Hey All,
I have been around the forums for a couple months now and flashed multiple different ROM's but never posted anything so this is my first post
I have used multiple different roms Cyanogen, MikFroyo, Calkulin's ect.
I am now running the Unleashed Ultra Black R3. I know Calkulin's ROM has the 3G hotspot feature (not wireless tether) and so does my current Unleased Black ROM. When I go to wireless/networks and check the box for hotspot it does turn on and run (I know by experience the default password and 2 computers connect default) but when I go to hotspot settings, I get a force close error and it takes me back to my homescreen (process com.android.settings) "has stopped".
Any ideas?
The hotspot feature does work and I can connect I just cant change any of the settings (i.e. name of hotspot, amount of users or passowrd).
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again, these forums are great!
-Matt
Wish I could help a fellow Mustanger out, but I've never used the Hotspot app. I've run wireless tether since day 1. Why don't you want to go the wireless tether route? Mostly curious, really.
Hey rugedraw, thanks for the quick response!
I have the wireless tether app but from my understanding, you can only connect one computer to it. With the Hotspot feature, you can connect up to 8

No, sir. I've run my PS3 and two laptops off of my 4G tethering with no issues. I'm not sure how many things you can tether off of wireless tether simultaneously, but I promise you you can do at least 3. lol

Thanks, man. Yea, I figured your car wasn't stock from your user name. lol This is my 9th Stang and won't be my last. I actually went to look at a '70 coupe last month, but it was way too incomplete and I passed on it.
Anyway, glad I could help.

lol...I know what you mean. I've had 8 fox bodies and now this S197. I have a 347 stroker motor complete and I'm just looking for a car to drop it in. I've never had a classic in my stable, which is why I want to go that route now.

Nice, I love the fox bodies too..my brother had an 89' built 302. Im surprised you are looking to go the classic route with a built 347 the way gas prices are now
I have to run 93* in mine and its killing me.... but I wouldnt have it any other way
Look into the classics, they are easy to work on and draw much more attention than newer models.
You can pick up 60's-70's cheap because everyone wants to save money on gas right now. Check out some of the ones for sale on ebay.
What can it do? I was going to activate it on Sprint, but its way too expensive. I decided to just get an HTC Maple on the SERO plan.
So what can this do? I have it controlling my music on the PC already, but I don't know what else I can do with it. So far I keep either this or my iPhone4 in my pocket for use as a:
Music player
Flashlight
Music switcher
Camera
Web Browser
Game player (rather Doodle Jump player)
Clock
What else should I make it do?
Isn't the maple a Windows mobile device? Geeze...
How about a paperweight?
What else would you need it do...? Short of controlling your car and printing money.
if you got a maple, why are you posting here? do you just have an unactivated evo?
The Maple is indeed WM. I hated the phone until I got my Droid stolen and was pleased by the battery life that it had, and I realized it I didn't hate it at all, I did prefer the older stupid-smartphone for various reasons, it works better as a phone to me anyways and I always preferred the keyboard to a touchscreen. I do have an unactivated Evo that I don't think I'll use for cellular service and I'd like to make the best of it. I realize that its like castrating the phone, but I really don't know what else to do with it. Is there a way to forward texts to it and reply from my Evo?
You could just give it to me and I'd make really good use of it.
I can't give it away, I already spent like 100 bucks on it fixing and stuff.
why did you buy this instead of the new itouch? why are you in the Evo forums without a real service providing Evo?
This is dumb
Because it was on sale? I bought it and an iPhone since they were bundled. Why are you so mad? Ignore me if you don't have anything useful to say.
The GPS should work. It's an expensive alternative to a TomTom, but you already have it.

Haha, I think I would have to convert a lot of videos!
Download CoPilot via WiFi and you can use that offline, just download the maps on to a SD card and you're golden!
I use CoPilot all the time during road trips and is awesome!
Also, not sure what area you're in but if you're in an area that has MetroPCS you can activate the EVO on their service. I know in Jacksonville, Florida they had this thing where they would charge you 10 dollars for flashing your phone over to MetroPCS as long as it had a clean ESN.
Man, I'm confused. Are you planning on using it for some of the things it's intended to do? Or are you planning on using a crappy WinMo phone?
i saw a video review and the guy mentioned bluetooth tethering is an option and i am HYPED on that, it's the thing i miss most from old school windows mobile. can anyone with a galaxy nexus and an apple computer confirm whether or not tethering over bluetooth is possible on an apple? thanks so much, and please know i'm insanely jealous of you over here in the states until they get here! lol
bump.
eric b
You can bluetooth tether. Its just very finicky in my experiences (you could bluetooth tether with apps on 2.3). You have to make a bluetooth DUN network profile, pair the devices, and set it up. Similar to what you have to do in order to USB tether.
It ended up being so much trouble that I just wifi tethered. Its faster anyways (setup and network speeds).
Any specific reason you'd prefer bluetooth tether?
thanks for replying!
yeah, it always seemed to be much easier on the battery when i used it on windows mobile. the bottleneck of bluetooth never bothered me too much when i tethered before. i never got usb tethering to work on my apple notebook before, is it possible using the native tethering method or do i need something like pdanet?

Count yourself lucky you haven't got it yet. It seems Samsung, Google and the networks have decided to use the UK early adopters as guinea-pigs.

It will work with the built-in USB tethering option. All of the hackery needs to happen on the computer side. It takes some interesting steps and a lot of setup to get it to work. There are lots of guides online though.
I am typing this on a laptop that I am getting ready to sell because I really do not use it much any more since I have bought my E4GT. These phones have come a long way since I last tried to do this on an HTC Thunderbolt. And with Sprint's unlimited data I found it was just as expensive to have an non data phone and a cable internet connection.
Just wondering how many of you out there are using your Epic 4G touch as your only computer and how you have it tweaked.
I have:
A 32GB SD Card
Installed Unnamed ROM
A six foot USB to Micro cable so I can more easily plug it in while I am at coffee shops.
A Karpus clamp stand
A Casemate case
Planning to get:
Full size USB adaptor
HDMI out adpator
Your nuts. Your going to regret it

There's no way I could use the E4GT like that. Yes, it has come a long way but to replace a laptop? Not for me at least. I also have the 32GB sd card and an MHL adapter. I could see it replacing a tablet but that's about it. At the same time I'm a college student so of course I have different look at it.
Hahahaha! Why? What would you miss?
I have to say, I was a network engineer in the late 90's with Cisco Systems and when I left that job I got rid of all computers, my tv, and only had a land line phone. I did that for two years and it was a good break.
I guess I should also say I am pretty much bored with the internet. I do not play games and I just use it for email and other communication. The voice recognition makes writing pretty smooth. I loved skype and google video chat and I have that on the phone.
I am also going to be traveling for an extended period with pretty much just a backpack so it lightens the load extremely well. Plus the camera on this thing is fun, check out my pics, I took all of these on the phone:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/113449280935158277907/albums/posts
All you need is a bluetooth mouse, keyboard and a monitor.
What about Odin? You may need it when you least expect it. I hardly ever use mine either but when my last one was broken, I had to rely on a friend when a ROM I tried went nuts

I flashed a bad kernel that hosed my recovery as well, I had to dust off the ol computer and do an odin.

Yeah, that is the one thing that gives me a little but of concern. But UnNamed ROM has been very solid but I am continuing to test so if I need I can go back to Stock if I start traveling. And if Sprint lets out an update without CIQ I will probably load that in case my hardware breaks and I need to take it into sprint.
But I do have the stock EG30 ROM with the one click installer on an USB stick which I can always use in case of an emergency.
I've used nothing but a phone or a tablet instead of a p.c. for well over a year, now.
To be honest, it's not really about the Android device that I'm on, it's more about the apps I have installed, and about the connection speed in which I can connect to the Internet:
My "substitute ET4G for computer" doesn't really seem too much different than my "substitute Evo3d for computer", or even my "substitute Evo4G for computer", as far as just getting things done...
(It's not really the device that matters, in that respect.)

I still have a computer, but my main device has been a mobile device for well over 2 years. Now, between my tablet and my phone, my computer is used almost solely to stream netflix to my tv and as a music server for my stereo rig. I will prolly keep it around for the foreseeable future, but it gets less and less use.
Are you hurting for money or something? Why would you sell your laptop? Doesn't make sense.

Well, I am not hurting for money but I do prefer a simpler life. I try to live on less than $1100 a month and add I said,I will be traveling light the next few months so getting rid of six pounds is huge. Plus the extra cash would pay for most of my train travel.
But, when I do find my next place to live I will probably build a low power desktop.

I have 2 laptops, and 2 desktops in my house that I rarely, if ever, touch.
Yet I spend a great deal of my free time on the internet, and doing "computer work".
Why is it so hard to believe that someone might want to get rid of something that they almost never use?

Google chrome preinstalled and default would be nice too.
I have the fastest AMD comp u can prettu much build. 6 cores overclocked to 4.2 Ghz i use it when i need to download some things that dont work over phone, craigs list and building simple websites some times. Also i use odin of course. Backing up picturea and music. Its atleast $1, 500 state of the art comp i build. Sadly i use it maybe 3x a month. If i had to choose only 1 device id use my phone. Phones are amazing now that i got this GSII
I traded in my beloved Dell XPS1710 for an Iconia Tab last April. Most of my "computer work" on my laptop was just surfing and email. I still have a home built desktop that I use for work (development) that just can't be done on a tab or phone.
Now I have the E4GT and I do fine with 95% of my needs. If I were not a developer, I probably wouldn't need the PC at all. But there are a few things that I just need the PC for, (DVD buring comes to mind).
I'm somewhere in between. Have my laptop with a 24" external monitor at the office and use my SGSII when I'm at home. If I need some serious power or screen real estate I just take the laptop home with me. Laptop for work, phone for entertainment ;-)
FoxFi in the market place. (no outside link, under 8 posts )
Just discovered this. Works perfectly. Works on my Kindle Fire and my brother's iPad (not ad-hoc.)
Note: it launches Sprint Hotspot but doesn't seem to make any changes. From my research it doesn't seem like Sprint notices the usage. Can anyone comment on this?
It works good

Currently on FB21 ICS; App installs, runs, and creates Hotspot.
However, iPad2 DOES connect, but says no internet access.
Will test on Android Tablet / Laptop when I get home.

Haha you did not have to do all that my friend. There is a thread for odex Hotspot. All you had to do is root with sfhub, load up CWM or if you did not want to do that just push over the two files and your done. I had to do that for a girlfriend of mine as well. Its the easiest way to go... Except for this great find
Loll well last time, she was on froyo and was easy enough to root, using the one click. Had her download all the drivers, Android sdk and other tidbits. (she has the og epic) so with gingerbread could not use the same way lol

Can anyone confirm that Sprint doesn't notice? I'm not launching it until I'm positive I'm not gonna get an inflated bill next cycle.
Trying on laptop and shows connected but limited connectivity without internet access. Does this only work with tablets?

It actually isn't illegal, and on Verizon because of a spectrum deal with the FCC it is actually quietly explicitly allowed. In Sprint, you could argue it is a breach of contract, which is a civil matter, not legal matter.
