Upgrading to CM7 on the Defy - Defy General

How do I back up my present Eclair before upgrading to CM7 on the Defy?
I have managed to get into the clockwork mod section boot menu (blue light) but I am still having a little trouble in backing up my present Android Eclair o/s.
I was at the point of trying to do the backup of the present installation of my phone but got this error message:
"Clockwork Mod Recovery v2.5.1.8
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(No such file or directory)
Can't mount /sdcard"
Do you know why I received this error message above?
I had copied all the data off the sd card to my pc and formatted the sd card but still I get this same message.
I wanted to backup the Eclair so that if I ever needed to revert back to it in case of sending phone off for repair or replacement etc under warranty I can go back to the original system without voiding my warranty due to going to CM7 non-motorola released o/s update.
After I have done this backup in the Recovery and Backup section of Clockwork Mod I believe then will need to put Froyo on before I can go to CM7 Gingerbread.
I believe I have downloaded everything I need to get the job done but just not sure how exactly to do it especially this backup part so I can stay safe.
If you can advice me I appreciate it.
Cheers,
John

BUMP: I'm having the same problem, used gparted to repartition sdcard which allowed me to Mount USB storage. When i try to mount /sdcard card i receive
Code:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk1)
(Invalid argument)
Error mounting SDCARD:!
Are you using setcpu? I had same message the other day when in clockwork. I had an idea to try to set speed back to stock and unchecked set on boot, rebooted in to clockwork and all was well. Not sure if the clockspeed and and set on boot has anything to do with it, but I had a feeling that it messed with backup/restore when writing/reading a custom speed specified to boot with. Anyway it worked for me on virtuous with 7.28 radio and kings bfs 5
Had the same issue... Formatted the SD card (using the phone, under settings/sd card) and it never happened again.

to follow this up, i was experiancing similar problems
like an idiot i ejected the SD card with the power on (bad idea) and had to format it
the card worked fine under my rom (miui) but when i booted into clockwork mod v4.something
i unmounted the SD card in the phone options and formatted it, after re mounting it the phone gave me a notification that the SD card was an unsupported format
so what i did was click that notification and format the card again
i booted into recovery and it worked, i hope this helps someone in the future

So why are you posting in a Forum devoted to the HTC Droid Incredible?
Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk error
I received a replacement Dinc from Verizon under the extended warranty. My problem is that the new phone won't backup or restore under CWM. I get a notice that "E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblkp1p (or mmcblk)
My old phone was rooted with the 2.3.4 version 4.06 GB stock rooted ROM. I made a nandroid backup with CWM recovery 5.0.0.6. So far all is good. The replacement phone with amoled screen came with GB 2.3.4. (unrooted and s-on.) Following the directions in Droid Forums I downgraded to 2.2, rooted using unrevoked3, turned s-off with unrevoked forever and reinstalled 2.3.4 version 4.06. All files found from links of XDA. (THANKS to all for the great instructions and files.)
But now on the new phone the nandroid backup and recovery from CWM won't work as I get the above error. II read that the sd card needs to be reformatted but when I put it back in the old phone, CWM works well without the error. Any suggestions?

I would first try to format your sdcard fat32, but dont put any of the old files back on yet. Then with the blank sdcard inserted try to run a backup and see if it works. If not try reflashing cwm thru hboot. Also make sure you have superuser and busybox installed. mmcbkk0p1 is the data partition, see if you can manually mount it thru recovery in the mounts and storage menu.

Its mmcblk1p1 he said. That isn't the data partition . I think it is sdcard. I think an sdcard format will do the trick.

[Q] How screwed am I?

I only loaded a new rom on the incredible successfully once, last summer when the signed 2.2 rom came out early and I couldn't wait for the OTA.
I had this problem crop up that said my storage was full when I had gobs of space left on my internal storage and my sd card. Finally, after I did the factory reset option and still had the storage issue, I decided to try reflashing with a new rom because my phone was becoming unusable. I couldn't install apps, save contacts or even open text messages. My phone wouldn't even sync with Google.
I decided to try flashing with the redemption rom after reading some good things about it.
I managed to load it successfully, but I still had the storage error! argh!
After trying to reformat some things with the ClockworkMod Recovery partition menu, I tried to reload the redemption rom again. Something went wrong.
Now I get messages saying(on the ClockworkMod recovery screen):
_______
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
E:Can't mount Cache:recovery/command
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
E:Can't mount Cache:recovery/log
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
When I choose the option to install the redemption rom off my sd card in the clockworkmod, it fails after giving me similar error messages.
I'm stumped. Can anyone point me towards the right thread to deal with this? I can't boot to install any other software onto my phone. Practically everything I try gives me can't mount error messages.
I was hungry and in a hurry and never made a nandroid backup I HAVE tried reformatting the sd card, but I got no different results from that.
So am I A) totally screwed, B) somewhat screwed, or C) not screwed at all, just an idiot?
Help?
im in the same boat. i have no idea how to fix it. ive tried every fic i can find on google and NOTHING works. someone HALP
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/6433-solved-messed-up-partitions-on-internal-storage/page__st__20 the site wont let me post a link, but this is what i used. i can now mount data and cache. working on booting now.
Have you tried a different SD card? Your SD card could have failed or become corrupt in some way.
I doubt you are totally messed up. You may need to get a brand new factory ROM (on your new SD Card) and start from there. Just Google it. As for an SD Card, there will be a few on sale Friday.
As for the full memory, I had that same problem, it's a cache issue with the HTC software (HTC Mail, Facebook, Peep and such). Once you get back up and running make sure you root (unrEVOked is working on a work around for the latest mid Nov OTA but there are other ways to root) and get a Cache Cleaner. It's not a permanent fix, but it does work.
Good luck!
Thanks for the response. I have yet to try Barbee's solution, but I did try another SD Card. I reformatted both cards to Fat32 and had the same error message on both. I'm going to go grab my phone and try Barbee's solution next.
it might be that version of CWM recovery is just retarded. what version are you on
I take no credit for this but try this its on Adrynalyne's blog http://adrynalyne.us/
"There have been a few cases where /cache has been corrupting on the DI."
"To fix this, you must be in clockwork recovery.
First, unmount cache from partitions menu.
Then, mount system from the same menu.
adb shell
system/bin/e2fsck -p /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
exit"
That should fix the issue you guys are having.
Thanks Barbee, I was able to unbrick with your solution! Pretty muh all of that was way over my head, but the instructions were clear and they worked. Now I just need to get that Redemption rom to work with the *228 option1 programming on the phone... that doesn't work now lol.
That's easy, go into settings sounds and turn the touch tones to long. This is common in custom roms.

what happened was you trashed your internal partitions using cwm partitioner......the method on cyanogen's forum shows how to properly reformat the internal partitions to ext2 and gets you back to having a usable phone.
Glad to hear it helped you. But all the credit goes to the guys in the link post. It was a little over my head too lol. I've used adb before but not for a life or death situation lol

flashing questions but not what you think

I get the tuts and can probably follow them, but. I rooted my desire with unrevoked 3 without any major problems, downloaded titanium and backed up. But not sure about how it pans out. If i flash a rom will titanium be there to restore my apps and such wheb the new rom boots? or do i do it through recovery, how do i make sure i dont loose everything?

Titanium Backup saves backups on your sd card, so just flash and download titanium from the market and you will be fine
nice one cheers, any other snipets of info you think might come in handy?

E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
E:can't mount SDEXT
E:Failure at line 11

Instalation aborted.
Again sorry if its straight outta the blue but i thought i had got my head round it and then BOOM (wrong) lol.Any helps good help, thanx in advance
the rom you are trying to use needs a ext partition on the SD card.
if you dont have ext partition you need to make one. you can use rom manager from market to do this. But back up the sd card before trying this as it formats it, then you can move the data back.
check the site on my signature tells you how to make ext partition for apps2sd
I would normaly follow your advice but i dont get a boot of any kind.just hangs at splash screen so no market available. The only thing i can get to right now is recovery but not sure how to recover and everything i have tried seems to give me errors. My heads goin lol.
Anyone out there? lol.Just wondering how to create the ext partition using recovery so i can flash the ROM and how to restore the stock ROM (which i got before any of my problems started .Any helps good, right now i dont have a phone i can use and i'm pretty scuppered without one.Thanx
If you have amon-ra recovery, you can create it from the recovery. But I think you have clockwork, so you need to flash a stock rom to get your phone back
Or use a gparted live cd and put your SDcard in your pc and then make and ext3 partition.
Yes i have clockwork mod.I flashed it with a stock ROM then installed rom manager from marketplace to create the partition, then flashed the HD ROM.Probably the long way round for anyone who knows what they are doing but hey it worked .Thanx for your help, just gotta figure out now its working why it keeps re-starting

[Q]

Hello,
im in some big trouble.
I tried installing the new sense gingerbread rom.
It would not boot and i accidently formatted my sd card.
Now i cant boot the rom (loops at the android splash logo) and can no longer get into clockwork recovery.
All i can do is get into standard android system recovery.
if i use apply sdcard: update.zip i get the feeling it tries to go to clockwork
it says: e:cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (invalid argument)
Is there a way to get this phone again...rooted or unrooted?
Please help me
Maybe to save yourself time you could just run an ruu and it will return you to stock. Then you just root again.

[Q] help please

okay so i have an evo 4g rooted 2.3 with amon ra custom recovery.. i attempted to flash a new rom synergy i did a full wipe on everything data/system/cache/delvik cache and began to flash the rom the rom got half way through and gave me an error message "opps something went wrong check recovery log" so i decided to just forget flashing that rom so i did another whip completely and decided to just do a nanodroid restore on my old rom. that got half way through and came up with an error message saying " internal memory full" so i did another wipe and tried again but this time i came up with the error E: cannot mount sd card.. I can't even us Mass storage to reformat my card so i pulled it out and reformatted it on my computers sd slot and put the custom recovery back on and the recovery files and yet still i cannot mount sd card... i also get an error when trying to flash a rom E: dev/Block/ a series of numbers and letters. my phone is currently bricked if you ask me but what doesnt make sense is how i can put clockworkmod recovery image PC36IMG.zip and in my bootloader screen it asks me if i want to update so technically my phone is reconizing the sd card but the recovery is not mounting it or accepting it does anyone have any idea and any info they can provide to me? sorry for this long thread lol just wantted to get all the details out.
