it when reaching 120, 130, 140 degrees!!! Im worried that in a week, a month, a year from now something will go terribly wrong and I really don't want to risk it, so I'm real close to returning this phone and just waiting for the Nexus!
I am amazed that a phone getting hot after heavy use is such a surprise to everyone. See any fans? see any ventilation? Here you are using a dual core 1.5 GZ processor, what were you expecting, ice water?
Ahh... Set CPU. So you can't really find the temp until you're rooted?

Who mentioned anything about heavy usage and overclocking? CPU is 1.2Ghz stock buddy and I wasn't doing anything on my phone at the time it overheated...I have a Droid Incredible 2, and I run its CPU OC to 2.035Ghz and its never once gone over 105 degrees, so before you go getting all amazed, get your facts straight!
I have noticed this too.
With the phone simply in my pocket, my leg would feel warm. I could grab the phone and the phone would feel quite hot. Not so hot that it would burn my ear, but warm enough that it would feel like there's some kind of problem. Usually, heat = battery getting drained. When I check to see if there's anything running, there's nothing...
Right now, have been listening to Spotify for over 2 hours, and it's cold as ambient temperature. Will try installing some monitoring program and report if I notice more heat issues. I know the Evo3D used to get "burns my ear" hot when using it as GPS while connected to the car charger. My guess was that if the screen is on, and there's power going to it, it'd always get hot. Maybe it wasn't supposed to and that was just my assumption. However, same thing happens to this one; watching netflix, or playing a game, or anything demanding, and if I'm plugged, it will get really hot, really fast. If not connected, it won't get as hot, but "normally" hot nonetheless.

That you know of, did they ever fix the issue on the Evo3D?
Let me put it another way. I don't see any process or feature that will cool down the phone when in moderate to heavy use. I expect it to get hot. I have always thought, how are they going to disperse the heat?

But man did it get hot!

You need a dose of Penicillin and Cortizone. The burning sensations should clear up. In the mean time, stay away from strange phones and turn off the vibration loop - LOL
Sorry, but I've done quite a bit with my phone (videos, NetFlix, etc...) and it doesn't get warm enough to burn.
An Intel CPU (i7, for example) can run at 200 degrees Fahreneheit. In fact, the roof is about 100 degrees Celsius. To protect the CPU, there are heatsinks, fans, water cooling, etc. Video cards can also go up to 70 degrees celsius before showing artifacts; some can do much better.
We're commenting a heat that is not nearly that much for a phone. IF the SOC gets to 100 degrees celsius, that's one thing; 100 degrees fahrenheit...that is the temperature in many places around here.
These SOC don't need such fans, heatsinks, etc, because they're not supposed to reach temps of 200 degrees. They should be self contained.
On my Evo3D, which I passed on to my father, I could smell like something was burning. It wasn't, but it smelled like if it were, around the battery. Yeah, it still gets hot when in use, and specially if connected.
I believe there's also comments that on all new phones, the first few charges, while the battery adapts, the phone may be hot. Of course it had been over 2 months on my Evo3D and it still gets hot.
The E4gT is doing better today, but I haven't thrown any video/games at it yet; nor has it been in my pocket.
I'd say give it a couple days. I know I've reported my own concern, and I'll be checking it to make sure the "hotness" is within reasonable limits.

Today I was watching the barcelona vs chelsea game on my phone and it rebooted. I picked up the phone and it felt pretty warm so I checked the CPU temp in glados kernel and it was at 64c with the "safe limit temp" being set to 61c. I was watching the game on a website that had an embedded flash player, so I had to pinch to zoom it to make the video bigger. In doing that, the video became choppy at times but seemed OK to watch until it restarted itself from I guess overheating. I started watching it again but this time not pinching to zoom the video and it hardly had any choppyness at all and did not reboot itself (so I'm assuming it didnt overheat). Could the whole embedded player thing + pinching to zoom be the culprit of my overheating? or is it my kernel/rom to blame? I haven't done any OC unless its by default in the kernel.
ROM: eclipse 1.1
Kernel: Glados 1.29RC

Not to sound rude but I was asking if what happened to me is normal and if it isn't, could using an embedded flash player + pinch to zoom be the reason to blame? If not, then does that mean its the kernel and or rom?
I don't think I should have to undervolt if I'm running on stock volts/not OC'd.
Well not to sound smart ass but I got right to the solution. Changing roms and kernels will not make a big difference and I am sure you would rather watch bigger mode than squinting. When I do intensive stuff I take my tpu off. And if I'm by my laptop, I might put it on/near my USB laptop cooler. But if you must, change roms and kernels til your content. Or take your battery door off to ventilate and flap your phone real fast like you mean it.

k ill re ask the question. did my phone overheat because of the "choppyness" of the embedded + zoomed flash player? Or did it happen because thats what you call "intensive stuff"? And would watching NETFLIX for an hour or so be considered "intensive stuff" and cause my phone to overheat and shut off as well? Or do you think the choppyness had a bigger role in the overheating.
I'm pretty sure @rbiter is semi-trolling.. at least I hope so, lol.
OP, it's never normal for your phone to get too hot and reboot under any circumstance. I would definitely try changing kernels. The ROM doesn't control the CPU clock speed and voltages, so that's what's going to make the difference. I'm also assuming you're not using the phone in direct sunlight or in an area where the ambient temperature isn't too hot.

Try it out, check temps while watching normal and check temps while watching zoomed. Then you got your answer.
Alright so you don't think the choppyness of the video had anything to do with making it overheat? because as I said before, when I left the video at default size it had no chopping at all and it did not overheat/reboot. But I'll def try changing kernels, thanks for your help man.

I would be more worried about battery getting hot than anything. That: s why I am telling you all that. Changing kernels isn't going to make your phone drastically cooler when doing all that stuff. I also do that to help longevity of phone aaaaand battery. Keep doing stuff like that just to mitigate shutdowns you're still going to come back and make a new thread about battery life being crappy and only having phone 4 months or something but not telling us you've been baking fresh batteries watching Netflix and my little pony episodes.

There's not much you can do about your battery getting warm though. It's completely normal for the battery to get warm when you're doing anything CPU/GPU intensive (watching HD video or playing 3D games). It would get warm whether you're stock or rooted with a custom LV kernel, though undervolting it would slightly lower the CPU temperature but at the potential cost of stability should he do something that utilizes 100% of the CPU putting it under maximum load. In either scenario, the phone is going to be discharging that battery relatively fast causing it to warm up (as any lithium-ion battery does in any device that's drawing 90%+ its current capacity).
The battery should last at least a year regardless of how he uses the phone before it starts to noticeably lose capacity too. I wouldn't advise anyone to not fully utilize their device just to extend the battery lifespan. Extended OEM batteries are only $25 right now. By the time it dies, it will be considerably less, so it's not that big of a deal even if that were true.

I didn't say don't utilize the phone. Keeping the battery cooler it doesn't lose charge as quick also. Electrons don't travel as well between expanded metal, cells, conductors or whatever. As these phones keep getting more powerful peeps keep losing sight of fundamentals. If I don't have any cooling handy I just go with it. But if you can prop it up without a case on it, you're doing yourself and phone a favor. Holding it in your hand with a case on or laying flat doesn't help dissipate heat. I'm outta here. Too much heat in this kitchen.

Does everyone's s3 get hot when playing games?
Just trying to figure out if it's normal. It feels hotter than other phones I've owned. And want to know if this is common or if I should return my S3
It's really warm when using data (browsing, YouTube etc.) around 95-105°
But gets hot when playing games. Around 120 -125°

The phone gets really warm on stock. The cpu has a temp control feature that if it gets too hot it will slow down. The cpu is made to work up to really high temperatures so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you flash to a custom kernel, they are lowering voltages on some of the frequencies and I am noticing an incredible loss of heat. My phone does not get warm anymore, at least no where near stock.

This. Like faux said some of the chips run the same voltage across many frequencies (in my case 1150mv) I was able to lower them into the 850-1050s which is crazy low. Remember power draw goes up exponentially with voltage change.

Is it possible that the American version (dualcore 2gb ram) doesnt get as hot as the international one (quadcore exynos 1gb ram)?
Mine gets pretty hot as well when i play for long times, i guess the main reason why many people are talking about this is that the Chipsets are located directly at the bottom where you would hold your phone while gaming in portrait mode for example. So you can directly feel it and the heat of your hand further warms the phone My Tegra3 tablet gets pretty hot as well in one spot - where the cpu is, but its not a place you normally place your hands, so you wont even notice that it gets warm.
Same thing was with my previous phone the DesireHD. It never got hot on the places where i held it, so you think it wont heat up at all.
In general though: I have some experience with cpu clocking on PCs and overclocking and stuff. It depends a little on the chipset of course but in general temps like 50-70° C are no problem at all for CPUs.
Workaround on SGSIII: Enable power save mode CPU. It reduces the clock to 1ghz (at least on my rom - stock jelly bean polish release), it still runs most games and UI perfectly smooth in jelly bean but it gets considerably less hot.
if i install many apps at once (testing new roms) my phone gets hot
How hot does the OG Pro get? What is the maximum brightness you can set it to when the phone is at its hottest?
I've seen a Youtube video wherein a guy was playing a game for just 1 minute or so when brightness dropped significantly. That was for the Korean version though.
It drops to 76% at its "hottest" which is really just lukewarm heh. The only time it happens to me is when I'm outside in the sun (I live in orlando fl mind u). But honestly I leave it on auto at 50% and even in the fl sun I can see the screen perfectly...

LG PRO go or NO!!!!!
I would be very cautious of purchasing a phone with overheat issues, such as the LG G Pro. I had the privilege of owning and I have extensively tested the Galaxy 4, HTC one, and LG PRO. The LG model was the only phone that had overheated warnings and disabled brightness. I was in a well vented air conditioned building while testing. I am not stating all LG models will be the same. I will say look closely at how many people have had the device shut down or give warnings and it even happened during a CNET review. The LG phone is a great phone, just dont feel like you have to buy a device just because. I am pretty sure better models that don't over heat as often will soon be released.
Since the SGS4, HTC One and OG Pro all use Snapdragon 600, if OG Pro is the only one that "overheated", maybe it's safe to assume that a software update can fix this.
I chalk up any overheating issues to a bad phone. There have been reports of the S4 overheating and while I had mine it never did that and my OG Pro hasn't either so far. Its a mini computer so anything can happen.
I just played with a display model in the AT&T store. The phone was shut off and I used it heavily for about 30 mins running a combination of GLBench, Youtube video, Google+ browsing... The screen dimmed to 92% after running GLBench Egypt 4 times in a row and that wasnt such a big deal.. The worst offender was Youtube while watching video. I watched a video for just a couple mins and the display dropped to 84% and at that point I was really noticing how dark certain colors were looking, like greens and blues. The G Pro is such a gorgeous phone and I really want to pick this up but im worried about this display issue. A 16% display brightness drop while in an air conditioned building after a few mins of watching a video is a problem!
I can only hope for a software update to help this... Otherwise I may join the GN2 bandwagon.

No it is not. It's not a problem of the phone.
Would you mind watching this video?
How many models of top '13year smartphones do you know which allow you keep 100% brightness over prolonged period of time been well under heavy load (gaming, benching) at the same time?
The HTC One has autobrightness feature which silently lowers brightness w/o even notifying you about it. The SGS4 as you've seen, notifies you about the brightness level has been decreased and cannot be raised to full

Of course it won't
Well like I said I keep mine at 50% and can use it in full daylight. Ive gotten it to warm up a little but that was stressing it by playing dungeon hunter 4 over 4g and in the 90 degree florida sun. And even after like 2 hrs it only dropped to 76%. That just what I experienced...

The only time my phone gets anywhere near "hot" is when I play GTA: Vice City with everything maxed out. It runs that game like a dream, BTW.

Would you know exactly how hot it gets in C? And the max level of brightness the phone is limited to at that point?

No idea about the exact temp. I did not notice any screen dimming.

There's reports on the sg4 and the one getting very hot this is a issue with all three phones wonder if its the 600 processor chip.

You can go to the hidden menu and disable the temp throtle. And the screen will be at 100% regardless of temp. But do it under your own risk. I actually got a higher score in antutu by doing it. But for normal use i keep it on. Only for games i disable the temp throtle. Theres a thread on how to do it somewhere in here.
If you don't find then: Open system menu by dialing 3845#*980#, go down the list, find items "High temperature property OFF" and "Thermal mitigation daemon OFF", check them both to Enabled ON & presto...with thermal mitigation daemon disabled you can achieve as high as 24700 in Antutu and the screen would not dim in hot conditions anymore.
Under your own risk. There's a reason why LG make this.

there aren't "overheating" issues. phones are computers and computers get hot, and phones can get hotter than most think is normal when they are actually just at normal operating temperatures. i have a nexus 4 and i have read about others getting their phone up to 90 degrees Celsius before it shut itself down because of the possible battery damage at this high of temps (this was when they were testing to see how hot it can get). even though my nexus feels hot the most mine has gotten to is about 50 degrees celsius which is well within the normal cpu range. now, hot batteries are a different issue, but the plastic in the ogpro is able to distribute the heat away from the battery, so the phone getting pretty hot is not an issue. i mean, obviously if your phone is getting up to 90 C then that could be overheating, but it doesnt sound like anyone has really gotten above 55 C which is perfectly normal and wont damage your phone even though it feels hot. if your worried about your phone getting hot then you can download "CPU+Temp V2" from the play store (its a widget) to see how hot your phone actually is. if you dont like the dimming screen then you can always disable it, but i dont think it is a big deal that it does it because i keep my phone brightness below 75 anyway.
stop worrying about your phone getting warm and just use it!

How do you disable it?
Mine gets E980 get mildly hot just like the Note II but the S4 gets so hot that it starts to lag trust met thats why i switched it for this one
I was having some high heat issues but did a soft reset and it seams to have fixed it... not to mention I have more free RAM and battery life improved a little...
The soft reset consists of removing the battery while the device is on and leaving it out four about 2 minutes. Then reinstall battery and turn on & presto problem solved at least for me.
OG PRO
The thermal throttling/shut off starts at 50C (122F) while the phones are able to go up to 55C (132F). Editing the thermald.conf fixes the throttling / shutdowns.

My phone gets quite hot when just browsing and also when it reboots is this normal?

read me!
A genuine unbiased reply, cuz I have G Pro, S4 and 808!
G Pro is a beautiful butterfly!
Though It has some heating issues. The maximum brightness you can set at the "hottest" is 76%, while is 24% less than the max, anything above 30% would be excellent for indoors, believe me!(you will get habitual to it soon, its good for eyes and affects battery performance too!)
I have GT Racing 2 and Asphalt Airborne. While playing with brightness under ~60, phone doesn't heats up!
It does so only when the load is much, and the screen is above ~75!
(save for 60-75, its a no mans land.. lol )
In a (very)bright sunny day, you will have to use 100%, else 50% will do!
ONE REAL BATTERY KILLER IS IR-EMITTER!
Newbies usually blame huge 1080p screen for eating battery, but in this phone, the IR-remote(app/hardware, idc) is the real problem!
To save battery, avoid using remote, and disable Quickset SetUp and Quickset SDK in Setting>Apps>Inbuilt!
Else everything is fine!
FOR NEWBIES,
As far as 3rd party software support is concerned, I haven't seen any proper ROM other than CM 10.2!
For me, LG UI is better than TouchWiz!
Its Lite(Technically)
it has got themes(icons+widgets), animation effects for home screen, lock screen effects, dual-layout icon set launcher(these are main things most people need a custom launcher for)
Its fast(faster than S4-S600 and equivalent to Note 3-S800 for me!)
I love this phone!
Literally, NOT BIASED!
I MAINTAIN MY PHONE MEMORY(RAM) AND KEEP PURGING MY EXTRA TEMPORARY FILES
MAY BE THATS WHY MINE IS FASTER THAN YOURS!
NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE
tc
Any more ques about this phone?
PM me!
Press thanks if this helps!
Well I just got mine today... Its FA44EWM... and its a fireball just like my M7. GSAM was reporting 109F when it was setting up initially. Couldn't even hold the thing.
Reviews said that it doesn't get hot at all so I don't know what's up with it. I'll use it for a few days and report back. Anyone else having temperature issues? I'm afraid its going to fry the camera like the M7 :\
I noticed my m8 got pretty hot when streaming video through the my dji quadcopter app. In normal use it does not seem to have any issues. The aluminum body is supposed to be a great heat sink.
I guess I'll just have to watch it then. I knew it was too good to be true asking for a Qualcomm SoC that doesn't have heat issues... At least its not the Sensation I guess.
I just ran a stability test with Antutu... Its actually not that bad although if it was on the charger, it would be problematic. Topped out at 108F/42C, started at 86F/30C
Other than that, everything is perfect on this phone. Not a single build quality imperfection, great LCD, surprisingly nice camera, and better signal than the M7 had. I don't regret it at all, the heat is just disappointing. My UAG Maverick will be here on Wednesday along with my 32GB microSDHC UHS-I card I got from Amazon for 25 bucks.
.
Mines has no heat issues. Only heats up during intense gaming, benchmarking, and for some reason it heats up when the battery dips below 20% but only to a warm touch except for gaming it heats up tremendously. Even with my screen brightness all the way up it doesn't heat up ridiculously. Overall it's fantastic.. give it a few days or send it back for a replacement.

Same here, I haven't had any heating issues, phone is always cool to the touch.
How odd... it appears to be settling in or something. I just did a run with Brave Frontier (a game which is a great way to overheat your phone) with it plugged into the charger and its at 102F. The One would be at 113F by now and no longer charging as a result. I think I'll watch it for a bit. I seem to remember that my M7 actually hit 119 when I first got it and then settled down to a normal max of 110 with it rarely hitting 113 on the charger.
If Brave Frontier didn't overheat it, nothing will. Brave Frontier actually has a dedicated question in their FAQ for LG G2s overheating and its overheated my Nexus 7 before and crashed more than once as a result so this is actually kind of impressive. I'll report back as I use the device.

I've seen 11x degrees while charging, streaming google play music, using the GPS, and running ingress all with the phone mounted on a sunny dashboard. My device is my car infotainment system so it gets used heavily in the car. It doesn't always get that warm but definitely warm to the touch. Eliminate a few of those things and it will cool down but I would still call it warm when playing a game. Unless someone tells you exactly what they're doing with the device you should take temperature reports with a grain of salt. There are a lot of variables and unless you make them the same you can't compare two different usage patterns. I'm guessing it would stay cooler if you kept the CPU and GPU underclocked but if you run them at their specified clock speeds the device will heat up. Simply checking e-mail or web browsing will keep my device cool to the touch as well.
