[Q] SOS Boot Loop on clean wiped install - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been using SOS for a while now on my Evo 4G - loving it, except that once a day (haven't checked to see if it's at the same time each day) my Evo goes into a boot loop. Thought it might be an app of some setting I had on my Evo, until I installed this ROM on my wife's Evo 4G, and her's is doing it too (with minimal apps installed).
Can anyone offer either some debugging tool I can install to see what might be causing it, or otherwise offer some advise?
Many thanks,
Eric "GuitarEC"
P.S. - Did see something in the forums about Evos not playing nice with CPU clock settings lower than 128MHz, so I already uninstalled any CPU throttling. Still have the issue. Also, I wiped my wife's phone 3 times (cache included) 3 times in Recovery before flashing the ROM...

You for one can't clock any lower than 128 Mhz. What recovery are you using, because it may not be wiping correctly.

Try switching to amon ra or twrp; clockwork doesn't wipe correctly for some users. You'll be good to go after that.

Flashed RA Recovery v 2.3. Wiped my phone (several times) and installed fresh version of SOS (v1.9.0.7). Recovered apps and data from Titanium Backup.
...now e wait and see...
Thank you for your help.

Should be all good to go, and no prob man.

Okay, after all that, my phone just went into another boot loop. Was listening to Google Music at the time, this isn't the only app I'm running when it has done this in the past, but i figure I'd rather give more info than needed to help me diagnose this.
Also, can anyone recommend either a debugging tool, or a system logger/dump per that could shed some light on what's going on?
Thanks,

What I observe: Phone freezes for a few seconds then goes straight to boot animation (Skips White "HTC Evo 4G"). After a short period (usually less than 45 seconds) boot animation freezes and restarts boot animation. Only way to snap some sense (no pun intended) back into it is to pull the battery. Then it boots up normally.

Hmmm....you got AmonRa so that's good...you may wanna
go into recovery
wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache
fix permissions (uid mismatch)
reboot
let it chill for a minute
ALONE
And see how that does sometimes ROMs will need to take a couple minutes to do its thing when 1st installed see if it helps
TrevE Supporter!

K. Brb... I'll give this a try.

Okay. Followed steps as prescribed - let my phone sit for about 30 minutes afterwards. We'll see if this helps or not after about a day or two. I'm hoping so, but another minor problem I've noticed is still present (keyboard preferences are cleared after reboot).
Now the waiting begins...

Lemme know if anything (no offense) I'll walk you through my installation process no offense intended its jus sometimes things happen that are user error and it sucks cuz I've actually done some pretty bad moves here there

None taken at all. I have some prior Linux experience, but I've only been doing the root thing for about a month.
In fact, if you could spell out your install process, I'll compare it with mine and see if there was anything i flubbed.

Sure.
Download Rom
Download Gapps (If Needed)
Download Kernel (In Case I dislike Stock Later)
Boot To Recovery
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Fix uid mismatch
Create Backup
Go back
Flash zip from SD
Flash Kings Format All (x2)
Go Back
Wipe
WIPE EVERYTHING MYSELF (x2)
Except SD Card
Except Battery Stats
Except Rotate
Go Back
Flash zip from SD
Flash ROM
Flash Gapps (If Needed)
Go Back
Wipe
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Fix uid mismatch
Reboot
Let it do its thing for about 5 or 10 mins
Unlock
Finish setup process
TrevE Supporter!

Looks like that did the trick. Wiped the Cache and Dalvik a couple of times each, fixed permissions and let the phone cook for about 15 after reboot. No boot loops over the weekend, and I applied the fix to my wife's Evo as well.
Thank you so much for the quick responses, and the patience for this relative noob. :^)

HELP; EVO is bricked

Need the expertise of the XDA mindset here to help a guy out, please.
I was running Myn's RL5, and loving it. Well I wanted to delete it and install it fresh again, and with some different Kernel. So I did the standard full wipe, of data, dalvik, and cache, and ran that three different times, and then installed the Calkulin's format_all. So I did all that, and then go to install Myn's RLS-5, first before anything else, I then reboot, but it just hangs on the htc EVO 4g start screen, forever
I pull the battery, and go into recovery screen, wipe data again, clear everything, then go to Nan backup, and it reinstall's my previous saved backup from last week, but then again it just hangs at the load screen where it shows the htc EVO 4G logo forever until I pull the battery again.
ive learned to reflash the kernel specified to whatever rom that nandroid backup uses. when i cant boot... get it?
How long do you let it sit at the white screen?i have had mine hang for several minutes before it gets passed it.

Ok...crosses finger lets see how this goes ? At the system updating screen, the little folder with arrow pointing down to green Droid. Did not get that far the last time.
I will give it 15min...and report back.
also skip the radio update if u can, if it doesnt work
do cal format all, wiope dalvik cache, then flash ROM, then kernel, let phone boot up, after that put phone into recovery and flash radio

It worked Followed the instructions and back on
Followed the advice to the "t' and back on like a charm. Went pretty fast and smooth after doing all those steps one after the other, then rebooted, and bam, back in action.
Only thing I noticed is that my PRI version is 1.90_003 isn't that bad ? Should I flash the "EVO_PRI_1.77_003" ?

[Q] Bootloop Issues

HTC Evo Hardware 003
Sprint Labeled Extended Battery
Rooted using Unrevoked
Used Myn RLS 4 & 5 flawlessly.
Switch to MIUI about a month ago.
No overclocking was used for MIUI or RLS 5. RLS 4 I purchased it for support only and removed it after a few days.
Had to flash Sav v1.6 to keep the reboots to a minimum of 1.5-3 days. Once it started the first reboot I would have to pull the battery wait a few minutes.
Saved a Nandroid (since has been removed from sdcard) after the reboots started and went back to the Myn RLS 5, bootloops persisted there also.
Back to MIUI after a few over there thought it was kernel issues (which seemed to alleviate some of the bootloop)
Today after my 4th battery pull from bootloop issues I flashed Myn Z. Bootloops persisted.
At one point I pulled the sdcard, formatted it and myn booted up just fine. Stayed up until I rebooted to put the sdcard back in with the ROM, recovery, and PC36IMG's back in the sdcard.
With sdcard out of not I get bootloops now.
Bootloops again.
Installing clarification:
Used Caulkins Format All
Have RA v2.3
Wiped factory reset twice, wiped cache and davlik twice
With MIUI the wifi was set to never.
I am seriously at a loss here. Has anyone else found a solution to this issue? If I unroot, will that bring me back to stock everything so I can try this process over from the beginning? Will it carry over whatever might be an issue with me and just have a stock ROM that bootloops? If you need more information I can attempt to recall it, or pull it from the phone. Keep in mind I cant keep a ROM running for more than 5-15 seconds before bootloops so if it is something from there we might be out of luck.
Thank you kindly in advance.
I would suggest backing the rom up, then go a clean install, wipe everything, that tends to clear bootlooping. Also [I don't use] but on MIUI, you have to set your wifi sleep policy to never, or you will get bootloops.

Now that would be something I havent tried since coming back from MIUI. I will try Netarchy's real fast and see if that had a good result.

Caulkins Format All
Factory Reset wipe x2
cache x2
davlik x2
reboot into recovery
flash Warm Z

Sounds good again, but I thought warm Z was a stand alone?
Bootloops before it gets to Warm Z boot animation. 6 times.
used SBC-net-4.2.2-more-havs-v7
Out of curiousity, why are you flashing a previous rom before warm z? And you would have to flash the kernel after the rom because the rom will over write the kernel.

Wait... got it going.
How long have you been letting it sit? Myn's roms have tended to take a few minutes to boot up...8 minutes for me the one time I had to install to update my PRL, and I thought I was bootlooping.
Bootloop.
Rebooting into recovery and flashing kernel.

Not the case but good question. It doesnt "sit". It actually goes back to the white HTC EVO 4G boot screen. Vibrates each time it does that...

[Q] Synergy ROM issues

Posting here since I cannot yet post to the actual ROM forum.
I'm running the Synergy ROM, RC1 and have a couple of issues. First though, thanks to the DEVs for all of their time and efforts, this looks to be a very good ROM!
I've been through most of the 200+ pages on the ROM's thread and did not see any information that may help (except turning off auto rotate of the home screen), but it's possible I missed.
The main issues I have are slow response issues. They are:
Slow response when I pull down the navigation bar.
Slow response when hitting one of the soft buttons (i.e., the + button to launch the app specified by the settings in Rosie).
Very slow response when I come out of a game that was in landscape mode. It takes a couple of seconds for the screen to switch from landscape back to portrait (after flipping the phone to portrait) and then another few seconds for it to put all the icons back on the home screen (home screen is blank when I come out of the game). I did turn auto rotate off and that has helped, but was wondering why there was such slow response without it.
Google apps such as Maps and Calendar that are started by another application, but do not shut down the starting app exists. This, of course, drains the battery and was not an issue on the stock rom.
When I flashed the rom, I did do a factory reset and erased all other caches. My apps and app data (not system data) were restored via TB.
I have also frozen the following apps via TB:
Flash
All live wall paper apps
Stocks
Flickr
FM Radio
News
Stocks
Smoke & Visualization Wallpapers
Voice Dialer
Voice Search
Thanks!
Mike

Absolutely correct. On top of this, the other reason you may be seeing slow response would be the fact that this is a very large rom, and takes up more space in your usable memory than most roms. What I have done to *somewhat* alleviate this issue when I'm running the synergy rom is to move all of the apps that I can (except for those that I use widgets from) to the SD card.
Just my recommendation

My thought was that when restoring an app, such as WSOP Texas Hold'em, I also wanted to restore the data so it restored games won, amount of money, etc.
Is that data what you are saying I should lose when flashing new roms?
Thanks,
Mike

Quite a few of my apps are on the SD card. I have 313MB free on the internal storage. Should that be enough to reduce some of the lag.

HELP!!! I flashed synergy rom last night and today, it goes to the boot animation screen and freezes. It just shows the synergy rom bouncing around and wont go anywhere from there. I tried doing a recovery through bootloader, but it wont let me move down from fastboot. Did I just brick my phone or is there any other way to get past this screen? can i plug my sdcard into the computer and delete this boot animation and if so, where would I find it? Please help, it would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

If you can boot into recovery, you did not brick your phone.
I've had this problem before and I don't even use Titanium. I also had plenty of free space on internal. Ram never seems to free up though. It's the strangest thing.

Does anyone else have issues with anything that requires data syncing (Facebook, Twitter, SMS, etc) stopping unexpectedly? It seems to happen at around 30% battery and the only way I've consistantly stopped the problem is to wipe and reflash Synergy Rom.
Any ideas?
Yea Idk what's going on with it after about an hour I would get android.process has stopped and needs to force close. I can't even use any app as that constantly pops up. Great ROM but unusable at this point.
Did you do a complete wipe before you installed it. Most of the issues I have seen arise because a complete wipe has not been performed. If you like the rom, do a complete wipe (factory, partition and dalvik) and reflash it.

This is after a full wipe, twice. Once the battery gets to a certain point, everything starts crashing and never recovers no matter what I do. Battery pull, full charge, cold restart. Nothing works.
Edit: I've also noticed that the GPS is locked on and I cannot shut it off.

Yea I also did a full wipe two different times. I didn't notice it happening once the battery gets to a point I just know that after an hour or so of use it was unusable.
1. If you use DualRomX2 would that possibly speed it up? Because doesnt it install Roms on EMMC?
2. Im also really frustrated by the slow response on alot of things like right rosie button and notification pulldown.
3. Video recording for me is just awful. Im not sure about actual quality but the framerate for sure is horrible. I compared a video i shot on stock and with Synergy and there is a HUGE difference. Synergy video being much worse.
Great Rom just plenty of little annoyances.
Synergy ROM loading issue
Flashed Synergy ROM last week and was very impressed. However, saw where 3.0 Sense items were missing and realized after reading several other posts that the carousel +widgets.zip should have been loaded with the ROM. So I reloaded the ROM and widgets through AMON-RA Recovery (Followed all of the original instructions I had followed the first time I loaded the ROM). Everything looked fine until I rebooted the system. Now Synergy ROM start-up screen loops over and over. At this rate the fill battery I started with will run out, and I'm not sure what will happen at that point.
Anyone have any suggestions for this issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Options:
a) Pull your battery, boot into recovery, format data/wipe cache/dalvik cache/format boot/format system, & flash a different rom.
b) Pull your battery, boot into recovery, format data/wipe cache/dalvik cache/format boot/format system, flash Synergy again, reboot.
c) Pull your battery then turn on your phone like normal.
d) Pull your battery then boot into recovery, wipe cache/wipe dalvik cache, then boot into rom.
Edit: I don't use Amon_Ra, when I refer to "recovery" I was referring to CWM. Hopefully someone with experience comments in regards to Amon_Ra recovery.
Yeah I don't have too many issues with it... last night it got kinda squirrely so I fixed permissions in recovery and re-flashed the Warm Theme without wiping any data, it's been all good ever since.
The ROM is my daily driver... I really do think that these issues are app-related. There is something that certain apps do that this ROM is not built for, I'm just not sure what it is. It's been real good to me overall though, battery life and all.

SlimSnoopOS, as it turned out I pulled the battery and rebooted into Recovery after a few hours, but thanks for the direction. These were the exact things I did. The reason I used AMON-RA instead of CWM is that Synergy says in a number of places that it only loads with AMON-Ra (and I'm a coward!),
Awesome, glad everything is functional again!

[Q] HTC EVO 4G with Fresh EVO 4.3.3 always goes to loading screen

I have an EVO 4G with version 2.3.3 running Fresh EVO 4.3.3 and I am having a problem when I leave an app using my home button. The Freshhh logo appears and the phone goes to my home screen but says it is loading for about 40 seconds. Does this every time I leave an app or somewhere other than my home screen. Just started about 1 month ago and I have been running 4.3.3 for about 6 months. I have cleared cashe but not done a wipe. Trying to avoid that.
I am currently having the same problem with the Fresh 4.3.3 ROM...Mine will randomly just get stuck in the boot loop cycle with the Fresh logo and the only way to fix it is to pull the battery. Other than that it's a great app and needless to say it has become such an issue that I am looking for another ROM to run

After running a rom for soo long it starts to get cluttered, wether you wipe cache and delvik or not,you might need to backup everything with some kind of app backup program then do a complete wipe, except the sd card, unless you decide to partition your sd card, which is the best way to solve this issue in the future.

Okay so to bite on the noob question just back everything up with say MyBackUp Pro (what I use) and then wipe all the things in recovery and that should fix it? I use No Frills CPU program as well....wondering what the min/max should be set at or if it's even necessary? I followed this thread to root my phone since I'm not exactly a computer whiz.

Thanks to everyone for the replies..
don't really want to wipe my phone AGAIN. Anyone know Flipz and maybe want to ask him. I dont want to ask him on his site because he is so busy but i am looking for a permanent fix to this.
I found the Express ROM and Anthrax kernel and love it!
partition
Diablo, do you mean partition it and install only Fresh on part of it and then install apps and other crap on the other part? how do i do that or can you point me toward a thread?
The thread I posted a link to has instructions for partitioning your SD card
Sounds like sense restarts. Try searching for V6 supercharger by zepplinrox. Or any other script such as snuffed out script. They will set your oom groupings and keep your launcher from having to restart all the time

[Q] stuck on splash screen.. please help

OK, as the title says, my phone is stuck on the splash screen (nyan cat) and i am freaking out, i only have very basic knowledge of CWM and hardly anything else.
I was running GummyNex v1.0.1 and the stock kernel that came with that.
Now what i did to get myself into this mess!
I was playing around in jrummy16's ROM toolbox and installed a font onto my phone, then when i did the reboot it told me to do after installing the font it just hung on the nyan cat splash screen for over 30 minutes, after that i pulled the battery in fear.
Next step i did was reboot into fastboot then clockwork recovery and wipe the cache, tried rebooting, never ending nyan again.
Again into CWM and wiped data/factory reset and wipe dalvik, the same story.
Now i found someone who had the same problem online, but he luckily wasn't an idiot and didn't remove all ROMs from his internal memory a few nights before. flashing a new ROM fixed his problem, but unfortunately i cant because i dont have any in my memory and i have no idea howcome i don't have a nandroid backup anymore, i did one of my last ROM but its not there (more stupidity)
can anyone please advise on what to do next? I am in dire need of help.
is there anyway i can get a ROM + GApps onto my phone when all i can access is CWM?
Thankyou for any help
Cant you put your SD into another phone or an SD reader? Had the same problem myself in the past so I know how does it feel, but it's your only chance.
EDIT: damn just saw its a nexus so my post is nonsense, I hope your GNexus fellas can provide you a solution. I think you can to put back stock rom with your computer, after you put your phone in APX mode.

Panic section...about pushing a .zip
I hope you have ADB set up...
If not, read post 1 and set yourself up.
The AIO installer will be more than enough (and will take you 3 minutes max) for this purpose.
