Not sure where to start, but I'll do my best.
I am experienced in rooting/flashing on several different HTC devices. Yesterday, my father in law asked me to root his new Verizon DInc2 and install CM7.
His phone was running GB 2.3.4, hboot 0.98.0000. I used the guide in the DInc2 Forums here to downgrade to GB 2.3.3,hboot to 0.97.0000 and used Revolutionary to get s-off, flash CWM and install Superuser 2.3.6.3.
Afterwards I followed the proper the proper procedures to upgrade CWM 5.0.2.0, downloaded CM7 and Google apps, and flashed everything through recovery (not ROM Manager).
Everything installed properly, and the new ROM was working perfectly. I booted up the phone today, and it appears that I have lost root priviledges?? Busybox installer stopped working, and will not allow me to install the latest version of Busybox, even though I installed the app last night and installed the latest version. Superuser app says version 2.3.6.3, binary v2.3.2-efgh is latest version and will not update.Titanium Backup root shows I do not have root access, and ROM Manager tells me I don't have proper credentials when I go to fix permissions.
I have noticed looking at the bootloader that it shows the following:
Revolutionary
VIVO_W XB SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-6.13.1002 (note: Is this the correct hboot?)
RADIO-1.09.01.0622 (I assume I need to flash the latest radio as the radio
version before downgrade/root was 1.09.01.0722)?

The big question of the day is, where do I go from here. Do I need do a full wipe in recovery, flash superuser, and to flash CM7 again, or ???. Sorry, my brain is not working very fast yet, only been up for 20 minutes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have never had a ROM lose root after it was installed correctly. Thanks!

Try reflashing SU via recovery and see if that works. You're still S-Off so you should be good.
Thanks Tyler, I'll give it a shot, and report back
That version of Superuser provided lots of issues for me to.
It is now safe to update superuser to version 3.
This will fix all issues...
You don't need to install via recovery

thanks gents! reflashed superuser and CM7, updated to superuser version 3. problem solved!

Hi there,
A year ago or so i got a desire, rooted it with unrevoked (amazing app, thanks to the developers), flashed clockworkmod 2.0.5.X (can't remember) and leedroid's 2.5.0 (after playing around with some others). However, a few months ago it started freezing without reason. Supposedly, a reformat of the sd card would fix that. Therefore, I backed up, installed latest Clockworkmod (5.0.2, with rom manager RM) and used RM to format the sd resulting in an error. When I booted in recovery I realized I already have S-ON and clockworkmod 2.0.5 (altough RM keep saying me i have 5.0.2). After that I used unrevoked 3.32 in an attempt to fix all that mess. However, the only thing I got was to have an unrooted desire!!!
My actual config is:
Bravo PVT1 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.80.0000
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.17.05.08

I have tried using unrevoked again but nothing. Alphrev to raise the hboot version but my phone is actually unrooted. I don't know what to do, any help please!?!
Thanks in advance and apologies for the long speech
Do you have a custom ROM? then you have root. I don't think you quite grasp the concept of what "root" means.
1) You only need to run unrevoked on the stock 2.2 Froyo ROM if you would like to have that rooted.
2) ROM Manager sucks arse harder than a jet engine on full power. Do not use it, do everything manually through recovery
3) You are rooted, if your phone is giving you issues just do a full wipe and re-flash the ROM.
Full wipe:
/mounts & storage
> format boot
> format data
> format cache
> format system
> format sd-ext (if available)
If you would like to flash a different recovery, it is best to do it through Fastboot. For that, you need to be S-OFF. You have 2 options here.
1) Use the Alpharev live CD to S-OFF
2) Create a goldcard, use the latest WWE RUU to update your phone and it's bootloader, then use revolutionary
Then flash recovery.
You can find lots of help on my guide... it's not that easy to miss...
Hi bortak, thanks for the quick response!!
I'm really kinda newbie in these things. Yeah, i have a custom rom and yes, I was rooted. However, I do really think I am unrooted because titanium backup (through superuser app that comes with leedroid's rom) says at startup that I'm not rooted. Is there any other way to know for sure?
As you suggest, I thought on alpharev to s-off an then flash an updated recovery+rom. But I can't if unrooted (I don't know if that matters but my hboot is 0.80).
Is the goldcard+WWE RUU+revolutionary safe in my case?
Thanks a lot!

bortak I've read in your guide (amazing, thanks in the name of humankind ) and found that revolutionary only supports hboots 0.93.0001 and 1.02.0001 but mine is 0.80.0000.
Visionary is useful in case of not having a recovery, but I have clockworkmod 2.0.5. Is there any way to root my desire again so I can use alpharev to get s-off?
With s-off I could install an updated CWM so I can format the sd or install an stock RUU to get the phone to service center, am I right?
Thanks!!!
Dear coriscow
You may follow the below steps:
1. Download and Instal the official Gingerbread update for Desire which is available in developer.htc.com
2. Root the device using Unrevoked method
3. Flash a custom ROM (if you wish)
I hope it will solve your issue.
Thanks-

Shuprio I was about to reflash leedroid 2.5 again (formating sdcard and sd-ext). But I'll do as you say, thanks.
One thing, by 'the official Gingerbread update for Desire' you mean an WWE RUU, right?? As my phone has Clockworkmod but S-ON and is unrooted. However, yesterday I could install a new radio and RIL so I think it'll let me flash a ROM. If not (and i don't get a brick ) I think I'll go with the goldcard
Thanks!!

Just flash a rooted stock Rom or restore your first nandroid.
Fyi if you run unrevoked, it messes up the super user application so you have to clear data on it to get it working again

rootSU that's it, thanks!
My main concern was that the phone was (seemed to be) unrooted and unrevoked could not change that. However wiping the data through the recovery did it
Now I will try to fix all the other thins like flashing a RUU to update the HBOOT. If so use revolutionary
Thanks you all, i'll keep you posted as I do thing
I did it!!! At this point I'm S-OFF (I never was), updated hboot, rooted (I already was but, as rootsu said, unrevoked messed something up), fresh leedriod install and the problem about the phone freezeing randomly seems to have disappeared after a full sd and sdext format. Thank you all for the help, the guides, and so and so
I have a Verizon Dinc2. It was a .98 so I downgraded in to .97. Then I used Revolutionary, installed Revolutionary CWM 4.0.1.4. I have installed several various ROMs and they all seems glitchy. I curently have Sabotage Stock V1 (OTA Based) (2/11/12) installed. When I installed WIFI Tether and it asked me if I had root. Did a quick Google search on how to verify root and they recommended using a Terminal app to see if there is a # at the curser. Unfortunately I have a $ indicating I don't have root. This is the info my HBoot screen provides:

Any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry posted in wrong forum will try and move to Q&A
Flash super user
Flash a su zip from clockworkmod (use the ROM manager app, to download it), manually go into recovery, though hboot. Then flash the package an you should have root.
Here you go

I unlocked my boot loader, with S-ON..and i tried rooting the phone through Htc Supertool(said ROOTED)..it has installed/pushed the Superuser file into the phone..but hasn't really rooted the phone.. So whenever i try using apps that need a 'Rooted' phone..it says that Superuser has denied permissions..i just dont know what to do..Help for me would be totally appreciated as well..

Hi, I have a VM Wildfire S that I just returned to stock on with unlocked bootloader, s-off, and finally rooted it . The all in one utility from rezo69 works pretty well to get it rooted.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697985 The only issue i had with it was the recovery that flashes during part of the root process wont boot on my phone. So after getting the root files on my sd card I had to flash another recovery to be able to get into it(unofficial cwm 5.0.2.6 works well, thanks alquez). Also the su binary installed is out of date and wont update for me so I had to go to the chainsdd su website and download a recovery flashable zip for the binary. Some patience and googleing you should be able to figure it out.
Thanks
Thanks a lot guys, I got it rooted I tried your tool GuitarFreak12 but sadly it diden't work :/ i downloaded that custom recovery sugested by bobdarkside and then used a flashable root from the user rgsgroup2005, and that finaly worked. also fixed another problem; my CWM on my last wildfire s froze up when i tried to flash anything. This one worked.
Thanks a lot guys!
Flash CWM (http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvelc.img)
HBOOT>Fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvelc.img
Flash http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.2-arm-signed.zip and http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-bin-3.1.1-arm-signed.zip (You must flash BOTH)
You are now rooted.
I have been searching, but it appears that every phone is different in the method to unroot and achieve what I am trying to accomplish. I would like to unroot, load the latest ROM with updated firmware/radios and change the boot loader back to stock.
How can I achieve this?

I rooted the phone with UNrevoked, years ago and of course used Clockwork for the recovery to load new ROM's. I know that I have updated clockwork several times if that makes any difference.
Help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to give this phone to my son, but reactivating it with old everything is not working.
I have to do the same thing today, and this is what I'm using:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245649&highlight=guides
Currently still in the process, I'll edit if this method doesn't work for me.
Not totally sure that the Revolutionary method will work since the OP used Unrevoked to root his phone.
To the OP, I would go to the Unrevoked page. I believe they have a 2-step method for un-rooting.
Sent using my EVO 4G and a magic wand
So a bit of an update on what I have done over the last couple...
I have updated all the radios/firmware etc. using cmonsterf50 and Captain_Throwbacks combined update.
I then downloaded what is supposed to be a stock ROM from the Wiki page which takes you to Captain_Throwbacks rooted stock ROMs.
If I could find a stock ROM I would download and install that and then I could use the two step mentioned above.

There are PC36IMG.zips in the "Restore stock from Revolutionary" link in my sig. The latest is 4.67. You really didn't have to update the radios/firmware separately as the PC36IMG will do that as part of the update.
Thanx Captain! I acutally had to revert the radio back to a previous version for the unrevoked_s-on update. Got it all done with the three updates and only took about another hour to complete with all of the lengthy reboots.
I have S-off
Hboot 2.10.0001
fastboot returns an error for htcdev unlock
if it matters the radio is 2.15.00.11.19
I have clockwork recovery installed.
But I don't have permanent root or any custom roms yet not sure where to go from here to get the hboot updated so hopefully I can make it permanent root & install a rom.

Boot into cwm and flash a Superuser zip. Then you will have root and S off.
Running a RUU will be the best way to update your Hboot, firmware, software, etc. As stated above, to obtain root just install the latest version of SuperSU or Superuser via recovery.
