[Q] What are my options for updating and unrevoked??? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need some help and am sure that some of you have the answers, because I don't fully understand all of this and what my options are, or what the best solution is. I have looked through the different threads and found bits and pieces of some of this, but nothing that specifically answered my situation. I will try to put out all of the pertinent info, but please let me know your thoughts, etc...
I have an HTC Evo. I have root access, from unrevoked 2. Here are the current settings/stats from my phone setup/start screen (or whatever it's called when you hold down the volume button and put the battery in):
Android Version 2.2
Baseband Version 2.15.00.09.01
Software Number 3.29.651.5
Model Number PC36100
I don't care anything about custom roms, etc. The only thing that I did the unrevoked for is to do the wireless tethering and being able to freeze some of the sprint apps. The Wireless tethering is the main need for the root, though. I definitely don't want to lose that.
I haven't done any OTA updates from Sprint since I ran unrevoked. I read at the time not to do them because I might lose root access. It has been over a year since I have updated Android, and my phone is doing some odd things, and acting a litte wierd in some instances. I would also like to upgrade to the newest Android release, and probably to Ice Cream Sandwich, when it comes out. However, I know that it usually takes a little bit after these releases come out for the developers to gain root. I feel like there are probably a good bit of updates and new features that Android has added in the last year that I am missing out on.
So, should I just stick with what I have, so as not to lose root? Or, should I just try the latest OTA update and see what happens? Also, when they release ICS to the Evo, if I run that update, will I lose root? I see that unrevoked has updated to version 3, and that there's also a unrevoked forever. Which of these is what I would need?
Lastly, if I am going to run these updates, do I need to 'un-root' first?
Thank you all so much for any suggestions, helpful hints, etc. I'd rather ask on the front end instead of having to post an 'emergency' thread.
Thanks!

All you need to do is go in the developers section here and download yourself a stock rooted 2.3 rom and flash it. No need to lose root or reroot. Just make sure you wipe everything except the sdcard.

Ok, thanks. I'll check that out. Again, as a dummy on some of this stuff, is it worth it time-wise to go ahead and do this now, or should I wait until the devs come up with an Evo release of ICS? Just wondering what your opinions on that would be.
Thanks again!

If you have flashed unrevoked forever then doing any ota updates should not affect your s-off status but doing ota updates are not recommended on rooted phones.
Support TrevE!!

Sprint is not going to release an Ice Cream Sandwich update for the EVO 4g.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium

I know that they're not going to release it for the Evo, but I've seen it mentioned several places that the developers here will probably create a version for the Evo. I'm just wondering if it makes sense to do the upgrade to 2.3 now, since I'm still on 2.2, or if you all would suggest just waiting to do it until there's a version of ICS to update to...
(I know that some of you are thinking that the update is super simple and easy, but I'm not as familiar with it, so doing something like this takes me forever so that I don't screw up something)
So.....thoughts!???
Thanks!

Yes flash a stock rooted Ginger bread rom and you will not be disappointed. It will be a while for the ics roms to be close to bug free. Flash away and have a nice day.

Exactly what he said and there are stock gingerbread roms here on xda that you can flash and that will give you a rooted stock gingerbread rom. It will be just like you get a brand new evo out of the box except it has root access. Flasher the stock rom just like you would any other rom through recovery. It's very easy and good luck man.

You guys are awesome!
I don't have any idea how to flash a ROM, but I've seen a couple of instructions and FAQs on here that I can follow to learn about that.
One thing that I haven't been able to really get a feel for yet is, how do I know what I'm looking for on a ROM? You both mention a stock, rooted gingerbread ROMs, is there a specific one that you're thinking of? I see different names (swagged out, Sns gingerbread, sense, etc) but don't know what these names mean. How can I tell which one is just basic, but will allow me to do two things, 1-wireless tether and 2- delete the extra crap that sprint puts on the phone????
I'm assuming that I can find these just by looking here in the "Evo 4G Android Development" forum? And hope to also be able to find the steps on how to flash a rom there also...
Thanks again!

I Found the classic rom and fresh Evo rom...
One thing that I was just thinking about... How do I recover all of the apps that I have downloaded? I have the full version of titanium backup, and just ran the full backup of apps and data. Do I recover them from that? Or Is there a better or different way?

Radio Updates with ROM's?

So I have had the EVO since launch day. Came from using a Blackberry. I really must say the EVO rocks. Only complaint thus far is the battery life as I am a heavy phone user. Sedio here I come.
Anyway I used Unrevoked to root my phone about a week after I bought it. I know Unrevoked is not a real root per say, but it did what I needed, allowed me access to using wireless teather. I have kept everything stock for the most part. I have not accepted any updates what so ever since the day I used Unrevoked. I now feel its time to become a real EVO user and root my phone the right way. I am going to use simple root as it seems to be a easy way for me to root as I am still new to this Android thing and dont really want to brick my phone.
I have been researching the ROM's (thanks to all the great dev's out there and their hard work!!!)
Still not sure which one I will try once I root my phone as there are lots to choose from, but I am sure I will find one that rocks.
Now for my question regarding the radio updates.
Do most ROM's come with the radio updates already or is this something I have update in addition to installing a new ROM?
If I have to update the radio's where can I find the latest and greatest updates at?
I guess I am going to have this same question about the Kernal's as well. Do most ROM's come with the Kernal needed or will I have to update as well?
Thanks for the help guys. In the meanwhile I will continue to read and try to make use of the search tool on the site.
Thanks
Ralhaz
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Just flash from recovery. Roms dont include them as far as I know. Flashing a new rom wont overwrite the radio either. Most roms come with the stock HTC kernel. Some use one of netarchy's or king's kernels. Just flash those over the rom. Flashing new custom roms will overwrite your current kernel with the one included in the rom.
Just a warning: When you flash a radio, the phone will reboot a couple of times before it's done. Just let it go until you're at the lock screen waiting to swipe in. Never pull the battery if you think it is stuck. Otherwise, there's really not much danger in flashing new ROMs, radios, or kernels. Just make your backup before you do anything, wipe from recovery before you flash ROMs, and do your flashing from recovery, don't mess with ROM Manager.
Thanks for the input guys. I will attempt to root and flash a ROM maybe later tonight or tomorrow.
So just so I am clear, most ROM's will have the Kernal needed so not much to worry about there.
But what about the Radio updates? Are they included with the ROM's? or do I have do update them separate?
If I do have to update them separate where can I find the latest and greatest at?
Thanks again for all your help
Ralhaz
Unrevoked 3 is real root and gives nand unlocked, add forever and you're good to go with any ROM you like.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
BTW if you simple root you will loose the PRI you have and get 1.34
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Roms will not include the latest radios. There is a thread in the development forum that has all of the latest 3g and Wimax radios.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Thank so much for the info. Got the updated radio files.
I guess my last question would be this.
If I simple root and my PRI goes down to 1.34 is this a problem?
Not sure I understand what the PRI is all about just yet.
Thanks

[Q] Unrevoked question

So I am a little new to android coming from my Winmobile phone. Just picked up an incredible and want to root just for the ability to remove some of the bloatware but I am not sure I want to go to a custome rom yet.
Once I run unrevoked will I still have my stock rom or will I be blown back to a flat nothing added rom?
I have been doing some searching around but haven't really found this specific answer.
Thanks.
You'll have your stock rom its up to you todo the rest.

Rooted EVO, want to install Gingerbread... Basic ROM?

Alright, so I have honestly looked every where and read as much as I can.
I have a Rooted EVO with the stock ROM. I really want to update to Gingerbread but am very confused. I do not want to lose my rooted status and I do not want a ROM with a bunch of MODS. I just want a simple stock ROM with Gingerbread and Root access. Is this possible. I am confused by everything I read and do not want to brick my phone.
Will updating my phone with the OTA while Rooted ruin my phone? Will I be able to keep my root status?
Thanks!

There are two different rooted versions (with very minor modifications) of the new stock Gingerbread ROM (anything with the labeled "Sense" is based on HTC's ROM's, though some of them are based on ROM's from other phones), both on the first page of threads in this forum. Look for "4.22.651.2" in the thread subject--and yes, those will keep your phone rooted and S-OFF. I believe there's a third thread with a method of updating without a flash, and yet another with minor modifications to the stock ROM (the Titanium-X ROM).
By contrast, anything that says "AOSP" is based on the Android Open Source Project, and therefore quite different from an HTC ROM, though all functions work on many of them (but there is some debate on how well the various radios work on AOSP ROM's).
Okay maybe I had that coming or maybe I just didn't phrase the question right.
I looked at the page linked above before I posted this and I read it all and still was confused. I guess I am looking for the idiots guide to doing this. I don't feel confident enough on my own.
I DID read, ALOT, and I looked at all the posts that are suggested when posting a new thread.

They are referring to the fact that this thread is for development only. For future reference you can avoid being flamed by posting in the Q&A section.
Don't worry to much about these guys, they lurk and jump at the chance to show off their supremacy over noobs.

Alright will do!
I thought the Q&A was for other basic questions. My error.
Do you have the latest recovery installed of RA or Clockwork ?
I have clockwork i believe. I just did what I think is a nandroid backup, I went into recovery and did backup.
That's always smart so you are doing good so far. What you want to do now is download the zip file and place it on your SD card. You can download it directly on your phone if its easier for you (wifi recommended). Just follow the link posted by dodgerbluehero above and I would recommend starting with the odexed version.
Now go into recovery and choose flash from zip - then - choose zip on SD card. Navigate to the downloaded file and hit the power button to select it and again to confirm. It can take a few minutes to write the files so just leave it alone. It will tell you when it's done and you can reboot.
These instructions are from my memory but should be pretty close. You would typically want to wipe but the dev says not to worry about it if you are coming from a stock rom.
Give it a shot, you will be fine. Pm me if you have any questions because the mods will probably close this thread soon. Good luck!

what confuses me is where it says "firmware". Do I still have to install that or just the ROM??
The firmware is optional. You can install the rom and then decide if you want to flash the radio as well afterwards.
After you flash, the first boot sometimes takes a little while. Just let it do it's thing. You will be happily surprised how easy this actually is to do.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
but what benefit does it have? is the radio i have not as good?
Some people get better results with signal/3g speeds/wimax. The consensus seems to be that it varies by phone and area.
You can flash the rom without also flashing the radio and be just fine. Stop worrying and take the leap.
On the other hand this may not be for you.

Well I appreciate the time you spent explaining it. I just don't have the money to buy a new phone if I brick it. I rooted my phone on my own but never did any rom updates. I am going to try it once it downloads. Thank you again.
Oh one more thing, be sure that your phone has plenty of charge to make it through the flash and restart or that could lead to bricking your phone.

Thanks to everyone for keeping this going it has helped me so much. One quick question I have installed the ROM and the firmware but I see in the apps things like the blockbuster app and wanted to remove it. I cant seem to uninstall it so I thought it wasn't rooted properly. I tried using Unrevoked3 on it but it failed stating
Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
am I forgetting something simple or do I have to try and downgrade the firmware?
Thanks,

I have S off. Is OTA still possible?

Hey everyone, I have S off. What Happens if I accept the OTA update from Verizon? Will the phone brick or anything or install just fine? I had root at one point but I did something with HTC Sync and I lost root and I'm thinking of just going the OTA route now.
thanks
Accepting the OTA is completely pointless when you have quality roms to flash, which in turn will be lightyears better then any OTA you recieve from any carrier, on any brand of phone. Just my 2 cents.

Good point but I was also wondering the same thing as the op. Everyone knows roms are better but no Rom is without any bugs. I'm new to this phone and not used to sense UI that's why I'd like a good answer to the op's question. I'm currently on 2.2.1 and want to root and if possible do the ota. Then I can remove the bloat apps, get used to the phone some more, and then move on to some roms.

Go into the Android development thread, flash rmks gingersense ROM, it is completely identical to 2.3.3 but with some bloated removed, but there is a link there to put those apps back if u want and u will have COMPLETELY stock. Then there is a post later in that thread by rmk that gives u a patch to update to 2.3.4, again, IDENTICAL to stock, so why not do that, works great, what I did, and don't even have to worry bout this question u guys seem to always ponder? This will always b the case, there will b a way to flash to latest version like this, especially thanks to rmk, who is awesome, now, go forth, and flash my children! Wait, that sounded so wrong...

Restore DI2 Completely To Stock In Prep For ICS?

Please excuse anything I say that may seem laughable, ridiculous, or wrong, as I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to these things.
I just recently found out that the Droid Incredible 2 is receiving an official Ice Cream Sandwhich update soon, but I'm rooted (used downgrade and revolutionary method), and have clockwork mod recovery flashed. I'm on Android 2.3.3. I want to return my phone to spotless, brick free stock in order to prepare for the ICS update.
Reading up on this, the closest I've come is finding a guide which involves flashing a stock hboot and downgrading to froyo and updating to gingerbread from there (can't post a link as a new user). I just want to know, will doing this remove everything, including CWM Recovery, and return it to stock? I fear that if even if I were to succeed at changing the hboot, I'd be stuck with CWM Recovery or super user or something.
If not, can I get instructions on how to return my phone to stock in preparation for ICS? I don't want to do this, try and update, and brick my phone because remnants of CWM or Revolutionary or Superuser remain on my phone.
Thanks to any reply in advance!

why not wait till we get the ota and someone makes a rom put of it for us (like the same day) root is always better than stock.

I was considering that possibility also. An official rom could be flashed with cwm and would work just as well as an official ota update, yes?
Sorry, I'm very clueless when it comes to stuff like this.

I'm going to be honest though, the only reason I rooted in the first place was to freeze bloatware (not flash anything), I actually like HTC Sense and would feel much more at ease if I could just get rid of root and go back to the way my phone was right out the box.

Ah, thanks for the info. If I'm unable to find a way to get back to stock to do an ota (I prefer official, I have OCD over these things), I'll definitely check it out. Thanks!
Couple things, first, while the Inc2 will get ICS, it's anyone's guess when that'll happen, and I seriously doubt it'll be in anyone's idea of "soon". As it needs to clear Verizon, and there haven't been any leaks yet, I would be shocked if we got an OTA before fall. Second, an OTA will likely include a new hboot which would almost certainly address the exploit Revolutionary used to gain s-off. That could leave you with HTC's unlock as your only way to get root back, and HTC's unlock means you're forfeiting your warranty. Maybe you're ok with that, maybe not.
Honestly, if it were me, I'd download all the files and instructions from the RootzWiki restore to stock thread and put them somewhere for safe keeping. When the OTA comes out, you could restore then and receive it, or certainly by that time there will be roms available based on leaks of the OTA.
If you don't mind all the bloat, don't need root and are willing to potentially loose root permanently, then go ahead and restore to stock now, but I guarantee you'd be months premature if the sole purpose is the ICS OTA.
As for your concern about the restore leaving a trace of root or Clockwork... It won't. Your phone will be 100% stock - hboot, recovery, kernel and rom.

One more thing. From what I've read/heard the Official Dinc II ICS will be Sense 3.6, where as the One V port that is being worked on is Sense 4.0.
I don't know what the differences are, but obviously 4.0 is 0.4 better than 3.6.

Yeah, I don't want to go back to stock now, but rather wait until the update is close to release and restore to stock then. I'd rather not flash a custom from, as I'm kinda OCD about "official" and stuff. I don't mind losing rooting capabilities after the ics update.
As for the rootzwiki restore to stock thread, does it include directions specificially for the Inc 2, or is returning to stock a universal method for all devices? Don't I need specific files, tools, and direction for my phone and its firmware? Can you point me in the direction on where I can find these directions and files? I'm such a noob at this, and I apologize for not knowing anything. I just don't want to stumble across a thread where I download a wrong file and flash something bad and I'm screwed over for good.

Is this the thread you were referring to, Chris? It seems sorta risky, but I'm willing to do it if I have a fighting chance. But AlpharevX, I'm assuming they mean Inc2's running 2.3.3 that were most likely rooted using the downgrade method with revolutionary? If so, I'd try it out.
Just a quick question, would there possibly be any roms that are identical to an official OTA update for the Inc2 when it comes out?
Apart from my obsessive desire to have an official firmware, I'm concerned about the camera. Excuse me if I'm wrong, but when I flashed cyanogenmod, the camera didn't seem as good as it was on stock htc sense. Not sure if I was just seeing things or not.

Yes, that's the thread, and it's specifically for the Inc2. AlpharevX and Revolutionary are the same things, so those instructions will work for both.
And yea, I agree about the camera. I recently flashed AndyBone Stock and the camera is definitely better. A shame because I really like stock CM7. I'm really hoping the CM9 based camera is better.
Thank you all for all the help! I'll try and do it once I sort out another problem of mine...
Restoring to stock can be risky. Who wants to brick there device right before the ics ota? But that's just my opinion. Theres a video showing you how to unroot your device by Nat3mil. Type his name in youtube and go to his channel. The video is one of his first videos so it will be on the bottom. He also has a guide showing you how to root, I used it for my phone. Someone will have an ota rooted ics Rom the first day (FYI)
PS. While your rooted you should at least try different Roms. It can be very enjoyable. I know you will like it.

@ChrisDDD: the CM9 camera isn't very good imo. It doesn't seem to focus as well as stock, and when you zoom in on your pictures taken, they are grainy.
