Voodoo Sound Control Plus - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I'm sorry if I'm a little slow on this. But how exactly does voodoo sound control work? I'm running the genocide kernel with module v7 and I also have the Voodoo Plus app which contains v8. How do I benefit the most from voodoo, what settings do I adjust etc...?
When the kernel is installed is the stock produced sound automatically enhanced because of the intergrated module v7?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

I force the volume into analog mode and put it at 0 dbm. It's AWESOME!!!!
I keep the mic input as default (not NEW default) original default, and the rest the way it already was. Sounds great in my car.

Yup same, the headphone amplifier is amazing when listening to music from Pandora on my car through the 3.5mm out jack.

Ok, so before I force the volume into analog mode I need to max out the volume on the stock (android system) player correct?

Nah, it'll by default set that to medium and alter the sound system to analog. Give it a try and you'll notice it's much nicer on 0 dbm.

+1 ... So much better when you do this. Good find bro.

Genocide has v7, plus has a newer version which it loads as a kernel module and overrides v7... plus works on virtually any modular kernel including stock. but genocide would work without plus.
as for the differences between 7 and 8, i dont know, youll have to research that on your own.. i believe voodoo sound is up to 10 now...

Hold it RIGHT there. Not anymore, dowloaded Voodoo Control Plus apk, no custom kernel needed. Thank You, Thank You! Sorry, no Flash Photography allowed! ^^ (P.S. away from sarcasm, really thank you to OP for mentioning it, now I'm enjoying it. Lol.)
P.P.S.: Now that I'm re-hearing my music I hear a difference.. now I'm a tad bit sad that I'd been out of the loop. =( Like a tiny fishy who, instead of going with the flow of the river like the rest of the fish, went against it. =/

Voodoo control app

Ok I am searching from my phone and don't see it so if this is already posted I apologize. Search the market for voodoo control app. This app will give you the ability to add voodoo sound if you are rooted. This is mainly for those that want to remain near stock but would like to use voodoo sound. Or if you want to have the ability to toggle between stock and voodoo sound for whatever reason. I have not used voodoo from a kernel or rom so I don't know if there is a difference in quality. All I know is that it sounds much better than stock. So if you are rooted and don't already have voodoo give it a shot and let us know what you think. If someone would compare this to the kernel version that would be great also.

[Q] EI22 Voodoo sound mod breaks headphones on my epic, any advice?

For some reason, the "voodoo sound hack" present on pretty much all EI22 EXT4 ROMs breaks headphones. Whenever I plug in headphones, all sound goes silent. I must have tried 4 different roms and 3 different kernels. No matter what I do, headphones wont work :-( Anyone know of a good EXT4 based EI22 ROM and/or kernel without the voodoo sound mod? Anyone else have this issue?
PS: Yes, I have tested different headphones, etc (I've tested and all headphones I've tried work perfectly when plugged into my laptop or my girlfriend's LG Ally, btw). I've tried both CWM and the ACS recovery, and I've started with a fresh flash of EC05 with Odin followed up by the stock EI22 update package each time I tried something new. I've tested headphones at each step, and they always work up until I install one of the ROMs. I've also tried removing and deleting certain audio .txt files from the system/etc/audio folder in the ROMs before flashing and that didnt work either. manually deleting voodoo sound control (if present) from the ROM before installing doesn't work either.
**EDIT**
Also, if someone could give me a brief tutorial on how to remove the sound mod from the .zip file of the ROM, that would be great. I'm no developer, but I regularly tinker around with the files in the ROM files to add/remove what i do and dont want, so im not against getting my hands a little dirty to fix this. Thanks.
The voodoo sound mod works with the voodoo control app which can be removed. However, by default when plugging in headphones the app sets the headphone amplifer to -10db which is much softer than normal. Launch the voodoo control app after plugging in your headphones and increase the amp. If your rom didn't come with the voodoo control app preinstalled just get it from the market.

I already tried that and it didnt work. :-( The problem seems to be rooted in the hack itself, not the voodoo control app.
Like I said, I've literally tried everything i can think of... thanks for replying, tho.
Easiest thing to do is flash a ROM without Voodoo.
Precisely what i've been looking for! Can you suggest any good EI22 EXT4-based ROMs without the sound hack? cuz i cant find any, and i've googled, searched everywhere..

Clean GB does not have Voodoo sound but has the rocker mod for silent/vibrate options. You said it is Voodoo breaking oyur headphones right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344074
That is correct. But cleanGB is RFS only, isn't it? I want a ROM that's EXT4 based
Not sure about Clean GB, but if it is RFS then flash the Samurai kernel on top of that (or any kernel not adding voodoo sound) and then flash rfs2ext4.zip.
Alright! Thanks man!
I hope that gets those headphones working for you.
Apparently the samurai kernel natively supports voodoo sound too, cuz im running a stock ei22 rom converted to ext4, with samurai 2.0.4+ added, and headphones STILL wont work...
Just so you know, you don't have to change roms, just kernels to disable voodoo sound.
I tried that, and it still wouldn't work. Thanks tho.

[Q] Having a bit trouble with sound & kernels

Hello, guys. I guess you could call me somewhat a noob, since I got my Galaxy Nexus just three days ago. I had a SGS2, Motorola ATRIX and a few HTC devices before, so I'm not THAT much of a noob, but with this device, I'm a starter.
When I had the HTC's, all kernels (which were not so many) were substantially different from each other. On the ATRIX, there was only one famous and good, so... it doesn't count. On the S2, there were so many, I decided I'd better go with MIUI and seal the deal.
On the Galaxy Nexus, I have AOKP, right now, and am using franco's latest kernel (milestone-4).
The only troubles I am having is with the earpiece. During calls, I can hardly hear the person at the other end if I'm in a crowded area - problem I never encountered before on any of my previous devices. I see most kernels (if not all of them) have ColorControl and SoundControl, but I must pay for the kernel developer's app in order to be able to control those... and I might do that.
But, until I do so, please help me out. Which kernel is the best? I mean, I wouldn't really wanna spend money on franco's app, for example, to find out later that GLaDOS is better; besides, I'm not really much of an app-buyer, so-to-say. So I really want this decision to be a good one, lol.
Besides, there's one factor that's kind of making me wonder... The earpiece volume shouldn't be this low, and the necessity of buying the dev app in order to be able to increase it shouldn't really exist. I mean, this is such a basic thing... Or perhaps I'm wrong.
I want to ask : did YOU have to increase the stock volume (not by pressing the volume buttons, of course)? And if you did, how did you do it? I'd like to try a free app for the time being...
And, secondly : what kernel would you suggest?
-----
I'm really sorry for being such a noob right now, but given the short time I had since I have the GN, I didn't really get to scout all of the threads and such... and I kind of want a very quick answer, so that's why I'm daring to ask. Plus, my exams just finished, so I'll have more time to chime in the dev topics, but still...
Try Volume+ to amplify your headset speaker. There is a free version. If this doesn't work you can download ANY kernel app and use it on basically ANY kernel since they all use the same implementation of the mods. It isn't necessary for me but it is nice to have it a little louder.
If you don't want to use the apps you can learn how to do it manually as they all have the option of editing settings through terminal I believe.

I tried Volume+ (free). I even increased the Maximum Volume by +4, but I notice NO DIFFERENCE at all . Tried it on Speaker, Headset and Bluetooth... none of them do ANYTHING :/
I tried this on my EVO 3D in the past - just out of curiosity. It didn't work then, neither. I kind of expected it to not work now, as well...

So, if Volume+ doesn't do anything, franco's app or GLaDOS's app won't do anything, as well, right? :/
-----
I was using franco's kernel on AOKP until now and the color multipliers from Settings - ROM Control - Performance didn't do ANYTHING. The colors were not changing as I adjusted the gauges.
I just flashed CMPlus and the color settings from Performance DO work - although they don't help my purple-gray tint when the screen brightness is low... but that makes me think that franco may have blocked the kernel in such way that only with his app you can change those - not through the embedded settings.
Anyway, Volume+ didn't do a thing with this kernel, neither. Why the hell? Is the earpiece speaker already set to the maximum volume? Cause if it is, it really sucks. The app either isn't doing anything, or the earpiece speaker is already at maximum - which seems kind of retarded, to be honest, since I must drop calls if I'm crossing the street, for example (`cause I wouldn't hear the person at the other end)...

Oh... I thought by "both all same the implementation of sound control" you meant that Volume+ uses the same method as franco's app... And since Volume+ didn't do anything, it was fair to assume that neither would franco's app...
Wrong, they will.
But to clarify:
Volume control mods from the kernels only adjust headset volume. FYI.
Secondly:
Try Lean Kernel.
Not only do I personally love it...
But Jake makes Lean Tweaks.
Which you edit through terminal.
(Flash Kernel. Flash Lean Tweaks. Open Terminal Emulator: Su (enter) lt (enter) and the options will appear).
These tweaks include the sound mods.

Guess I'll have to give that a try, once my phone charges up...! Thank you!
-----
For the record, last night, my phone's battery dropped from ~22% to 8% over 9 hours. 2G/3G auto (full 3G coverage, though), Wi-Fi off, screen off. The phone WAS in deep sleep, because CPU Spy told me that. That was with franco's kernel.
I'm using CMPlus for the time being, but I'll try Lean in a couple of hours. I hope it works :-S
Erm... mind dropping me a link to the kernel thread? I can't find it here, on XDA - and it is not listed on the ROM/kernel/everything thread, neither...
Oh, nevermind, I should have Google searched, not XDA searched

Changed the value from 0 to 3 (in volume_boost) and I notice no difference with the speaker OR the earpiece... Guess I'll just have to try LeanKernel, maybe this kernel I'm using isn't really that great when it comes to sound control

They may have implemented the same implementation in different ways If you want one that FOR SURE LIKE 100% TOTALLY works, use GLaDOS and the respective app. The author of GLaDOS is the one who originally implemented sound control and is the one that others use.

Hmm, I see.
I'm using LeanKernel (v3.9, stable) for the moment, with LeanTweaks. I enabled Highest Sound Boost, but am not noticing any improvement in earpiece volume :/
I'm beginning to be very sceptical about this... whether it would work with GLaDOS's app :/

By the way... Would GLaDOS's app work with other kernels, as well? Or it is SPECIFICALLY ONLY for that kernel?
I remember you said something that it would work with others, too... I can't load the previous page to check, though :/

If any of them are going to work it is GLaDOS since the author is the one who actually coded the sound control in. I don't know how Franco/Lean Kernel work, but I know for a fact that GLaDOS and similar (CMPlus) will work. If they don't, you might need an exchange.

Guess I'll just have to create a secondary XDA account and ask in the GLaDOS thread about that . Just so I don't get rocks thrown at me on THIS account, lol.

One concern: during the initial boot, I waited about 5 minutes until I decided I'd reflash it. But, I didn't reflash it, because the moment I hit the power button, the home screen showed up.

You're dandy welcome.
Also of extremely minor concern: I think it flashed with both the LG Alarm/Clock and the AOSP style Clock. Woo.
EDIT: Speaking of which, if I try to edit either of the two alarms that are set as default in Clock, it crashes.
I am able to create new alarms though. ... Hope they work...
EDIT: That problem magically disappeared. Maybe I'll come back with some useful observations soon. Thanks.

Has anyone tried the viper4android effects? I thought I had it working the other night, but now I can't tell the difference with it on or off. I have been playing around with all the sound mods I can find and can't seem to get one with a noticeable difference. Either my LGOG came with great stock sound or I am doing something wrong. Any ideas?

Any of those kernels past 1.22 boots slow for me. 1.23 is where they get OC'd.
And insofar as the system app showing up when I didn't wipe system, that makes sense.

ihitcows - Let me know if you test out the sound mod. Also, are you experiencing any call problems? It might be because I use Google Voice, but my wife will call me and her phone will ring for 30 seconds and go to my GV VM and it won't even ring on my phone.

Sound mod confirmed working on speaker, headset and Bluetooth.
Though the effects are, generally, so slight on the speaker it's difficult to tell. But it does work.

Thanks, but is this sound mod better than AC!D or Beats? Like I said, I haven't noticed that much of a difference with any of them. I am still trying a couple of others, but I don't want to get rid of it if everyone likes it.

All righty. Since I was prompted to update the drivers for VIPER, and did, the headset hasn't worked. Haven't tried speaker and BT.
So, I'm gonna ditch it. But hey, it's sound. Hard to be more subjective than that!
All of the adjustments, for me, on both Beats and AC!D work, with one exception: the EQ on AC!D's Noozxoide. But I really dig its room-size adjustment.
And, dev, I appreciate the dark-themed Play Music, but I cant get it to show any content. Tried clearing data and rebooting and resyncing.

1. I think I messed up something with v4a and believe I can fix it. Fixed or new sound mod will be in the next update.
2. My player loads everything from my internal storage. It is not the same as Google play music, it is just a plain old school android music player with an updated theme. If you use Google play music you will need to download it.
I will be working on this more tomorrow and will hopefully have 1.1 tomorrow night maybe.

I'll give it a shot on the next build. Or whatever's out by the weekend. I got a stable setup I revert too but like trying new things....just need a driver for them business days.

Darndest thing just happened:
Seeing as how I still had the Alarm/Clock, etc., and notification bar and menu I had from LifeLess, I decided to reflash this ROM after wiping system. So,
I wipe data, dalvik/cache, and system, and boot into a several-minute long LG logo.
Better yet, my backup of this ROM nor of LifeLess would boot. Same thing.
... This may very well having to do with something outside the ROM that I've done. Just thought I'd mention.
EDIT: Formatted data, we're good.
Flashed it without Liberty kernel; initial boot was normal this time.
if you use evos kernel you can use faux sound to adjust sound settings and it works really well

Installed Noozxoide how to use it?

I just recently installed the zip for Noozxoide, and it has made my sound incredibly loud, is there anyway I can adjust these settings? Thanks
Hi, I wanted to know if anyone knows why?
When I use the Noozxoide with any other Rom other than the JellyBomb rom, it absolutely does nothing to increase my sound, but when I used it with in the JellyBomb rom, holy batman did it boost my built-in speaker sound by like 200% easily. It was super loud, louder than any phone I've ever had!
Unfortunately, I am not a big of the Jellybomb rom and prefer Lab Rats, so if someone who knows what JellyBomb rom has in it that makes the Noozxoide work while all others don't, it'll be highly appreciated!
Thank you!

P.S. To the guy that started the post. When you open up the app, and say you want to increase your Built-in Audio, you click on it and it'll open settings for it. There are different settings that allow you to set it up as low, moderate, strong, very.strong, etc... plus also the equalizer settings. Just play around with it and you can adjust it so it's not on full blast like I want mine to be!

Maybe a different kernel? I know when I use labrats I use saber kernel and I get the boost.

Yep tried the Saber v25 kernel yesterday, as well as the Persus v36.3 which the same one that the JellyBomb rom uses, but still absolutely no sound boost, as a matter of fact the sound is ridiculously low, and the only way I get a bit of boost is with the Speaker Booster app from the market. I thought maybe I blew out my speakers or something, but then I reflashed the new version of JellyBomb and I still got that awesome sound boost from the Noozxoide app! I think that maybe the JellyBomb rom has some other kind of system app or some kind of script or mod that's giving it that boost! So I will compare all the files in both rom's zip and see if I find something JellyBomb has that the Lab Rats doesn't and then add to the Lab Rats to see if I can emulate that boost. Or maybe I'll first ask the jellyBomb's dev about it.
