[Q] Blazer rom and OTA update for LOS - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

If I have the blazer rom installed will my phone update to the new modem?

Not with the OTA update that comes from Sprint as it will fail integrity checks.
If you have the EG30 modem, you can download the EK02 modem split out from the OTA and apply that individually. If you are on the EG31 modem, you'll need to wait for a full modem.bin.

Do I need to go back to stock?

Hey,
So since the OTA update has just been announced for EK02... if I am rooted on a custom ROM, do I need to go back to unrooted stock in order to receive it? Or should I just wait for someone to make a .tar of it? What are you guys doing with this news here now?

mrush, I think it depends on how fast you want to get to EK02 to fix any LoS or hotspot issues (see notes on Sprint site). You can go back to stock and let the OTA proceed in the next 10 days (which means you will have Carrier IQ again - if you care). That's a negative for me. Otherwise, you can wait for the XDA developers to update their kernels and ROMs, which they will start to do, with the EK02 kernel and modem updates over the next few weeks (with Carrier IQ removed).
Ok thats wwhat I was thinking I would do. I do not want carrier IQ and I want to go straight to Calks version of ek02 but once they are able to pull the modem and get it put in place of EG31.

There is experimental Disabling of CIQ on EK02 w/o requiring a custom ROM flash here:
[ROOT][NCIQ][EG30/EG31/EK02] Auto root your existing stock ROM (w/o ODIN/ROM Flash)
I'll be waiting for a custom version, no spying on me!
On Calk 2.0 and EG30 modem and confused.
What exactly is the new update that Sprint is rolling out for the Epic 4G Touch? A new modem EK02? What about the stock rom itself? Some minor tweak? What if I had no LOS to start with?
I was on stock rom, and then rooted with shfub's method. I then install EG30+CWM so no change in my modem. I then backup and then flashed Calk 2.0 ROM. I did not do the new 2.01a zip which if I understand correctly, upgrades the modem to EK02. According to Calkulin, his 2.01a rom includes the following:
Based on rooted 2.3.6 / EK02
ROM includes:
Rogue kernel
Most Samsung apps
EStrongs File Explorer
HTC_IME mod keyboard
ICS keyboard
Wireless Tether
Busybox
and a couple more
Is Rogue kernel just stock kernel with custom recovery?
I flashed Calk 2.0 and this is what I have:
Android 2.3.6
Baseband version: s: D710.10 S.EG30 (so I still have the original stock modem?)
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EK02-CL704398
Build number Calkulin's E4GT ROM v2.0
My questions are:
If I have no issue with LOS, do I need to install Calk 2.01a?
Will my phone automatically update to the new one that Sprint is pushing out?(assuming new modem and new stock rom)
Will I lose root or brick my phone if the phone does that?
Can I just flash an EK02 modem on top of my current Calk 2.0 or wipe everything and install Calk 2.01a if I want to upgrade to EK02 modem? I am not sure I want to do that unless 3G data speed is improve.
I thought I was clear on ROM packaging the kernel and modem together but now I see that you can have one ROM and flash different kernel and modem.
Please correct any of my misunderstanding above.
Thank You.

[Q] Instructions to properly install EK02 modem from unrooted EK02 system?

I've been reading xda/acs all day and I can't find plain instructions on how to root & flash an EK02 modem after you've updated your baseband to EK02. I kept reading that if you're on stock EK02 you have to flash back to stock EG30 to root & then flash to rooted deoxed EG30 to install the EG30 modem hack and then you can flash the EK02 modem. I flashed back to EG30 stock yesterday to download the OTA before I knew it changed my system to EK02 and about the EG30 modem prerequisite.
Now I'm on stock EK02 that I updated thru sprint's ota from the stock eg30 system/kernel. Can anyone help clarify or link me one good video demonstrating the entire process? I've been unable to find either, I've looked in qbking's thread for videos but was unable to find one for my situation. I want to reroot but with the EK02 modem properly installed this time so I don't have to use an app to tether.
do I:
1. flash my unrooted ek02 back to the unrooted eg30 rom
2. flash the unrooted eg30 to the rooted eg30 rom
3. flash the eg30 modem as described in the hotspot hack thread
4. flash the ek02 modem following the same instructions
5. flash the ek02 OTA update.zip
6. flash the ek02 stock rooted rom if it unroots my phone
7. successfully have wifi hotspot hack without taking 30-60 seconds to connect like it did with OpenGarden Wifi Tether on my non-modem eg30 rooted midnight rom?

Can't update to EK02

Stock EG30 can't update to EK02.
Baseband version says:
S710.10 S.EG30
Kernel version says:
2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EG30-CL435734
Build number says
GINGERBREAD.EG30
i used the instructions for flashing the stock EG30 [after many attempts to flash to EK02 stock] with ODIN. Placed the EK02 on external SD card and booted into recovery (stock) tried to apply the update and it fails at updating modem each time.
EK02 MD5: 49bc6cab6887015557a4d4950813c554 *182a027d4f63.SPH-D710_update_EG30_to_EK02.zip
any suggestions or is this a return to sprint repair shop deal?

To flash that EG30 to EK02 zip, you need to have a custom recovery and be rooted. If you are stock and unrooted, check for system updates.

The system update that pops up telling me about a new firmware fails at the same spot updating modem.
And after the reboot I'm never notified of the update again and checking for firmware updates returns there is no new firmware update available.
Update
Just got the phone back from the store and they don't know what the issue is but suggested that i use CWM to do the upgrade. Sadly not even CWM can flash the modem i tried, and they will not warranty the phone because this isn't a problem the phone still works but i can't update the phone to the OTA

The store told you to use a root only function? That is one AWESOME store.
And... is the update the EK02, or the EG30? I can't tell. I don't want to flash the wrong thing. The OP stated they can't update to EK02, but the commenter stated that to flash to the EG30. So which one is it? What is the OTA update?
Eg30 is the stock software and ek02 is the update .Odin the stock tar provided in the link . Update over the air from sprint.

+1.... @OP It sounds like you are making it difficult for yourself and honestly the EL13 with nociq is really the way to go. Or if you are completely stock right now then use this method hereand just flash a EK02 rom. The one thing I can tell you is never go to the store. You dont want them to flag your account and if something bad really happens they blame it on root. I know they are not supposed to but why tempt fate
i had the same problem....i flashed back to stock rooted rom....used file manager to go into the cache file....there is an update .zip file called something about EG30 to EK02...i moved it to SD card...booted into recover (CWM) update vie sd card and BAM....2.3.6....it unrooted me...i used e4gtauto-sfx.exe to reroot

EL13 to EK02

I'm currently running Calk 2.0.1a with modem/kernel EL13.
I want to run the EK02 modem with the EL13 kernel basically leaving everything alone just downgrading the modem.
Is it possible to downgrade the modem only or do I need to downgrade the phone completely with a full restore odin?
Thanks!
You can download just the modem. Use the CWM modem link in my signature. If you want to use ODIN, the 2nd post of all the ODIN threads in my signature have an ODIN tar file for the modem (as well as other individual components, kernel & rom)

[Q] Restored from Backup to November 2011 Version, Now Won't Upgrade

I managed to screw some things up a bit on my phone such that it wasn't booting. So I restored using CWM to a November 2011 backup.
After restoring from backup, using ODIN I flashed back to stock.
Now, when the phone tries to update from EG30 to EK02 the upgrade successfully goes through all the steps, but hangs up at the "Updating modem" phase. This is what I get (I changed yellow type to green because the yellow is too hard to read):
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
Verifying current system...
Updating modem...
script aborted (no error message)E:Error in /cache/182a027df63.SPH-D710_update_EG30_to_EK02.zip (Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I get a similar result (slightly different file reference in red) if I try to do the update manually.
Since it's hanging at the modem phase, I'm wondering if somehow the modem was updated earlier (I had updated to the latest February release before restoring) in such a way that it now causes the update to hang.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Why not download the el29 odin file for the rom an modem an start fresh by odin both

Are you sure you still have the EG30 modem? CWM backups don't include the modem so they wouldn't get restored. This coupled with the EG30 -> EK02 OTA update having a "patch" modem update from EG30 to EK02, means your existing modem must be EG30 or the modem patch will fail.
No, I assume I don't still have the EG30 modem (driver or whatever it is called, obviously the physical modem is the same.)
Is there anyway to downgrade the modem back to EG30 so the updates can run?

Do what gr33nd3vil said, just flash a full EL29 tar with odin and be done with it.

Just pick whichever version you want to be on and use the appropriate ODIN One-Click thread in my signature.
You can also flash the EG30 modem, but you need to be using a kernel+CWM that is EK02 or newer because the older kernels are unable to flash full modems, only patch modems. If you'd like to go this path, use the Auto Root sticky in dev (or in my sig) and root your phone (using Option A), then install EK02+CWM (using Option C). Then download the EG30 CWM MDM link and use CWM to flash it.
I used your 1-Click - scarily efficient. Didn't even have to fire up my copy of Odin, yow!
