[Q] Incredible not booting into Recovery - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I've been running CM7 on my phone for a quite some time now, but now all of a sudden all my apps force close when opened. I tried a week a go to enter recovery (before the force closes) both manually and from RM with no luck. I can enter bootloader manually but when I choose recovery it just gives me the white HTC Incredible page and sits there with taking the battery out as the only option.
Any suggestions on what the problem is?
Thanks in advance.

Have you tried flashing recovery again?
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium

does that require RM? Because I can't open it as it FC's on me everytime...

Ok so from bootloader i tried a factory reset, and the same HTC Incredible splash screen. I think the problem is something to with the flashing, because when i start bootloader it says something about some .zip file not having an image. (sorry about sounding like a noob).

Flash recovery thru hboot (vol down plus power while phone is off) as a PB31IMG.zip, RM is not needed. You can get the recovery here http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=28. Download the PB31IMG.zip file and place it on your sd card in no folders. Boot into hboot, it will find the file and prompt to press vol up to apply. Then vol up to reboot. Then boot into hboot and select recovery.
In recovery, wipe everything in mounts and storage and also dalvik cache, and then flash the rom of your choice or restore a known working nandroid.

Thank You! I really appreciate it.
Saved me from throwing my phone at a wall

I downloaded the file, renamed to PB311MG.zip, moved to root of SD card (no folders) and when I boot into hboot, it does not recognize the file. Im just stuck @ bootloader, when I try to boot into recovery, HTC Incredible pops up for a second, and I'm right back where I was. Any clues?

That is an incorrect label. It must be: PB31IMG.zip
The number "31" is followed by the letter "I" in the .zip file name. Also, have you revealed file extensions with your preferred file explorer? You must avoid labeling the file "PB31IMG.zip.zip"

2 things....That was a typo on my end....it was a 31IMG, not 311MG, and my mistake was adding the .zip. I was able to get into recovery, did my wipes, and am restoring a back up as I write this. Thanks for the help.

Not a problem so long as everything is squared away for you.

i rooted my evo and then reinstalled a backup, now i cannot start the evo, it just keeps rebooting. i have tried to restore nand backup, installing the new pc36img.zip file and reformatting the sd card. when i start with the pc36img.zip file on the root of the sd card, i get no image or wrong image. it also has the newest ota. any help would be greatly appreciated.

you have to use OTA simple root, you can't use the regular simpleroot and most likely you nand wasn't unlocked that's why you have the bootloop.

I have tried multiple PC136img.zip files.
Thank you
I used the ota simple root... when it was done, i tried to restore a backup of all my apps and data using my backup, that's when the loop started. I can boot into boot loader, nand, restore, etc... but nothing seems to get me out.
Thank you
What HBOOT version do you have? When you statr phone with volume down and power, white screen you come to at the top should be the version.
The HBoot is 0.79.0000
erase all the new files from your sd csrd....like pc36 and the flast image and image1-3...then start over using simpleroot 1.47
Thanks but I cannot boot the phone at all. I was able to format the card to fat32, boot the phone to recovery, start the ota simple root, on pc run Windows-recovery, start a adb shell and push the pc36img from simple root to it... but when I reboot from there, I get the "no image or wrong image". Then it will say loading... pc36img.zip for about 30 seconds, then says checking pc36img.zip for another 30 and go to the menu with "fastboot, recovery, clear storage etc..."
I can select "recovery" and see any Rom or zip file and load it; but it will still boot to a loop.
Thanks again.
Have you tried toasts part 2 in its entirity? You dont have the engineering hboot. Look for whiteslacks starting over it will tell you to do toasts part 2 first then run the whiteslack method you are going to have to get engineering hboot to do much of anything.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I will try it out and let you know. Thank you very much.
i tried the toast 2, but can't seem to get past the mtd-eng.img part.'
here's what i get. First i Hold down the vol button and press power. once the phone starts, i scroll down to recovery and press power. in recovery it says "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1" at the top and bottom of the screen. Now i open a command prompt on my computer and type in, "recovery-windows" the phone then goes into the android system recovery, and at the bottom says "Build : not set". From here i can open shell on the computer by typing "adb shell", but when i type in the first line "cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image" it returns "cat: can't open '/sdcard/flash_image': No such file or directory" but i can ls while in a shell and see the file in the data directory and i can cd to any directory. the flash_image file is in the data director, and i can change the permissions with 755, but cannot get past that part.
OK... I don't really know how, but i was able to finally get it to see the PC36img.zip files. i pushed the flash_image to the /data directory, wiped everything and rebooted with the new PC36IMG file on the root. it asked if i wanted to update, and the rest is history...
Thank you for all your help.
I never used simple root and i dont recommend by other suggestionfor many issue during the process. Always i use this way and work perfectly easy and useful step by step , then last step flash custom rom

[Q] PB31IMG.ZIP Splash Screens

I am somewhat of a noob to this sort of thing. I rooted my phone and am running Frost ROM 2.1, I have a custom boot animation and it all works great....here is the problem. Before I knew how to use SDK tools I tried to install the PB31IMG.ZIP file to flash a new splash screen. It didn't work. Now when I try to use Hboot USB to flash a new image it still says it's trying to open the PB31IMG.ZIP file. The file is not found and gives an error.
A. I deleted the file from my sdcard.
B. I wiped the cache and did a system wipe as well.
C. I completely reinstalled the custom rom. Which I thought would reformat and get rid of all old data.
How do I get it to not look for the PB31IMG.ZIP file and flash a new splash screen?
Please help! Thanks!
flash a new room it is easy go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812572 he has many flashable splash screens and even a tutorial on how to make your own, it is somewhere in the thread, all you have to is download a splash, make sure it is named PC36IMG.zip, put the file on the root of your sd card, power your phone into HBOOT pressing down and power and holding till it comes up, it will find the PC36IMG.zip and ask if you want to update press up for yes then it will ask to reboot press up again and you should have your new splash HOPE THIS HELPS GOOD LUCK

[problem] desire restarting after cyanogen flash

Heya,
I was using the LeeDroid ROM until today, when I desided I want Cyanogen.
I backed up the phone using ROM Manager, wipe and flashed Cyanogem 6.1 RC2. The phone restarted, turned on - but it cn't load the actual android OS - just keeps restarting on the blue wheel-thing animation.
I can boot my phone into recovery, but can't do much from there since its S-ON.
The recovery windows says:
bravo pvt1 ship s-on
hboot-0.80.0000
microp-031d
touch panel-synt0101
radio-5.10.05.23
fastboot
recovery
clear storage
simlock
what can I do to get my phone working again? Will a simple restore using HTC software do the trick (followed by root with unrevoked)?
Thanks

Which version of Clockworkmod recovery did you fakeflash? There is an issue with the latest one that makes your SDcard unaccessible afterwards. It also mess up your USB.
Here is a thread that guides you how to fix it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639
I used the latest one, 2.5.1.7 I think.
Isn't there a way to restore the phone with the HTC software, sonething lite the iphone+itunes combo?
Is your sd card not being recognzed?
As you said you created a backup using rom manager before you flashed the new rom. So why dont you just enter hboot, go to recovery and the restore youre phone to the backup that you made using rom mabager before you flashed?
When I select "recovery" using the HBOOT I get a picture of a phone, and a red triangle with an exclamation mark. Does this mean I have to do the USB brick fix?
hmmm thats odd ... sounds like it could be a usb brick related issue, im not sure as i havnt had the same problem before or seen anyone else in the forum experiencing this problem.
I think you should read up more about the usb brick fix, hopefully there is something there that would be able to help you ... if its already known that the latest version of clockworkmod does give this problem then im sure its this and you would be able to find a solution to this problem.
Good luck
UPDATE:
My bad, I was supposed to press volumeup+power to see the recovery screen.
Now, when I do that I get "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command", and get only 4 options:
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe date
wipe cache
Is this related to the USB BRICK thing?
You need to wipe data when switching roms, this will fix the bootloop.
I would also suggest you flash a permanent recovery for ease of use. You need to use unrevoked to do this.

This is the default android recovery screen. The error "E:Cant open...." is something I also get.
Do you have an update.zip on your SDcard? Like the clockworkmod recovery? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839640Use 2.5.0.7 and not 2.5.1.2 (has the fail you most likely see now). If correct update.zip on SDcard, try to press apply sdcard. If youre able to do so, you are accessing your sdcard. If youre getting problems applying this update file. I suggest following the thread I told you in my first post You then have to make your SDcard accessible with a fastboot command.
You are accessing fastboot by holding vol down while powering your phone on. Select fastboot. Plug your USB. Download the Android SDK or only fastboot.exe. Run this command from cmd: "fastboot oem enableqxdm 0". You should get a return command like "okay", and your SD card should be accessible again. Now you will need to follow the guide and fix your USB. However, you should be able to flash a new ROM now when your SDcard is accessible again, or just restore the nandroid backup that gave you this problem to begin with

When i select that I get "E; failed to open sdcard\update.zip (no such file or directory)

Do you have a mem reader for windows/linux? Look if you have the file or not. If you don't have it, copy it there. If it's there, you have a problem with accessing the SDCard.
I would say, If I were you, I would try to "repair" the SDcard with the fastboot command first. Most likely, your ROM will boot again when it can read from your SDcard.
Other options would be to try to push the update file with ADB in Android Recovery. Most likely you can't push it either since your SDcard most likely is inaccessible. Try fastboot
Download Android SDK for Windows here: http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r07-windows.zip
MD5: 69c40c2d2e408b623156934f9ae574f0
Unzip the file. Open CMD, navigate to the tools folder in SDK. Issue the command.

I ran the SDcard fix on CMD, it said "OKAY", but nothing changed in the phone's condition.
I put the SDcard on a card reader and saw there are backup files (.img) in the clockworkmod directory. how do i get the phone to recover from them?
The "update.zip" file, where can i get that one?

You can get your update.zip file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839640
Download the 2.5.0.7 zip file and rename to update.zip. Put on root of SDcard and apply sdcard: update.zip in android recovery. From here, go to nandroid, restore, and select your backup.
Doesn't the Update.zip file suppose to be a zipped ROM?
Not necessarily. A zip can flash a lot of different things. I'm not that much into it. But it all depends on the content of the zip file.

Don't remember what it's called exactly. But when running update.zip (clockworkmod), you should have a restore menu somewhere...
Thanks a lot man! recovering right now.. will update when done.
About that S-ON thing, will the Unrevoked reflash option "Remove phone security" take care of this? Is there a risk in re-rooting?
I want to add some notifications sounds and the "system" folder is write protected
EDIT:
The restore works just fine!

[Q] Newest Hboot Version

Right now I'm running Hboot version 0.77.0000 and im just wondering what the most recent version of hboot is because virtous 3.2.0 is saying i need 0.92 to use it
thanks
.92 I'm pretty sure is the newest
I'm searching everywhere. if you can find a link please let us know so I can go download that damn thing...
Found it: http://dougpiston.com/files/Hboot/PB...-0.92.0000.zip
Now I just need the md5 before I try to use this file. remember to rename it and watch the extension.
Can someone please confirm the MD5 sum? this is what I get from the download, but I cant confirm that this is even the right file:
54A82417C62C8B3DDACA785EBDCE6BFB *PB31IMG.zip (IS THIS .92?)
6B665D591D8A02D3165C0F0A67E521D0 *PB31IMG-hboot-0.92.0000.zip (IS THIS .92?)
the difference between these two files is 2MB in size. one of these two files is not correct... need help identifying the correct .92 HBOOT please.
Thanks for the info. Do I just have to name it pmg......
Zip or something like that and just flash it. And can anyone confirm that link?

it should be a .zip file. the name of the file should be PB31IMG.ZIP
Also, you will have to restore the nandroid backup you make prior to flashing hboot as your phone will not boot (boot to recovery, restore from backup) the HBOOT will erase the kernel requiring a restore.
But lets confirm that the link I'm providing is the actual .92 hash before applying, else we can be bricking our phones today.

Hboot Upgrade Instructions
As of Virtuous 3.2.0, hboot 0.92 is now required. This hboot shipped with the original Froyo OTA for the Incredible.
1. Download this file and place it at root of your sdcard.
2. Boot into the bootloader. There are several ways to do this. If you are already booted into Android, use Quickboot and select the Bootloader option. You can also use adb by typing "adb reboot bootloader". Or, simply power down the device. Once it is off, hold the volume down button and then press power.
3. Once in the bootloader, select the first option from the menu "bootloader". You should see a progress bar on the right side of the screen. If you do not, you did not perform step #1 correctly or your sdcard is not formatted FAT32.
4. You will then be prompted to confirm flashing boot, bootloader and recovery. Hit volume up to confirm and then reboot.
5. At this point hboot is upgraded. I recommend reinstalling Virtuous (either via ROM Manager or manually) just to be safe.

THANK YOU!
I've spent the last 4 hours trying to accomplish this.
Update- I may have spoke to soon. After reboot I now find that my touchscreen isn't working at all. I can boot into hboot, recovery, and all that jazz. Get to the unlock screen, and in some spots there are tiny black lines running through the display. I am wondering if this is because I may have an SLCD screen or vice versa that is incompatible? I am not sure what screen I have, would there be a way to tell?
- I tried wiping dalvik cache and factory resetting, this was said on another forum. Now I am stuck at the HTC splash screen. Any help???
- Never mind. Forgot to use recovery, did a restore, and everything is just snazzy, 0.92 and all. Thanks again! =)

[q] phone won't go past booting screen after loading rom!

Hopefully I can get some answers here....I've got an EVO 4g.
Rooted it with Revoked 3, successfully.
Then, I went straight to downloading Cyanogen 7 from the website. It said it installed and went the the blue screen with the circling arrows. But, it kept re-booting over and over and never went to my home screen.
Heres where I'm at:
If I turn my phone on it goes to the white HTC Evo 4g screen shuts off and goes to Recovery.
I am able to get into my SD in USB on recovery.
I DID NOT Wipe before installing the rom. I prolly missed some steps, but hey, I'm learning now. When I tried to install the Cyanogenmod 7 again, it says this:
assert failed: write_raw_image("/tmp/boot.img" ,
"boot")
E:Error in /sdcard/cm_supersonic_full-86.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborted
PLEASE HELP!
Click on "amon_RA Recovery" in my signature to download amon_RA's PC36IMG.zip file and place it on the root of your SD card. Afterwards, shutdown your device. Now simultaneously, press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your EVO starts. Afters a short pause, a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. After that, the bootloader *should* automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the prompts to install it. Installation takes less than 10 seconds to complete. When it's done, reboot into your new recovery, go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card. DO NOT REBOOT! Go to the flash zip menu and flash your rom. Afterwards, flash the GAPPS.zip, if necessary and then reboot your device. Be patient on the first boot.
Not wiping was your main problem, and with Amon Ra, anytime you flash a new ROM, after you do a nandroid backup of everything but cache, wipe everything, except the SDcard, like Dougjamal said.
That is a critical step.
And yeah, the first boot up will take some time, possibly up to 10 minutes or so...
Be patient. you'll know you're fine as long as the boot animation isn't bootlooping (freezing for a sec, then restarting the animation). Once your key lights come on, you'll know you're there.
ok, I'm going to try it. Yea...after I downloaded it it was bootlooping, so I took the battery out and when I put it back in, it wouldnt move past the htc boot screen. I'm trying that now. That PC36 file is only 3.45MB's. shouldnt it be bigger?

No sir. It is not a rom. It's a recovery. I got the link directly from amon's thread.
ok when I come into the boot screen it just reads the pc36img file and does nothing. Doesn't ask me to install or anything? What could cause that?

First of all, look at the top of the screen and see if it still states "S-OFF". If it states "S-ON', you need to re-root. Is there any other file with the name PC36IMG.zip on the root of your SD card? If there is, move it to a folder and leave the one for amon_RA in place. Also, make sure that the file does not contain a second zip suffix (For example: PC36IMG.ZIP.zip). If it does, remove the extra .zip from the name. If all of that has been checked, turn OFF your device and try again. It should take. If it does not, replace the file with a freshly downloaded one.
whoops had to flash unrevoked forever again.
