Hacking the Sony Liveview

Despite the bad reviews I picked up a Liveview yesterday. Was $50 brand new off Craigslist. And surprise surprise, it turned out to be a turd. Well, I don't like to waste money, so I set about modding it. Thought some people here might be interested to see what I did.
So far I've waterproofed the case. Next I'll be building a better strap, one that doesn't make it huge or block the USB port. http://www.jax184.com/projects/liveview/liveview.html has everything I've done so far on it.

Nice i got that thing and it "worked" but still with the having to restart it all the time was very annoying but i ended up sending mine back

So I've been using the Liveview for a couple days, or at least trying to. Even after doing a full reset of the device, reinstalling the software on my phone and removing all the plugins, it has a battery life of about 6-8 hours. In that time I turned the screen on twice, and it briefly lit up to tell me of an incoming call. No texts, no alerts, and I don't have farcebook/twatter/etc turned on. It sat 2 feet from my phone the entire time. If I actually try to use the damn thing to, say, control the media player, the battery goes dead in 2 to 3 hours.

I've decided I'm going to build it into a custom case for a friend of mine with a much larger battery, since the stock one is completely and utterly useless. So much for my gasket job...

Not sure if the battery is just dying on yours or what but if I never touch the screen, mine lasts for a couple days at least (and that's with alerts!). Sad to hear yours has issues :\

Mine's brand new and running the latest firmware/software with the bare minimum of functionality enabled, so I'm as confused as you.

I have a liveview and i absolutely love it. I dont have any connection issues but i mostly just use it as a watch with out having it connected over bluetooth and the battery lasts for days when i do that. I do have an issue now where i dropped it and the select button on top doesnt work anymore

Can I connect multiple liveviews to my phone?
I just bought 4 of them for $15 a pop !! Sweet
I know I can use it with torque which is cool
what else can I do with them? Can I run album art to it from say player pro? or Pocket Casts?
is there a decent list somewhere of "interesting" things you can do with the little buggers?

Hi, do someone know the dimensions of the battery, because i have one with death batt. and need a replacement.

nice mod! Based on the pictures I can see the battery size in case I need to replace it, by the way using notifications my watch last 2.5 days, using a plugin last only 30minutes or less

+1 I just got one for $15, I wanna find some cool things I can do with it. What have you done to set yours up?

its a pain in the freaking butt. cool potential poor execution.
it constantly gets disconnected when something goes wrong ON THE DROID SIDE. terminating the app and relaunching it solves the problem for X period of time (few hours ??)
the most convenient access is also the worst designed. the watch band. YOU CAN NOT CHARGE IT WHILE IN THE WATCH BAND.
what freaking moron though that was a good idea to force us to remove it (VERY difficult) to charge it.
if the software bugs get worked out I may look into modding the stinking socket so I can charge it while in watch mode (thinking of RIVETING the case to the band) then I won't need the little watch pin thingy that is keeping me from charging it while its in the watch band.
and there is just not that many "cool" apps to use for it yet or the few out their are poorly executed.

2 Generations of Liveviews
Just to be clear, there are 2 versions of this device floating about... The older one goes for around $20 and is not much more than a novelty... The newer model runs around $100 and seems to have fixed the battery life issue... One should look at the Pebble once it is available as a possible alternative...

I started creating a usable gui for the openliveview project. Theo openliveview project is an open source reimplementation Of the liveview app.

Where can you find one for 15 bucks? Even if it did nothing, I'd want it for 15 bucks, just to have as a key for my phone using tasker. I supposed I could get any old bluetooth headset, but I wanted something wearable.

Yeah, $15 is AWESOME!
$18 with Free shipping on ebay buy it now is the best price I can find so far.
I bought four of them and donated 2 to the local hackerspace.
Would be wicked to control more than one at once. I'm trying to find some chick to wear two as earrings.
Perhaps one controlled with Sony app and one Open Liveview App each for one mac address.
Contrary to earlier post, I seem to be able to have both Sony and Openliveview apps installed at once (though haven't tried RUNNING both) yet.
My battery life across the two that I've evaluated and (a third I lost to the ocean) seems significantly better than the average reported above.
But a LOT of variables have changed since the OP. New firmware, new app, new phone, new bt stack, new android versions...
My impression IIRC is that this thing is ROCK SOLID on CyanogenMod7 or CM9 on evo 3d.

Absolutely love the device.
The Zoe feature and camera UI is top notch. You can do some really neat things with photo editing that I haven't seen on other devices. Galleries and slideshows are very cool too. I love showing those off to people and they're always impressed.
The screen is absolutely gorgeous with great viewing angles.
The front facing speakers are as good as people hype them up. I feel like I'm listening to a mini Bose system when I use them.
The build quality/design is among the best in smartphones. Easily the sexiest device I've owned.
Battery life has been surprisingly tremendous for me. I only plug in at night and easily get through a day of pretty heavy usage. Typically have about 40 to 50% battery left by the end of the night. I do use the snapdragon battery app so maybe that helps a bit.
The storage space was a concern for me but I ordered a meenova and it should be on its way soon. The reviews I've read on those have been positive and I just received my 64gb microSD card which I'll use for my carefully curated music collection. That will free up the 32gb onboard for everything else.

The battery was my biggest concern prior to buying and I have been presently surprised at how good it's been. I agree with his assessment 100%.

32gb is not enough storage for a phone? I'm curious what everyone is storing. I'm probably using less that 10gb currently. For music, I'll download an album here and there, but usually use pandora or stream from my amazon cloud.
For the OP, no problems so far. Battery life has been good. I don't try to let it run down, charge when I'm able, and haven't died yet. Looking at a portable battery pack just in case.
Phone is very smooth and fast, no problems streaming videos or playing intense games like asphalt 8.

I'm a big time music aficionado and have a ton of music on my phone. I don't have unlimited data so streaming isn't really an option.

I have only had my for a few days but I get a full day of battery life without any issue. I am a fairly low to medium user, but on my droid3 I would have to plug in at the 10 hour mark.
Here is a screen shot of my first full day, medium use downloading apps and getting it all set up. Plus about a million speed tests.

I can vouch for battery life being great for such a beast of a device... My rezound with half the specs and extended battery pack has about the same life as my One with similar usage, but the one does it faster with a bigger screen.
And I think 32gb is adequate. I would love to have 64 or 128, but I never use more than 16 or so GB before I start cleaning storage out.
I love light and fast with a small footprint, so this phone rocks.

(EDIT) Since posting the below, including edits, I have come to the conclusion that my phone is indeed defective, and am having it replaced. I'll report back.
I love the phone, but there are three major problems that prevent me from recommending it, although I don't know what else to get.
1. The camera. It has problems with focus, and the interaction between focus and exposure settings. It's hard to get a sharp picture out of it at medium to long range, making it all but useless for landscape/distance shots. The default settings let in too much light outside in daylight, resulting in hazy shots; and the only way to get a blue sky or anything close to enough sharpness to even zoom in just a little is to over-darken the shot by notching down the exposure and contrast controls. Indoors, there's flaring of brighter areas, and oversensitivity to the purple spectrum, as well as near impossibility of getting sharp shots at any distance. The auto exposure control changes the exposure so jerkily it's devilish to control. The wide angle and aspects of the big pixels show a lot of promise (and I'll bet the iPhone 5s with its 8 "ultra pixels" will provide proof of concept), but the way it is, the camera sucks. HTC says they're aware of this and working on an update. Uh huh. How long has this phone been out now internationally?
2. The speakers. A major selling point of the phone, and rightly so, as they really do sound great - especially with Beats on, or you can get more volume with it off, if volume is a priority. But the speakers are out of balance, with the bottom (right) one louder than the left, and there's some phase weirdness. For those of us who notice these things - this phone's natural constituency - it's really annoying. HTC says they "haven't heard much about this", but are looking into it. Meanwhile, I went into a corporate Verizon store and every employee in there with any experience of the phone said, "Oh yeah, everybody knows about that," and proceeded to give me the most imbecilic, trumped up explanations you could ever imagine. The kicker was, "They have to make the top speaker softer because they use it as an earpiece for the phone function."
3. BLUETOOTH. Unfreakingbelievable. If it hasn't been connected since the phone was last turned off, it will connect to your car radio automatically, as long as Bluetooth on the phone is turned on BEFORE the car. (EDIT - Turns out this isn't always the case, and may depend on the particular car radio.) But once the connection is broken, it will not re-connect automatically. When you try to connect manually, it may or may not connect properly, or may need repeated tries, or connect media but not phone function, or it may show it has done both but actually hasn't. But regardless, although the phone's music player will play, internet radio type apps will not play over Bluetooth - and the call quality will be greatly degraded. The only fix is to turn the phone completely off and on again - with Fast Boot OFF; a soft restart will NOT fix it - whereupon everything works fine. (EDIT - The foregoing fix also does not always work. With my car (2012 Subaru Impreza Ltd.), once the connection is successfully made, Bluetooth can be turned off and on again on the phone, and it will connect without a problem. It is when the car has been turned off that reconnection becomes a problem. My iPhone 4 worked flawlessly with this car.)
I really don't think my particular phone is faulty, in all these ways, especially since it doesn't have any of the other problems people have been reporting, and works perfectly otherwise. But please, somebody, convince me that it is, and I'll go get another one! Any case, there's loads of people having these problems.
(EDIT - further investigation with a couple of actually honest and knowledgable Verizon people has reinforced my conclusions, including the "loads of people having these problems" part, objected to by the commenter below. The camera is decidedly sub-par, the speakers are not in balance, and the Bluetooth, apparently typically of HTC, is badly done. These sources also reinforce those on this board who indicate that rooting can solve or improve these issues.)

Using the words loads isnt really accurate... The vocal majority are almost always having issues. Also realize that such a small percentage of the user base go to xda. Personally I don't see many of the issues you are having. If you look for cows youll see cows...

I suspect foul play in these early "reviews" of the 360

Is it just me or does it seem kind of suspicious all of these "expert" review sites came out of the blue and bashed the 360 's battery life and performance before giving it a proper test? Also suspicious how most of these sites are either pro apple or pro samsung ( don't get me wrong I love samsung too). If you check the reviews coming out now from sites that actually know how to review (Gizmodo, phandroid, droidlife, anandtech etc...) they all say the battery life is perfectly fine. Even here on our forums everyone is confused as to how these review sites got such "terrible" battery life... yet we all are consistently getting decent life with and without the ambient sensor on. Looks to me like jealous competitors paying off the media to bash the 360 before it can even get off the ground. Just my 2 cents...

id hate to see that happen but yes most of the sites that had bad early reviews are sites with clear apple bias proved multiple times. Im hoping maybe they just had early software or hardware

Idk if I agree with you.. Those media sites probably only got a hold of the watch on the 4th and had to write a review within a day because the watch was released on the 5th... One day is never enough for a good judgment of battery life

nah, probably all the tech sites got this on their hands already couple of weeks ago but since they have embargo to post anything before the 5th they couldn't say anything. I was actually suspecting this already some weeks ago since all the major tech-sites went silent on Moto360.
They have had their fare share to test the moto 360 and if they say the battery is awful I am willing to believe them. I mean the battery size is very small and for some reason Moto went for a very power hungry processor. I have no idea why they made such a big mistake but this is what we have now.

Actually I find most websites extremely Pro-Motorola, with "this is the first real smartwatch" and the like comments.

The original Galaxy Gear look like a "Smart Watch" to me.
Moto fans sound like apple sheep, look Motorola invented the first smart watch.
The latest battery life test I seen said the watch was turned on 7:30 am and went on until 11 pm and had 28% left.
Well my Gear Live has the same battery life but I do not have to flick my wrist or press and button to turn the display on.
If I used the Gear Live the same way it last 2 days easy.
In ambient mode they say 13 hours???
Really go out in the evening and your "cool" looking watch turns into dead weight.
You do not speak for everybody, why not buy a round phone?
Because you do things like read email and the round shape is a waste of screen space.
The same can be said with a watch, I read emails on my watch.... Why would I want it to be round.
I have since the age of digital watches always had a rectangular watch, and this means since the 90s
but face it Motorola is a Chinese company (soon) you do not have to be loyal to it, and the battery life of the Moto 360 is joke.

Plus, that's not how I'd like to use my smartwatch- I don't want it for reading emails, I just need to know that I got an email. If I want to read it, I'd just pull my phone out and read it. Much in the same way, I don't use my phone to write up long replies to emails, that's not what it's for, I use my laptop to do that, after I've read it on my phone.

this is exactly how I plan on using the watch. Sure, in a pinch I can read the emails on my phone, but it's not ideal. Same thing with my phone... Sure, I can respond to emails from my phone, but ideally I would reply from my computer.

me too. more-so to know if the message i received needs immediate response or if it can wait. some people expect the watch to be more than just an extension of a notification center.

I dunno.. I am not having battery issues but i find the watch extremely underwhelming so far and more annoying than helpful. I dont like that the person sitting next to me can easily read a text sent to me if my wrist is in view. I don't like how cumbersome the UI feels (yes i know its an early iteration and will get better) and i find that since im such a habitual phone checker anyway.. all the watch does it make me look at the same message twice because im going to open my phone to respond to the message anyway. I'm not gonna look like an idiot **** tracy dictating a text into my watch.

It's obviously not for everyone. For me personally, I started wearing watches recently so instead of having to whip out my phone to check the time, I can just look down on my wrist. Having a smart watch will now allow me to determine if a message is worth responding to immediately or if it can wait without having to use my phone to check.

Isn't it possible that some of these reviews were written about a pre-release device? I know that the embargo was only lifted on Friday, but we have seen these things in the wild for the past 3-4 months on the wrists of various pop-tech people.

No, "everybody" here is not confused. Many, many people are confirming what the reviews have said, or even saying that they can't get into double digits in terms of hours of battery life with light to moderate use.

Uhh, where are the many people? I'm on here and reddit's Moto 360 section. Almost everyone is claiming positive battery life, I've seen one post that was less than a day and that's because it was their first day using it so they were constantly messing with it. I'm at 18 hours and 28% left, I even used it for some navigation, a lot of email/FB/SMS checks, just messing with it, etc.

Nobody can easily read your text message from your watch no matter how close they are sitting next to you. For starters normal human posture is going to make the watch appear upside-down to anyone next to you. On the off-chance you have your wrist angled in such a manner that the screen is oriented upright, they'd still have to be gawking at your wrist to read anything from it, something that I'm sure you would notice and would be very awkward for them to pull off. Finally, at least on the G watch, the text message is only displayed when you tap the message. All anyone would actually see is a notification from the senders name, not the message itself. There are plenty of events that dont require you to look at your phone to acknowledge. Reminders, timers, alerts, etc. Half the emails and SMS I get do not require a response so I just dismiss/delete them from the watch face.

I knew these battery life reviews were trash before the watch was even released. I could just tell from the reviewers attitude that they either held some sort of bias against the device, or they were just typical review clowns who didnt really use it at all. Whether they got their hands on one a week in advance or a day in advance, I think it's obvious they only tested it for about 2 hours, saw battery life was down to 80% with screen on full brightness messing with it nonstop, and then decided they could just average out the usage for the remainder of the day so they could get on to the next review. I mean honestly, you think a reviewer who has to write 10 articles by the end of the week actually sat there and played with this watch nonstop the whole time? Hell no, they just rushed through it.

Balderdash. In this very forum, probably 2/3 of posts are saying 12-14 hours tops, and probably a full 1/3 are saying they can't even manage that long. Very, very few are saying longer than 18-20 hours.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, lol. I'm not as active in this subforum as Reddit, so I'm going off what I see over there and the few that I've seen here. I'm at 4 hours and 87% right now, so I don't know unless these people are using always on screens.

I like it, my issues are not with the hardware, although I won't lie and say I don't wish for more battery life. My issues are with how beta android wear feels. Hopefully google will give it some TLC, but google seems like a company that puts a lot of effort into something, releases it then forgets it.
Anyhoo, especially after seeing the atrocity that is the apple watch I'm going to keep my 360 and of course eventually grab a Note 4. It's kind of a gimmick right now, but at least it's a nice looking gimmick and I'll give google the benefit of the doubt.

I have no problems with the speed of it - haven't noticed any stuttering or anything that people have mentioned. However, the battery is complete crap. I tried to use it today when I played 18 holes of golf w/ the Swing by Swing app (which actually works _very_ well w/ the watch, showing distance and letting you input your scores on the watch). The watch went from 95% to 0% on hole 12, about 3 hours in (slow play!). I only turned the watch on a few times a hole and didn't get any messages or anything in the meanwhile. The watch has also gone from 100% to 5% when used as a sleep tracker for 5 1/2 hours.

It's OK. I realized from day one that this is SQUARELY first/early adopter territory. As far as the battery goes, luckily, recharging takes only a little time. I found the secret is the mid day recharge. I turned off ambient mode and my phone was at 75% after almost 5 hours. Over lunch I tossed it on an old Nokia charger I had for 20 minutes and had over 90%. Right now it's 8:30p and I have 60%.
Midday charge while you're at the desk for 20 minutes erases all worries. Should you have to do it... No. But if you do it eliminates a pretty annoying issue.
The leather band annoys me, because I hate leather bands. The Pebble bands don't do it for me, just my opinion sorry, just being honest. Was it so fu^king hard to allow enough room for any band? The "notch" is just a slap in the face.

Yep, we all have to realize we are kind of alpha testing here. The Moto 360 version 2 will probably be decent, and version 3 will be awesome.

And maybe by the next version Motorola find a way to keep the small bezel and have a fully round screen.

I agree, it's OK. I sold my Gear 2 to get this because I didn't like the square/plastic combo, and thought I didn't like the OS, but frankly the way the interface worked was much better than Android Wear. It had a great looking display and got 3-4 days of battery life!
But it's a watch, so looks mean a lot... I may have to return this bad boy and wait for the LG R, or the Moto 362, lol...
-My only hope is that since this is Android there will be some decent development happening, but after reading some posts I'm not so sure...

I'm in the UK so still waiting for it to be released here. Blessing in disguise for me as I'm not one to be an early adopter so by the time it is released, I'll have the wealth of knowledge from US user comments/reviews before I pull the trigger on it.

I think the device is doing quite well for a first release. The battery on ambient mode lasts all the way until I get home from work and will last a workout as well counting all my steps and monitoring my heart rate several times. I also think overall the watch looks pretty executive. Has a professional look and feel to it. Can't help but think all the square smart watches are too "kid-like".
As previously mentioned, once android wear adds features and apps start catching up I think there is really great potential for the device.

I love it. Does what I need it to do, which is notify me and let me respond to texts and certain apps. I can use it for navigation and some Google questions. I take it off the charger around 6am and by the time i charge it at night (around 10pm) it still has 30-40%. I am a light user... meaning, I dont need (and turned off) Google Now (watch telling me info w/out asking). I don't care for step count or heart rate cuz I run at night anyway. I dont care to add games or browsing apps on it. That is what my phone is for. What I use it for may not be worth $250, but its the best looking (IMO) and there are not much AW options out right now.
Just glad I don't have to constantly check my phone for any important notifications from work or family.
The only thing i wish it had was a speaker phone.

I'm on my 4th day and really like it but I'll be honest I wished Samsung had a round watch and running Android Wear all because I plan to get the Note 4.
Besides that my battery seemed to improve with every charge. Only thing I wish was to be able to turn off vibration and still see notifications when it comes. So far if I scroll top to bottom it will turn off vibration and notifications. Unless I'm doing it wrong.

After the 1st day of having it I thought I would sell it because I didn't think the watch did much and I thought I'd be judged by friends and coworkers for buying a smart watch (half kidding) but android wear has grown on me and everyone who's seen it loves it.

My impressions after a few days

No photos, apologies- my post count is not high enough.
Out of Box:
Usually I wouldn't mention this as anyone can watch an unboxing video online. But using the watch out of the box was quite a bad experience that others seem to be having as well.
Out of the Box the watch has a bit of a charge but will die almost immediately. The problem with this is that charging the watch is a difficult experience. Using the included charger, I was not able to charge the watch faster then it was discharging. To be honest I'm not sure what happened that caused the watch to eventually work but after a half hour of fumbling, the watch updated to something that was not the latest build (I only know because the charging screen was updated) and started charging.
One of the worst setups I've ever had to deal with. Luckily I only have to deal with it once.
On the wrist:
I'm not a watch wearer. I can't stand wearing any kind of jewelry. The watch itself feels very nice (for a watch) and very light to wear. It's not making my wrist sweaty and the feel is good. As a tiny wristed man, I feel the 360 has a good sized face.
No complaints.
Battery Life:
My watch started with the older KKW22 build. I was getting around 5% battery use per hour with moderate use. After updating to KGW42N I get 2-3% battery use per hour. I get ~50 emails a day with a handful of texts and calls. Always on mode is off.
Much bettery battery life then I was expecting. Outlasts my Nexus 5 easily.
TI OMAP SoC:
The Moto360 uses the Droid X's CPU. While disappointing that the watch has such old tech in it, I definitely don't feel any sluggishness. That's not to say the animations aren't occasionally choppy- they are. But with no other Android Wear watch to compare it to I can't say if this is the CPU's fault. What I can say is not the CPU's fault is the speed in which programs open, this seems to be tied to the bluetooth connection quality.
I would prefer new tech but the watch does not feel slow.
Voice Commands (OK Google):
It's passible. Not really any different then my phone and probably because it's using my phone to process the commands. It hasn't been an annoyance going off accidentally.
No complaints.
The display:
I don't like the bezel that cuts the bottom of the circle, but that's not what this section is about. The 205ppi screen is not amazing. I can see the pixels but it's not a showstopper or a distraction. The job is done, text is readable and nothing more. I live in Sunny California, and viewing the screen in daylight is possible but you still want to put your hand over the watch. The light sensor works well enough to change lighting conditions but will occasionally be a bit slow- comparable to any android phone out there.
Not bad, not good. Wish the direct sunlight viewing was better.
Android Wear:
I wish I could turn Google Now voice command off. I wish I could do a lot of things actually. Android Wear is clearly still in early development and it shows. The backgrounds for cards do not have an appropriate resolution and look terrible on a 205ppi screen. Text will overlap other text in some areas, spacing is off, this is a UI nightmare in places. The ethereal feel of all the components as a whole is rough. This is not a refined product. It's functional and that's it.
It's rough and I would not recommend it to the masses.
Moto Specific Software:
I wish I could turn off the pedometer. I wish I could stop the watch from taking my pulse every 5 minutes. The heart monitor also says that I reach my heart activity goal after a few hours of sitting. That said I do like the Moto heart rate app over the stock fit app.
The gesture to turn on the screen works very well. The update to KGW42N seems to have made it a bit more sensitive. There are many times where the watch will turn on when I wasn't trying to get in on but very very few times will it not turn on when I want it to.
It's nice but the mandatory health monitoring is a negative and not very accutrate.
Overall impressions:
It's a very nice watch. Android Wear as a whole has some issues but the Moto360 showcases it very well. I do wish it used an OLED screen so I could always have it on.

I agree with your "Out of Box" impression. I'm pretty sure that it's attempting to download and install the update, which is taking more power than the charger is giving it. Since this wasn't likely a scenario that existed during testing, I'm sure it slipped through, but this is definitely something that they need to fix. Maybe they should check for battery level BEFORE they check for updates.
I'm not sure I agree with your "OK Google" section. Well, I don't disagree, but in my experience it's so hit-and-miss that it ever even recognizes the phrase that I've gotten much more used to just tapping the screen. IF it hears the "OK Google," it seems to work fine, but it seems much happier ignoring me. (...and yes, I know it's not supposed to work when dimmed... I'm only talking about when it's not.)
Once I turned off the "Fit" card, I never saw any health-monitoring functions again, unless I wanted to. Have you turned that off? (Just left-swipe the "Steps" card, until you get to settings.)
I also hoped for an OLED screen, hoping for something that worked much more like the Moto-X's active display. This one seems less reactive, and honestly, while it looks nice, especially in bright-ish light, the LCD isn't helping their battery situation, which they really should have seen coming. Motorola has been making some solid phone hardware lately, even though I still wouldn't trade my Nexus 5 in for anything they make. (Wireless charging, Moto... you know... that thing that STILL sets your watch apart? How about we look at putting that in your phones, hmm?)
I don't know. I love my Moto 360. I just kind of expected more.

The rounds of reviews I have seen have tempered my "must-have-now" to I really want the next generation of android wear watches when we get 20 nm chips and the companies learn a few lessons on this generation.

Same boat here. It's passable. The nicest smart WATCH around but may not be the nicest SMART watch around if you get my gist. Out of box same. Horrible experience. I am a really really techie guy and it took multiple tries and multiple charging attempts to get it to sync for the first time and it forced me to charge to 100% before it would update. Ah well. With zero instructions moto must have assumed only nerds would be buying this thing.
I kind of want to return it but at the same time I really like the idea of it. The notifications are cool and I love replying to texts without having to touch my phone.
