Trident Case Screen Protector installation tips - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just purchased this case after dealing with a couple of the cheaper plastic cases out there. I am wondering if the screen protector that came with it uses a water install or not. This one seems thick and durable like the official SE screen protector, I just don't want to ruin this one. I have done a number of "wet" installs with little to no problem and happy with the results. Any tips to warn off the dreaded "Boiling Bubbles."

I think it's better than the stock one. Feels more cushioned to me. Just make sure you are dust free and clean the screen. No bubbles, no hassle.

Cool. Just what I needed to know.

Atrix screen protector

I've been considering getting a screen protector for a while now. The problem I have is my hands sweat very badly (gross I know) and then the touch screen on my phone goes crazy from the water on the screen. I have never had this problem with any phone I've had before now. I think it is because the Atrix touch screen is more sensitive than any other phone I've had. I was wondering if a screen protector would fix this problem and what some good brands were to try. Thanks

You should always have a screen protector on any smart device you care about. One grain of sand in your pocket can ruin your screen (and your day). That said....
A screen protector will likely NOT fix your problem, as water (sweat) registers as a capacative touch. For a screen protector to "fix" the registration of sweat, it would have to also "fix" the registration of a desired capacitive touch (finger, stylus, or otherwise).
The only manner in which a screen protector could help is if you could find a very hydrophobic one (the repells and beads water), though you would still need to soak up that water with your shirt or a handkerchief or something. I'm not sure they even sell these. Google is your friend, here. Use keywords hydrophobic and/or water-repellent. Good luck, my friend, and let us know if you find anything interesting!

I tried few of a kind and decided to go with Otterbox Defender case which has a transparent front panel.
Refurbished case is about $20-25 and as good as a new one.
No need for screen protector. No mess with applying one...
What if I put on an average screen protector and then sprayed it with some form of water repellent?

Water repellent spray wouldn't work because the screen protectors are vinyl or polyurethane and are not absorbent. Those hydrophobic sprays only work with an absorbent material like cloth or real leather.
Use car wax, something like the rain-x.

That's what I was talking about. It works on car windshields so it should work on a screen protector right?

I have to disagree with the statement that you have to have a screen protector, we have gorilla glass! I have never had a protector and my screen looks great! As for this situation, a protector that has a little rubberized feel might work well. I would read reviews on Amazon and buy the one that people complain the most about it sticking!

FWIW, my wife has been w/o a screen protector since April and I've been with / without one on and off since June.
Still not a single scratch on either phone, however, without one the screen is too smooth, so I'm thinking of going back installing one.
Hope this helps...
I went without a screen protector for a few months. I took the phone outside and noticed TONS of very fine scratches. You could only see them in direct sunlight, but it bothered me enough that I got a screen protector shortly thereafter.
I was thinking to buy a Vikuiti ADQC27. Has anyone tried it?
Thanks
I have to second the rec for the Otterbox Defender case. Having the screen protector built in is pretty awesome and in my experience, it has withstood all kind of liquidy stuff on it and plenty of goopy stuff as well. Like those technical terms?
It hasn't hampered my touch screen through various roms with various sensitivities and my glowing review hasn't even hit all the protection benefits it gives.
Best part? I got mine for about $10 'used' on ebay and while the silicone part was a little loose, a quick email to Otterbox got me a free placement in the mail without any hassle.
I haven't used one myself, but if they make one for the Atrix and if it's what you are really looking for, Zagg stuff has made some of my friends really happy.
You should look into a Matte one where is almost smudge free
altho it looks slightly foggy and scratch easily, but its worth it
make sure u get like a few togehter on ebay so you have backup ones

Can you suggest any brand? Something like the GreatShield Ultra Anti-Glare (Matte)?
I have one on mine, steinheil (SGP), while the protector gets scratched its better than the screen getting scratched.
Can't really tell the SGP ultra crystal protector is on the screen either, other than the few scratches that are on the protector now. Comes with 2 in a package if you get them.
They have an oleophobic one that is suppose to be oil resistant, maybe that one might be ideal? The ultra fine is their matted one.
If you look at the product on their webpage the 'Select a Color' changes the type of protector they have (took me a min to find the different versions they had when I looked again).
Last while the corning glass is tough, with a vickers hardness of 622kgf/mm2 in the unstrengthened and 701 in the strengthened stuff is pretty impressive.
Spec sheet for the glass can be found from corning's site using a google search, made me curious to check it.
While pretty hard something as simple and common as sand can scratch it which has a vickers hardness of about 1000....
Keys, lighters and the like are unlikely to scratch it though as unless its hardened tool steel its hardness will likely be below 650, an edge on a tungsten ring could probably do the trick though.
Anyhow I keep one on my phone, though maybe not really necessary I'd rather have a scratched screen protector than see the glass get scratched.

Zagg and Skinomi are quite nice. I like the Skinomi on my tablet maybe even a bit better than the Zagg on the Atrix, but the difference is very minimal. I'd say the Skinomi may slide slightly better than the Zagg, but you're splitting hairs.
I agree with BeakHill. SGP is great except they scratch easier than Zagg. The Ultra crystal is so clear that they don't even have a cut out for the front camera. The Ultra fine is their matte model and it is good and smooth, the crystal is nicer IMO..
The problem with SGP is they spoil you to the other brands, and they are more expensive.

Xtremeguard Full Body Protection

Hey guys, if you guys are looking for a cheap full body film protection like zagg check out xtremeguard its $5 on amazon + free shipping no tax (gotta love amazon).
I've been through a couple of these full body protections on various devices: zagg, bodyguardz, skinomi, and xtremeguard. They are all virtually the same, the rubbery kind. I actually just order these and should be on its way soon. From what I remember it's not orange peel.. it only gets that "peel" look when you squeegy too hard or stretch the film.
I assume it won't be as nice as ghost armor, but it's only $5 compares to $30 + tax... and honestly, my phone is white and I prefer the clear look.. and i bet many others would too.
If you don't like the rubber feel screen protector, feel free to leave that off and apply your preferred protection (magnum)
you said its not as nice as the GA, but my question to you is that does it stick well like GA? im thinking of trying out your product since im using a white SG2 as well but can you give us your user input after using it? is it like a smooth surface or carbon like GA?
thanks,

It's the same as the other products i mentioned... Like zagg. it's a smooth surface... Not carbon because well it's not carbon designed. Not sure how else to describe it, if you seen or used zagg before then yeah.
Adhesion sticks well. I haven't received it yet for the gs2 but if it's like how it was for other devices. It's a good cheap product. Other users have mentioned it somewhere

It does add a tiny bit of a rubbery feel but I've had no issues at all typing / using the touchscreen. I've had mine on here over a month and it still looks new. The only issue is with the textured battery door. The skin leaves little bubbles because of it. I left it on just for the added protection. I'm also using a tpu case and feel safer having an extra barrier between it and the phone ( dust particles can scratch up a phone pretty bad when they get between the skin and the phone) .

Wow this thing isn't bad at all, xtremeguard really did well on this one.
each film provided goes all the way to the edges.. The screen i actually had to trim a part or two because i wasn't able to place it on perfectly but no big deal at all. the rubbery feel on the screen isn't bad at all. It actually feels better than the cheap plain screen protectors that leaves you grease smudges. This actually prevents that quite a bit. i have the white gs2 so mine sticks on my back really well.
Complaint is that it left the top corners pretty exposed. But i just cut a couple strips from the left over film and placed them on.
I'll add some pictures.. If it is even visible lol
The film thickness isn't bad, it makes the screen about the same height as the surrounding bezel.
I have yet to put on my flex d3o case but i know that'll give the fit problems... Probably have to get a tpu case
When i say trim... It's like a very very small like .5mm strip. I assume it's a perfect fit on the screen thus if you can't put it on perfectly expect some lifts

ebay currently has it for $2.49 shipped. i bought just the screen protector a while ago, and i wasn't too fond of that wet install, but did manage to stick it on. the fitment is kinda poor, although i did trim a little bit of here and there, but it still didn't quite fit perfect. i emailed the vendor and they sent me a new one pretty fast, but i didn't bother to try it again. i bought two cheap ones from amazon recently and the fitment was a little bit smaller than the screen, but at least it wouldn't bubble up with my d30 case on

wow nice find, but yeah wet installs are a pain in the butt! But if done correctly, it ends up pretty nice.
I can guess why the fitment might be off and people should take note especially for the screen... they made the screen a very tight fit and when peeling off the film make sure not to stretch it! once it's stretched, it doesn't go back to its original form right away.
tips on wet install:
-bowl of your solution (soap plus water) better than using a spray
-don't use too much solution, just enough so you can easily take on and off the film, but not to the point where its all slippery
-steamy room (keeps dust down)
-alcohol wipes, don't bother drying
-for screen avoid the bubbles! like most protectors the bubbles will go away, but for this material... when it goes away it, it creates that orange peel effect in that small area.. otherwise its a smooth surface.
-do not squeegee too hard, this causes it to stretch.. use the cloth to soak up the water being squeezed out. I've heard people use the squeegee and the cloth together... haven't done it myself.
-wait until one film fully stays down before applying the next piece... total of 6 easy pieces.
If you don't like the screen protector.. I know there are quite a few who doesn't like the invisible armor rubber feel, you can just use another screen protector
HOWEVER, i recommend using the full body part though. It's really good stuff for those who don't want to put out money for zagg or ghost armor. $2.50 you can't go wrong with that lol.
@mmakoto, you should try out the full body part, I've used this material for every phone i have and it prevents it from the minimal scratches you get from hard cases.. leaving the phone on the table or hard surfaces... keys, low drops.. you get the gist.. It keeps the phone having that smooth slick feel once removed. Oh and it's thinner than zagg. It usually keeps my resale value for the phone high.. like $50 over the average.. thats some good ROI.
D3O FLEX fitment: the flex is a bit looser than the 2 tone ones.. i have both but i doubt the 2 tone one would do well with this.. don't want to risk it
It is able to conform around the phone with the protection on nicely.. If you know about the d3o case... it covers right above the bezel area.. so my screen which had minimal amount of screen protector resting on the bottom right bezel area is barely being lifted (this is user application fault) I can press the screen back down easily.. i will have to trim that area just a tad.
NOTE: the other parts of the screen that i was able to perfectly apply my screen protector (not on the bezel) it fits wonderfully.
TL;DR: Cheap alternative to full body protection (ZAGG). Use a different screen protector if you don't like the rubber feel (not that rubbery though). D3O flex case fits well over it. TPU would probably be a better choice (more room for error)
EDIT no pictures yet... I don't have another camera.. gonna have to wait for the lady to come back from cheating on me in vegas (jk).
I installed this last night. I only did the edges and the battery door since I don't use a screen protector anyway. The back door looks like it has a lot of porosity right now and not sure if that'll go away. The edges work well though I didn't place them that great. It works though. I bought an extra set too. Really cheap!
I may end up doing ghost armor in the near future as this was most to see how I like this style.

Thinking of getting one, for the ones that still have it on how it holding?
Like most full body ones. it gets old and discolored. It held on really well but it started making my white phone look dirty so i just switch it out. It's cheap so i don't mind. Just make sure the corners are down well. I kept taking mine in and out of my case and it started to make the corners peel.

Quality of Built in Screen Protector on Otter Box Defender?

Hey everyone!
One of the cases that I'm considering for my GS3 is the Otter Box Defender. I know that it has a built in screen protector, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the quality of the built in screen protector is like? ie, clear, glossy, matte, scratch and fingerprint resistant, absolute crap, etc...? Does anyone have the Defender and use a different screen protector with it? The more information, the better. Thanks!
The feel of it as they have always been more like a clear glossier plastic. Its not Matte or smudge proof thats for sure. Is it the best screen protector out? Most certainly not, but its not really meant to be removed but doesnt mean you can rip it off cause i have done so with other phones I had. Mostly because I have always been a big supporter and user of the ZAGG Protectors which in my opinion are the best in terms of quality and build. But you really dont want to have a screen protector on and then use the otterbox with the added screen protector. Two to me is too many and can cause some interference with touch controls. I know there is prolly a million people on here that will say otherwise and they have done it without issues just my honest opinion when i had one on phone then used otterbox case with attached protector as well I hated it. The touch for me was way off. But if you dont end up liking it just get you a good screen protector and then when you buy the defender just pop off the one that comes with it. No worries.
I just got the Defender last week for GS3 and Love it! Its an amazing case and love the holster. I always end up buying one of these cases for my phones cause they just LAST.
Cheers!:highfive:
Case is good but the screen protector makes everything pixilated. Really hard to get past for me. So I tore out the screen protector and had a zagg hd put on. Works out well.

It, sux it makes the screen look grainy, i sold it and got the commuter instead, i just bought the defender because the screen protector, and since it sux i rather have the bit slimmer commuter.
I love the commuter btw.
I took the screen protector out also. Don't let that be what steers you away from the defender. The case is awesome, the product support is awesome. I keep thinking about getting a stick on protector but haven't yet. I use the holster so the screen is protected by that most of the time. I have scratched and scuffed the outer rubber of the case however. I emailed otter support asking if I could buy replacement outers in the future and explained that I scratched the case... No defect of the product. They asked for pictures and the next thing I know I have an invoice in my email... They are sending me a whole new replacement! You can't beat that service.
Got the Black Defender and the screen protector is utter crap. Invested in a ZAGG HD and never looked back.
The quality of the built-in screen on the Defender made everything look so blurry and pixelated.

Disagree - it's not good protection, in fact is bad for it.
Buddy of mine had a defender for his phone before. Over time dust, grit and what have you worked it's way in between the otter screen guard and the screen itself. Then everytime you touch it has the same effect as rubbing sandpaper on your screen. His got murdered from it.
You need a screen protector that adheres to the screen itself to prevent fine grains of dust, dirt, sand or what have you from turning it into a piece of sandpaper every time you touch it.
After seeing the destruction wrought on his screen, was in the defender from day one, and now owning a defender myself, I fully understand why the most common mod to the case is to take an Xacto knife and cut the screen guard out.
Do that and use a quality shield on the screen, you will be very happy you did.
^ I usually take my case off every other week to clean it, and I was surprised to see that barly any dust got in at all, the only places I saw was around the top where the little hole is at and around the camera/flash /speaker área , maybe his case was defective? Over all I'm impressed to see how clean my phone is every time I take off the case.

LG Nitro HD Ballistic Hard Core (HC) case

Received this case in the mail and testing it out. So far, it makes the phone bulky but I don't mind since it has a belt clip and holster to carry it. Protection is out of this world. It has an optional silicone shell outside of the case for added security but holster can be used with or without it. 5 layers of protection, integrated screen protector and a kickstand built into the back of the case. Normally $50, but can be found on amazon for $13-$15. Overall an amazing case and well worth every penny spent. Very sturdy as well as accessible buttons and ports through the case. I would recommend this case for all LG Nitro users. Pics posted soon. Any questions, feel free to ask.

You got it right that this case is an absolute beast! I've had it since around January or February 2012; don't know why I never thought of writing a review for it... but I digress.
I want to throw in some things which I do that I find really works for me. I got tired of not seeing the full beauty of the HD display; because, lets face it, the plastic screen protector really detracts from the display quality. The fact that little dust particles and pocket lint would get caught up behind that same plastic screen protector and stick out like a sore thumb also got on my nerves terribly. My resolution to these problems: I bought a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, another $12-13 from Amazon, and installed it onto the phone. Then, I carefully removed the plastic cover from the Ballistic case and put the phone/case back together. You still retain the awesome protection of the Ballistic case with the stunning beauty of the Nitro's 720p HD display. An added bonus is that you will never have to take the case apart again to clean that one stupid speck that somehow got lodged between the screen and the screen protector 20 minutes after you took it apart and cleaned it!
That is true, I haven't had anything get under the protector yet but it does slightly degrade the quality of the screen. It might be worth trying it out. But I am loving this case. Its my second ballistic case and I'll never buy another brand of case for any phone. Thanks for the added input and work around.

yeah i bought this case 2 days after i bought my phone, great case but i had to use a knife and carve out around the microphone hole cuz they didn't make it big enough, this also actually helped the microphone cover to stay on better when not being used
i also cut the screen protector out of it cuz i use replacable ones that give better vision of the screen.

Ballistic Soft Gel - thinner alternative to Hard Case
I have the Ballistic Soft Gel case
http://www.amazon.com/Nitro-Ballist...1367820799&sr=1-6&keywords=ballistic+lg+nitro
that does not have the screen protector or removable extra outer cushion. It's slightly thinner, with hefty rubber cushions at the corners and a hard plastic back. The Soft Gel case is easier to remove than the Hard Case. The rubber corner cushions protrude above the screen and protect the front of the phone from any "incoming" flat surfaces. like a floor.
It has protected my phone through a few nasty drops, and yet the touch screen is open and directly accessible (and unprotected).
This case sucked. I tried three and on all of them the opening which was frustrating to open completely would leak dust in so much. This caused me to open up the case once a day to clean the device causing the opening mechanism to be even more broken. The screen protector scratched easily and the gap between it and the screen was ridiculously big. Get the soft gel ballistic. That plus zagg screen protector is the best option for this device!

I had the same issued with mine as well. Before putting it inside the Ballistic, I had applied an Xtremeguard screen protector. Since the space between the Ballistic screen cover and the phone screen was not constant, it looked as if there was water on my screen because the Ballistic screen was touching the Xtremeguard in some places but not others. Removing the Xtremeguard solved this issue. I have to open my Ballistic to clear out the dust every two weeks.

Screen protectors?

Is there any company out there that makes screen protectors like SPG? Currently I have the Verizon screen protector with the diztronic tpu case and it's already peeling. I know Skinomi makes one but it's a wet application and I really don't like the feel of it. I know Skinomi has a sticky feeling to it like Zagg when you glide your finger on the screen. I have searched across the Web. Seems like no love for the Maxx.

No, Skinomi is the best protector. Zagg is a piece of crap! I have used multiple Skinomi protectors (never the whole body ones) and loved all of them. I have the Skinomi on my MAXX right now and my fingers glide like on polished glass. You have to be in a dust-free environment and have an assistant help spray your fingers with the applicator. There is a science to doing it right. Also the lifetime warranty is awesome.

I agree with skinomi being on top, still have a skinomi on my original droid razr maxx for almost 2 years and you cant barely tell its on there.
I bought a skinomi and I think it sucks. When I think screen protector I think of something hard that can not be scratched. These "tech skins" are some kind of soft gel. I actually gouged it with my fingernail while swiping.
I use the xtremeguard. Feels rubbery and not as durable as I expected. I scratched it intentionally using my fingernails and it failed me.

using skinomi.. it is a soft type material but protects well.. and the items it comes with just makes it easy to install. if you gauge it with any small scratches or even your fingernail.. dont worry about it, it heals itself back.
Here's a follow up on the verizon anti glare 3 pack. I'm still on my first one. It's got quite a few tiny marks but not visible when display is on.
Once in a while my defender or Trident cyclops cases will make the edge bubble ever so slightly but no dust has accumulated and upon removal of cases with built in screen protectors it goes away.

So has anyone found any glass screen protectors for the Droid Maxx? Phone's been out for a while and I still can't find any sellers..
nitro glass doesn't make one yet... im South New Jersey..and our mall has a kiosk called ClearCoat... pretty sick screen protector...
Another +1 for Skinomi. I am currently using it. Application was a cinch. And they have an application video to aid. It is applied and I put a Otter box on top. Feels and looks great. Not as stick or gelly as I expected. Perfect.
Friend still insists best buy sold tempered glass screen last year. Still searching.

Long story short, my mother just got this phone a few days ago and I know the amount of abuse she inflicts on her phones. She normally just throws it into her purse with all the other stuff. I'm trying to find a protector that can handle whatever may hit the screen. I've used Skinomi and like them but I've used a tempered glass protector and I like those a lot more. Do any of you have a recommendation for what type to get?
P.S. I already have found her a case, so the body of the phone should be safe.

I haven't seen any of those for the Ultra series yet. I have a Skinomi, and have had it on the phone for 5 months now - it's just fine. Occasionally the case will start to peel the edge a bit but it's always easy to get it to adhere back down. In fact, I haven't seen that happen in weeks.
So yesterday I removed my anti glare screen protector (verizon 3 pack) because it was due for a change. The screen was so hard to see, very shiny and reflective, but it did look slightly clearer.
But I became weary and installed another one. Lol.
Anyone have clear full body armor?
