[Q] OverClock... - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi every1, is there a way to learn how to OverClock my device?. I'm always on "The Go" (Mobile) and I depend a lot from my phone for the work which makes it very, Very difficult for me to stay away of any charger literally!
I've seen this device reach 1 day & over 10 hrs without charging , can some1 help me to find a way to have a little of liberty back & not having to charge so much?
Thanks in advance!

Then why are you asking with help with overclocking? Your trouble lies in syncs or an errant app. Set your syncs to manual and uninstall any you don't use like Google + or Facebook or stuff like that. Get something like Betterbatterystats to see what might be using your battery. Also get Memory Booster Lite and use the task killer to see what apps are sitting in memory. Also get CPUspy to make sure your phone is going into deep sleep when not in use and not on charge.

Over-clocking will kill your battery faster. I think you meant to ask about undervolting? That could save you battery life. But, before all that, I'd check for errant apps that are running like the previous post suggested. Also, get rid of widgets, etc.

I honestly would not advise overclocking. Everyone has their own opinions of it, and it is ok, that is, if you know what your doing. Sometimes people get the wrong impression that anyone can overclock their phone, which is entirely untrue. Unless you constantly want to worry about tweaking voltages, monitoring temperature, worry about frying your CPU and voiding your warranty, i would just stick with what you have.
There are PLENTY of roms out there that will boost your speed significantly to the point of never needing to overclock, unless your just trying to impress your friends.
I strongly suggest starskyrom, which you can find here.
If your mind is still set on overclocking, go to youtube and search samsung epic overclock. Look specifically for videos made by qbking.
I would use the Samurai kernels, and I would NEVER go beyond 1.2 ghz for everday use. Its ok to bump it up to 1.3+ when your showing off, or need some power for a short period of time.
Good luck, and remember, overclocking has its rewards AND its risks. The question you need to ask yourself is a $500.00 phone worth risking for a barely noticeable amount of performance increase.

I'm sorry for misunderstood the use of O/C & U/V, my phone yesterday leave me without batt. & get tired of it. I've used Odin to go back stock and actually stay that way but find it kinda boring =/...
I will check the Starsky Rom right now, I'll search for more info. about the U/V uses which is the one I'm interested.
Thank you all for having the time & patience to answer, even recommend me some app's & rom's, I'm very thankful to you all =)!

We try to help when we know what you are asking..LOL. A little undervolting may help but mostly see if there is something running that shouldn't.

some ppl will probly argue tho it did help lil on my 2.2 rom but the gin roms jd has real issues the brightness goes up and down dosent allow u to install anything until u uninstall jd, i tried to stop it from running and still no go so id save your money
It work a little ..but like the guy said save ur cash...
funnie evo
I'm on cm7 and I bought UJ finally and it's pretty good. Makes my phone last the whole day. Granted I am a moderate user but from 4AM to 12AM is pretty good.

I use sense roms and i see a big enough difference with JD Ultimate for the few bucks it costs..i get close to double my regular battery usage with it..there is ways to get it without paying if u are into that kind of stuff
i'd try normal juicedefender first. if you like it, then review what features you will get from ultimate. if you think it's worth it, then buy on in. if not, then don't.
btw, in my experiance, letting it toggle my 4g actually lost me battery.
My experience it was ok. I got it for the sense 2.1 rom due to the brightness issues. I had to unistall it because it was making my connectivity act up. My data wouldn't start back up on wake sometimes. Overall it wasn't saving me a dramatic amount either.
In all fairness I didn't customize it. Just used normal or aggressive default.

SetCPU
If you're really gonna spend some money on an app SetCPU is the way to go for battery life (Assuming you're rooted). This way you have a customizable governor on your processor and you can tell it how fast to run. Unless you've already done this in which case sorry. I get at least a good two days out of my battery on almost all the roms I run and I flash a lot, Letting it die completely when the screen is off does a tremendous job & really you don't need it to run over 700 mhz for most things. Give it a try, the trick is setting the profiles. Use on demand for your scaling then set accordingly, keep in mind you need to set the most important profiles such as temperature and screen off as your 100 or 99 level profiles. You'll get the hang of it, but as I said if you already use it then this was a giant waste of typing
P.S. if running the Stock HTC Kernel you have to disable perflock in order for the profiles to work. Main tab, menu, perflock disabler.

First of all, the super awesome setcpu developer posted it on the forum for free, so you don't really need to buy from market. Second, the smart ass governer can do this all automatically. Finally, juice defender still works better for me.

I use Tasker from the Market, creating profiles such as turning off data when screen is off and data on when screen is on (doesn't affect voice calls or SMS/MMS). Also, I use Autokiller Memory Manager (not a task killer). I can get from 17 hours on normal use to 31 hours with light to moderate use. As I write this, I'm at 88% battery left after 5 hours off the charger.
What exactly do the app do?

[Q] Beginner to UV

I was wondering if there's a place for beginners to look to start UV'ing or even OC'ing.
i couldn't really find anything that i could understand. i'm not a complete noob. but to phones and rooting and roms. i get lost :S but i finally took the plunge on my epic :]
i'm one of those people that uses their phone constantly. i look at it nearly every 10 minutes. i'm on SRF 1.2 and have calibrated my battery. and i got about i think 10 hours last night to about 15 percent area. i'm using the AIM, and IMO messenger app, also weather bug. so i'm trying to figuare out best settings to get the best battery life without lock ups and freezes.
aanother question i have is, is there any alternative free app for setCPU or titanium back up?
any help would be appreciated :]
is really easy to undervolt, all u have to do is mess with the frequencies a little and use it like u normally do a couple of hours to see if u dnt get any freezes, if u do, all u have to do is pull the battery and restart ur phone. And to overclock u gotta have a kernel that allows overclocking like genocide or vision kernel. All phone are different so the frequencies that work on my phone may not work on urs. So jst give it a try

SetCPU

Okay, so I'm generally new to using SetCPU but I feel it could greatly help improve the performance of my device. That being said, I want to create a few profiles and was wondering if I could get a little help doing so. I'm not sure if this matters or not, but I'm running the Legendary ERA 2.2 rom + the latest Samurai SEPPUKU kernel.
Basically, these are the kind of profile's i'd like to setup:
- General profile, just for the usual facebooking and texting.
- General profile for just listening to music via last.fm/Winamp
- General profile for just for playing games
And finally... A profile to do all of the above without murdering my battery TOO much. As well as a profile for when my phone is not in use, to conserve battery.
I'd like to save as much battery as possible in the process of these things. The last time I tried to screw with SetCPU I ended up getting tons of random reboots, which completely made me change my mind about the app. With help on figuring these things out, I'll be able to come to a general understanding of what my settings should be for certain things and I'll be able to setup my own profiles for anything else I may need. Sorry for the long post, and for being such a newbie, but I hope I can get a little help here
Side-note: Also, I was wondering how you guys like the Shadow Kernel, as opposed to Samurai. So far, my ROM and kernel have been doing all that I've been needing them to do, so I haven't really felt the need to try it out. So any feedback regarding it would be nice, because I might be willing to give it a shot.
Really sorry if this is asking too much.

I'm sorry but your thread title is not in the form of a question. Thanks for playing our game though.
LOL.
But to answer your question, if you want to conserve as much battery as possible set each profile for the least max frequency you can stand.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I know that listening to music the cpu usually sticks to 200-400 mhz so if your not using the touchscreen and just shuffling id make your music profile 100-400 and when your on facebook or the screen is on id use 100-800 1000 if you need some extra speed . And for gaming id keep it around 1.2-1.5 if you need that much like emulators use a lot of cpu power I know cuz I still get lag at 1.4-.15 on n64oid. Also if you do go with emulatora sixaxis control app will be a must allows you to reconfigure your bluetooth stack as a address and you can then change ur ps3 controllers bt address to pair with ur phone. As for a general profile id use just the typical 100/1000 and undervolt as low as possible for example I do this
100 -200
200 -175
400 -150
800 -100
1000 -75
1100 -75
1200 -50
1400 -25
1500 none
Notice I don't use 600, 900, and 1300 cuz those crap my phone up for some reason don't follow these exactly as each phone is different just an example just test em and see how you fair.
Btw Voltage Control is WAY better

Thank you Biggoron, I'm going to get rid of SetCPU and grab voltage control now
And thank you for the suggestions, I just want to make my battery last as long as possible without having to go charge it every 5 minutes xD I'll give your suggestions a shot!
Also, I tried to read up on the undervolting/overclocking thread and ended up getting really lost. I'll have at it again, but for the most part could you give me a brief explanation of on demand, powersave, conservative, etc.. and which would be best for the ways I use my phone (stated in first post). Sorry for the hassle, I'm still learning! Haha x)
Sent from the one and only Legendary Samurai ;]
Govenros are basically how the cpu runs frequencies and depending on the gov it varies like ondemand it may ramp it up to the top when touch input is applied but drop down when its not needed. Conservative will keep it as low as possible unless you start using it and then it will slowly move up and the others are vairants of the two really there's a thread some where if you google it.
Id say lagfree if your gaming, ondemand for facebook, and conservative for music

Ahhhh dude your such a lifesaver, seriously. Thank you so much =)
Also, are virus protection programs worth having on my phone? I always considered them a waste of time, but nowadays I'm hearing a lot about them. What's your personal opinion on that? And also are there anymore apps you'd reccomend?
Edit: Also, what voltage should I use for when I'm asleep (phone inactive), or asleep (downloading stuff (like ROMs, etc.)?
Sorry for all the hassle haha, you've been such a help.

As for virus protection unless you watch an extended amount of pron then I wouldn't worry
For the most part if you stay away from black markets for apps you should be good especially those in which require root access.

2.1Ghz Overclock like on HTC One XL

Hey guy's I noticed the one xl just got kernel sources recently and the result? Insane oc! I was just wondering how hard it would be to match the 2.1 frequency on the galaxy s3 lte as they both run Qualcomm s4's.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
The 1.9Ghz we currently have isn't enough for you? !!
Ahaha, well the thing is I returned my one xl for a galaxy s3 for performance reasons. I love to get every bit of power I can from my device and I somewhat expected the s4 to hit the 2ghz barrier soon after it was fiddled with. Battery drain is not a deal breaker for me.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
2.1 ghz.... My device runs butter smooth on stock... Will 2.1 cause it to melt like microwaved butter??
From what I heard mildly hot these s4's can handle it though.

is overclocking a phone anything like overclocking a PC? I've never Oc'd a phone before but have plenty of experience on PC.

Way more simpler actually. An app shows you your available frequencies choose the one you want and done.Oh and its live OC to.
Overclocking a phone is not easier than overclocking a PC.
Phones have many CPU steps so you have to find the right voltage for each step.
Also you can only change CPU voltage and frequency. (Some kernels allow you to change bus speed which is nice but alot don't support this.)
The only sensor you have is battery temp.
Furthermore, when overclocking a pc, you can just run prime95 for 10 hours and you know your stable. With the phone there is no difinitive stability test so sometimes something might trigger an instability afte you have been "stable" for a while.
Also no third party cooling. (As far as I know)
Im not saying it's really hard, but honestly when you come from PC overclocking you will probobly get frustrated about some things.
All that being said, overclocking a phone is super fun and I hope I didn't scare you away from it in any way.
Am I the only one who isnt interested in overclocking in the least bit? I mean, the damn thing is fast enough already. I can understand overclocking something old like a nexus one, but wow. What do you guys get out of OC? What do you use OC for that requires the higher speeds?

If you have to ask this then don't worry about it. The average PC doesn't need more than 1ghz. We overclock because we can!

I custom built my computer, im sure i can overclock it to who knows what but it being so new i don't even think about it. Maybe in 2 years when it starts showing age.
Most people that overclock their PC will get a new one before they really need the speed anyway. It's just because its is fun. And plus if you know how to overclock, there is really no reason not to. It's not like it's a trade off, its just free performance.
gotcha, i wasnt meaning to be disrespectful, i just never understood it unless needed.
You should try overclocking your PC. You might find that it is very fun.

I said simpler because in my experience I just select the frequency that I want and it causes no stability issues and under volt each step by 25mv.

Your right about that. If your not pushing it to it's limits its easy. But then again the same could be said for PCs.

Undervolting questions

I've never done this before so I'm just curious what are good levels to set? And what are the benefits of doing it? here is a pic of what I'm running... Thanks in advance..

Please dont quote me on this and maybe someone else here with a bit more knowledge could chime in, but when I first rooted I started playing around with UV and would become unstable and adjust accordingly. When all was said and done and I found a stable set up there almost wasnt a decent enough difference for me to even notice in battery life. I was informed that the amount of battery to reboot the phone one time actually uses more juice that what you would save all day undervolting. Also most of the Kernels I have used such as Franco are already pushed pretty low to conserve. If you use a Kernel outside of stock I would almost recommend to not even mess with it. Again someone with a bit more knowledge in the area might know more.
