Hi everyone,
I would like to add some video into by Dash, but I don't know what is the best format to use.
What value to use in each setting to have a smooth video playback?
Sampling rate: ?
Bit Rate: ?
Frame Rate: ?
Video Size: ?
Thank all for the input

I just use Vio Video converter from thepiratebay.org. It converts all videos in a format specific to the particular phone. Look up vio video converter on google.

Thank skyline247 for the quick reply.
I will look that up

Just as an addition Mono low bitrate sound to keep down on data and make easier to read.
Also the framerate should be the same as original source can be found via right click properties on original file. "other wise you can get output like 2-1 pulldown does on frames"
i think the best video format in terms of size first is flv, which r youtube videos format once u download them in the flv format just put them in ur Dash
I use Youtube Video downloader its a free tool to download nd convert youtube videos
if you want perfect dvd quality .avi files are the way to go. play em' using tcpmp. however .avi files tend to be large files so that's the only drawback (of course not unless you have an 8 gig like me =)
i encode them in avi using virtualdub or tmpgenc
bitrate 288, 2 pass encoding,
320x 240
for proper aspect ratio use this
http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/aspect_ratio/
put source ratio, then put 320, get the 4th parameter !
audio - 128kbps or 96kbps (songs or speech), cbr, 32mhz sampling
i don't care for size, cause i got 8gb card in it
first get the tcpmp then the pocket divx encoder its free and encode your videos on xvid in avi containers ive been able to play 1 gig movies with a bitrate around 1000 and a resolution of 640 * 270 and audio at 128 but you dont really need that much quality because the dash only has a screen of 320 * 240 soo just resise the video and play with the bitrate till you get what you want ohhh and dont use h 264 it requires more prossesing because the compression its more complex soo you wiil get a very low framerate really the best is xvid hope this helps
Thank everyone for your great and valuable information. I will do on your advice
Thank all
I'm looking for a good converter which converts .avi to .mp4. I was using this one for my Touch Diamond 2 but I think the bitrate and stuff could be higher now when I got a Desire with better specs.
I used this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
I use Format Factory, it does a pretty good job and is free.

Look at Xilisoft software. Not free but good for pretty much any video/audio convrrsion.

I have compared different converters and I recommend Convert-tune to download and convert video and audio easily.
It converts music and movies, and also burn files on CDs. The converter is
easy to install and use.
when using Xilisoft program i had many audio/video , synchronization problems ...

Stick with that converter. It's awesome and there is no point in increasing the bitrate because the screen resolution and dimensions are the same. Increasing the bitrate will not show higher quality pictures.
AVS Video converter 6 is hands down the best converter i have used. Its not free, but its a good investment because it pretty much converts anything you throw at it. Even .mkv.
I use Handbrake on the Mac, think there is a PC version as well, works great.
+1 for Handbrake
You can pretty much just use the iPhone preset. You might need a laptop with some horsepower but it's worth using the h264 codec to reduce file size

You could just use RockPlayerBase to play the AVI instead of waiting for it to encode?
Tried using handbrake but neither Rock or the native player will recognise the m4v or mp4 file - any suggestions?

Why would you wanna use RockPlayer to watch .mp4? Just don't encode the videos.. leave them .avi or whatever, RockPlayer will play it. If you have .mp4 from beginning just use the inbuilt player.
Because I'm trying to save space and cram as many in to the memory card as I can - it's for a 6 week holiday so I want to take as much as I can. 700MB / file is un-necessarily large for a phone?
Well, I got a 32GB SD card right now and that's alooooot of movies.. I don't know what you got but converting to mp4 isn't saving so much space.
I thought a 700MB filecould be halved quite easily without any noticeable loss in quality, perhaps not? I want to take about 30 files with us, so a 16GB card or two won't be enough. We'd need 20 - 25GB of micro SD storage! With that much to carry around for an extended holiday, any saving of space would be substantial. The native player does seem to play the .avi files the files are currently stored in, however it seems a waste to keep them in their current size for such a small screen?

Impossible unless of course the "video" happens to be a plain black image

Get mx player and play a avi movie and it starts laggings so I change the codec at top right corner to sw and the video was playing perfectly no lag.

I'm trying for a while now to convert movies to be played on my desire.Right now I am trying using handbrake. However it just won't seem to play whatever I have thrown at it.
My average convert settings are something like this:
An H.264 .mp4 file @ 2mbps bitrate with mp3 or AAC audio @128kbps,resolution 800x480 or 1280x720.
I have also tried to play each converted video with RockPlayer but nothing changes.
Bear in mind that the only size limitation for me right now is fat32's 4GB limit.I use a Kingston 16GB class 10 SD.
Many many thanks in advance!
Strange, I've got an Avatar rip that I dl'ed and put straight onto the Desire that played with no problems, looks awesome as well. Plays through the default player or through Rockplayer as well

Yeah,I am also trying this with Avatar.I have downloaded two versions, one 1080p that obviously doesn't play at all,and a 720p one that plays but is really really laggy.
Can you tell me more info on the copy of Avatar that plays ok on your device?
I do it in two steps:
1. PocketDivXEncoder, just to have a "clean" AVI in 640x480.
2. SuperC, no resize (I find PocketDivXEncoder better for resizing).
Video MP4, Codec MPEG-4, 15 Fps, 768 kbps
Audio AAC-LC, 44100, 2 channels, 128 kbps
Perfect, IMO.

Thanks for the reply my friend but that's not what I'm talkin' about...I want high quality when I watch movies.Strangest thing is that I try to make my videos have the same settings that the Desire uses for the videos taken with its camera. To no avail so far!
Also,if anyone uses handbrake I think it would be a more productive thread!
I'm using AVS Video Converter now and my files works flawlessly. The settings are H.264 [email protected], 720p resolution (or native WVGA, as you like it), up to 8000kbps (without any problem for Desire) bitrate, no CABAC, MP4 ISO v2 container. Handbrake lacks some advanced settings, maybe you should try to change it.
But dude,it's a paid program,Handbrake is free, that's why I use it.I will try to find a cracked version though...
@Pigbrother
Man,can you please share the settings you use for H.264 with me?I encode again and again and, although it does play on the Desire,it lags like ****!
I do a H.264 @3Mbps,but I am confused with the advanced settings of it and probably that's where it all goes fuzzy!
I managed to snatch a copy of Avatar with Handbrake that plays well, but it's MPEG-4 @2Mbps(although it seems that higher would play no prob). But H.264 is better,so I want that if possible!
Here they are.
I'm using the default player with hardcoded subtitles (you can select them in the advanced tab, bottom of the screen)
Dude,this is STRAAAANGE!
Following your instructions and settings pigbrother,I got a small length video(a 1080p trailer of Harry Potter 7 I downloaded from youtube),I converted it according to what settings you used with a 3250kbps bitrate and 720p and it played super smooth while having the best quality I'd ever seen on a mobile device! Then,I converted Avatar with exactly the same settings and it wouldn't play!I tried stock video player,mVideoPlayer and RockPlayer but none worked,it just said it couldn't open the file. The only thing I can think of is that there is some sort of limitation regarding the size of the file to be played(mine was 3,8GB),because the only playing copy of Avatar I got was an exactly 2GB big one I got with Handbrake.
Please guys,If you can think of something help me!
Thanks!
So,guys, this is interesting.I made another copy of Avatar using AVS and I used some higher profile settings(like CABAC) to make an 720p H.264 mp4 file @4Mbps and checked the option to split it in 2000MB files.Total size is about 4,8GB for 3 files and it plays like heaven! The picture of it is the absolute best I've seen until now!
So guys, there is no meaning in disabling all those advanced options as they only give better compression and quality(while making the process of conversion slower however, mine took 7:30 hours with my E8400 Intel Core2Duo).You should only put a limit to the bitrate so that the output file doesn't get bigger than 2GB.
So that's it!Now,if there is any way to make the conversion using the PCs GPU which will make it far faster I'll be happy!

I watch a lot of movies on my phone, no matter which one it is.. I had a iPhone 4, with at least 10 movies... My Galaxy Note had about 6 movies.. Now, I'm about to put a few movies on my Galaxy Note 2 as well..
Just wanted to know what resolution I should convert the video to so that the video size is not too big, and it uses almost the whole screen...
I looked up Wikipedia, and found out the screen resolution is 1280×720.. I use Xilisoft to convert movies, so I'll try this resolution out to see how the videos come out..
Does anyone have any presets they use while converting videos for their Note 2?
I'll post how the quality comes out.
I always use 720x1280 and it looks perfect like an hdtv

what program do you guys use to convert video for the Anroid system.
And with the Note 2.. the box has DIVX written on the side.. so does it need to be transcoded to something special for it to play or does mp4(i think it is) work fine?

I put a blu ray rip of T3 on my Note2. Used mediacoder. Kept video and audio format (1920x1080) but changed to a mp4. Looks really great no stuttering. Only thing was file size 7gb. had to split to fit on sd card.

Since the note 2 screen is 720p I code my movies at 720p too. Mp4 at 2500kbps is fine for 2.35:1 movies. For 16:9 movies you might want to increase the bit rate a little higher. Audio: ac3, or aac at 192 kbps. I really wish note 2 can support dts audio!
Btw isn't it painful to watch movies on the tiny iphone screen?

haha. true.
i have huge hands (not to mention my height, 6 feet 2 inches).. i had been using the Note since April, before switching to the Note 2 earlier this week, and the transition was very smooth..
before the Note, I used (any guesses?) an iPhone 4 32 GB for 2 years..
now, I cant even possibly think of going to a smaller screen, let along an iPhone..
my brother has a Galaxy S3, and I feel even thats puny in my hands (even though the difference between a Note 2 and a S3 is smaller than a Note 2 and an iPhone 4/5)...

720x1280? Isint that something you would do if the video was horizontal?
i converted 6 movies with the following settings on Xilisoft Video Converter, and they are brilliant..
keep in mind i do not use the default video player.. i use MX Player ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad&hl=en ) to watch my videos.. i also use it to watch streaming videos..
i use this because it not only gives me the option to resize videos to fit screen size, but also swiping back and forth on the screen allows me to fast forward and rewind by seconds of my liking, giving me more control..
make sure if you install this, you also install all the free codec types available..
it not only plays formats playable by the Note 2 by default, it plays a host of other formats such as .mkv (if you really really want pretty good quality, and dont care about the size of the video)..
anyways, here are the settings i used on the Xilisoft Video Converter to convert videos for my Note 2 -
Profile - Andriod - Android (320x240) - H.264 Video (you can choose a higher resolution, this gives you a smaller size.. eg. 854x480)
These settings are available on the right panel
Video Size - 1280x720 (videos will be converted to the highest resolution the Note 2 supports)
Video Quality - Normal (you can push it up to High if you want, increasing the size... but if you are already converting a video from a good quality, then there is no need to chance this)
Audio Quality - High (here, i'm willing to accept a size increase by ~100 mb, but normally it wont be that much.. no fun watching a movie with crappy sound quality)...
Going to advanced settings
Zoom - Full (keep aspect ration)
Aspect Ratio - 16:9
Volume - 100% (bump if you your video is not loud enough... may distort the clarity a bit, obviously)..
and there you have it..
Xilisoft
Hello Tutusinghsohi
I am using Xilisoft as well.
They have a preset for Note2 but the bitrate is 4000. So final file is super large. It takes like 5 hours to convert. And if I lower the bitrate, the video will NOT play on the phone.
Please tell me, what bitrate do you use?
Any tips?
Thanks
Julien
I use MeGUI. It's completely free. It took some configuring, but I can convert targeting a specific filesize. I find 2GB is a good target filesize for average length movie with good video quality.

I'm using xilisoft and has a preset already for galaxy note 2. I'm just surprised at the conversion. the movie was 700mb and end conversion became 3gb. it's a bit high for a mobile video IMHO
Transcoding? Ick.
I just throw the mkvs I download straight onto my SD card and play them with no issues. 720p or 1080p.
I've also been using AllShare to throw them up on my 55" Samsung HDTV since my HTPC has been down, works great.
just use VLC media player... if you open the file menu theres an option to convert media files in there. And its free and not spyware like most of those converters around on the internet.

Me too, anyone made any progress in their tries?
I used the handbrake part of the lifehacker guide on ripping blu-rays. http://lifehacker.com/5559007/the-hassle+free-guide-to-ripping-your-blu+ray-collection. Streamed and transcoded over Plex, it works nicely.
I just use the android tablet (on the latest version) and that generates mp4 files that play without issues on my Nexus. Dunno if there are other adjustments for even better quality video.
I may be the oddball here, but I have been finding that the N7 (with MXPlayer or VLC) will play 99% of HD files directly without conversion. There IS the issue of file space, but if your goal is the best video quality and aren't concerned about storage, then playing the original file and not transcoding it seems to be the way to go.
That said, I really can't see the difference between a 1080p and 720p encode, so I DO transcode to save space on the device. I have been using Handbrake with a 720p preset (can't remember what it is at the moment...) and they look great!
The hardware decoder works well up to H.264 high profile level 4.1. From my own tests it will start dropping frames at level 5.0.

Absolutely! MX Player with ffmpeg for decoding multi channel audio works perfect, even when streaming from OTG! :good:
