WFS Storage capacity - HTC Wildfire S

According to the specs, the WFS has 512MB RAM and 512 ROM.
I just installed some 20 small apps and the memory is full.
I see:
125MB Used
25MB Free
======
150MB Total
Where are the 512? It's a brand new phone so no real cache space should be occupied, so the only way to resolve this is to root and start removing bloarware? I don't really want to do this because it's my wife's phone and I want to keep things stock and simple.

That would be the wonders of HTC Sense taking all of your 512mb. The only way to get it all to your use is to S-OFF your device, root, and then install a custom rom, preferably Senseless for the most space.

Or make ext3 partition on your sd and use link2sd which auto-maps apps out of internal memory

Does it require root?

yes, requires superuser permissions. so the device must be rooted. But one thing to be careful with is custom roms. if you have a gsm version of the wildfire s you should be fine, but if you have the cdma version of the phone, beware.... possibility of bricking is high.

So, if under wireless settings/call settings I have options for both GSM/WCDMA, it means that I have the cdma version? I bought it from handtec UK.

It's only CDMA if the model number is A510c. Go to model information in settings.
GSM phones are A510a/A510b/A510e.

It's A510e. So it means it's GSM and I am safe to root?
From a quick search I realize that cdma is only for USA, right? so only US users are not safe to root or maybe I'm wrong?

This is my first time with Android operating system and i'm totally clueless from where to start.
I searched desire forums already but information is too much and i end creating up this thread.
Before root/flash and other things i need to clear up few things before i run into trouble. so please be easy.
1. I want to install Apps on micro-sd but can't find the way to do it.
2. How to find out My HTC desire is Branded or Unbranded. On a side note, When i turn on my Mobile I see Virgin Media Logo.
3. What are the benefits to root my phone.
4. If i root my phone will i lose the HTC sense UI? or i need to flash my phone to a custom based ROM?
5. What is Froyo? is it a new version of Android 2.2?
Last but not the least, can i root my device using Windows 7 64bit?
Thanks in advance.

1. You need A2SD (apps to sd). Only available if you root.
2. Your phone is branded so you need a gold card.
3. You get a choice of custom roms, you get A2SD, and you can use apps that require root access.
4. Nope you can use a rooted stock rom, or better still, a custom rom with sense in it.
5. Froyo is the name for the new Android OS. It's 2.2
And last but not least, yes you can! I used win7 64bit. Use the riskfree root guide on modaco. It's painless and very easy.

Are you sure my Phone is branded? because the box i have is white HTC one? and i don't see any virgin logo on it.
Plus i googled it and it came up with this information.
Go to Settings>About Phone>Software version and see what the FW version is - branded is x.xx.161.x, unbranded is x.xx.405.x
i checked mine and it says 405..so is it still branded?
If you have the virgin logo then I'm 99% sure you are branded and will need a goldcard.

this is getting quite confusing..
i just found this thread on XDA :/..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6227438&postcount=11
I haven't mentioned yet, that i'm in Pakistan and using other Network other than Virgin Media as we don't have that carrier. So basically its a sim free Phone. I mailed HTC regarding this.
any other way out to find about the branded and unbranded phone? other than just the logo ?
If you are going to root it, then try without the goldcard, if you get errors then you will know you need it.
Or simply play safe and make a gold card then root anyway. Being network sim unlocked has nothing to do with the phone being branded. I read that post you linked, and that said it was sim free but the sim caused the branding. if you are not using a virgin sim and have the virgin logo etc, I'd say you may well be branded.
It won't hurt to try either way!

I'd like to know one thing, as i read on few other sites that android 2.2 is due on Monday officially by HTC, so will i be able to flash my rom without any problem or i have to go through the goldcard and root option?
Its delayed for a few months sadly! Hey i just wanted to ask that are you having the time zone prob here in Pak..the phone showing GMT +6 instead of 5? and messing up all the threaded messages?
Im on Ufone btw!
I was wondering, you mentioned its ur first time with Android..why do you want to root it so soon?

yup getting the same +6gmt time..but messages are just fine. btw im using handcent sms/mms client.
i want to root it soon because i'm running out of memory and want to install apps on sd card.
Suppose if i don't root my device and leave it as it is running right now? is it possible to flash my device with the latest HTC froyo? ..
No sadly you cannot flash another rom to the phone without rooting it
Will have to wait for September for the OTA update.
Ive got a branded orange one but still not debranded or rooted it because initially there were problems with wifi not working and stuff like that..But the thing is once the OTA is here and you want to have that, you wont be able to the custom rom...you would have to revert to your original rom and then get it..
Here is the method for rooting it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
But I'd say otherwise. Maybe you should delve a bit deeper into the OS before rooting it because there is a chance to brick your phone if you make a mistake.
The solution that I am using for the low storage is that removing unnecessary app from the phone. For example you have installed google earth on the phone, The apk file would be 5.9mb but once installed it will expand to 13mb and eat up a large chunk of that space.
To check the memory consumed by each app go to:
Settings>Applications>Manage Applications
So this will enable you to have a rough idea of whats draining your memory.
Hope this helps!

That last bit was specific to Vodafone UK, the x.xx.161.x refers to their product code. the x.xx.405.x is the product code of SIM-free devices. If you phone is x.xx.405.x then you have an unbranded phone (for reference, Virgin's product code is x.xx.351.x)

Well thanks. ..such a relief.
than why i have virgin Media logo on it? its a bug? as mentioned by other XDA user.
Guys finally updated the firmware to the latest Generic one without unbranding and creating the Goldcard. everything went smoothly.
But still after update i see the virgin media logo and still im clueless from where does this come after updating to the latest firmware.
so this all clears up that i have the unbranded phone ? right?
In android Market i can't see the Paid apps. Even the Featured Apps page isn't showing. I'm getting No Matching Content in Android Market.
Other than this i can install the free apps without any problem. Anyone facing similar issue?

Frequently Asked Questions

As people are making multiple threads about the same thing again and again, I decided to make one thread for FAQ.
--------------------------------------------------------
Q) Can I root my phone?
A- Yes, only if you have S-OFF
Q) How do I get S-OFF on my phone?
A- Please visit htcdev to start unlocking your phone!
Q) How much internal memory does HTC Wildfire S have?
A- 150 MB.
Q) Is Flash supported on my phone?
A- Answer is both, yes and no. Full Flash is not supported but a few chinese developers have made a "lite" version for ARMv6 devices i.e; Wildfire S
Q) I'm having problem with Sync. It doesn't work!
A- Keep your internal memory more than 15 MB. Only then it'll work.
Q) My battery life is very bad. What to do?
A- You should buy a new battery. Not from HTC but from some other site(s). Try Mugen Power batteries or buy one from eBay if you don't wish to spend $47 on a battery.
--------------------------------------------------------
Did I miss something? Let me know. I'll add/fix it instantly
"You should by a new batter" It should be battery.
Thanks, fixed
The Wildfire S has only 128MB of Internal Memory?
Both HTC and GSMarena state the Wildfire S as having 512MB of ROM. So unless ROM different from internal memory... :/
150MB Internal memory.
Full flash is supported. I have it on my Wildfire S. It's just not available on the market.
Battery saving tips
I currently have Juice Defender and Advance Task Killer running, are these the best app to use to keep battery and performance at a optimal level?

Well you see I too was able to install flash 10.3 but when opened whatismyflash.com flash version that it showed was 10.1(as it was before installing). The flash lite provided by HTC emulates flash 10.1 to some extent.I tried running Farmville but after loading it said "insufficient memory"

As of now, root is not possible for all users. Only those who have used XTC Clip or else got S-OFF device packed.
If you want, I'll dig and find that out
I think is a question that is frequently asked,so would make sense in a faq..about how to flash I've not yet found how to do it properly..(what to back up with titanium backup, wise SD or not..etc)..and I think once you root (as I recently did with the clip of another forum user) the next step is flashing a ROM with larger amount of free memory..I assume the above is common need of all average wildfire s users..we all struggle with low internal memory..
can the wildfire s be overclocked/underclocked ? if yes then what are the max and minimum frequencies ?
im thinking about switching from my ideos to wildfire s .... getting a good deal on it.
Other carriers
If the Wildfire S gets S-OFF, does this mean it can be used on other GSM carriers with the same bands (T-Mobile and AT&T). Or would a new ROM accompanying S-OFF be necessary as well? Or is it carrier locked if not purchased unlocked?
I really did search this Wildfire S forum for att and at&t! No hits, probably just a massive n00b question.
S-OFF unlocks all, just like in a pc your an administrator not a guest account or S-ON.
and yes you can use different networks. if you use an xtc clip.
example you bought unlock code, and it unlocks but some phones, even unlocked with unlock code there is no signal.
so better use xtc clip to be sure.
Flash support on htc wildfire s
i need some more infromation on getting a full flash support how to download and install stuff like that as i've been getting this annoying yellow triangle saying flash not supported soooo any ideas !! ?
thx in advance

Typo? "XClip" should be "XTC Clip"? As in yr post of 3 Sep.
thnks anyway, good information tough.
there is no point to install "task killed kind of" app..android automatically restarts those killed app...instead of that to to settings-applications -manage apps- running services .and you can stop the services manually ..instead of installing talk kiillers..try ES TASK MANAGER...it has a cache cleaner(cleans cache from all the apps simultaneously),task killer(if u don't wanna use above process) and many other useful tools ...
One question, its our battery worse than of the htc desire s, for example? With our screen and our processor, there are no problem, no? I'm thinking about buy mugen battery...

[ROM] Stock 2.3.4, Sense 2.1 [Rooted][Apps2sd][US Cellular] - Only for marvelc A510c

A cursory warning that this rom has A2sd installed; so, one will definately want to format their sd card [and particularly /sd-ext] correctly. I recommend [for this rom] ext2 on /sd-ext not over 1.5 gigs, no swap, whatevers left or you prefer to set for fat32. Also, though written in, you might want to dl and install A2SDGUI from market; link to guide for it and Links2SD found later in thread.
This is a rebuilt nandroid backup from dsixda's Android Kitchen. Be sure to do a nandroid and do NOT flash this on any other model wildfire s [A510c ONLY]. 2.3.4 as is stock to US Cellular, added everything including busybox, A2SD, and su, If any devs would like to pull it apart and meld your kernel in, go for it. Again, make nandroid. Should have full HTC sense 2.1. Download Link2SD from market for some space savings, and don't say I didn't warn you to nandroid [three times].
Also, as with any new rom installation. I recommend doing the following in your recovery: a factory reset [which wipes your data and cache] and advanced clear dalvik cache. If you do those two things, you usually don't have any transference issues; Superwipe is also a good alternative primer for wiping.
Code:
Android OS version : 2.3.4
Device : marvelc
...
Rooted (Superuser.apk + su) : YES
Rooted (unsecured boot.img) : YES
BusyBox installed : YES
BusyBox run-parts support : YES
Apps2SD (Apps to EXT) enabled : YES
/data/app enabled : NO
Custom boot animation allowed : NO
Nano text editor installed : NO
Bash shell support : YES
/system/framework is deodexed : NO
/system/app is deodexed : NO
radio.img found : NO
ROM will wipe all data : NO
--Download Link--
Changelog:
12-13-11 got contribution of
Oldest nandroid PoGoP had (made shortly after root)
built from that.
Known Issues:
Friendstream only has HTC Twitter - no other choices
This is how it came stock; I tried to fix it, but will have to port another sense to get it right.
Thanks
So many I can't remember them all.
eoghan2t7 - for his work developing s-off [w/o xtc clip]
GotsOJ - for being the first to document his s-off experience (was very helpful).
alquez - for his work on the Unoffical CWM Recovery and port of CyanogenMod [which is where I'll be spending some development time next (kernel editing)]
dsixda - of course for his kitchen
jikantaru - lots of sense development for the Euro-side of this phone
simonsimons34 - for making Superwipe marvelc edition, once supplied w/ idea and src links
PoGoP - for contribution of files and being first tester
Works on Virgin Mobile as well
Although this will have US Cellular branding (and apps). So far everything I've tried works on VM USA too. These guys got HTC FM Radio and WiFi hotspot native and not as gunked up. Still need to test some stuff, but so far its nice. This Rom as my other one does not include radio.img; which, is probably why it works.

so does this mean that I could potentially use the other custom roms around here and just not include the radio.img file?
on a side note apart from what I just asked, any way to include data2sd with this rom so that you could use one of the sd card partitions for internal storage?? Similar to how [ROM]Wildfire S -JikantaruROM XE™|Sense2.1|DATA2SD|HighQuality & Performance 10-30-11 uses data2sd.

Probably could. Apps2sd does the same thing for me; Just download a app like Link2sd, let it flash the script [according to the partitioning of your personal sd card], reboot and voila... All apps and dalvik vm can be moved to sdcard.
Most of the other custom roms are written for GSM phones and most marvelc flashers have reported wifi, data, bt, etc not working [major flaws]. You can get calling if you backup your APN info [APN backup & restore - app on market] but no data... you won't keep the rom(s) longer than to test it... no PRL data etc [important for us CDMAers ]. Short answer... not yet. I know of one dev universalizing his rom... but as of this writing, not yet. Only mine and simonsimon's roms work for marvelc as of this writing.
Rob
yea, I'm already using link2sd, but after moving everything possible, or linking everything possible, it still only leaves me with like 20mb of internal storage. with the rom I mentioned earlier, using data2sd, it would basically install the rom directly to the sd card, and use the 2nd partition as the "internal" storage. making the internal storage around 700+mb available.
There's this one gps app that I am dying to try, just to see how good it is myself, but it tells me that theres no room to install the maps This is after the app itself is moved to the sd card, and with about 20mb available. That's part of the reason I would like to have data2sd on this device.
At least that's what I have discovered so far, btw, im still a n00b to android phones. so im not totally up to date on all the diff apps and what they all do, so please correct me if i am at a wrong assumption.

Don't like Google Maps eh? I have a hard time justifying adding (or even trying) an app over 10mb... Google's apk limit I think is 25mb for the market. That being said, I am working on a custom marvelc rom that I will release with option for Apps2sd or data2sd etc. flashable zip mods and release the rom without them. [this would mean your practice would be full wipe, install rom zip, install [your choice of mod] zip, etc. I might even look into this guy that wrote some roms for the G2 ILWT or something like that... he had a lil text script you could modify...[makes it all one command]. Either way, it will be a new thread when I release the custom rom. Won't be immediate either; I'm 40 and move like a turtle. I am shooting for a release before Christmas though. [looking at everything inc. compiling 2.3.5 kernel and seeing if I can get that running on our cdma's, possible sense porting [true 3.0 if it works], etc.]
The best system file size scenario you will see is with an AOSP rom [like CyanogenMod]. A couple devs are working on those type roms for the marvelc (simon[2] and alquez). I'll assist where I can, but stay out of their way. Alas, I catch myself rambling yet again.
Looked over Data2sd... It basically uses your sd card as your data partition, but most prefer DarkTremor's A2sd still. Just hard to get rolling sometimes. I did post a mini-guide on it over on the VM USA stock rom thread here.
i know this device is sort of "old hat" i have a question, the rom from this OP works well on uscc wildfire s (cdma) one thing i dont understand is how come the rom reflects "virgin mobile" carrier brand on lockscreen, and notification pull down, also in settings/network/operator name...
will someone please explain this to me.
i do not see much uscc support for this device, rightfully so. i have yet to flash a rom for a510c that reflects the uscc official "get your phone back to stock roms" am i missing something?
Well there was a uscc dev early in the game, but to answer your question, the rom probably touched my phone. I know you guys have had an update.. as has vm usa and metro. Unfortunately, going back and updating.. their could be a possibility of ten different hboots (for the three carriers, that I know of [original, htc unlock, update1, [update2-only metropcs]]). Also, the newest ones aren't as easily hackable. For uscc there would be three possible hboots, and these provide a base. If you would like to get back to stock entirely, use football's RUU. I paid for and he agreed to release these for all marvelc carriers. Otherwise, I could do something now without it touching my phone Early on, had no RUU and little way to test otherwise.
Rob
PS Thank you for letting me know. And your post counts toward interest. So far, the guy [Pogop] who shared his nandroid has pm'd me.. but I guaged interest as low; and thus match my priority for uscc specific development. But you've raised it from a 1 to a 2 If it gets to 10 it gets done right then.. but I got a list of tasks. Sadly those under 5, I have not been able to make time for despite my best efforts. If any other uscc users would like Team Blueridge attention, now would be the time to chime in with a +1

safe to install OTA System Updates?
Hello,
This question refers to this ROM which I installed a week ago...
I have flashed this great, stable Stock Rom to work with my Marvelc Wildfire s, which took me forver to find and I'm very happy with. However, I have now got a notification stuck on the bar telling me there is a System Update available. My first question is; IS IT SAFE TO INSTALL THE OTA UPDATE OVER MY CURRENT ROOTED ROM? If so, is there anything I should know prior to doing that?
My second related question is; If it is not safe to install the update, or uneccessary, unimportant or just a plain nuisance, how do I get rid of the notification that will not clear and prevent them from appearing in the future?
Thanks in advance for your help!
I don't think you can update it, you don't have the original HTC recovery that came on your phone anymore...if you don't want that message to pop up go to settings-->about phone--> and somewhere in there there's an option to turn the update checker off. sorry I don't know the exact menus I've been using cyanogen since august.

I don't think you can update it, you don't have the original HTC recovery that came on your phone anymore...if you don't want that message to pop up go to settings-->about phone--> and somewhere in there there's an option to turn the update checker off. sorry I don't know the exact menus I've been using cyanogen since august.

I know this is prob a pita.. But there is an old VM USA thread that answers disabling the updater. Should be same or similar for uscc rom. If you have trouble finding it, I'll look up and link post (in thread)

demi_friend... I do NOT have that option...
insink71... If you could find that link regarding disabling the updater I would be very grateful, it's the only downside to this ROM I have...

That link did the job great! You know I tried searching for that yesterday using keywords "ota, notices and updates" but never got that result... strange that....
Anyway, thanks Rob, I did what was instructed with no issues, hopefully it prevents those stinky updates. I don't know why I would want to update anything while I have everything just how I like it.
You may want to add "Working with the US Cellular A6230" to your description as I know many folk are looking for a 'working' rom...
Cheers!
no more USC logo on boot...
Hey... I fiddled a bit more with this and got a few apps loaded and working great... still no problems with this ROM...
Fixed OTA Updates as per insink17's instructions...
Have excellent, phone,data,gps,sms,mms etc...
removed or froze much of the remaining sytem apps that were chewing up battery/ram...
added some nice live wallpapers...
and best of all, got rid of the US Cellular bootanimationimage and can now add any boot animation I like! (Have a smart little glowing Droid on startup at present... cool!)
Thumbs Up!

[Q] new to rooting my widlfire s

Hi their im matt
What it is, i bought an HTC Wildfire S the other day from phones4u, now im really happy with it but i dont use half the apps that are pre-installed, now i found i couldnt remove them until i read about rooting my device or something.
Now just wondered if anybody can help me, i have read some tutorials but they ask me to hold volume down + power, but nothing happens at all and i also cannot install any drivers for some reason, when i plug my mobile into my pc it says cannot find drivers and when i download some modified drivers, and use the driver search tools it still says cannot be found.
Can anybody help me out, i really want to get rid of some of these apps especially stocks.
"I have watched the XDA "Noob Video" and agree to abide by the xda-developers rules." - remember that, hum ?

its says im s-on
hi their yes iv just checked and it says im s-on,
what do i need to do now
Look up xtc clip

easiest way to get some extra space without buying xtc clip (until someone finds a way to s-off by software) is to install the stock 2.3.5 ROM. There is a tutorial somewhere for "S-ON GSM UPGRADE TO 2.3.5" somewhere on this forum. Before I did that I had only around 20mb free, now i have around 50mb even with everything updated and lots of other apps installed that i actually use.
::EDIT::
here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363693
follow that, don't forget to backup your phone first, there are apps on the market to backup contacts etc.
as far as rooting goes, we can so far only get a temp root which is gone after reboot, and this won't let us touch system files/folders, so no flashing custom roms/deleting system software, so like i said, best option at the moment is to update to 2.3.5 using this tutorial.
already on 2.3.5
my software is already on 2.3.5

how much free space do you have then? is your phone branded? (e.g.mine had loads of t-mobie apps on it, which are now gone completely).
you could try upgrading with the files in that link still if you're branded/not got alot of space, not sure how it will play out if you're already on 2.3.5 tho :s
::EDIT::
you can also perform this trick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218923
which will allow some more apps to be installed to the sd card rather than internal storage (although, i only saved a very small ammount based on the apps i had installed, but others have apparently saved quite a bit of space)

Theres no extra space. Your apps ( if they are the same as they were in 2.3.3 and in same quanity) will fill your "extra" space with app data in course of time, and you will have same ammount of memory as on 2.3.3

Since you're new to this I suppose it might be important to know that branding means your phone is personalized by your carrier.
In your case it's O2. Does your phone have the O2 logo and also O2 specific software that you want to get rid of?
If that's the case you should flash the generic European 2.3.5 RUU and you will have more internal storage available. Your phone will be free of the customizations and unneeded apps. This is called unbranding.
After flashing the "clean" RUU immediately use the trick above (the one that allows apps to be installed on the SD Card). It helped me a lot.
I have a considerable amount of apps installed but still have 79MB free internal storage (from 150MB total). With the original Vodafone ROM that came with my phone I wouldn't have more than 30MB free now.
You already have links for the tutorials so it should be easy to "clean up" your phone. Always keep in mind that flashing a RUU will wipe your phone's memory.
If you have important stuff make a backup first. If you use your Gmail account for syncing contacts, gmail and calendar then a big part of the work should already be done (as long as you have auto-sync activated).
As soon as you reenter your Google username and password on the new ROM, all that info will reappear without great effort.
Good luck!

If his phone is branded there is certainly some internal storage occupied with unnecessary apps from the carrier/provider.
As I already said, when I switched from a Vodafone branded ROM to the European RUU I gained approximately 30MB. Isn't that extra space?
Each case will probably have different results.
I used the "adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2" and it helped some apps to go to my SD Card instead of being forced to "live" in the phone memory (internal storage).
Of course that app data will also occupy the internal storage as time goes by. That's why sometimes I cleanup some apps like Facebook and Gmail, forcing them to start from scratch. It also helps to use an app like History Eraser, in order to clean the cache and histories of some applications.
A smartphone just like a personal computer requires some maintenance in order to keep up the highest performance levels.
I rooted mine and took off all the crappy virgin mobile apps

Question about Flashing Roms

I have an htc one m8 from tmobile. I'm well versed in flashing roms, have a nexus 6p where I'm running purenexus. This was just laying around so i thought I'd go for it. I have the bootloader unlocked through HTCdev and i have twrp 3.0.2-0 on it. My question has to do with flashing roms to a tmobile variant. I looked in the tmobile android development thread and there wasn't much there, but in the general android development, there was. If the ROM is in the general android development, will they work on my tmobile variant? Also, if I have to choose a version, since it's a tmobile variant, I'm assuming, maybe incorrectly, that any international rom should work. The other options are usually verizon and sprint, and i think those both use CDMA. If international means GSM, it should work, right?

And then my last question is this. I have never flashed a ROM on a device with an external SD card. When I download the ROM do I need to put on the external SD card or can I just keep it in the download folder in my internal memory? Then when I do a full wipe that erase my download contents as well.
