As people are making multiple threads about the same thing again and again, I decided to make one thread for FAQ.
--------------------------------------------------------
Q) Can I root my phone?
A- Yes, only if you have S-OFF
Q) How do I get S-OFF on my phone?
A- Please visit htcdev to start unlocking your phone!
Q) How much internal memory does HTC Wildfire S have?
A- 150 MB.
Q) Is Flash supported on my phone?
A- Answer is both, yes and no. Full Flash is not supported but a few chinese developers have made a "lite" version for ARMv6 devices i.e; Wildfire S
Q) I'm having problem with Sync. It doesn't work!
A- Keep your internal memory more than 15 MB. Only then it'll work.
Q) My battery life is very bad. What to do?
A- You should buy a new battery. Not from HTC but from some other site(s). Try Mugen Power batteries or buy one from eBay if you don't wish to spend $47 on a battery.
--------------------------------------------------------
Did I miss something? Let me know. I'll add/fix it instantly
"You should by a new batter" It should be battery.
Thanks, fixed
The Wildfire S has only 128MB of Internal Memory?
Both HTC and GSMarena state the Wildfire S as having 512MB of ROM. So unless ROM different from internal memory... :/
150MB Internal memory.
Full flash is supported. I have it on my Wildfire S. It's just not available on the market.
Battery saving tips
I currently have Juice Defender and Advance Task Killer running, are these the best app to use to keep battery and performance at a optimal level?

Well you see I too was able to install flash 10.3 but when opened whatismyflash.com flash version that it showed was 10.1(as it was before installing). The flash lite provided by HTC emulates flash 10.1 to some extent.I tried running Farmville but after loading it said "insufficient memory"

Yes. I'm not sure about Advance Task Killer as I read on Lifehacker that task killers are bad for a phone. Google it

As of now, root is not possible for all users. Only those who have used XTC Clip or else got S-OFF device packed.
If you want, I'll dig and find that out
I think is a question that is frequently asked,so would make sense in a faq..about how to flash I've not yet found how to do it properly..(what to back up with titanium backup, wise SD or not..etc)..and I think once you root (as I recently did with the clip of another forum user) the next step is flashing a ROM with larger amount of free memory..I assume the above is common need of all average wildfire s users..we all struggle with low internal memory..
can the wildfire s be overclocked/underclocked ? if yes then what are the max and minimum frequencies ?
im thinking about switching from my ideos to wildfire s .... getting a good deal on it.
Other carriers
If the Wildfire S gets S-OFF, does this mean it can be used on other GSM carriers with the same bands (T-Mobile and AT&T). Or would a new ROM accompanying S-OFF be necessary as well? Or is it carrier locked if not purchased unlocked?
I really did search this Wildfire S forum for att and at&t! No hits, probably just a massive n00b question.
S-OFF unlocks all, just like in a pc your an administrator not a guest account or S-ON.
and yes you can use different networks. if you use an xtc clip.
example you bought unlock code, and it unlocks but some phones, even unlocked with unlock code there is no signal.
so better use xtc clip to be sure.
Flash support on htc wildfire s
i need some more infromation on getting a full flash support how to download and install stuff like that as i've been getting this annoying yellow triangle saying flash not supported soooo any ideas !! ?
thx in advance

Typo? "XClip" should be "XTC Clip"? As in yr post of 3 Sep.
thnks anyway, good information tough.
there is no point to install "task killed kind of" app..android automatically restarts those killed app...instead of that to to settings-applications -manage apps- running services .and you can stop the services manually ..instead of installing talk kiillers..try ES TASK MANAGER...it has a cache cleaner(cleans cache from all the apps simultaneously),task killer(if u don't wanna use above process) and many other useful tools ...
One question, its our battery worse than of the htc desire s, for example? With our screen and our processor, there are no problem, no? I'm thinking about buy mugen battery...

So I don't want to take an expensive phone with me travelling, and seeing as you can get this phone for really cheap (on a contract) I thought it be better than nothing. I am coming from a HD2 though (broken) and am slightly concerned about the performance. I have read good things, but I would feel safer if I knew that this might get rooted, be overclockable, new customs roms etc.
So if any dev's that plan to root the wildfire s and build custom rooms please let us know!
There are guys working on the Desire S and Incredible S.....
Once they get those rooted / S-Off etc etc I would imagine that the Wildfire will follow.......
Dont quote me on that though
given that the wildfire was very popular and officially supported by cyanogenmod, i believe the wildfire S will follow the footsteps of its predecessor.
Just be patient and wait for a few months. This phone is still in the process of being rolled out in various parts of the world. Once enough people get hold of this phone, i'm sure there will be a few hackers/developers among them who will try to work on rooting and developing custom roms/kernels for it.
Wildfire S Root
I sure hope that a root for the Wildfire S comes in the following months. I wanna get some over-clocking action my my Wildfire!
I am also waiting to root.
But in my case I am very interested because I need rSAP on it to connect to my car.

I think HTC should do what they done with the Nexus One and what Samsung done with the Nexus S and provide the choice for users to unlock the bootloader through fastboot. Motorola and Sony Ericsson are doing it with the Xoom, Arc etc.
Also: I can't wait for custom roms and such to arrive to the S.

not possible at the moment, need to wait for HTC to release unlock (if any), because they are not locking bootloader anymore, but nobody knows if it will affect released devices also (like wildifre s)
They not lock starts from this moment... You should ask devs from other rooted devices from htc... Dont belive root comes himself...
EDIT: I take wildfire from my friend and take a look on this...

hi, today played a little bit with the phone from my wife

Does anything give a temp root?
temp root, unfortunately not
Thats a shame. Guess we gotta wait and see if HTC will unlock the wildfire S :\
Hi there just wanting to ask a quick question is the firmware on a wildfire s the same as the wildfire A3335 which is the Australian model thanks. As i am thinking of debranding it. I have already got it unlocked so that shouldn't be a problem.
Same phone, so same model.

Hi!!
Yes, you might have temporal root privileges.
You have to use GingerBreak through ADB Shell.
Remember this doesn't allow you to install a Custom Recovery or a Custom Rom as the phone will not actually write nothing, so better don't try.
You may use any ROOT-Application like Titanium Backup till you reboot your device.
I don't know if this method works on all WildFire S.
Remember if you just want to debrand your mobile you may use a GoldCard to flash a Unbraded Stock ROM and get ride of all of that stupid branded screens and applications once and for all (as i did in mine)
Good Luck!!
In China it seems you can buy S-OFF Wildfire S, I guess they do this with XTC-clip and then sell them (still doing some more research). Thinking of buying one for my wife.
Does anybody have a link for nice background info how to make a rooted ROM?
I am experienced in baking my own rooted ROMs for Legend with the kitchen, but I have always had a rooted ROM (like BlaY0 0.8.4 or CM 7.0.3) as a starting point.
Now I guess my best bet is to take a normal RUU image for Wildfire S and to put su etc. on it, but what else would I need?
Is it feasible to, say, mix kernel+drivers etc. from the original ROM with less harware specific parts from BlaY0 or CM and in such a way construct a new ROM?
I read somewhere that from a hardware point of view Legend is closest to Wildfire S? Could somebody confirm this?
TIA!
Hello,
Is it possible to "lock" the bootloader?
Example; You have an app like Prey on your phone, you don't want that to be deleted when your phone is stolen. So in the bootloader/recovery you set a password so others can't just flash any rom they want. In this way the person who has stolen/found your device he/she can't do anything with it, since when it is powered on you know where it is and when it's off he/she can't do anything with it

Not really, but this is interesting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1167089
I tried to port it to latest cwm, but when I got into the encrypt menu, it kicked me out to the main menu again.
Dev is working on a device independant port though so may aswell just wait for that.
It encrypts the data partition so they wont get to your data or remove your apps without a password. I guess they can still wipe data though as its only the loop file in data thats encrypted.
But maybe the password protection can be added to other menus to in recovery.
Although how you'd stop them flashing an alternative recovery is beyond me.

That's pretty nice, maybe it will be implemented in some custom recoverys
You can stop flashing custom recovery by locking the bootloader, but that will be very hard to do, i think. I was just curious if it was possible

I would not call such a Dev paranoid but something like "serious", "responsible", "trustworthy", "well-respected" or simply "grown up".
I really HATE that Android is only for kids and nerds. For these kind of people the most important thing is another instable custom rom that makes them flash happy, a new theme with pink live bubbles or a crack for Adult Angry Birds.
It's a shame that you cannot safely store data on your phone.
S-on + no_root + disable usb debug + put a password = ur data safe
If someone stolen ur phone, he can only format it, but ur data is safe
(note that all that security things are included in the stock rom, if you want ur data be safe then why did you root? With root every app potentially can stolen every data from ur phone)

if you have the Galaxy S then why are you complaining about having S-OFF on the HTC Desire forum?
HTC Desire ≠ Samsung Galaxy S
To all those rednecks who like to f*ck around and be retarded: no need to further discuss.
Obviously, I did not come here to complain about HTC (or buy a DRM-infested iphone). By contrast, I used the search and found this and many similar topics. Usually people say that there is no solution and you have to live with the insecurity.
This is the only topic where people say their phone is secure.
With respect to the Galaxy S...it's very easy to crack it. Just enter into download mode and flash a CWM custom kernel with ODIN. The bootloader is not password protected so there is nothing you can do about it. If you have installed CWM...it's even easier because there is also no password protection. It seems that HTC phones may be more secure (as I said the Galaxy S does not have S-on AFAIK). I am merely surprised that this HTC feature was never mentioned in reviews etc. I would have bought an HTC phone if it is really true that they cannot be easily cracked.
the Security flag (S-ON) is merely there to make life hard for anyone who wants to do anything with android development on the phone, not to protect you.
Leaving the phone S-OFF is a marketing strategy, picture it this way - you like android, you're interested in android development, there are a lot more different ROMs for your phone because it's factory S-OFF, and there are no hiccups when it comes to android development and that phone, then in contrast you have a locked-down phone which tries it's damned hardest to keep you out, making life hard for devs, therefore less stuff available for you. Which one do you buy?
Ok I am sure this has been posted here many times. The OS for the wildfire s is one big piece of crap to say the least. I want to install a custom OS that will allow me to put apps and games on the sd card instead of the internal memory. I would just like to be in full control of the OS of which I am not now. What is the simplest and best way to achieve this. I have read several things but not exactly sure what to do. I would like to know what the best software to use that also has a good tutorial for it as well. My wife has had this htc wildfire for just over a month and the internal storage full has been on for weeks. This must be one of the most poorly designed phones I have ever seen. It has all kinds of crap on the phone that my wife will never use. I was also curious as to what software would be could to view the internal memory of the phone with my pc, or can you even do this with the standard OS installed on the phone. I would greatly appreciate any helpful input concerning my questions and thank you kindly.

Hey all, I am posting here regarding applying apps2sd or S2E etc on my sisters phone.
I have never delt with an HTC device, as I have always used Samsung, so I have never dealt with s-on/s-off and unlocking bootloaders, although I have a full understanding of what they are and what they do.
Anyway, my sister always says how she has almost no storage space on her phone. Even using native apps to sd, she can only install about 3 apps. I have to agree, that's not good. She knows I do basic development for android, and wants me to help. *challenge accepted* .
I know that if you have S-On and an unlocked bootloader, all your changes that are made are reset on reboot, and right now the wildfire doesn't have s-off. This could work, as my sister always has her phone charged, and the darn thing lasts for 3 days on a charge (jealous). So that is definately a temporary option.
So could someone give me some advice on a way to do this, and tell me if you guys have a bootloader unlock other than HTC-Dev?
You can only unlock it at htcdev.com or if you (or the phone) is from EU you can try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432474
And since you root the phone, I'd replace the stock rom with something better (there are faster, less battery consuming roms out there).

you may purchase an s off credit here: http://htc.s26tech.com/
this method uses an official htc java card to turn off the phones security data. the card exists as a legitimate tool for cell phone shops and re-sellers,primarily for the purpose of removing the phones simlock.
since this method of s off is somewhat unusual, this thread is intended to help support folks that are unsure of the differences and similarities.
first and foremost, these are my words, sonic has not helped with these posts, tho i hope he will let me know if theres anything he wants changed. if any info you see here and use melts your phone into a little pile of aluminum goo,its not sonics fault, nor is it mine. use this info at your own risk.
in this first post,i thot a few FAQs needed to be put in one place,as they are being asked over and over again in the thread.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: what is s off?what does it do for me?
A: in a nutshell,s-off=security off. it removes all security checks and allows access to all partitions of the phone this means you can:
-change hboot
-change splash inage
-change radios
-flash unsigned files
-go backwards in firmware versions
-other things that maybe ill add later
Q: is this legit??
A:yes,it is. as mentioned above, the java card is a legitimate tool used by some large cell phone repair shops and re-sellers.
Q: how does this work?
A:the java card is plugged into a USB On The Go cable, and plugged into the phone. the java card contains htc-signed diagnostic files wich are used to clear security data. when the phone is booted to hboot with the java card plugged in,it finds the diagnostic file and jumps to a mode where the user can clear "s58" data. this removes any simlock, changes the CID to a generic "supercid",and most importantly, turns off the phones radio secure flag. hooray!
this not sonic, nor is this an htc one. it is a one X using the same method,it will give you a good idea what the process looks like:
HTC One X S-OFF
Q: what exactly is a java card?
A: simply,a java card is an sd card with a microprocessor in it. if someone wishes to provide a more detailed definition,id be happy to put it here. a bit more info here
Q: can we clone the java card so everyone can have s off?
A: yes. but its complicated, and the card to begin with is expensive. there have been some technical discussions about this in sonic's original thread. the simple answer is that it is not easy,or practical to clone the java card.
Q: why do i have to pay for this?? shouldnt s off be free?
A: if you have a prollem paying for this service, you are welcome to purchase your own java card and offer the service for free. as has been stated, the java card is expensive- upwards of $1000 depending how may credits are included.
further, even if a software exploit was available,it is good custom to donate to the devs who brought you the tool. remember,no one here owes you custom roms,s-off,etc. support your devs and what they bring you. in this case, sonic has purchased an expensive htc tool, shipping supplies, and has to invest a great deal of time getting your phone s-offed,packed up,and hauled back to the post office. not to mention the website he has set up for the service. there is nothing wrong with making his $$ back, and a bit extra for his time and efforts.
Q: is the card good forever?
A: NO! the java card has a limited number of uses. he has stated he can sell about 250 s off services, and do 10 developer phones for free. after those credist are gone, you are SOL unless a new exploit is found,or there is enuff interest for sonic to buy a second card.
Q: how do i know how many credits are left?
A:Sonic's website shows the number of avaiable spots left, right above the quantity select/add to cart,in the "product description". simply go to the website, then click the htc one picture.
Q: how do i use this service?
A:go to his website and purchase an s off service. http://htc.s26tech.com/
Q: where do i send my phone?
A: his address is on his website: http://htc.s26tech.com/about/
Q: if im allready unlocked, should i still get s off?
A: in my opinion, yes. s off is better. it allows more options to recover soft-bricked devices, and allows access to all partitions. an s on phone is still doing plenty of security checks. it also allows a permantly installed recovery to install the boot image. the downside is that your phone WILL let you brick it if your not careful. know what your flashing and why. double check md5 sums to verify the integrity of your downloads. a corrupt bootloader ot radio can damage your phone, potentially unrecoverably. if you just asked "what is an md5sum?" stop and google it now. there are numerous md5summers avaialable for free on the vast interweb, download one and start using it.
Q: if im allready unlocked and running a custom rom and recovery,do i need to take any precautions?
A: yes. the diag file is designed to work on stock software and firmware. i would strongly recomend to:
-restore a bone stock nandroid,or flash a bone stock rom
-reflash your stock recovery
-reflash your stock boot image if you were running a custom kernel
-select 'factory reset' option from hboot
Q: will this wipe my phone?
A: yes it will. so back up your sd card to the pc,and be prepaired to have to re-set everything up when you get it back.
Q: does my phone need to be active?
A: no it does not.
Q: do you need my sim card?
A: no he does not.
Q: what is the turn around time?
A: again, these are my words. from the thread,5-7 days. please remember sonic has real life activities to attend to,so you may want to wait until the initial wave has subsided. if he has alot of phones to do,it may take him longer.
Q: im a tight ass,can i use cheaper shipping?
A: yes,you can. the initial shipping is picked and paid for by you. be as tight as you want. the return shipping is priority mail with $600 worth of isurance. if you have such faith in the united states post office, and humanity that you do not feel this is needed, then you can chose the cheaper return shipping option sonic has provided.
Q: how do i activate a spare phone while mine is away?
A:it depends on the phone. if you have another 4g vzw phone, you can simply swap over your active sim. if the sim is larger in the spare phone, adapters do exist for extremely cheap on ebay and amazon. alternately, you can call vzw or go to their website to activate an older 3g device.
Q: how do i activate my phone when it comes back?
A: like you normally would. s off by itself does not change anything about the phone or how it oporates. its what you do afterward/modify that can have an impact on "normal" operation. so if you moved your sim into another phone, just move it back. if you mailed your phone directly to sonic with the protective film still on it,then take everything out of the box and activate just like you would if it had just come from vzw.
Q: will i be able to unlock the bootloader if my phone is s off?
A: yes. when the phone comes back,it will have "supercid". this ignores the mid(model id) check that htcdev does on the phone, and will let you get a token and unlock.
Q: are there advantages to unlocking the bootloader?
A: you have a couple extra fastboot commands you can use:
fastboot flash partition imagename.img
and
fastboot boot imagename.img
these commands are useful to install recovery, and boot images into phone memory. with fastboot bootfor example, you can temporarily launch recovery on the phone to flash su if you dont want to permantly install it.
Q: so do i NEED to unlock the bootloader to install recovery?
A: no,you do not. you can install recoveries and all other partitions as zip files. more info on that later.
Q: does superCID give you any benefits?
A: on a gsm device where you have multiple carrier and regional firmwares that will work, supercid is of value. with a device on vzw,you can only use vzw ruus anyway since this is a unique cdma/lte device. further, accepting an OTA with supercid could leave you unrecoverably bricked, plus it may interfer some some verizon functions(i remember inc 4g users having issue, but the details escape me)
IMO,you should change your CID back to stock afterward. if you do not know your stock CID,you should check it prior to sending off your device. you can find it with fastboot getvar all or fastboot getvar cid. if you wish to "debrand" your phone, you can always change it to a somewhat universal HTC__001 (2 underscores)
Q: is my cid unique to my particulare phone?
A: no,it is not. it is unique to a carrier or region.
Q: how do i change my cid back to stock?
A: with this fastboot command:
fastboot oem writecid xxxxxxxx (where xxxxxxxx is your stock cid)
Q: why is my cid always present on the hboot screen?
A: i dont know htc's logic, but this is simply what the phone does while its s off. it will display whatever your cid is,and is not dependent of your bootloader being locked or unlocked.
Q: what about the TAMPERED and unlocked/relocked badges?
A: if your phone was unlocked when you sent it in, youll get it back factory fresh locked. the tampered badge,i am unsure of at this time, and will update as more info is obtained.
if you sent in a brand new phone,it obviously wont be different(with exception of s off)
one of the big advantages of s off,is that the tampered flag is not triggered by adding a custom recovery or kernel, and since s off removes the various write protections that exist,it is posible to reset either flag. more info on the lock status flag here
Q: will an OTA change my s-off or lock status?
A: it is possible. altho,it is highly unlikely since turning the radio secure flags on via an OTA would also do so on legitimate test phones.
however...
it really is not reccomended that you try and take an OTA while rooted. a custom recovery is unable to install HTC's OTA pacakage, and attempting to do so ca jam you up horribly. taking an OTA with bloat and system files remove will typicaly result in failure, and taking an OTA with supercid could lead to a processor "do not boot" mode, wich is very effectively a hard brick only recoverable via jtag. or a new device.
the best way to update a rooted device is to update the rom with a recovery-flashable zip file, and the firmware extracted from the OTA package. this will update you just like taking the OTA. there is nothing magical about over the air updates. please, just do it manually. leave the OTAs for the stock crowd.
last and not least!
Q: im convinced! what do i do once i get back my stock,s-off phone?
A: please see post 2

Yes but if the devs found a way to share java card over internet mybe will be more ease. You Pay on the guy with the java gard and you use one time the java over internet from home. This will be really good solution if they found a way to do that
I can donate but waiting so many weeks... And probably HOX can be lost during so long way...
