[Q] Mobile internet breaking off during tethering - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a really annoying problem with the Desire and hope that somebody is out there who has solved this problem already and is willing to share the solution.
I have a Desire Bravo which I used to provide internet to my desktop PC via USB tethering. But since a month or so, the phone's mobile internet (o2 Germany) goes into some sort of sleep mode when I am not actively using it on the PHONE or have constant data stream to the PC. For instance, while reading the web on the PC, I will have to grab the phone occasionally and call a web site there so that I can access the internet again on the PC. As soon as I called a web site, a download or the like on the PC works again. It must be some sort of sleep mode but I have no idea which setting it could be. I am not completely clear when this happens as sometimes it keeps awake for a good time but sometimes it interrupts very quickly.
I already have flashed a new radio 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 and also the latest stable release of LeeDroid 3.0.8.2 as I thought it might be the OS. But not improvement.
It is also not the SIM / carrier as it works without this problem if I use the same SIM in an internet USB stick.
Is there some sort of user data I could try to delete?
Or could the Windows drivers (on win 7 64 bit) be the problem?
Or any other suggestions?
I have searched the web for days and did find entries but the problem is always slightly different...
Thanks a mil for any insights!
Cheers,
frotty

Maybe an easier question first: do you guys get a stable connection over a prolonged period of time when using the Desire as a mobile internet modem via tethering?
The HDSPA signal is strong and the phone is not moving.
(Now, I tried newer HTC sync drivers (uninstall, new install) - no improvement.
I tried a wipe / factory reset and started without microSD, thus no user data - no improvement.
I tried it on a different Win 7 PC - no difference.
So far I only tried HTC stock ROM-based ROMs. Would it be worthwhile to try one of the open source ROMs?
Or might it be really a carrier issue? It just started to do this breaking off a month ago... but then again, with a USB internet stick the SIM gives a rather stable connection.)

Opera crashes and Internet connection probs with TP2

Hi all,
I am loving my TP2 but have a couple of annoying issues. anyone else experiencing the same...?
Firstly Opera keeps crashing. Tends to happen when trying to log in to a site. www.facebook.com mobile site is fine but crashes if I try to log in to the full site. I downloaded Opera 9.7beta and it does the same on that one too.
Also my internet connection keeps dropping. If downloading emails it might download the headers then lose the connection. Sometimes pressing send/receive gets it back online but othertimes it wont connect again until I go in to comm manager and turn the phone radio off then back on.
Frustrating problems that I didn't expect from a brand new device.
Never tried logging into the full site. I tried it right now but it I can't even input my username. So I gave up. Using the mobile site is just as good. I don't think it can handle the full site anyway.
I have never lost my connection in a good reception area. It could be your area or your carrier that has a weak reception. Try in a different area or try the phone using another network or carrier. Ask a friend to help you that uses a different network.
Make sure they are ok with you using data tho.
I had the same problem when logging on full Facebook site on my old Kaiser with Opera 9b1, it was crashing.
But on my TP2 using the included Opera, its working quite good without crashing.
Maybe you installed another sofware that uses all the memory ? just a random guess.
Looks like the HTC built in T-Mobile settings could be the cause.
The built in settings have a Proxy Server setting that I couldnt remove so I set up a new connection using:
general.t-mobile.uk
user
pass
And did not set up a static IP address. It seems to be stabler in the 20 mins I have used it and I can now log in using the WM Facebook program as previously it would not let me log in.
Hope that helps someone.
I'm back again for some help!
I have managed to get Facebook working and Opera no longer crashes using the new data settings I entered but I am still losing my data connection.
When I lose it I get the "Cannnot connect for an unknown reason" pop up box. If I clear it I can occassionally get the connection to then activate but usually I am having to cycle the phone radio within Comm Manager before it will go online. This is really annoying as if the box comes up it won't check for email till I OK the message and get the data connection working again.
I am using a T-Mob sim that worked fine in my Tytn II and checked all settings but all seems ok.
Could it be a faulty radio that keeps kicking me offline? Calls seem ok. I have dropped a few but have also had 30 min + calls so seems to be specific to data.

I had the same problem when i first got mine had to do 2 hard resets before it went away, after it returned again i just started using the energy rom and never looked back
Opera 9.7 beta
I tried installing the new Opera beta on the unlocked/unbranded Touch Pro 2 it either doesn't start getting stuck at the splash screen or it starts and then crashes after a click or two. I am unable to use it at all. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Error browsing the internet with GPRS

I recently bought a new HTC s620(EXCA 100) phone with Windows Mobile 5.0. I have subscribed for internet thru a local GPRS carrier, everything works fine except my internet access. Initially everytime i access a web site (using IE) it works for about 4 mins max then gives a time out. It has worsened with time now i only browse for 30 secs and it times out.
I have tried:
An alternative browser (Skyfire) and this as well times out from time to time, so i have eliminated that the browser has the fault. My common sites are m.facebook.com and mobile.yahoo.com, which are secure site, but i even get the issue with non-secure sites.
A hard reset on the phone which has proved futile in rectifying the problem.
Reconfiguring the internet settings with my GPRS provider
I have also tried my sim card in another phone, this sim card worked to browse online with no issues. Then after hooked my phone onto my PC at work and browsed via the company’s LAN, I had no problem there either.
I can only conclude that my phone has the problem.
The errors I constantly get are:
- Alert..The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later.
- Error.. Cannot connect. Verify you have network coverage and try again.
Thanx in advance… awaiting ur assistance.

You can try to update your rom to a more recent version.
Having the same problem here...
My Dash just started having the dame problem recently. And it's driving me bananas! I have tried everything EXCEPT flashing the Rom. I"m trying to not have to flash the Rom because it's always a major pain in the ass to do it...i always get the 3% error and get stuck in the loop of all the fixes, which without fail, DON'T work.
Anyway, does anyone have a work around for this that doesn't require flashing the Rom?
I had the same problem too with my Dash. What I did was go to my service provider's website and copy the settings for my phone. By default, using the Connection Setup of the Dash would configure the GPRS as it were inserted a postpaid SIM. Since I am on a prepaid service SIM, I had to manually change some of the access points (example: from www to http) as instructed by my provider's website. After that I had no problems connecting through either Internet Explorer or Opera Mini 5.

[Q[ Anyway to pull WiFi Driver from 2.2.1 and replace 2.3.3

Hey guys
As some may or may not be aware i cant and a few select others can not use WiFi on any custome/stock 2.3.3 rom.
My issue is not with connecting to a router, its with data not being pulled through to the handset, so the handset basically tells me that it cant display a webpage or access the market.
If i use any 2.2.1 rom, stock or custom it works absolutely perfect.
So it got me thinking is it a WiFi driver issue? and if so would it be possible to pull the driver out of a 2.2.1 rom to replace the driver within the 2.3.3 rom?
Gingerbread is not a necessity for me i just want it as an option.
as for HTC they are utterly useless and all they offer is a repair when clearly its a software issue
So is there a way to do this?
i dont think it is possible because drivers are usually built when the kernel is built so swapping one from another rom i doubt will not work..

My Problem SOLVED by flashing LeeDroid 3.0.3. Check That
I've been on the phone with HTC several times and here is what I've heard back via email:
"I understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with data connection side of the phone.
I cannot give you a reason on what happen to your device even though we have sucessfull models updated with the same FOTA.
In order to rectify this I would like you to perform the following actions:
1) Stop the automatic Backup in your phone. From the Home Screen > Menu > Settings > Privacy. Uncheck "Backup my settings".
2) Copy your Memory Card's personal data (photos, music, etc) into a PC Windows Desktop. Use the option "Disk Drive" when plug the USB cable.
3) Format the SD Card. While connected to a Windows PC. You can select the Format option via Windows Explorer or with the cable unplugged you can go from the Home Screen > Menu > Settings > SD & Phone Storage > Unmount / Erase SD Card.
4) Remove the SIM Card and the Memory Card.
5) Hard Reset your Mobile Device.
6) Skip the initial setup. Do not log into your Gmail account at this stage but setup the correct time and date on your mobile phone.
7) Insert the SIM card, accept the SIM notification on the top left corner and test the voice call, SMS and Internet Service.
Report back if one of this services fails with exact description on how you are doing to perform the task.
8) If possible, switch off and switch on your personal Wi-Fi router after 1 minute. Switch Wi-Fi on your mobile device and connect to the router. Report back if one of this services fails with exact description on how you are doing to perform the task.
9) Log into your Gmail account from the Home Screen > Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync > Add account and select Google.
Once more test and report back if the problem persists.

and with this method you solved the problem?i´ve curiosity lol
Given that I've already had a normal hard reset albeit without sim card dance, is it worth trying to do yet another one?
I just finished reinstalling apps and contacts - would hate to do this all over again.
Thanks
exactly! i am not sure whether the guys in support know what they are talking about...
Just keeping you busy until you've forgotten your original question ;-)

+1 for me there!
I now have switched several times from 2.2.1 to 2.3.3 and back, did full wipes, did resets, did reboots, did reflashes, tried EXT4 in the process, did even some praying... Nothing worked out so far.
I think it's kinda frustrating!
BTW: might there be a link to Thomson SpeedTouch WiFi access points? For I have had the experience that the WiFi did work at my office, where they use (amongst others) Sitecom access points, whilst at home I have SpeedTouch and no data stream.

There could well be a link there, i have a speedtouch router at homel Will try our belking access point at work, give me a few mins
Ok using the belkin at work, nothing, using the linksys one at work, it works.
so there are some defo issues with compatability, one thing is that my speedtouch is an N Series router, the Belkin also is N, the Linksys one is a/b/g
i wonder if there is something broken with compatability. Still no official stance from HTC

At other office, we use D-Link access points (DAP-1360) also N series with no possible WiFi connection running Gingerbread.
I am not sure but afaIk, my home SpeedTouch isn't N series. I will look that up next thing I come home.
Will report back.
Found another WiFi access point at the office 'somewhere in the air': Belkin G Plus MIMO (obviously a G-band router) and it connects fine!!

Hi ascottuk,
Just verified my WiFi access point at home (SpeedTouch) and it definitely is b/g.
So it can't be a N protocol incompatibility problem, since I have the mentioned WiFi problems at home too (and I am sure it isn't a signal strength problem).

Slow to respond to a 'ping'

Right, thought I'd ask this here even though the same problem happens on my wife's Wildfire S.
I have both phones connected via wifi to my home network. My main PC is hard-wired to the same router as the phones connect to and both phones have a static ip set up. If I use the network from the phone (e.g. use a browser to surf the net, use email or the Market) then I have no problems. I can also 'ping' my main computer from the phone (I have a terminal emulator installed) and it comes back immediately with a response.
The issue is when I try to ping the phone from my PC it takes several attempts to "wake up". Not a big problem, I hear you say, but the irritation from my side is that the same thing happens when I go to sync my contacts/calendar and I have to try several times to get it to connect.
Now, it could well be that this is an Android "feature" and there's nothing I can do about it, in which case fine, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. However, if there is something I can do I'd like to know what that "something" is. Anyone got any ideas as to what may be happening here?
Oh, both phones are bog stock and have been updated to the latest HTC firmware. Mine is unlocked and unbranded, the Wildfire S is a Vodafone branded mobile (UK).
Thanks in advance.
Dave
Not much help I know but my android phones (G1, Desire, Desire HD) all respond to a ping instantaneously, no lag.

It would seem since both the phones can ping your pc just fine and the router is able to process the request that the pc would be the weak link in the chain. There are several things that could cause your pc to lag while trying to ping your phones. Drivers, os environment, type of network card, firewalls, etc. Also if the phone is in a sleep state it would take longer or not return a response at all until screen is turned on or the WiFi is re awakened. There are settings in the phone to set the WiFi to not sleep but then you will eat up your battery. Best thing to do is make sure the phone is awake and WiFi signal obtained, then try to sync or ping. If it still is dodgy then you need to resolve issues on your pc.

[Q] Problems with Google Play Music on M8

Hey everybody,
Having an odd issue with my brand new M8, which is completely stock. Few days ago I've received an firmware update (1.57.111.2 / German T-Mobile CID) for my handset. Since that update I'm not able to use Google Play Music while connected to my wlan network. It seems like, that Play Music is not able to recognize my fully functional connection and therefore refuses to download and/or stream music.
All other apps (including Spotify) are able to use my wlan connection without any problems.
Turning wlan off helps to correct that error, but that workaround burns away my included traffic
Here's what I tried without success:
1. Did a factory reset
2. Deleted all wlan connections and reconfigured them
3. Cleared Play Music's caches
4. Contacted HTC (recommended the factory reset) as well as my provider (didn't have a clue)
5. Checked the number of eligible devices with Google (currently 3 out of 10)
Now I'm a bit puzzled on how to solve this issue and wanted to ask, if anybody did experience (and maybe solved) this issue.
Best,
Marc
I'm having the same problem. I received a update from T-Mobile USA for my M8 this past weekend. Google Play Music can't keep on device or stream with "Download via Wi-Fi only" and/or "Stream via Wi-Fi only" checked in settings. I hope it's not draining my data

I've discussed that issue with some German M8 users (all on T-Mobile Germany) and it appears to be limited to some Google Apps and to HTC Backup. However one user did reach out to T-Mobile and they're basically just stated, that they're currently looking into that without providing any sort of timeframe within to expect an fix for this. Downgrading the firmware fixes the problem, so T-Mobile must be the ones to blame ... very frustrating.
Hi there,
did anyone solve this issue yet? There is a few of us with an M7 that have exact same issues. I am in UK, so may not be carrier related.

Hey,
Thanks for pointing that out. Wasn't aware, that this issue affects the M7 too. Unfortunately, I'm really stuck at the moment as everybody involved is pointing fingers at each others. HTC tells me, that T-Mobile messed up ... T-Mobile at least confirmed, that there might be an error. Right now I'm trying to get my M8 replaced, as somebody did break some functionality of my device. A German M8 user pointed out, that the WLAN App from Amped Wireless can be used to confirm the error, as it is not able to detect an established WLAN connection (like some of the Google apps).
However, no solutions

I'm really glad to have happened upon this thread, as I'm having the exact same issue on an AT&T M8 that I just purchased a couple of days ago. I updated with the new "extreme power mode" firmware, but now I can't pin music from Google Play at all. Similar explanation and attempted fixes as holychain.
I am having the same issue in Google Music. Also Google+ Fotos has the same Problem: The autosync does not recognize the wifi connection.
HTC One M8 T-mobile Germany- latest firmware 1.57.111. 2.

Guys, I found the solution to this. I am now on ARHD 71.1 with all the google apps working.
Such a simple fix (well for me) - when the phone connects to your wifi at setup, it automatically sets it as a mobile hotspot and restricts background data. It's just a tick box - go here: settings / More (under wireless & networks) / data usage / click the 3 dots top right and select mobile hotspots then untick your wifi network.
Post back if it works for you. I will post on the main ARHD thread as well as it might be something Mike was unaware off.

Oh thank god I found this thread. This fixed the issue for me, as well as fixing Google photos, and Flickr auto upload. I was almost beginning to regret ditching my 5S for the M8 if the whole reason for me finally switching was due to Google Music being more reliable than iTunes Match.
Whomever set that as default is a jerk.
