Kinda noob question, how to update my xperia play phone without the risk of bricking it. I've seen post that they have updated their phone and got their phone bricked.
My play is a new one. Nothing changed. Didn't do anything, just new, bought a week ago.
I have no updates done yet. Just scared of my phone getting bricked.
Connect it to the computer ; when prompted install pc companion. Once it is all setup check for updates, follow the procedure and it will update the phone for you.
just do a ota update

Could someone help me? I plug the usb in and it says driver not installed properly. The is the Xperia play. It is rooted with the latest gingerbreak.
Update: Solved
Looks like there was a problem with the driver, so I manually uninstalled the drivers via "Device and Printers" in the start menu, then I restarted my computer. Then I plugged in my phone and this time it said installing Xperia Play instead of what it was doing before, which was installing some other driver, I don't remember what it came up as initially, but it wasn't recognizing it as the Xperia Play. Now it is. That's it folks.
Nice to hear mate Could you also update the thread tittle to solved and maybe say how you solved it, that might help others?
Regards Dousan...
If you solve somthing you should post your solution, so you can help other people with the same problem

He'll be back when the next thing goes wrong !
Sorry for the necro-bump but I'm having the same issue. Phone was working ok and was able to connect to pc but then I uninstalled a PSXperia game and rebooted the phone, after that the MTP driver no longer works, I'm only able to connect via MSC.
- Tried the solution above with no luck
- Tried connectin the phone in another PC and i get the same error.
- Downloaded the PC Companion app from Sony and selected the "How to connect" option. It tried to install the drivers but got a message saying "An error in the communication between your phone and computer was discovered"
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Usually mine takes a few minutes before it will connect in Media Transfer Mode. Yes, you heard it right, a few MINUTES! But eventually, if it's been too long, I unplug it and try again. It usually connects if you simply just wait (way too) long enough.
Well I managed to get it working again by using the Sony companion software, it reinstalled everything back as it was when I got it. I made a backup but first I'm going to see if rooting the phone had something to do with it.

After searching the forums i still havent found a solution.
The problem is i decided to unlock the bootloader using Sony on my Arc S a day ago.
Now when i connect the USB it will not connect to the MSC or MTP though the computer pings and sony companion comes up but says the usual reboot etc.
I have tried all the different combinations of turning USB debug and other things on and off but to no avail.
Has anyone else had this problems and fixed it?
Try reinstalling PC companion with the option in phone connection.

is your camera and home button not functioning too ? reflash back using flashtool or if it doesn't work, use wotanserver..
I now have it running after using Wotanserver twice :s
The only problem now is it wont root (Bootloader is still unloacked, did it via Sony)?
I tried Doomlord but it says read only as it tries to do it.
I dont know how to use flashtools as for some reason it wont install on my computer (possible Kasperski stopping this).
How do you reinstall the ADB drivers cos i think that may be the problem.
Try the link at this post
Managed to get flash tools installed and that rooted it
It now wont update OTA so wondered if sony companion will update but will flash tools root after?
Lots of thanks to everyone for there help seems i have question after question lol.
Just when i think i know what i'm doing i get another phone and it starts again. Sticking with sony now though even if they dont have Gorrilla glass
you can't update via Sony Companion / OTA because you have unlocked bootloader..
Hey all,
Yesterday I was about to flash a new ROM on my wifes Xperia S. She had an old ICS rom and I decided to go for the PAC MAN JB 4.2.2 ROM. Seemed ok.
I own a SGS2 myself so I consider myself a total noob when it comes to the Sony.
I know CWM works on on the XS and I am pretty sure I installed it when I romed it last time. Although I didn't remember how to enter CWM mode so I installed it again through that .bat file that comes with it.
I downloaded the ROM and the GAPPS and copied both to the phone. And now I thought I was set and went for it. Of course I did a Nandroid backup before and also from within the phone a full backup in Backup & Restore. Bootloader is unlocked by the way.
So now I boot into CWM and I do a full wipe/factory reset. I clear the cache and dalvik and also I format the system as he guides us to do in his installation video.
I then installed the rom or at least tried. Got the status 7 together with some error I can't remember.
I read then that people had issues downloading the rom with google chrome which sounds pretty far fetched but I decided to do what other did and downloaded the rom from firefox.
Then within CWM I thought to start the USB and copy it directly in CWM since I already had reset the phone and didn't want to go through the "new phone" routine. But the USB in CWM didn't work so I had to restart the phone.
It then got stuck on the initial SONY logo screen and I'm stuck there now.
I have installed the Flash tool from SONY coz I read in another thread that the only way out is to install stock rom. However when I connect the phone holding volume down windows 8 always say that the USB device is not recognized. I have of course rebooted the PC after.
I'm going to try this on my Windows 7 PC as well later after work but I dread I will be stuck there as well.
Can anyone shed some light on how I can get my wifes Xperia S to be recognized by her Windows 8 laptop? Or have I bricked her phone?
I have thought many times that I bricked my SGS2 but always came out on top, I don't want to lose this battle either.
if it says "Unknown Devices" when you plug the phone to the computer, try change an USB line or change a computer
if it says "Unable to install the driver" or another something like this when you plug the phone to the computer, try install the Flashtool driver
...any screenshots?
Windows 8 gives a balloon tip saying exactly "USB Device not recognized". And I did install the Flashtool to get the driver but I guess I still miss the correct driver here.
I will do some more troubleshooting after work. I just thought maybe someone had similar problem and had a quick and easy solution.
It also happend to me, just turn it off and flash stock firmware with flashtool (select all under wipe)

The issue is not actually the "stuck on SONY logo". The issue is that the computer wont recognize the phone when I connect through USB.
What did you use to get the correct driver?
Ok I actually managed to get it connected on my Windows 7 PC.
I installed Emma (Flashtool) and it installed something but I'm not sure really what happened to be honest. Light on the phone was green and it installed 4.0.4 ICS.
It was a success after about 217 seconds but after that the phone didn't do anything. Stayed with green light and when I disconnected it it could not be started at all.
Maybe it doesn't have enough power to start up. It is on 220V charge now so lets see what will happen with it.

Good news y'all.
All it needed after using Emma was some juice. Now it is back to it's normal self. And I'm not going to ROM it anymore. Soon JB will be officially out for XS.
True!! When I was a noob, I tried to flash cyanogrnmod on my galaxy ace (it was a year ago) and I stuck in bootloop. Idk what to do and I regret it, from that day I never flash any rom. But this year I flash xzxperience on acro s and it works but not so happy and then I flash stock firmware to normal. And I regret because i ve unlocked bootloader!! And now BE is not working anymore.

Hello, I have the chance of getting an xperia play that is "bricked" for a 50 dollar cheap-ass generic android tablet. What the owner says is that he bought it bricked, and when he plugs it to the charger it shows a red light, then a yellow one after a while. I told him to connect the xperia to the pc while holding the back/search key and he told me that windows displayed "windows cannot recognize usb device" I am wondering if it's just that he doesn't have the flash drivers installed and the device just needs to get a ftf flash or is it that the previous owner tried to unlock bootloaders and failed misserably? If that's the case, can I bring it back to life? I need more information. Thanks in advance
Well the play is recognized by the computer as it says cannot recognize. And it lights up so he most likely just needs to install the proper files on his computer. Like you said then you can flash a Rom and kernel and it should work great.

So just got this xperia s lt26i, it was locked to orange! yes not EE but orange, i got in touch with EE and they nicely provided required credit to cover cost of official network unlock by sony and bam a day later i got the email for unlock, so all good right? not so much.
the phone is on 2.3.7. which is rather dated. im aware ther is a 4x update available via xperia companion or SUS is menna work too.
they dont
my phone just wont be recognised by XC or flashtool.
when i try put phone in fastboot (vol down and plug in while power off) it goes green light then pc trys to install s1 download driver but then fails saying device unplugged just as its starting to say install driver after searching preconfigured drivers.
ive tried various usb leads, install and uninstall XC. even older sony companions and nada. its doin me head in coz the wife is whining that she can only do this n that coz its old android urgo the apps are old also.
i tried SUS and that says it cant even connect to the net. the handset says its on the latest firmware in settings so cant update ther?
im at a loss. im normall pretty savvy with android (to a point) but this i cant suss. and im getting mad lol.
i mean is odin a thing? can it even be used to stick official roms on this thing? i dunno but dont wanna brick it at the same time
bb ver-m8660-aaabqolym-314005t 1
