Unrooting HTC EVO - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to unroot my girlfriends HTC EVO. What's the easiest way to do so? All I have done to her phone is unroot it, added super user and wireless tethering. What's the simplest way to unroot it? She's running 2.3.3.

Just run the latest stock ruu, it will unroot you and return to stock rom.

will running the latest stock ruu return the phone to when I bought it? I have not changed the rom. All I did was change turn S off and added wifi tethering. Would turning S on and uninstalling superuser unroot the phone and save all my other settings?

Yes, it will return your phone to stock. Not necessarily from when you bought it, as there have been many updates to the stock rom.

That will not fully unroot you, you would still need to remove the custom recovery you have too. The easiest way is to just run an ruu, it will do everything in one step.

Where can I get the lastest ruu? Will rooting the phone erase/delete anything from the phone?

I'm not sure about Revolutionary since I haven't used it, but with the old Unrevoked you do not lose anything.

Running a stock ruin will not just unroit your phone. You guys have been misinformed. You have to downgrade your hboot 1st, then ruu. Search for "how to indoor revolutionary root????????". That thread has all the info u need.

I searched that but I didn't come up with anything but this thread....Are you sure that is the correct name? Do you have a link?

Google search "How to Unroot my EVO4G"

Google "how to unroot evo 4g" the 5th link down has a how to on the HTCEVOhacks website...the how to is based on the revolutionary root. Hope this helps. I'd post the exact link for you but being a total noob it won't let me

Yes, everything including your contacts will be wiped from the phone.
---------- Post added at 05:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:48 PM ----------
Also, you need to power off your phone. Then hold the power button and the volume down buttons at the same time, and let us know what your bootloader screen reads at the top (does it say Revolutionary?) so that we can direct you to the CORRECT unrooting method.

Contacts and calendar should be backed up to google. Login to your gmail on a computer to double check if all your contacts are there. If not, then you need to change all your contacts on your phone from "phone contacts" to "google contacts".
Apps can only be backed up and restored if you are rooted, using Titanium Backup.
Pics should already be on your sd card and will be untouched with a factory reset.
Texts can be backed up to the card with SMS Backup and Restore.

yeah, I was only worrying about apps and there setting...i am rooted...so I will use titanium backup but will it be able to restore on an unrooted phone?

No

Bricked EVO?

So I installed unrevoked [Followed step by step everything was fine]
Here's where I think I messed up (ROYALLY) I went into recovery and installed the freshEVO ROM from .zip and it installed but was stuck on the HTCEVO 4G screen, I waited like 15+min see if the install was slow, then I rebooted (took out battery) and cleared cache just did everything I think I could do to remove and now my phone is like bleh :[
Help please and thanks.

Thanks, so lemme see if I understand this... the only way to reset my phone is to install what you linked to, and I won't be able to root ever again?
So does ur EVO go to recovery?

You can reroot if you want once you ruu'd your phone. Its entirely up to you.
It also could have just been a bad flash or a bad file

Just use the 3.70 RUU and you can reroot.
Yeah I press volume down and power then I go to recovery and it runs clockwork recovery, and that's about it

Then you can use caulkin's format all and then flash whatever ROM and kernel you want.
I would just run a RUU, 3.70, and then reroot.

On the part where is says to plug it in and power on I tried to run it normal and I also tried to run it VIA the HBOOT USB or whatever its called and it still wouldn't let me proceed

Rename the zip file PC36IMG and put it on the root of your sdcard and then boot into the bootloader and accept the update.
He has root if he has clockwork. Dude just install a rom.

I agree with riley you have clockwork no need to go back to square one. I had the same problem with fresh ROM. Get Sprint lovers its simple to use.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153 and like every thing else put it on the root of you're SD card (or out side of the folders).

[Q] Need help flashing RUU

Hi,
I'd appreciate if someone can help me with flashing RUU.
My screen has become distorted and wanted to send back for repairs under warranty.
I was GB ROM and changed it to stock Froyo ROM for flashing RUU
However when I'm running the program, after it starts detecting it returns with an error:
Unable to connect/detect, ensure that the phone is connected thru USB.. etc etc...
I'd really appreciate a little guidance here.!

Okay, so:
1) Download this file:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.zip
2) Rename it to PB99IMG.zip (make sure it's not PB99IMG.zip.zip, because windows hides known file extensions)
3) Copy it on the root of your sd card (so not in any folder)
4) Boot your phone into hboot (start it with pressed and holded volume down and power button)
5) Enter the request and let the ruu install.

I'd rooted on Stock Froyo and installed Instercoin GB Rom after I'd S-off..
So does the Stock GB restriction applies in my case?

I went to this topic and tried rooting my phone that way, I did everything it instructed but it never verified the files in the zip, it found the file and scanned it and there was a blue loading bar that showed it was doing something but it never asked me if I wanted to flash. I'm running Sprint HTC EVO 4g 2.3.3 unrooted, I've tried unrevoked but unfortunately I only have access to a computer as a Guest account. When I tried it I had loads of files on my SD card, should my SD card be formatted and PC36IMG.zip be the only file? Do I have to extract the files before trying flash? Am I wasting my time and I already have to have root access to make this work? Sorry if these are dumb questions I'm a n00b.:/ plz help

You dont extract the file first. Make sure you download the Unrevoked and follow its instructions. Including when to connect your usb. as for the files on your sdcard you dont need to delete them. I would suggest backing up your pics and such before rooting, and loading any new rom.

You must use the revolutionary root method for 2.3.3 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1228566&highlight=root+gingerbread
The one which you used (Toast's Method Part 1) only works for Android 2.1, and unrevoked will not work past 2.2.

I didn't think about that. That could be the issue then. No nandroid backup of your stock ROM right?
I'm thinking the best you can do is find a similar to stock ROM and install that. Most times the service techs don't look to hard at a device to see that it is running a custom ROM.

You could download this rom and once it's done downloading open the .zip up and delete Superuser.apk from either /system/app or Data/app. Then when you boot up it should look normal enough. After that you could just flash a stock recovery
IMO that's your best option since I haven't seen a ruu yet.
