Hey guys,
I have a Nokia N9 (which uses an SAMOLED display made by samsung), and there have been some users reporting blotches/lines on their screens when in a pitch black room. I found this forum whilst conducting some research, and signed up after finally discovering what the problem actually is
It seems to be with the technology Samsung is using. According to this website, what you are experiencing is called 'mura'.... lines/spots as a result of an uneven current distribution to the OLEDs.....
Unfortunately as i am a new member, i can't post a link to the website.... but essentially, this company offers a technology that makes sure the mura never appear..... If only Samsung used it!!!!
AMOLED displays have two main layers:
An OLED (organic light-emitting diode) layer that emits light.
A backplane, made of TFT (thin-film transistor) circuits that provide current to the OLEDs, thereby controlling their brightness.
Polysilicon backplanes don’t provide uniform current because of manufacturing non-uniformities. Without IGNIS technology, the TFT circuits will provide different current to the OLEDs, which results in lines, spots, and cloudy areas known as “mura”.
IGNIS AdMo-p™ technology uses a patented TFT pixel circuit and driving scheme to compensate for the non-uniform backplane. So the TFT circuits always provide uniform current to the OLEDs, even though the TFTs themselves aren’t uniform. This means the AMOLED display will always show smooth, mura-free images.
Hopefully this gives everyone a bit of closure; I guess it's a case of finding a phone that has the mura to a lesser extent!
Appears for galaxy nexus too. Adjust brightness fix it sonewhat

What he is saying is that the lines and blotches are a manufacture/design issue in the displays of the SGS 2 and apparently the Galaxy Nexus as well. Being that SAMOLED screens are that drastically different from the ALOMED screens on the Vibrant and Galaxy 4G.
To bad Samsung didn't do better testing before making the SAMOLED screens our they would have sorted this out before the phones hit the shelves.

I thought the vibrant had super amoled and the galaxy s 2 has the super amoled plus? If that is the case then they should both use the same basic design?
Btw I think this is the link the OP is talking about

Well since this is a hardware issue like the vibrant's GPS, it is imho more tolerable. I won't be reading the forums in the dark anyways.
For those who want to read in the dark, hopefully a Dev out there can work some magic and get us a software work around, if that is even possible.

I agree it shouldn't be posted in the same section just a few hours apart, not sure what happened there, but the info is helpful.
And what's wrong with advertising for this company? I doubt he works for them and even if he did, who cares? We all advertise for Samsung with every post we make that has a sig saying what phone we use. This is a pretty uniform issue across the board for devices using SAMOLED i.e. Nokia, Samsung, Motorola. If this company has a way to fix it, these companies should utilize their tech.

So if this is a hardware issue...is there anything Supercurio can really do about it (as I know a bunch of users are pitching in to get him a device)? Not trying to start something, I'm just curious

I don't know of he can do anything about it but he has done some spectacular stuff for the vibrant.
The vibrant was hardware and software deficient for the GPS but some devs out there got it working like a champ with some software miss and also if you were willing to take a risk and either bend a few delicate contacts or do some soldering on your phone's mobo.
So can he fix it? We'll see, quite possible I think

I guess I just don't understand how a poorly manufactured physical screen can be adjusted with a software patch, if the screen itself is faulty how can adjusting the graphics rendering put a band aid on an actual physical fault?

I've posted this on several forums, since I haven't seen anyone bring this issue up yet.
Basically, I've noticed on the Phone screen and on the Clock screen, there seems to be this "Light Bleeding" effect near the power button. I went back to the Sprint store and confirmed that it's an issue as their display device had the same problem, and a new device they opened had the same issue. I don't know if it's just a bad batch of phones, or if this is some sort of software issue that'll get addressed in an update.
Anyone notice this?
Erm, dude... This "bleeding" effect means there's a tab there. Just scroll your finger on the tab bar, and *BAM* a new one will appear
Yh lol took me a while to find that out as well. Was looking for the keypad for ages
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
i have light going true just by the home button on back button side. damn
If it truly was light bleed then a screenshot would not show it. As above, it means there's tabs to the right. Grab the tabs and scroll for more
Got the same answer in another forum. Thanks for the quick response. First time using Android coming from BB. I'm sure there will be more things come up that I won't know about.
I know you are a new user, so you didn't know this, but how come sprint staff didn't know this?
this is just a visual effect to signify off screen tabs and not a hardware/software error, should really edit your post to site you made a mistake and made a hasty thread, not to mention the dumb ass reps at Sprint, just shows resellers dont have a clue when it comes to what they are actually selling.
That was funny

I didn't say there was a light leak. I said there was an effect that looked as such. I went through the proper channels (Sprint Corporate Store > Searched Online) and finally I asked in the forum. If that, and asking questions shows stupidity, then your reply can only assert even more ignorance. If you really have nothing to say that deals with the topic, then you'd be better off not replying at all.
Thanks.

I wouldn't be surprised if the blotches and lines are on HTC phones. You'll probably won't see it. Samsung might have set auto brightness too ridiculously low. twenty percent is about the lowest HTC phones can go. I think someone said in a review galaxy nexus suffers from the same problem. Also we seem to get the best end of the stick. Because the Droid razor has the problem the worst.

no offense, but its probably the latter, cause i haven't seen any other devices that DONT have the issue, I've been through 3 myself, and have played with/inspected dozens..... If you dont have the issues, you've got the holy grail bro, hang onto it and be careful not to drop it on the screen, cause if they replace it, it will 99.9% be the blotchy one we all have. Although, i must say, my newest device also has the latest box date and the problem is the least noticeable ive had/seen yet.

Pics please! I'm not requesting this on hopes of proving those wrong who says they have the "perfect" display. Proof of this will help with narrowing down whether this is just "normal" within the way the manufacturer process these displays or it'll prove that there is an inconsistency with these display with certain sgs2 units, which basically will lead to be a defect.
I'm just sayin!
If there's actual proof showing that some Tmobile units do not suffer with these lines and blotches, this will be definite grounds on requesting samsung to fix this issue!

The nexus display just isn't that good. It has a lot of color issues, for example anandtech did point those out in their review. The GN is a great phone, but in no way perfect.

Are you freaking serious? So everything Samsung lets out of the factory is OK and everybody should be happy with the product they ship? Apple people and their fanboyism is starting to seem almost healthy compared to this. The phone costs a premium (at least in here) and I'd like to see premium production quality for my money. Unfortunately that is not the case. Samsung did address the issues in the GIII, but that doesn't fix it for the GN

Well cmon dude people are complaining about screen issues on refurb phones. The fact is, is that the nature of this amoled screen is that it loses its ability to display color over time. In some areas its more prominent because of the nav bar and keyboard being dark/black. Over time though this effect should even out across the screen. So, to the people *****ing about wanting a brand new one, guess what?? You're brand new one will look just like that refurb one!

Actually, what we really need would be Google Wallet support for our GS3's without the hack-around. But we know that wouldn't work with Apple since they're now Anti-Google. Forget where i saw it... think it was on the news earlier, but i like how they put it. Something along the lines of "There is so much competition between Apple and Google, that Apple decided to recreate the world." in regards to Apple's new maps system.

Lol they do. They said my infuse is too big for pockets :face palm: now I just say I'm used to having big things in my pocket, but 4.5 isn't really all that large anymore. So many I sheep at my school, then again I'm at a richer private school lol they were all like ooohh ahh the iPhone 5 is the best. Then I shut them up when I told them about the gnote 2 haha.

So when the iphone comes out with a lighter feeling phone, it feels impressively light, when Samsung comes out with one with a lighter feeling, it feels cheap.

GS3 owner can have an opinion about other products specially if they are direct competitors, it is not about making he threat about OS vs OS, but general opinions about the product just announced.

Apple is at it again, same old phone design. Lame is what I think it is. Honestly, whats changed? Basically nothing besides LTE. The event was more of a " we sold a billion of these and a trillion of these, and oh yeah heres the new iPhone 5 we gave it a bigger scree, now go wait in line"

The only feature I was eagerly looking forward to in the iPoop5 was NFC, but, nope, mobile payments are now set back a few years for everyone.

This.
Its almost impossible to get (cheap) nfc tags in Canada. I asked a Best Buy rep at the Eaton Centre store in Toronto a couple of days ago, and he had no idea what NFC was.
I was really hoping the new iphone would have it so that it would become 'mainstream', but guess we have to wait another year now. Also, doesn't help that stupid S Beam is incompatible with Android Beam (try transferring photos to any non-GS3 phone, it will fail..till we get updated to JellyBean)

i remember reading reviews almost 'ranting' about how light the galaxy s and galaxy s ii were. people were saying 'too light', 'does not feel premium because phone does not feel substantial in hand', 'iphone is perfect with high quality weight to it', 'sometimes not sure if in pocket or not'. something along those lines.
and i read this on a youtube comment but I think it could hold some truth. could Apple have not included nfc (even if it wanted to/why wouldn't they want to?), because it already finalized its aluminum design? fail.
Just a heads up people, not quite Note 2 related, but big news, don't agree with it myself, s4 would of been five, why copy iPhone with a number because it sounds outdated.
Even if this does happen, note 3 will still be called note 3.

No there is nothing like this at least known to us as of now.
Confim your source.
There is a myth because there is no i9400 directly i9500.

Wont be able to prove it, but I'm sure it will be mentioned soon enough, the whole reason for this is to match iPhone with the number 5, which is pointless, what if iPhone new iPhone is called the 6, s4 should stay as it is. I hope I'm wrong about this.

This is absurd. Doing something like this would only show that Samsung is weak against Apple. It would be very stupid of them to name a flagship from S3 to S5.

I heard rumors on the internet without any source of information are always true. It's a fact.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

I've heard this rumour before and there is some, while not conclusive, evidence to support that there is more to this than simply copying Apple.
In many parts of Asia (China, Japan, Korea) the number 4 is considered to be unlucky. It is known as Tetraphobia or the fear of the number four. It has to do with the way it is pronounced resembling the pronunciation of the word death.
In Korea they go to some lengths to avoid using 4 in places such as Hospitals (You won't find a fourth floor in many/any hospitals for example) and Apartment buildings and on transportation such as Aircraft and Railways (especially train carriages).
So, given all the success Samsung are currently having I think they may well want to avoid naming a device the S Death
Haha they might as well name it s death cuz thats what will happen anyways, sudden death

I think the roman numerals for 5(V) look better than the 4 anyway (IV) I also think (me personally) that the new Samsung phone well have a more solid feel to it, instead of cheap plastic touch, then this will be the same for the note 3,
