I get the tuts and can probably follow them, but. I rooted my desire with unrevoked 3 without any major problems, downloaded titanium and backed up. But not sure about how it pans out. If i flash a rom will titanium be there to restore my apps and such wheb the new rom boots? or do i do it through recovery, how do i make sure i dont loose everything?

Titanium Backup saves backups on your sd card, so just flash and download titanium from the market and you will be fine
nice one cheers, any other snipets of info you think might come in handy?

Hi peeps sorry to butt in here but i'm having problems getting a ROM to flash.I'm in recovery and have factory wiped and cleared dalvic but when i choose to install zip from SD and choose Zip, the flash starts then aborts.Theres a couple of errors, goes something like this.

E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2

E:can't mount SDEXT

Again sorry if its straight outta the blue but i thought i had got my head round it and then BOOM (wrong) lol.Any helps good help, thanx in advance
the rom you are trying to use needs a ext partition on the SD card.
if you dont have ext partition you need to make one. you can use rom manager from market to do this. But back up the sd card before trying this as it formats it, then you can move the data back.
check the site on my signature tells you how to make ext partition for apps2sd
I would normaly follow your advice but i dont get a boot of any kind.just hangs at splash screen so no market available. The only thing i can get to right now is recovery but not sure how to recover and everything i have tried seems to give me errors. My heads goin lol.
Anyone out there? lol.Just wondering how to create the ext partition using recovery so i can flash the ROM and how to restore the stock ROM (which i got before any of my problems started .Any helps good, right now i dont have a phone i can use and i'm pretty scuppered without one.Thanx
If you have amon-ra recovery, you can create it from the recovery. But I think you have clockwork, so you need to flash a stock rom to get your phone back
Or use a gparted live cd and put your SDcard in your pc and then make and ext3 partition.
Yes i have clockwork mod.I flashed it with a stock ROM then installed rom manager from marketplace to create the partition, then flashed the HD ROM.Probably the long way round for anyone who knows what they are doing but hey it worked .Thanx for your help, just gotta figure out now its working why it keeps re-starting

double check your partitions, make sure you have FAT32 + EXT3 @512mb then flash the chosen rom again, this is your best chance.
go with my rom, linked through my signature, the update will wipe the Cache + dalvik cache but keep all of you personal data and apps.

How do i check the partitions? Cant boot so can`t see them that way and haven't got card reader or anything. Im sure its got something to do with partition. Does this seem like it is causing the problem?
Any help appreciated.
bump, need help
have you wiped everything before flash?
I wiped with rom manager after downloading rom. Not sure of all the custom recovery options as rom manager usually does it all for you. Not sure if i should wipe date, cache etc, will this wipe my backups? Tried removing sd card but wont boot, not even sure how I would get another custom rom on sd card so i could flash that. I have both defrost 2.4a and opendesire aswell as a nandroid backup on my sd card but can't get these to boot either
Must be something to do with the sd card partition. Everything I try I get the message
E:Can`t mount/dev/block/mmcblk0p2(file exists)
error mounting sd/ext/!
Don't know what this means but think its causing the problem.
perhaps a bad sector on the SD?
try backing up everything on the SD, format it again & try the roms one by one to see which possible causes the issue
U need to try an alternative recovery.
Try using unrevoked, and flash and different recovery.
Sounds like the fake flash recovery u got with rom manager Isn't clearing ur partitions.

in Windows XP Disk Management, right-click the existing partition,
and click delete, that will leave the whole card as unallocated space. Then
right-click on the unallocated space, and click new partition.
edit : or install http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/sdfv2000.zip
free SD partitioner
in disk management it only shows the size as 3.18gb, I made the partition through rom manager which I think formats it in linux which windows doesn't recognise.
Taking the Sd card out gets in onto the animation screen, so a little further, but still doesn't boot. Very frustrating. \\\\\any more help appreciated.
Flash a ROM that doesn't use Apps2SD.
can you link one for me pal, ripping my hair out here, lol. By the way how do you do full wipe in custom recovery ie data, cache, is that it?
edit. Don't matter. Sorted. Copied an earlier backup of sd card onto spare sd card and did a recovery. Still need to know how to remove the partition from other sd card using windows.
This was definitely the problem and won't be using rom manager to do another partition.
If someone does know how to remove partitions using rom manager from sd card via windows then would appreciate it if you would let me know...
Stock rooted ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694564
Full wipe can be done using the "wipe data/factory reset" option in ClockworkMod Recovery.
To get rid of the ext Partition get gparted or something like that. Normal Windows cant see ext partitions because its a Linux filesystem. You can also take a Linux live cd.
Can't you just take ROM Manager and partition your SD card again? Swap 0/Ext 0/FAT 32 All
It looks like something isnt ok with the partitions so i would recommend to delete all partitions and make them new i also had a problem once with my sd card but after deleting all partitions and repartition it everything was ok again.
I only loaded a new rom on the incredible successfully once, last summer when the signed 2.2 rom came out early and I couldn't wait for the OTA.
I had this problem crop up that said my storage was full when I had gobs of space left on my internal storage and my sd card. Finally, after I did the factory reset option and still had the storage issue, I decided to try reflashing with a new rom because my phone was becoming unusable. I couldn't install apps, save contacts or even open text messages. My phone wouldn't even sync with Google.
I decided to try flashing with the redemption rom after reading some good things about it.
I managed to load it successfully, but I still had the storage error! argh!
After trying to reformat some things with the ClockworkMod Recovery partition menu, I tried to reload the redemption rom again. Something went wrong.
Now I get messages saying(on the ClockworkMod recovery screen):
_______
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
E:Can't mount Cache:recovery/command
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
E:Can't mount Cache:recovery/log
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
When I choose the option to install the redemption rom off my sd card in the clockworkmod, it fails after giving me similar error messages.
I'm stumped. Can anyone point me towards the right thread to deal with this? I can't boot to install any other software onto my phone. Practically everything I try gives me can't mount error messages.
I was hungry and in a hurry and never made a nandroid backup I HAVE tried reformatting the sd card, but I got no different results from that.
So am I A) totally screwed, B) somewhat screwed, or C) not screwed at all, just an idiot?
Help?
im in the same boat. i have no idea how to fix it. ive tried every fic i can find on google and NOTHING works. someone HALP
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/6433-solved-messed-up-partitions-on-internal-storage/page__st__20 the site wont let me post a link, but this is what i used. i can now mount data and cache. working on booting now.
Have you tried a different SD card? Your SD card could have failed or become corrupt in some way.
I doubt you are totally messed up. You may need to get a brand new factory ROM (on your new SD Card) and start from there. Just Google it. As for an SD Card, there will be a few on sale Friday.
As for the full memory, I had that same problem, it's a cache issue with the HTC software (HTC Mail, Facebook, Peep and such). Once you get back up and running make sure you root (unrEVOked is working on a work around for the latest mid Nov OTA but there are other ways to root) and get a Cache Cleaner. It's not a permanent fix, but it does work.
Good luck!
Thanks for the response. I have yet to try Barbee's solution, but I did try another SD Card. I reformatted both cards to Fat32 and had the same error message on both. I'm going to go grab my phone and try Barbee's solution next.
it might be that version of CWM recovery is just retarded. what version are you on
I take no credit for this but try this its on Adrynalyne's blog http://adrynalyne.us/
"There have been a few cases where /cache has been corrupting on the DI."
"To fix this, you must be in clockwork recovery.
First, unmount cache from partitions menu.
Then, mount system from the same menu.
adb shell
system/bin/e2fsck -p /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
exit"
That should fix the issue you guys are having.
Thanks Barbee, I was able to unbrick with your solution! Pretty muh all of that was way over my head, but the instructions were clear and they worked. Now I just need to get that Redemption rom to work with the *228 option1 programming on the phone... that doesn't work now lol.
That's easy, go into settings sounds and turn the touch tones to long. This is common in custom roms.

what happened was you trashed your internal partitions using cwm partitioner......the method on cyanogen's forum shows how to properly reformat the internal partitions to ext2 and gets you back to having a usable phone.
Glad to hear it helped you. But all the credit goes to the guys in the link post. It was a little over my head too lol. I've used adb before but not for a life or death situation lol

Okay so i gave up half way in my attempt to get the data2sd and its seriously messed up my phone! I cant boot, and in recovery cant flash anything or mount anything as it says;
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
This means i cant restore my nandroid or do anything!
Ive tried flashing an RUU without success!
Any ideas?
I can access recovery, but thats about it!
It says it can't mount your sdcard...try formatting it.
Backup your nand backups from it first.
Might be worth using a PB99IMG.zip from an RUU to go back to stock and then try again
Is your recovery a permanent flash(unrevoked) or a temporary flash? If its a permanent flash, turn off your phone. Take out your SD Card and format it in a computer(FAT32), then it should be able to mount it. Then flash a ROM, get unrevoked again and flash Amon Ra's recovery. In there partition your SD Card(Its the easiest method IMO) and install a ROM with data2SD(Or install d2sd yourself, its very easy).
ive tried a different sd card so i dont think its that, im gonna try the PB99IMG thing..... do i just but it on the sd card and it will run from bootloader?
Yep, put it on the root of the SD card and turn on into HBOOT and it'll find the file and ask if you want to continue
I flashed it but not i just get a boot loop, i can access recovery but i cant apply update zip, i get the same error message.
Any ideas?!
So the PB99IMG.zip flashed - you don't do it through recovery, obviously - and now you're on a boot loop or just stuck at the HTC screen?
yeah pretty much, thing im gonna give cos i have insurance and get a new one! Thanks though!

Looks like you can't mount your SDcard? Fix it with the fastboot command described there.
Good luck!
I flashed a Leedroid 3.0 and it was just stuck in the boot screen. So tried to clear data and all thru recovery and i got this error "can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (File exists) error mounting /sd-ext/!.
I downloaded gparted to repartition my 8gb sd card. I did a ext3 partition. When i plug back the sd card, the error still comes out in recovery mode. Any rom i flash gets stuck in Bootscreen still. I tried partitioning my 4gb sd card but it also gave the same error in the recovery.
please help. Been trying the whole day and still nothing is happening
Have you tried partitioning it through recovery? (If you have that option available)
I'd begin with reflashing a cwm recovery, cause maybe the problem is not your sd. In "mounts and storage" did you try to mount/amount sd-ext ?
Sent from my Desire using LeeDrOiD 2.4.1
I cant also mount/unmount sd ext. It says the same thing. can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (File exists) error mounting /sd-ext/!. should i just buy a fresh new memory card?
What exactly is your recovery ?

flash clockworkmod recovery 2.5.0.7 . Im using a sd card now without partition. It seems to work with the rom. Using Leedroid 2.4.1 . If i use the original SD card and reboot it with it, its just stuck in HTC boot screen.
So you should just use parted again with your stock sd to make it work ...

Common error when card is not partitioned or wrongly partitioned. First make Fat, then make EXT.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7279872&postcount=3
Thanks man. I was able to repartition. I made a wrong partition in gparted. Made a fat32 primary then the second one extended partition. From your post i made it primary also the second one. Now my rom reads the sd card. Thanks again.
Hmmm I had this exact same problem with LeeDroid 3.0.2... Trying to flash without wiping, had about 80 apps on my EXT3 partition... Got stuck on the white HTC screen for about 2 hours, gave up, pulled the battery, tried to flash the alignment zip, still stuck... tried to restore nandroid backup but then started getting this same error as you.
Thankfully was able to rescue all files from my SD card, format and partition again, then flashed LeeDroid 3.0.2 and restored a Titanium backup... everything running smoothly again! Phew...

May I ask how did you manage to do that?
EDIT:
Ok. Apart from the backup/restore issues that depend on having a healthy ext partition as I figure, the "can't mount [..] error mounting /sd-ext/!" problem is responsible for the "green HTC logo on the white screen freeze" also. So I've been trying to make it work all evening and this is what I found:
The Error (at least in my case) and the freaking "green HTC logo" freezez were generated because the Ext partition got corrupted in some bizarre and mysterious way. I have no idea how that could have happened, but I guess a small role in this ballet got played by the ROM itself and maybe even the nandroid backup built into the CWM (ClockWorkMod). It started right after I finished installing a fresh copy of the LeeDroid 2.4.1 and all my favourite apps (which worked flawlessly), rebooted into bootloader > CWM > nandroid and made the full backup of the system. Rebooting the device afterwards got me into the above mentioned freeze.
I tried many things, among which were flashing different ROMs and Radio images (without wiping though), but none worked. I just wanted to roll back to the previous state (because i've spent quite some time configuring and installing the 2.4.1) and it seemed impossible at that point. Browsing the recovery options got me into the Mount and storage section where I noticed the listed error with the ext partition. I thought maybe formatting will help - well, it didn't. After a couple of weird things I had tried, I've decided I should delete the ext partition (leaving just the fat32 intact). Creating a new ext partition from scratch seemed to solve the error. However this didn't solve the freezing. And the reason had to be the fact that when it created the nandroid backup images, the ext was already corrupt (or however unreadable), so the relative image was not written because it didn't see the source.
I doubt there is any way to fully restore my previously installed ROM with all of it's apps in place and in a functioning order, because the ext partition had data on it and now it's missing (hence the freeze).
Therefore the question: what could have gone so badly wrong to compromise the ext partition?
And another one: is the LeeDroid 2.4.1 ROM or the 2.5.0.7 ClockworkMod Recovery the culprit?
Sorry for the looong post. I look further to hearing from Lee, if his busy schedule allows it and thank him in advance.
Cheers!

hi! having the same exact problem right now... could you please help me how did you rescue all of your sd-card and sd-ext partitions? Thank you very much!
same problem on my N1, reparition to resolved
hi..
i got this problem too
i have clockworkmod recovery. pvt4.
cyanogenmod 7.1.
didn't make any partitions,
everything is by default as i got with cyanogenmod
s-on.
sd - 8gb, class2
yesterday my desire freezed.so i had to pull out the battery. but i couldn't turn it on till' i didn't wipe cache and dalvik cache.
When i selected wipe dalvik cache i got this
E: can't mount /dev/ block/mmcblk0p2
(file exists)
but it wiped it and my phone worked.
this appears even without sd card
it freezed after a week again but after a couple of reboots it works again but the error still exists.
i am newbie so i don't know what to do?
So I flashed a ROM which stuffed up my partitions somehow (also became S-ON, WTH?!).
I got 'can't open /dev/block/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1) (invalid argument)' when trying to mount /sdcard.
I also got the aforementioned 'can't open /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 (file exists)' when trying to mount /sd-ext.
After literally 16 hours of head banging, I realised when I partitioned the SD card again that they were logical instead of primary. Partitioned using minitool partition wizard home edition.
Rundown:
I'm using LeeDroid v3.3.3 with clockworkmod recovery 2.5.0.7
Make sure you partition FAT32 first as primary, then ext3 as primary. LeeDroid says to partition ext3 1GB after FAT32, so e.g. my SD card is 16GB, I have ~13.8GB FAT32 | 1GB ext3
This fixed the 'can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0' error, /sdcard is mountable.
You can now run .zip files from recovery (yay!). Throw alignment_ext3.zip on there and run it. You should now be able to mount /sd-ext.
Do a full wipe + Dalvik cache wipe (to test /sd-ext accessibility). For me it was back to normal and I'm currently doing a restore.
Always do a backup.
Hi, I am a total newbie and I rooted my phone (HTC Desire) and have obviously misread some instruction as I seem to have created and Sd-ext partition on the internal drive instead of the external.
I installed JB4.1.1 which is nice and I like it but whenever I try to use the camera I get a "Gallery closed" error. I'm wondering if these can be linked and if the sd-ext partition shouldn't be there? Perhaps the gallery is trying to save in the wrong place or something? I am clutching at straws to thi problem.
How can I safely remove this partition and reclaim it back if it shouldn't be there?
Sorry for being a complete tube!

I highly doubt you made the partition on your internal. That would be difficult if not impossible.
Im guessing you just incorrectly made the partition.
Are you s-off? If so download the 4ext recovery app from http://4ext.net/. Install the apk and choose Online Install | Upgrade
It will ask if your phone is the HTC Desire GSM. Say yes, unless your phone isnt. (then go to the right forum )
Then you will see a list of all the different versions. Click on the latest one, and then install. It will tell you if it flashed succesfully, and then you can exit the app. To confirm it installed: turn off the phone, then turn it back on using power button + volume down. Then in bootloader select recovery. 4ext should come up instead of cwm.
Once you successfully have 4ext recovery installed look at this guide to see how to properly make the ext partition. Use the 4ext method and start at step [4].
Finally after you have done that, i would recommend doing a full wipe (everything except sd card) and reflashing the rom.
Many thanks, I'll try this. Good to know I couldn't screw anything up
