Any have this happen every time they reboot?
I saw this after I initially setup phone and it downloaded my market apps, on the following reboot it said this message.. But I just noticed it does it on every reboot. I thought maybe some app maybe half installed or something, so I cleared cache and delvik cache by booting CWR.img. Upon next boot, it rebuilt the cache for all my apps, but then all following reboots still give me this message:
Code:
Android is Updating: Starting Applications
I ran a logcat of the bootup process, and killed the logging after it was booted and past this message... but I don't really see anything that stands out (at least to me, I'm no expert at reading these logs or understanding the boot process).
Anyone have any ideas, or experience with logcats?
Attached is the logcat.
after i did my initial setup and then rebooted mine said the same then changed to 'optimizing applications' then counted through all the apps i installed,
id assume the message appears to prevent user interactions so when the launcher launches its fast rather than the lag present on older versions after the boot up, its a minor issue but when it comes to user experience this delay give the illusion of faster performance after boots.
it does happens all the time (every reboot).
however, if there is some actual update task, it will say
Android is Updating: 1 of XX
sort of thing.
i got this when i update to the volume bug fix.

Yes, it's normal.
Happens for me every time too. Seems to be a normal process for the GN.
Okay, thanks for the replies!
I guess I didn't notice it the first few times I rebooted it out of the box. Thought something got messed up.
edit: (Just found out there is a 5 per day thanks limit too )

So this is just a visual update for some underlying process that was already present, in Gingerbread ? Or what ? Waiting for a more technical explanation...
Just fixed that by
Code:
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/framework/com.google.widevine.software.drm.jar
Don't know why, it just works.
Doesn't happen to me, so I'd say it's not totally normal.

that's totaly not normal. That mean that either your cache is removed at each reboot or that your cache is corrupt. I saw a solution a few post before mine and i think you should try it, if it does not work , wipe everything and start from a fresh install.
I've seen it happen when you wipe cache and take a backup from recovery. But only on the first reboot after that action, definetly not on every reboot.
my nexus did from the 1st start up NEW my vivid also does it its a ics thing
Only happens when updating a ROM or wiping caches here

Had same problem reflashed rom and fixed
I doubt that's normal. I only had to do it every single time I cleared the dalvik cache when I replaced the services.jar file or when I installed a new rom without clearing any previous data.. Never had to run that ever since.
That is fine OP. But if you are seeing "optimising applications" every reboot, then something is wrong.

Whenever you wipe the dalvik cache you will be prompted with this message on boot. It is normal. If it does not happen, then you should be worried.
Nexus S. (GSM i9020a)
Paranoid (1.991 - 4.1.1)
Air Kernel (Week 193 - Vodoo)
Ondemmand (1000/200)
Deep Idle (On - Deadline)
BLX (98 - Inverted. Apps)
Black Exodus (UnderVolted)
It will say Starting Applications on each normal boot, and Upgrading Application XXX of XXX when cache is cleared. Either way, the title of the window is "Android is Updating"

A few months ago, using ROM manager, I upgraded my ROM from Revolution to cyanogenmod 6. I then updated frequently, following all of the nightlies with great success. I jumped onto CM7 when it came out and it worked. When I tried to update past the first release candidate, however, I noticed my stock Browser, Gmail, Maps, Google Documents, and Google Reader now crash. I even cleared all caches and data upon updating.
BROWSER and MAPS problem description: Both programs begin to open up and refresh themselves and then almost immediately disappear--sending me back to the home screen of my phone.
GMAIL and DOCs let me see myheaders, but when I click on one, it starts to open, blinks and attempts to refresh a few times, then sends me back to the list of message headers (gmail) while Docs sends me to the phone home screen.
Again, I am not getting force close messages. I have tried using ROM manager to fix permissions w/ restart to no avail. I tried redownloading Google Apps from ROM manager for 2.3.4, reflashed the Gapps, still no go.
I am completely baffled. Does anyone know what is causing the problem?
Tried a complete wipe? As in wipe data/factory reset, format boot and system?

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm sweating over here.
I just wiped data/factory reset, format boot and format system, reinstalled ROM w/ Gapps from ROM Manager, fixed permissions.
(1) The stock Browser still closes itself w/o opening any pages (no force close message). Just has Google's web address in the bar at the top, looks like its going to open it and POOF. Gone. No force close.
(2) Maps - Opens, zooms in on my location, looks good and then POOF. Gone. No force close.
(3) Gmail - Shows me headers, seems stable, click on header, looks like it's opening, white screen swipes in, sends me back to headers.
Basically, not much changed after the wipes.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: I am using an Seiko(sp?) extended battery. Could this be a factor?
If you are using cm7.x.x, make sure you are installing the correct gapps. make sur you are installing the gb-gapps for cm7. Hopefully that wil work for you.

I downloaded the newest gapps in Rom Manager and applied. Same issues.
Just to be sure, this is what I consider a full wipe:
In recovery:
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Under Mounts and storage:
Format boot
Format system
Format cache
Format data
Under advanced:
Wipe dalvick
Back to recovery:
Install rom/gapps
Use cwm 3.0.0.7 for amoled
Use cwm 3.0.0.8 for slcd
Do all of this from recovery, not through rom manager.
That was some seriously detailed instructions. Wow - much appreciated. Followed to the detail in case I missed something that I didn't wipe. *FINGERS CROSSED*
Argh. When I booted, punched in my Google account, the Market installer came up, checked all, ended up in endless Market white-screen loop. Let it sit for quite a while, the beast never stopped, restarted. Got to the home screen and tried opening the browser... still not working.
Between this and last message, I restored my old 7.0 ROM and like I thought, it was still working. *MIND BLOWN*
Not sure what else to try at this point. I've never had a problem installing gapps on cm7. If I think of something more, I'll certainly repost.

Hi all,
For past few days i have been getting the strange issue. When i turn on my phone nothing would come and only black screen would show up. Then after few seconds i get message saying "launcher is not responding"...
I have tried both stock and nova launcher but same issue. I reflashed stock rom again and still same problem.
My Rom: ICS 4.0.2 Stock and stock kernel.
I want to keep stock rom so what is the solution? Why does this happen? Thanks

did you at any point between flashes, factory reseted the device?
did you try clearing app data/cache?
concerning nova launcher, you should post this under its related thread
concerning stock launcher, you should try and reach [email protected] groups
people flash all kinds of stuff but one ANR (application not responding) comes along and all hell breaks loose. get adb logcat when you're booting up/entering Android UI.
i can't wipe data or cache as i have stock recovery.I don't have CWM. i will upload the logcat soon. Thanks

if you press up (or up+power) on stock recovery, it will give you a recovery menu if i'm not mistaken (i may not recall it correctly).
and i was talking about the app data/cache that you clear in Settings > Apps as well, not just the ones in recovery.

Here is the Logcat. I already wiped everything when i flashed stock rom 4.0.2 with XXKK6.
Launcher not Responding
I'm getting a similar problem with my new Galaxy Nexus. I'm running stock ICS 4.0.1, kernel 3.0.1 on the bell mobility network. I've installed a few apps, but nothing which seems too unpopular. Here is the list I had installed when the launcher was performing flawlessly:
Swype Keyboard
Draw Free
Bell Mobile TV
Volume+
Here's what I've installed recently since launcher has become unstable:
Flashlight v. 1.3.0
Skype
StumbleUpon
TED
Sudoku Free
Here's whats been installed since:
Tip n Split
Antivirus Free
RealCalc
Quite regularly I am getting the "Launcher is not responding" message with a request to wait, report, or close the launcher. The home screen will lock up temporarily and none of the buttons will become usable. I've checked the ram usage, and it is holding at around 400mb. Clearing a bunch of apps from the cache or running screen does not change the frequency of freezes. I have also tried resetting the Nexus to factory defaults without any new apps, but it only took about an hour before I got the 'Launcher is not responding' message.
Anyone have any ideas for re-stabilizing ICS?
Thanks!
There is a part in the logcat talking about a channel that is unrecoverably broken... seems 1 of the fc's, power outage or something else left a file half written in your system.
Try performing a factory reset (which will wipe all userdata and give you a clean system)
if this doesn't work and you've had your phone unlocked reflash the system, boot and recovery again (using fastboot) (how to do that is explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881 )
If you have not tempered wit the system in any way (not rooted, no custom roms and no custom recovery) send it back to the store and get it fixed under warranty. When you can't or don't want to contact your seller proceed with reflashing your system at your own risk.

Hi there guys,
I had an issue last night which seems to have "corrupted" data on my phone. I'll try to explain. I am running AOKP milestone 5 with Franco's 512GPU #191 and I was on the Play Store updating some apps. I remember that it was something like 10 apps being updated (I recall seeing Youtube, Google+, Maps, Instagram and Chrome in the list to update). While the apps were updating I went to the Franco Kernel updater app and changed the Power Mode to one of my customs, that is max CPU 15xx MHz, min CPU 12xx MHz, governor Performance. Went back to the Play Store to check how the updates were going and then the screen went black and the phone started to reboot. After that, it took more than the usual time to boot and when it finally did, I had everything "messed up". I had a dialog asking me what launcher I want to use, I choose Nova and all the widgets can't be loaded, followed with lots of Force Closes. Almost every app I try to enter leads to a force close, and I have noticed that when, for instance, I open Toshl or other apps in which I had info, before it force closes it behaves like it was the first time I open the app (asking for the login info, etc).
I tried going to recovery to clear Dalvik cache and cache partition, tried to Fix permissions, without any luck. Is there anything I should try to do before wiping everything? I have some app's data that I didn't want to lose... I could try to get some logs if someone leads me on how to do that.
I really don't think that this is directly related to Franco's kernel or AOKP, but would sure appreciate some help/guidance!
Thanks!
Also I have just tried to dirty flash AOKP M5 and gapps again (wiping cache partition and dalvik cache) without any luck... Anyone has other ideas I should try before performing a full wipe? I am leaving the full wipe to my last resource.
Thanks
Try running using fix permissions from your recovery, it sounds like they may have gotten messed up
Should I reflash ROM and gapps after fixing permissions in the recovery? Or just fix the permissions and reboot?
Thanks!
Also, how long should it take to run the Fix permissions? My recovery is showing me "Fixing permissions..." for almost 10 minutes. Is this expected?
Thanks!
EDIT - It seems like I had the same problem reported here: http://www.drewgreen.net/wordpress/tag/galaxy-nexus/
I followed the steps and am now waiting for the fix permissions to finish. Will let you know if it helped!
EDIT 2 - Although I don't think it is perfect (I'm still getting FC's on Swiftkey, for instance), it has recovered almost everything! Now it's maybe a good time to make some backups and do a clean install!
Thanks!!
Using Titanium backup I removed Voice command and installed s voice and started playing around with it working flawlessly. I went to market and started updating my apps (Just got the phone a few days ago) and tried to take a screenshot. I forgot what the command was (Power and home?) and I held power too long not knowing it's a force restart, and my phone well, restarted.... I turned it back on and it got stuck at the samsung loading bar screen and it hung with a small chunk left. Thinking something was wrong I rebooted into recover and wiped Cache. Phone booted fine but I couldn't reset my clock settings via No-frills. It said it stuck but I didn't see a change. Next thing I know everything was force closing including process.acore.
Restarted again and same thing, it got stuck at the loading bar, so this time I wiped cache and Dcache and it hung for a little, but finally finshed and rebooted, only this time it keeps saying "Unfortnately, Swype has stopped." and I can't switch keyboards.
Stock JB TouchWiz with root using TWRP. Pretty much barebones stock rom with a few safe apps disabled and the one Voice Command removed.
Help?
Which version of TWRP? 2.5.0, 2.4.4, etc. For me to get the JB roms working I had to use thederekjay's Darkside cache wipe after install. No problems since then. You can find his super wipe and cache wipe on the interwebs, he isn't hosting them on xda anymore.
2.4.4, I was unaware there was a more recent version.
This time I tried fixing permissions and still, swype is unresponsive and keeps crashing. Could you maybe link the cache wipe? My laptop is old as hell and would take me the rest of the day trying to just navigate away from this page.
I sent you a PM.
OMG TY SO MUCH. Idk if it was the wipe script or that I shut the phone off for a little bit, but it fixed my problem. TY TY TY TY TY. Thumbs up are totally going to you. If thederekjay is still here, I'll try and thumb him up too.
NP, the scripts have saved my ass a couple times!

I have a HTC Wildfire S, rooted, with an AOKP rom.
One day, my phone was running slow, so I rebooted into recovery and cleared dalvik cache and system cache. I rebooted the system and absolutely NOTHING is working. after I unlock the phone, a bunch of processes stop working. Pressing the home button makes Nova Launcher crash. I have since uninstalled it, and still nothing is working.
I can't even turn the phone off using the power button. The only way I can shut the screen off is by removing the battery manually.
EDIT: I tried a factory reset, and it's still the same as before. NOTHING is working. I can go into Settings, that's about it.
A list of apps that stop working:
Link2sd
facebook
outlook
yahoo weather
google.process.gapps
nova launcher
swiftkey
superuser
ETC..
I have attached pictures so you guys can have a sense of what my problem is. Sorry if the pictures are blurry, I had to use my Ipod touch to take them.
Sorry If i have made any errors in this thread. I am new here, I just created an account right now so I can find some help to solve my issue.

I did what you guys said, and I reflashed the same ROM and everything is working fine. The only downside, although, is that I have had to re-install all my apps again.
Also, would you guys know what caused the problem? I'd like to know so that I can ensure it doesn't happen again in the future.

Did you had a lot of applications installed and linked along with dalvik to sd-ext?
Then after clearing the cache on reboot the dalvik files will regenerate in the /data partition if there are a lot of apps and the /data overflows then your apps will stop working without the dex files. And clearing the dalvik cache usually doesn't help in increasing speed.........next time you should go into link2sd and use the "clean dalvik cache" option there.........

This actually happens because Link2SD can also link dalvik cache files as well, what the recovery must have deleted would be the symbolic links that the Link2SD script creates, so next time if you want to clear the dalvik cache, use the option found in the Link2sd app
Alright so it seems, instead of using the dalvik cache cleaner on recovery, I should just use the one located in Link2sd. I'll be sure to do that next time to ensure that no problems persist.
Thanks for all the help!
