[Q]How to backup without root? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

as the title says, i want to backup my phone for root. however most backup programs require root. anyone able to help me out?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18578780
Follow the steps above, BUT after you Odin recovery do a nandroid backup BEFORE you root with the superuser zip. This way your backup won't have root access.
Now you don't have to root at all, but at least you'll have access to recovery and have a stock backup and SU zip file handy in case you do want to root.
Powered by the SGSII....

thank you sir, i just didnt want to reinstall all the apps and stuffs that i already had on here before root. yeah its a small thing but still would like to save the settings i had and whatnot on them.

there's no way to perform a full back without root
all the good backup Apps requires root to work
namely Nandroid (in CWR) or Titanium Backup

Where does nandroid store the backup? I was going to restore a backup, after data wipe, wipe cache, and wipe system/dalvik. I always wipe these when installing any ROM on my Vibrant and now SGS II. No backup exists now.
It must be one of the areas I wiped. I need to know so I don't wipe my backups anymore?

Thats not exactly true... Nandroid backup can be done in cwm without root.

Nandroid backup?

I am thinking right now?
Did a nandroid backup when I was completely happy with ROM (MIUI GingerBread).
After that I sat and played a lot of different apps widgets, etc.
Also downloaded a bunch of widgets and tested.
Then when I tried it finished I went into file manager and deleted the folders that I thought had something to do with the apps I tested.
But if I accidentally delete a folder that I should not have been removed, reset everything anyway when I reset my nadroid backup?
Are you asking if a nandroid restore will restore the data you deleted on your sd card? If so, the answer is no.

No, just want to know if I accidentally deleted something that was needed in my nandroid backup?
Or you can delete anything on the SD card and it will still be reset by nandroid backup?
Nadroids are stored on your sdcard at /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ (at least for me). Don't touch this folder. If you are unsure what to delete, nandroid and copy the entire SD to your computer.

Do you need to do a wipe of everything before you restore a backup nandroid?
depends what you mean by wipe everything, do you mean your data or your dalvik cache?
you can restore a nandroid back up with the dalvik cache in place, but that really depends why you're doing the restore as you might want to wipe and start a fresh.

Check SD card
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ for ClockworkMOD recovery
/sdcard/nandroid for AmonRA recovery

You can wipe everything you want unless it states otherwise. If you are simply updating your ROM to a newer version, you may not need to do a full wipe. Just read the 1st and 2nd pages of the ROM forum for more information on that...
Nandroid does not back up or restore anything from sd storage, and your radio, recovery and hboot are also separate.

Except for an ext-partition of the sd-card, as far as any exists. At least amonra-recovery has this option, do not know as it is with the clockworkmod-recovery.

Questions

Can someone help me?
I rooted using Galaxy Nexus ToolKit v5.5.
Now I'm ready for a ROM.
From what I've read, below are the directions, but I just need more detail.
Make sure you're on the latest CWM (How would I know?)
MAKE A NANDROID (What is a, "NANDROID"?)
wipe data/factory reset in recovery
flash ROM
flash Gapps (Where do I get the GApps)?
reboot

Using ROM manager flashing it will tell you if you have the latest or not.
A nandroid is a backup that backs up EVERYTHING except the radio. This is performed in CWM
Gapps are available at goo-inside.me/GAPPS
Would TT Backup be the same thing as a NANDroid backup?

No, Titanium only backs up your applications. Nandroid essentially backs up the entire ROM. When you restore a nandroid, the phone is identical to the way it was when you made it.
When I boot into recovery, I see options to backup and restore. Is doing a Naindroid Backup? I also see a folder on the phone named, "clockworkmod" with a folder in that called "Backup"
If above is a Naindroid backup, then, when I do a "wipe data/factory reset in recovery", will this delete the "Naindroid" files?

You're phone has /system/app, /data/app, and a few other folders that your apps and info are saved in. Titanium backup makes a backup of these.
Clockwork mod recovery makes a backup of your entire phone, apps, data, etc. Creating a nandroid is creating a backup which is saved in /clockworkmod/backup. Wiping data/factory reset clears the data on your phone. It does NOT delete anything on your SD card. This is assuming you wipe from within Clockworkmod. Do not wipe from within the phone settings.

First time flashing ROM question

I rooted, did a CWM backup and also did a titanium backup. I downloaded a jelly bean ROM and dragged it into my phone. My question is this. After I do a wipe and then install the ROM won't titanium backup be deleted? How will I restore from titanium after I install the ROM?

TiBu backs up to your internal (or external) sdcard, which doesn't get wiped when you do a wipe & factory reset (cache, dalvikcache, system, and data partitions), so you're good to go as long as you remember not to format your sdcards. Just re-install TiBu + TiBu key (paid) after flashing the ROM, then restore. If you're worried, tell TiBu to backup to DropBox or GoogleDrive instead.

[Q] Restoring from CWM Backup

I have a question:
If I backup my current ROM, flash a completely stock one, then restore only data from the CWM backup. Will I get back my apps and everything I installed and did on the phone?
Thanks。

[Q] Will Wipe system and data in TWRP wipe out my ROM but not my back-ups?

Hey,
I an trying to wipe my ROM and reinstall a fresh ROM. In TWRP Recovery, if I hit wipe system and data wipe, will that effect my back-ups on TWRP? Trying wipe the current one and restore the very first backup after installing the revolution HD M8 9.1 .
Only wiping Internal SD will wipe twrp backups. So wiping system, data and caches should be fine.
Sometimes things go wrong though. Good to have a backup of a backup off the device. And/or another rom zip. Titanium backup backups are good to store off device too. And pics, etc.
Bad things happen... And it's a drag when all your stuff goes away. :good:
Storing things as backup on an external sd is good too... But not fool proof either.

Agree to all the above. Always give yourself multiple ways out of a jam; and taking a few minutes to backup off-device is a great way to avoid regret and headaches.
