[Q] EI22 Voodoo sound mod breaks headphones on my epic, any advice? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For some reason, the "voodoo sound hack" present on pretty much all EI22 EXT4 ROMs breaks headphones. Whenever I plug in headphones, all sound goes silent. I must have tried 4 different roms and 3 different kernels. No matter what I do, headphones wont work :-( Anyone know of a good EXT4 based EI22 ROM and/or kernel without the voodoo sound mod? Anyone else have this issue?
PS: Yes, I have tested different headphones, etc (I've tested and all headphones I've tried work perfectly when plugged into my laptop or my girlfriend's LG Ally, btw). I've tried both CWM and the ACS recovery, and I've started with a fresh flash of EC05 with Odin followed up by the stock EI22 update package each time I tried something new. I've tested headphones at each step, and they always work up until I install one of the ROMs. I've also tried removing and deleting certain audio .txt files from the system/etc/audio folder in the ROMs before flashing and that didnt work either. manually deleting voodoo sound control (if present) from the ROM before installing doesn't work either.
**EDIT**
Also, if someone could give me a brief tutorial on how to remove the sound mod from the .zip file of the ROM, that would be great. I'm no developer, but I regularly tinker around with the files in the ROM files to add/remove what i do and dont want, so im not against getting my hands a little dirty to fix this. Thanks.

The voodoo sound mod works with the voodoo control app which can be removed. However, by default when plugging in headphones the app sets the headphone amplifer to -10db which is much softer than normal. Launch the voodoo control app after plugging in your headphones and increase the amp. If your rom didn't come with the voodoo control app preinstalled just get it from the market.

I already tried that and it didnt work. :-( The problem seems to be rooted in the hack itself, not the voodoo control app.
Like I said, I've literally tried everything i can think of... thanks for replying, tho.

Easiest thing to do is flash a ROM without Voodoo.

Precisely what i've been looking for! Can you suggest any good EI22 EXT4-based ROMs without the sound hack? cuz i cant find any, and i've googled, searched everywhere..

Clean GB does not have Voodoo sound but has the rocker mod for silent/vibrate options. You said it is Voodoo breaking oyur headphones right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344074

That is correct. But cleanGB is RFS only, isn't it? I want a ROM that's EXT4 based

Not sure about Clean GB, but if it is RFS then flash the Samurai kernel on top of that (or any kernel not adding voodoo sound) and then flash rfs2ext4.zip.

Alright! Thanks man!

I hope that gets those headphones working for you.

Apparently the samurai kernel natively supports voodoo sound too, cuz im running a stock ei22 rom converted to ext4, with samurai 2.0.4+ added, and headphones STILL wont work...

Just so you know, you don't have to change roms, just kernels to disable voodoo sound.

I tried that, and it still wouldn't work. Thanks tho.

[Q] Higher earphones volume?

I walk through really loud places on my way to work and back home, and I can hardly hear anything on my earphones (in-ear even). Either my hearing is not at all what it used to, or the volume is just too low.
Is it possible (or is there already a way) to increase the earphones volume above the current limit? (a kernel patch or whatever determines the volume limit)
I know it's a slippery slope to an impaired hearing, but I'll take my chances.

Install Android DSP
http://www.bel.fi/~alankila/android-dsp/
download the update.zip and get the apk inside and install, dunno if it works on all kernels, but works on defrost 2.9, theres a graphical equalizer and some loudness options.
+1 on this, I'd also like to see if there's anything we could do to rise earphones volume...

wow, great. considering it just updates a lib and installs an apk, should sense-based roms users fear any harm?
I will try it right now.
Feedback soon...
Edit: It does not work on nextsense 5.3...

Voodoo Sound Control Plus

Hi guys, I'm sorry if I'm a little slow on this. But how exactly does voodoo sound control work? I'm running the genocide kernel with module v7 and I also have the Voodoo Plus app which contains v8. How do I benefit the most from voodoo, what settings do I adjust etc...?
When the kernel is installed is the stock produced sound automatically enhanced because of the intergrated module v7?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

I force the volume into analog mode and put it at 0 dbm. It's AWESOME!!!!
I keep the mic input as default (not NEW default) original default, and the rest the way it already was. Sounds great in my car.
Yup same, the headphone amplifier is amazing when listening to music from Pandora on my car through the 3.5mm out jack.

Ok, so before I force the volume into analog mode I need to max out the volume on the stock (android system) player correct?

Nah, it'll by default set that to medium and alter the sound system to analog. Give it a try and you'll notice it's much nicer on 0 dbm.

+1 ... So much better when you do this. Good find bro.
Genocide has v7, plus has a newer version which it loads as a kernel module and overrides v7... plus works on virtually any modular kernel including stock. but genocide would work without plus.
as for the differences between 7 and 8, i dont know, youll have to research that on your own.. i believe voodoo sound is up to 10 now...

Hold it RIGHT there. Not anymore, dowloaded Voodoo Control Plus apk, no custom kernel needed. Thank You, Thank You! Sorry, no Flash Photography allowed! ^^ (P.S. away from sarcasm, really thank you to OP for mentioning it, now I'm enjoying it. Lol.)
P.P.S.: Now that I'm re-hearing my music I hear a difference.. now I'm a tad bit sad that I'd been out of the loop. =( Like a tiny fishy who, instead of going with the flow of the river like the rest of the fish, went against it. =/

Voodoo control app

Ok I am searching from my phone and don't see it so if this is already posted I apologize. Search the market for voodoo control app. This app will give you the ability to add voodoo sound if you are rooted. This is mainly for those that want to remain near stock but would like to use voodoo sound. Or if you want to have the ability to toggle between stock and voodoo sound for whatever reason. I have not used voodoo from a kernel or rom so I don't know if there is a difference in quality. All I know is that it sounds much better than stock. So if you are rooted and don't already have voodoo give it a shot and let us know what you think. If someone would compare this to the kernel version that would be great also.

Did the news get around about a guy named butcher pete?

Stock rom system sound is amazing, any custom rom speaker sound is too low, why?

Hey all,
why in any custom rom the maximum ringtones, notifications, songs, and anything that uses the phone speaker is very low you can barely hear the ringtone, the morning alarm - sometimes i miss it -, however in stock roms the sound is amazing and sometimes noisy? why guys? and any fix or a possible solution to fix this?
am running CM10 nightly BTW

I don't know if this phone is like my previous LG Optimus 2X but it also was like that, on Stock ROMS the speaker was way louder than on CyanogenMod based ROMS, try using a stock based ROM or install Volume+ from the Play Store it helps with the speaker volume. (Be careful with Volume+ and don't put the value too high or else the sound may be distorted.)
i've already tried the volume+ with no luck, i think its related to the speakers drivers in sense stock rom, and am looking for an advanced help to be brought to CM10, hope anyone from the dev team to find a real fix for this.
probably due to a proprietary driver in the tegra that is closed source... android is an open source software for closed source handset...

[Q] Audio-jack problem ONLY on non-stock ROMs

(I thought I'd report the following issue, in case someone else had experienced it or if someone understands why)
On non-stock ROMs, the sound from ANY application (phone, music player, etc...) comes out heavily distorted through the audio jack but NOT through the phone's speaker. This has been verified on CM10.1.3 STABLE and various 4.3 ROMS.
I used to not have this problem and I've been running CM10.1 based ROMs and more recently various 4.3 ROMS without this problem for many months. Recently the problem started so I tried completely wiping, reformating of SD card, and re-installations of ROMs to no avail. Took it to a technician who replaced the whole jack-unit but it didn't help. So...I ODINed back to stock 4.1 and problem was fixed! However, any time I install a non-stock ROM, the problem returns, and only re-ODINing back to a stock ROM fixes it. I've tried 4 or so times....
I've been able to flash Custom 4.3 STOCK-BASED ROMS (based on leaks) without any issue as well, so it's not an issue with flasing "custom ROMs" perse, or with Android 4.3...(thank God! at least I can flash Touchwiz 4.3!)
Does anyone have a clue what's going on here?
Do the roms have a volume or sound enhancement mod do you think? If you flash an older one that used to work fine, does it also exhibit the same problem? If not, maybe try using the audio files from the old Rom in the new one? Probably won't help, but you never know...

As far as I know, there were no audio/volume enhancements in the ROMs I tried (CM 10.1.3 and Carbon ROM) only the usual DSP audio app (which I made sure wasn't running). Yeah, those exact ROMs totally worked in the past without a problem, and it wasn't just my sound files that sounded distorted out of the jack it was any sound from any app (system sounds, phone, etc...)
I might try again with a non-stock ROM if/when Android 4.4 becomes stable, otherwise for the time being I'm happy to stick with TW 4.3 (thanks to you!) It's really awesome!

Can't argue with you there! On a new build now and will get it released when I get my computer back from my daughter! So watch out for that in just a bit!
And in case you didnt see it, there is a 4.4 Rom posted. Looks like it was just updated with more functionality too. You should take a look if you haven't yet.

I tried the 4.4 and unfortunately I the same audio distortion problem returned right away. This was coming from being on the TW 4.3 Leak (#2) from over a week straight with the problem. I researched how to lower the audio jack levels in Cyanogen ROMs and found out about this file: "snd_soc_msm_2x" in the system folder
I messed with that file a bit (with a text editor) and managed to get the distortion to go away by lowering ALL of the headphone outputs by 20%. Problem is that then the volume was really too low to enjoy music on. I tried only 10% lower but then the distortion came back. After that I gave up, but convinced that there's something in the deep CM audio settings which my phone no longer likes, Weird.
BTW, I was able to Nandroid back to my TW 4.3 and the problem disappeared. So at least, there's no need to ODIN if I ever want to try again.
there is information about hacking that file here on xda. i think i saw it in an s4 forum but they got their info from the s3. if i remember or find it again ill let you know. but a quick search might find it as well.
