But apparently, its just a developer thing

Because most other phones have a froyo kernel source to start with. Damn the flaming it could be done its possible, but by the time someone wrote the drivers for the Epic from scratch or edited the ones from eclair, we would have been given froyo source. So the answer is it's possible, but why do all that work when it its being done for us. Now if the source hits and we dont see a work in progress its cause the few epic devs there are dont feel like it/ or dont have the time. On a positive note the epic is fairly new, and with more people buying them, I'm sure it will only get better for us.

Google released their generic gingerbread. There are many things that have to be modified or built specifically for our phones that aren't in google's code, like drivers and kernel modules. Our phones aren't the generic standard that gingerbread was built for.
Serious question...
As the Epic is the first Android phone I've rooted I've not experienced the Cyanogenmod ROM?
What makes it so great to want it so badly in the forums?
I mean we have great ROMs like Midnight, SRF, Frankenstien, Bonsai? (sorry if I didnt mention the other great ROMs available just didn't want to sit here and name them all as there are alot!)
So can someone give opinions on why it is so awesome?
Its based on gingerbread and was built from the source code.... We have a beta version for the epic... I flashed it a couple months ago and kept it for 2 days just to check it out... You should give it a shot...

I would give it a shot but I need it to be fully functional haha as I use the features that are broken
it is the hyped but up so much but it lives up to the hype.
If you were to tell someone four or five years ago. That a group of developers were going to take on a project to deliver a true open source experience and environment with nightly builds on a mobile phone they would have laughed at you. They would have laughed at you more when you tell him about this that this development team would be able to push Operating systems updates faster than manufactures of the phone itself.
The cyanogen mod is completely built from source so it does not include bloatware and no overlay
I for one love cyanogen mod not only does it add needed features, if theres an problem its discussed openly and the maintainer will actually let you know whats going on, if a fix is coming or its just totally borked. whereas with the telco or manufacturer they tell you that its not an issue and lie to you

Cyanogenmod, as stated above, is built from the ground up using source providing a true AOSP experience. This gives us the advantages of a fully custom and functional ROM without the disadvantages of having to wait for manufacturers to push out updates and having to wait for them ever so long. What makes it stand out from the other ROMS still is that since it is built from source, the ROM is being specifically built for our device, which will in return will take advantage of our phones unique hardware/capabilities to deliver an even richer ROM experience. Bottom line, once we get Cyanogenmod fully functioning on our Epics, that's when I will say th Epic has lived up to its true potential

Probably because you didn't read the post right also. CyanogenMod does not include ANY Google apps. There is a flash-able zip that has all of them for you to install.
Google doesn't allow them to include it in their ROM, but (as said) you can flash them.
What is the holdup with Cyanogenmon, for the Epic?
What is different about the source available for our phone, then the source available for the EVO? That allowed it to be ported to the EVO so much quicker??
Cyanogen mod is the fastest and lightest rom there is. There is also a bunch of really awesome cosmetic features such as you can change any of the drop down toggles and add them. The themes that you can get for cyanogen are awesome I don't remember some of the other features but it also has amazing battery life so that's why it is the most sought after rom. The slow down is samsungs propriatary drivers and the manpower to do this quickly but once they either have this kernel booting or we get official gb it will come faster quoting nullghost one of the developers on the cm7 team for the epic.

from what i know, the cm7 team is trying to port over a Nexus kernel to the Epic but are having troubles at the moment doing so. once the kernel is up and running tho, everything should move along much smoother. Once GB source drops, that should also help the devs out immensely.
Alright sorry to post this ridiculously noob question to ask, but whats the current word on an ICS port for the Epic. In no way am I asking for an eta, and I'm not trying to rush any devs, I'm just purely asking because i haven't seen much through searching the inter-webs and the only thread on it here got closed due to some arguments.

The inter-webz & general thread aren't the place to look.
Check out the development section for the E4GT. There has been a port of the latest SGSII international ICS but we do not have a working kernel. Dev's are working on it and there is no ETA.
There are a couple of reports of different devs working on ICS but nothing usable yet. We don't even have cm7 do to a mix of arrogance, naivety, and politics.
However, my gut feeling says we are included as part of the official launch of CM9.

not quite true. We have a very well working cm7 kang. Only thing missing from it is GPS and a few minor bugs. It even has 911 calling patch. Just not on xda because of as you said politics. Its up on another big dev board though.

I've tried the kang and I liked it but it was too unstable to be my daily driver. I should say we don't have official CM7 but hopefully the Android community will band to together and give us CM junkies our sweet, sweet fix.

Just saw it got posted, i may try it when I have a couple days to really test it.
i was looking for new roms for my girl's droid 2 global on rootzwiki the other day and found out about these AOSP ICS Gummy Roms. They're made by a pretty reputable team that includes JRummy (maker of the best root app Rom Toolbox) and they seem to piece together the best parts of AOKP, CM9, and MIUI, so I became very interested in getting this ****.
Maybe I'm just out of the loop and it's really popular, but I've seen nothing about it here. Anyway, since they have pretty up-to-date ROMs for the NS4G and more-so the Fascinate, I thought maybe we could get a working version? And I know how epic devs love to give us as many ICS Rom options as possible...
here's the link to the forum that has all the newest Gummy ROM releases - http://rootzwiki.com/forum/406-releases/
Looks cool even the name makes me wanna have it lol I saw its available for the fascinate so that should help.

You still cherry-pick the cm team (kang) if from source. My kernel is mostly "kanged " from Ezekeel and Team Glitch and it is built from source.

Hmmm..so I got it running on the droid global. 1st thing you notice? Bootup sound is possibly the most irritating thing I've ever heard in my life. The rom itself is pretty solid though. Very quick..much snappier than aokp on the global. However, customization is not as thorough as I expected. There's actually LESS customizable features than on standard aokp or cm9 w/ reloaded mod..though it DOES have a Wimax toggle, which is cool (but weird since the global does not have wimax), and a few things you can't do on cm9 or aokp. All in all id say it might be worth checking out on the epic since it really is pretty quick and has a wimax toggle, but besides that, little is different from other ics roms.

If you guys want to run this ROM, you can just copy app and framework from it to cm9 from the fascinate version. However, if you want to not piss off the cm team, it'd probably be best not to release it, since its pretty much stealing their ROM. And don't bite the hand that feeds you.

isn't that what "open source" is all about? encouraging "stealing" essentially? no one is making money off of "stealing" cm's work or taking money away from the cm team...i don't get it. all this would do is further the experience and provde more options to epic owners.

I agree with you completely on this. Its the point of open source. Just based on my experiences on porting miui, some of their devs are not too keen on the idea of us copying their files in winzip. Just trying to save you from some of the drama I've faced.

It's not all of them, just a select few. Some are very nice and helpful, like UberPinguin and mkasick.
Open source means open source. Everyone (even including the cm team) needs to realize this and get over it. The cm team, or any other dev are by no means required to do this work, as they don't get paid for it. People are not required to pay them for their work, but choose to through donations sometimes. The starters of cm don't whine about people kanging their rom to try to get it working on other devices. It's what we did at first before our cm team was even officially part of cm. No one seems to mind borrowing bits and pieces from other devices, or damn near everything from a source of one original dev who created this and shared it openly, with all, with absolutely no complaints or ****s to give. Just because they've put in so much work on it, they do not own it, and they never have. The only thing that matters is showing respect. Credit to our cm team for porting most/almost all of this, but not without help from many other sources, and the original and also huge contribution from those who started the cm project and have been so selfless and sharing with it.
The point of open source is to not care. To share everything we have freely so that "anything" that is possible can be done. If someone wants to change a framework and some apps, add in some scripts and kernel tweaks, or a custom kernel, call it a rom and release it, they are allowed. That is what every rom before now has been. Android with Samsung's code, with tweaks. No one before now has built an OS for our device completely from the ground up. Everyone acts more high and mighty than they are. The only difference here is that instead of it being the stock software, it's software someone else built, our device's team ported, and now tries to lay claim over.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I must agree. If some cm team (god love them) members want to cause a ruckus over people sharing with open source, then switch over to improving iphones and their closed source.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
ok now back to the topic...any rebels wana take a crack at gummy and post it??
So to go back off topic and throw my two cents in.
I think its more of them wanting people to learn to do it the proper way.
Marcus, for example, did this with MIUI and has continued to do so for a while.
He is rather young just yet, and has a TON of potential to get in and learn the real code.
Smali is machine code. Smali is rather hard to explain, read, and visualize.
Kanging by winzip is damn easy file coping. But if you run into bugs, how do you fix it?
Smali code editing? Copy DIFFERENT files over? That's quite impossible and is harder than it needs to be.
The CM9 Devs, I'm sure, do not give a rats ass what you do with their official .zips.
What they do care about is learning and growing the community.
I feel they gave you both, Marcus and xBox, a hard time because they want you to learn the correct tools and the proper process... Not for them, but for the community and yourselves.
You both get into learning C++, Java, etc... You both will make outstanding Devs. You'll help yourselves, the CM9 team, and the community.
That's my opinion. If its totally off base, oh well. I am not speaking for the team. This has not been discussed with me. I have merely been reading what's been available on the forums. Take it or leave it... They want you to learn
I just got a sgs2.. and well the aosp game is kinda ridiculous on this device... props to the devs who's provided the options they were able to on this device but where are the rest of the roms at?
expect to see some more aosp comin from me here in the next month or so
EDIT
JUST SO EVERYONE KNOWS I MEANT NO DISRESPECT AT ALL.. I EVEN CREDITED THE DEVS WGO BROUGHT SOME GREAT ROMS TO THIS DEVICE.. I just want people to know I'm here to bring more to the table.. I'm guessing there is a major hurdle to overcome to bring aosp to this device since I'm not seeing a lot of it.. but I'm up for the task.. and I'll simply let my work speak for itself..
If you have an issue bring it to my attention but please dont harass me for stating that I wanna contribute to this device.. I don't want a bad rep at all and I hope you all will enjoy the work I produce
Only complaint on AOSP roms is that data speeds don't seem to be up to par compared to stock Touchwiz. Hopefully once Samsung releases the latest ICS source things get better since FI03 fixed the slow 4g speeds that haunted previous ICS builds.

Everyones different though, just for me I tried them all (ran AOSP roms for the last 3-4 months), 3g seems a lot better on Twizz especially at work where it's a very low signal area. And 4g is no contest between the two.
So since my post mysteriously vanished... I'll sum it up for those that missed it.

I dont release half of my roms because I focus more on one but show me a sprint device with more recent aosp than us besides the flagships that are basically included in aosp to begin with. think sprint will let you exchange your device for one with a community you can respect for a few months til you're ready. Maybe including some aosp options will provide somewhat a better understanding of ur purpose for this thread.
