Hi I have an Xperia PLAY from Three UK which is SIM locked.
I've rooted my Xperia PLAY with DooMLoRD's brilliant tool but from what I've read I can't flash a custom recovery on a SIM-locked device.
If this is true can someone please tell me how I can unlock it and enable me to flash the recovery?
If this is false, how do I now go about flashing the Clockwork recovery or an alternative?
PLEASE HELP
As I understand it there are two ways to use a custom recovery, but both need an unlocked bootloader (unlocking should also sim-unlock the device) so you can access fastboot.
There is a good post in the general forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294129) which should provide you with all the information you need.

Hi guys,i have in my hands an italian xperia play(r800i) with the last 2.3.4 firmware(i dont remember if it is .64 or .62,in every case it is the latest firmware.my question is:how to root and next install cwm?i read of a method with fastboot which start a recovery for install the xperiaroot.zip.it is valid for my phone?and next, how to make recovery permanent without changing kernel?is this method valid? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840 i specify that the phone has locked bootloader.
Up Someone can reply one of this questions?thanks
You can't use fastboot with a locked bootloader. Also you need root before you can run that CWM app. To get root follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
Then you can just run that CWM app to install recovery. This is somewhat permanent, as it stores the recovery in your system partition, this isn't as secure as your kernel partition, but I don't think that's a problem really.
very thanks,so if in future i install that recovery and next i want to flash the doomkernel,i can't because that kernel is incompatible with a previous installed CWM?
Okay sorry about all the threads its just I keep getting other problems. I want to get Root, Unlocked Boatloader, Custom Kernel and a Rom for my arc S. I flashed back to .42 so start all over but I can seem to root it now, if I use SuperOneClick can I still unlock the boatloader? If someone can just post some easy steps that I can follow it would be appreciated. DooMs easy rooting kit did not work either and nierther did the RootXperia.zip file :/ So please help?
Thanks a lot for those who do!
rooting has no effect on bootloader 'unlockability', but if you unlock your bootloader you'll find any kernel/rom you flash will be pre-rooted. There are a few ways to unlock, I used the SE/Sony site which gives you a step by step guide. You can use other methods by certain xda members, though they're not free obviously. I found this helpful too.

Do I unlock the boatloader first?
Yep, no need to root if it's unlocked. Read everything before you attempt it, there are a few downloads before you can use adb(for fastboot, etc) so google anything you're no too clear on. It's fairly straightforward but can be time consuming...

So can I also unlock it .42 then do OTA and it will still be unlocked?
Basically, once you've unlocked your bootloader you can't use OTA or pc companion to update. You need to use firmwares/roms from xda, so you would use flashtool to flash a rom, fastboot to boot a kernel. Most devs will give instructions in their threads. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't automatically root your phone; flashing a custom rom or booting a custom kernel will.

Could you PM me please?
i just bought a new arc s LT18i
I'm a new pie
if i use this tool to root my phone
- DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit [v4.0](zergRush Exploit)
&
i use this tool to install CWM boot from the play store
- Xperia CWM Auto-Installer
i will be able to flash custom roms and custom kernels like (doomloard kernal)????
No. This will only allow you to ROOT your phone.
You need to check to see if you "BOOTLOADER" is unlocked
If the bootloader is unlocked and ONLY IF.
Then you would be able to Flash a Kernel in Fastboot
And
Install a custom rom.
Multiple post on the forum already exist on how-to do all of that.
Cheers.
There are many guides and sticky threads that will help you, provided that you read them of course.

Hi,
I want to install a custom Rom on my Sony Xperia Z1 compact, either CyanogenMod or a Rom from Free Xperia. I wondered if I still have to unlock the bootloader after installation of [NUT]'s DualRecovery.
First the specs of my phone:
Andoroid 4.4.2
Z1C D5503
Build# 14.3.A.0.757
The phone is already rooted using, EasyRootTool v12.4 and SuperSu. Also I installed [NUT]'s DualRecovery:
Z1C-lockeddualrecovery 2.8.14-RELEASE.installer.zip
I also made a backup of the Trim Area and all other partitions using TWRP.
According to the installation instruction for CyanogenMod I'd need to unlock the bootloader and then install ClockworkMod Recovery. And then use CWM to install CyanogenMod (I prefer the sideload method).
I understand the instruction in a way that I have to unlock the device to install CWM.
But after the installation of DualRecovery I already have CWM on the phone. Can I directly boot into CWM to install CyanogenMod without unlocking the device first? I mean CWM is already there to install an image of a different Rom.
Would be great if somebody could tell me if this works. Otherwise I'll get an unlock code and perform the normal steps listed in the Wiki of CyanogenMod. I think I could use those steps to install Free Xperia also.
Thanks!
If you will install cm without unlock bootloader your phone will stuck at Sony logo or get bootloop or soft brick so I recommend to unlock bootloader firstly and after that install any cm roms or custom kernel

Thanks a lot for your answer! That probably saved me from some trouble.
So the boot loader will simply not accept booting a non Sony Firmware without unlocking. Do I understand that correctly?
Will it be possible to install CM after unlocking the bootloader simply by booting to the already installed CWM?
Hello, I've read so many guides that I'm confused. I'm on the N910VVRS2CQB2 6.0.1 rom. I want to flash a note 7 port room on my device but I obviously need to unlock bootloader, flash TWRP and root.
I need someone who can help with a simple guide on how to achieve these (unlocking bootloader, flashing TWRP and rooting), thanks
