Messages app. It allowed my to back up to SIM or SD card.

The same app should have a restore function if it let you back them up in the first place.

Best backup method?

So I just did a backup of my device through clockwork before i whiped it... thinking it would back up EVERYTHING
Now I just booted in and its mostly all gone.
Whats the best method to backup EVERYTHING before testing other roms?
CWM will create an image of your setup, ROM, Kernel, and all apps. This is more for rolling back to a different ROM.
To back up apps ONLY, use Titanium Backup (free from market). It'll backup all your apps and restore them independent of ROMs.
I'm more looking for like a FULL IMAGE of settings, history etc to restore to after testing a rom, is this available somehow?
Clockwork Recovery should do that. It should restore everything as if you had never made any changes. Can you outline the process you followed, like what options you selected as you did the backup and restore?

If you don't have enough space on your sd card it wont backup everything
Otherwise I have no idea

ok, i will test it next time before
thx!
You're not alone. Clockwork doesn't backup my app settings either, although it will backup my apps.
You are doing a nandroid backup, right? It makes an image of everything. You definitely should not be having this issue.
Try restoring the backup again, when i was switching from cm6 rc1 i had some issues where my rom would not fully restore, but when i restored it again all my stuff reappeared. Nandroid would back everything up, so unless something happened to your backup, it should restore everything.
Perlexed as to what backs up what?
If I do a nandroid backup that backs up the nand flash (system) data?
Titanium backs up the apps and their user data?
Astro backs up user files?
So after a successfull backup of Nandroid and Titianium backups
my SD card should be able to restore to a replacement phone
(after doing Unrevoked 3.21) and be where the old one was?
I've been trying to figure out why sometimes people (contacts app)
forgets the contact pictures and then remembers them later.
I'm guessing something to do with Google syncing
(so the contacts on the phone are out of sync while this is happening)?
So far I'm only using Google sync to keep calendar and contacts
in sync with Outlook. Is there an app that will sync over USB
and a way to tell Google not to bother?
Thanks

Use clockworkmod to do a backup, backs up the entire phone or titanium backup to backup just apps and data.
For just SMS I use WaveSecure.

Any of these requires root?
I reckon, clockwork needs root.
Titanium Backup needs root too, fyi
and, so, as you require root for both, have clockworkmod create a nandroid backup...
the created backup is stored on your sd card, make sure you copy it to another location as well (in case your sd card gets crippled )
Seems like both app needs root.

nope, it does not seem like....
they DO require root...
also, quick question for this thread:
if i create a nandroid backup, do i still need to worry about my apps completely working (and therefore should also create a Ti backup)?

Nandroid backup is indispensable if everything goes tits up, so I make one prior to flashing a new ROM, at least then I know worst case scenario I can get back to where I am now. I use Ti to restore apps and, more importantly, their associated data after doing a clean install of a ROM, also I can schedule Nandroid to regularly backup apps and data for me

Restore SMS on CM7/MIUI?

MIUI and CM7 both say to do a full wipe and not restore system settings, otherwise you risk getting random bugs.
As far as I've been able to figure out, my SMS messages are stored in system settings in Titanium Backup.
So is there any way to get them back without doing a full system settings restore?

I don't think so, because when you restore the system file it would also restore other things from the previous Rom...
There is a app to back up sms. So best thing would be go back to Rom you were using and use that app, I don't know the name of but its in the market, and then you will always have them because of the app no matter what Rom you are on

Thanks.
I prefer the idea of storing them on SD card rather than Gmail so "SMS Backup & Restore" seems to do the job nicely.
Only caveat is it doesn't backup MMS.
The market app "syncmypix" does a great job of pulling FB pics into the native GB contacts app.
For anyone else making the jump...

[Q] help with getting data after flashing a rom

Im a beginner to flashing roms. Started to root my galaxy s3 and was a success the first time around. After I backup my apps and datas, contacts etcs with titaniumbackup free version. Then I flashed the CM10 everything went smooth. Successfully restoring my apps but I cannot restore my data such as, contacts, texts msg, email accounts other than gmail. Anyone know the reason why this is happening or maybe use a different backup app? Any tips, suggestions would be helpful.
As of right now back to Tmobile stock-rooted jb 4.1
I recommend MyBackup Pro to do app and data backups - allows me to restore my data with the app.

glad this wasnt an IMEI issue lol, hope you find a solution
Restore the data from "contacts storage". Go to backup/restore find it in the list and tap it. Hit restore, data only.
For texts I use SMS backup & restore. TB didn't seem to work well.
Titanium Backup doesn't backup your SMS automatically. Go into Titanium Backup, press menu, and then hit backup data to XML. This will allow you to backup your call log, SMS/MMS, Bookmarks, and even your Wifi Access points.

Yes a Nandroid is and exact copy of your phone at the time of the backup so if it was on your phone when you did the backup it will be on there after the restore.

after I backupd to original can I restore to the current ROM / data I am using now?
I use SMS Backup and Restore to make a backup of my messages prior to flashing a ROM that I want to keep for a bit. TiBu has given me some weird problems and system instability if I restore apps+data, especially between different ROM bases, which is what I would assume would be required for it to restore your text messages.
I'd backup current ROM, restore previous, d/l SMS B&R, backup messages, restore current ROM, d/l SMS again (or pull the apk and just reinstall.. whatever), then restore messages. Problem solved, and you'll have an xml file of your messages which you could save on a computer or something.

Yeah just make another backup before you restore the original backup.
