MHL HDMI Adapter - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Just got my OEM MHL HDMI Adapter (Ebay $11...US seller for OEM, that's a steal)...it's pretty spectacular...just streamed the watch espn app onto the TV without a cable box...impressive. The adapter essentially mirrors your phone with everything you do including orientation. Only downside is that you need to hook up a charger to the device to enable the adapter...but with the battery drain you could expect without the charger I guess it makes sense.

Is it smooth while playing videos? I've been hesitant because I hear it's choppy. But if you guys say it ain't, I think I'll give it a shot.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

It depends on what you're playing...an HD recorded video...smooth. I was streaming Watch ESPN and it was a little pixelated, but that was how it was on the phone.
I decided to jump in when I saw the OEM one for $11, up to you though (it is pretty cool being able to whip that out and show off your phone at a friends house)
I did find some other auctions this guys is selling at that price...I hope it's ok that I post them
if this link sells out I guess just look in his shop for more

I took a look, but the pic on the ebay link doesn't show where the charger would go. Does it plug in somewhere on the hdmi end of the adapter?

nvm, found one on amazon that shows where it plugs in...
I'd post a pic for others to see, but my n00b status prevents it

^^Same here. $17 IIRC. works well. have to plug charger into adapter before plugging into phone. a shame it wont work without a charger.
has anyone tried and external USB battery with it? would be more convenient.

The one I got off eBay (the linked one) is exactly the same as the picture posted above, including the instructions. It even came with the protective plastic wrap (brand new) around the shiny plastic pieces.
The charger plugs into the HDMI side of the HDMI adapter. (Makes a "T")
I've actually taken a microUSB cable and plugged it into my XBOX 360 and I'm using that to power the phone/adapter.

Note that it won't play the videos you've taken with the phone. Unless your tv supports the format.
But everything else like mp3's, pics, youtube, games, and whatever else you have.
I just simply stream to my ps3 or my TV.

something cheap, you don't need a "high-end" cable for this application as the phone doesn't need a high-speed bandwith HDMI cable

I also noticed that after i insert the hdmi cable..the touch response of the fone is kinda laggy.. Any one have the same issue?

Had a similar issue. Found that one of my cables didn't work. Reported and tried a different cable and it worked. I suggest testing the audio to see if the cable is at least working that way. If so, try rebooting the phone. If that doesn't work try a different cable. Seems to be a bit picky. Question for other users, when running a video, does your cable stop charging? Sorta sucks that we need to plug in charger yet it doesn't even charge.

Just got one today from a friend (he had 2 and just gave me one). It works great, I played family Guy from the media hub and it played flawless.

First and foremost make sure you have a charger plugged in...use an OEM one before switching to something else to verify it works.
Just reboot the phone, then plug in the HDMI cable to the adapter and give it a second...it usually take 3-10 seconds to pop up on the screen. If you are having problems with the stream just unplug the 3 sections at the HDMI hub (where it plugs into the phone, where the charger plugs in, and where the HDMI plugs in) 1 at a time, this has worked for me as if I'm flipping between inputs on the TV sometimes the phone isn't instantly read. Also I read in the Dev forum the anyone using the Cyanogen Rom currently is unable to stream via HDMI. I'm using Bombardier and its working like buttah.

anyone know where i can buy one in canada? lol. all the ebay links i've seen ship to states only!

[Q] Desktop Sync and Charge Cradle With HDMI Out

Hello folks,
I found this dock on the mobilefun website.
It says it has HDMI, and i'm verry curious if this realy works! Did someone bought this, or can somebody confirm that this dork works?
Or should i buy this dock instead and buy a MHL cable with it to connect it to my TV?
No, it seemed not to be compatible with any case, so I won't buy~~~

Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I would buy the 1st one with HDMI built-in if your going to output to these device types. The 2rd unit is good for chaging a second battery.
What the OP was saying its not suited for them as it will not fit with a case on the SGS2. in the dock!
Thanks for the link as I was just about to place an order for the 2rd unit...

I think with this genuine samsung battery cradle dock you just have to use a 5pin mini usb to hdmi cable
sent from my 2.3.3|dxkg3 DJGalaxy S2
I saw that dock the other day too and Im very tempted, just need to wait until pay day at the end of the week!
If you're going to be using an MHL cable, I think you might as well buy that dock, works out cheaper than buying a dock and MHL cable separately, plus it looks kinda cool
Really want to read a review of it though as well, if anybody has bought one, any info would be massively appreciated.
well, ive bought a spare battery so the 2-in-1 charger would be verry handy, but on the other side, a dock with hdmi output would be awesome to, i just dont know if it works because the dock should have an "build-in mhl system" if you know what i mean.. so im waiting till someone reviews the first dock i posted

I was about to order the original Samsung MHL > HDMI adapter from Amazon, but I'll hold off on the order as what I really want is a dock that has it build it..
Thanks and sorry if this has been answered already ( I have been searching t'internet for a few hours for an answer.. )

i ordered one from nicecans last night, its £17.99 delivered and seems Kidigi branded and looks the same one from OP first link. says stock from 11th Oct so will see if it actually comes through.
Thanks Zulm,
I'd be interested if you can post a quick review when you get it, hopefully you'll have it in a day or 2.
I've just had a look on their site and it does look very nice and if it works for you, then I'll get the same one.

Hmm nothing today either. I wish I had searched for the retailer before ordering, they don't sound the most trusted deliverer of goods!

Just a warning for anyone else!
Well well wonders never cease, it turns up today!
..it works! Come with a USB and power adapter but this doesn't have to be used I connected it to my Dell monitor via a standard USB cable that came with the S2. My Dell has no sound out so could not test that and it is only 1680x1050 native res but HMDI did work. I will test on my Sony TV later on and see how that goes.
---------- Post added at 02:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:02 PM ----------
Few annoying things I've found already
- when connected via HMDI to a non-native 1080p display it seems to constantly try to sync with the display with the picture disappearing for a few second then reappearing. It doesn't seem to stabilize even after leaving it for a while. This happens on my Dell monitor and my Sony HDTV (D4000) when connected via HDMI both are non-1080p devices. On my other Samsung 1080p TV the TV-out picture is solid and stable and doesn't have these sync issues. I guess this is probably the case for all MHL cables out there and not necessarily a problem with this dock but problem with firmware/software? Is there TV out configuration tool that can be used to sort these HMDI sync issues?
- the USB on the dock is for charge only - it doesn't get recognized on your PC when connected by USB.

The PC doesn't recognize it all, on the back of the dock it says "DC in 5V" - so I assume the USB is used to power the dock only.

Others photos have been made with Gnex's with flash:
I've been using regular boards pins : used some scissors to reduce their width (did that randomly until it was fitting inside the lego bricks).
Then used a hammer to make two holes on top of a lego brick, evaluated where holes have to be only with eyes. First brick was a fail and gap between pins was too wide, 2nd try was good.
Linked the 2 wires from a wall charger to the pins (need to attach 'em more seriously (with some duct tape) as it's only wrapped around atm).
Then tested and it's charging instantly... (info on phone show that it's "usb charging")
Will probably add some floor so it'll maintains pins in position even if I move around the dock
Yay ;-)
He he, cool :-D
WIN!!

It seems you always get usb charging if u use the pogo pins, so no choice about that.
For the desk mode, well night clock (free app) can turn the phone automatically into a clock when charged and support landscape view... imho it's still pretty limited.
But I guess this lego dock can sit on the desk at my office to get some juice during day (+ that will make coworkers talk).
Anyway I'll probably get a desktop official dock whenever they are out (I'm not 100% sure if my dock is risk-free (use of board pins, use of a wall charger for pogo pins) : any input on risks will be welcome ;p

My mistake. I thought it was you in another thread that said they were going to make a dock out out of Legos.
As for the pogos only charging at USB rates, that seems a little short sighted on Samsung's part. There are numerous threads on here about using navigation/LTE on USB charging and the charger can't keep up. Maybe that's why Verizon's car dock does not have pogo pins and opts for the USB connection.

Likewise i've just seen the price of the adapter, what on earth!? There's no way i'm paying that I assumed it was much the same deal as MHL to microusb and fairly low cost.
Is there really not a non-Samsung version that is significantly cheaper? or maybe a DIY method!
As far as I can tell (from buying cables that were unsuitable) the only cable that will work to connect your Note to your tv is the HDTV adapter
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-tab-accessories/EPL-3PHPBEGXAR
or similar for your country. PCWorld in the UK sell them for £12.99 (epl-3phpbeg) if you can find stock or a salesperson who actually knows what you are asking for. I found mine in the tv section with all the Smart tv accessories.
That PC World price must be for the wrong item but searching for that code has brought up a handful of retailers selling it for near £22. Still too much imo when it's clearly not too different from the countless <£5 microusb versions!
Maybe i'll come across a used one some day.

They aren't on the website. Best to call a store. Or visit. Found mine in the Samsung Smart tv accessories section, nowhere near the computer department.
I have that adapter and just bought the (more expensive) Allshare Cast Dongle.
With the adapter one should keep in mind that a (more or less) long HDMI cable is necessary to connect the adapter to the TV/beamer/monitor.
The Dongle works wireless and can be just put beside the display device.
I'm looking for something I could connect my tab to HDMI, maybe a USB, and could charge it

How well does the connector work? is this the same story like on galaxy s3, that the framerate is halfed down, or does it run at 30fps, cause I dont want to throw away another 25 euros for an adapter, that doesnt even work properly. -.-
ive looked at the media docks for the 10" Tabs on amazon and their TV out potential but I havent found anything conclusive in regards to their performance with the Notes.
the galaxy tab (og galaxy tab) dock is only $18 on amazon and works fine with the gn101. just gotta be modded to prop it up.

USB "filter", make USB ports look like high power chargers... it works

Recently bought this adapter from amazon, a mfg named +pwr. It makes your lower power (computer and non samsung ac adapter) usb ports look like full power ports. Using it removes the red X from the charging icon and also allows the device to draw the max power available on the port - it's not going to magically make a 1 amp usb port draw 2 amps - but it will allow the device to draw max instead of a lower rate due to low power charging mode.
I've tested this on my PC, in my car and on an older Samsung ac adapter.
Well worth the 5 bucks I'd say. I'm planning to get one for each of my charge points and leave them installed.

Just be careful. There are adapters out there that were of an older design, primarily for the issue with iOS devices. Those won't work (you'll still see the red x). The one from Amazon works (I've tested it) but I can't comment on others. I'd suggest making sure that it at least explicitly states newer Samsung devices to be safe.
I don't suppose anyone knows of anyone in the UK doing these ? They are quoting 6-8 weeks for delivery to UK.
I've done a quick search, but am wary of knock-offs as OP rightly warned about. Would like to get something like this that people have tried and tested, but would prefer not to have to wait 2 months to get it !
Its by the same company. Think itll be the same?

The company PWR+ is selling these direct on eBay for 5.90 with free shipping. On amazon you have to pay 4.99 for shipping.

Not quite the same as this fits on the other end, but if you have a micro USB cable it works perfectly. Tried and tested on a standard USB charger, PC and laptop. Arrived in two days.

There's some resistors between the VBus+/GND and the shorted D+/D- lines that Samsung uses to make their chargers proprietary. See here.
Using this adapter - would it be possible to connect a portable HDD to the Note 10.1, without the use of a powered USB hub?

No, in fact this adapter eliminates all USB data connections.

HDMI out on AOSP ROMs

Just curious if anyone knows how to do this. I have a usb to hdmi adapter which I used for hdmi out on the stock Rom, but I have not figured out a kernel/Rom or program which lets me use it on aosp. Any help would be appreciated.

I have mhl cable and it works with vanilla rootbox.
Works for me as well but I'm only getting 720p output for games and apps, haven't tried vids yet, but can anyone confirm that they get 1080p while running an app or game?

I'm using rootbox myself and the cable I use isn't working. Is the cable you're using one continuous cable, or is it an adapter which u plug a usb cable into one end which changes the other end to hdmi?
Its a straight through with battery supply. Got it off amazon for $13
Mine has a slot for a usb charger. Fuzzy does your cable output 1080p for games and apps?
I will get back to you on that after I put my son to bed

That sounds like the same cable I'm using. But mine doesn't output anything. Is there a setting on the ROM somewhere I'm missing to make it display?

I didn't do anything except plug it in and checked out movie I have on phone and I DL HD game from playstore and everything worked. If you go to amazon and search for mhl cable. the one I have has spot to plug in charge to mhl cable and like I said b4 was like $13.

Is this the same cable you're using? I got this one from Amazon myself in November when I bought my phone.

Never mind, I got mine to work. Seems it needs the power supply attached for it to work on aosp. But I remember using it without the power supply on stock, oh well as long as it works I'm cool.
