Newb Question

I want to root my phone to get WiFi tether.
I am confused. What is the best way to root the phone? I see a Zedomax Vid on youtube which links to a "version 1" file.
Can anyone post a link for the best way to root right now?
If I root the phone, is that the same as installing a custom ROM?
I want a custom rom eventually once they have been worked out a bit longer.
Right now, I just want to be rooted for wifi tether.
Thanks in advance and sorry for such basic questions, but I am getting a bit confused I as read through the forums.
My main concern with rooting the ET4g is the flash counter that I have read about here. I had my evo4g rooted so I'm not new to this but I am for the ET4g...Do these pre-rooted kernals replace the stock kernal? Will there eventually be a method to keep the stock kernal and root the phone? Will there be a way to bypass the flash counter built into the rooting process/a custom ROM? I want to have those questions answered before I root my phone b/c I don't want something to go wrong and then I can't get it replaced through sprint. The only reason I would want root is for wifi tethering...custom roms maybe but at this point I see no reason aside from random bugs that I would need a custom rom. Anyways sorry to jack this thread. I figured it was a similar question.
Edit: And maybe this thread should be moved into the questions section

You can flash a rooted kernel, then flash the stock to get back to the stock kernel and still be rooted. Both kernels are available in the developers section of this site. As far as the flash count goes - I'm not sure if there is a way to reset the counter.

Use Zedomax's method - I only say this because he includes the flash utility (ODIN) and a rooted .tar as well as a helpful step by step video.
You do NOT need to install a custom ROM to root - you can use odin to flash just the kernel.

Thanks for the reply. Should i use the method as on youtube with "version 1" link or is there an updated version?

Go HERE and use that version.. it is just the rooted stock kernel with a few tweaks. There are also links in that thread for ODIN (the flash utility) and Samsung Kies (you'll need to install this to obtain the proper drivers for your device) as well as a step by step method.

[Q] Updated ROM?

I feel like an idiot for asking this, so if it's been posted anywhere, please point me to it.
Do we have a rooted ROM available for 2.3.6? I noticed a significant battery life improvement with 2.3.6 over 2.3.5 before I rooted and could really use having that back again. I did some major digging but I can't find 2.3.6 specifically mentioned in any ROM downloads
Thanks!
+1 to this, but, the AT&T version it's out there, I was wondering, anyone knows if there's a 2.3.6 for Rogers ? Not a custom ROM, a Stock ROM.
is there a signed zip i can flash with 3e recovery ?
i cant use odin because the usb not work
so i have no chance to install CWM
but if i wanne flash the custom roms it say verification failed
By the lack of responses, I'm guessing nobody has rooted the update??

[Q] question about kernels

Hey all, I just have a few quick stupid questions after researching and not coming up with the answers............ Sorry if they have been answered before, I did search for ages before resorting to asking stupid questions
Can I flash a custom kernel onto a HTC ONE X with the stock ROM in place, without modifying the stock ROM?
From what I have found the RADIO is a part of the kernel??..... does this mean I need to find one to suit my country(optus AUSTRALIA) or am I able to flash the radio seperate?
Basicly, Im wanting to add the infamous sweep2wake by show-p1984 to my stock operating system
Thanks in advance
Bootloader
locked/unlocked?
Only possible unlocked
Stock rom
Rooted/Unrooted?
Only possible with root
CWM recovery installed yes or no
Only possible with cwm flashed?
but apart from that yes it can be done
Kernel is flashed seperate from the radio so no issues there
Im just now going through the motions of unlocking bootloader and recovery.... do I just go with the newest version of recovery?
(im following the for dummies guide)
By only possible with CWM flashed, do you mean CWM recovery? or it can be only flashed through CWM?
And im not to sure wether the factory ROM is rooted or not yet
NONO i mean clockword recovery installed..
U need to flash the kernel in fastboot....(bootloader mode)
Just keep on reading and follow ALL the steps
U`ll be alright ( and the stock rom is NOT rooted)
legend ! Thanks heaps, yeah definatly reading everything twice before going ahead

Back to Stock

Hey everyone.
Wondering if anyone can shed some light..
I am currently rooted and using CWM for my recovery and AOKP for my ROM...
i found a thread here that has all the STOCK roms and kernals for Samsung S3.
My question is simple really..
When i flash back to the STOCK ROM and STOCK KERNAL.. would i lose my ROOT? and would i also lose Clockwork recovery?
Thanks

If you just use mskip's toolkit from the dev section, you can flash back to a stock rom and if you want/need to, you can also flash root and recovery from his tool as well after flashing back to stock.

Any link to the thread with the stock ROMs? I am no good at searching for this stuff.
I'll post the link when I am at home for the stock ROMs..
These replies kinda confused me lol...
I don't want to use a toolkit..
I just want to flash the .zip ROM and kernel via CWM..if I do that do I loose my root and CWM?
Or do I need this mskip toolkit to accomplish this? Meaning get rid of root and CWM..
Thanks..sorry..just confuses by the responses..

[Q] can i use rooted stock rom to update jb

i have stock rooted backup rom. i cant install jb update. is it becoz of rooted?? if yes how can i unroot?
Good question, i also would like to know this. im in ICS ARHD
Rooted doesn't matter. As long as it's a stock ROM for your CID, all you need to do is flash the stock RECOVERY and kernel and you're good to go.
As far as i know you need to unroot it too, its a system change that will not allow to update ......
But you could try....then we all know it for sure

Actually root doesn't matter in the matter of getting OTAs. Updating through OTA will just remove root, and you can just root it again after that. Same method with ICS

Same like mine. Can not upgrade without unrooting.
you have to Relock, flash the official ICS version then use auto upgrade to JB.
I have tried to root again the official JB using same method for ICS then bricked my phone. now have to use a cooked rom instead bcoz can not downgrade ro stock ICS
