Galaxy Nexus on Tmobile USA - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does anyone own a Galaxy Nexus connected to Tmobile USA's HSPA+ network in Chicago or midwest? Was wondering what kind of speed are you getting? Thanks in advance.

im in florida.. best so far was 8 DL and 2.1 Upload

it would work with walmart/t-mo plan right? The $30/mo for 5gb 4G data, unlimited text, 100min

I don't see why it wouldn't. All you need is a sim card and the ability to change your plan to that one. I'd consider that plan myself, but I use too many minutes.

It'll be as fast as any other 21mbps HSPA device...

you should be able to use this with simple mobile also. so far, they have the really good deals for non contract service in USA.

Yeah it will; That's what I'm getting too Already have the sim card (DO NOT BUY AT A "Authorized Dealer" ... they rip you off beyond all reason... I normally avoid them but, for some reason, bought the card from them and paid an extra $15)
Btw if you do the math, you can do an extra 400 minutes in overages before you would be going over the $70 price of the Unlimited Everything (5GB of 4G) plan.
So with the $30 plan, you are better off if you use less than 500 mins per month... I use none ...

I think the $30 is worth trying to cut down on the voice anyway, and going with Text or Google Voice as an alternative for unimportant convos

In San Fran on T-Mo I got 4 down and 0.6 up.

Any problems sending/receiving MMS on T-Mobile US network with the Galaxy Nexus?

I don't think I've ever sent an MMS... ever... Seems rather 1990's, no?
Someone else will have to answer that one.

I'm new to T-Mobile US. I remember reading something about there being issues when importing a GSM phone not distributed by T-Mobile. Maybe it was only related to porting the iPhone to T-Mobile? Can't remember.

What? You think andoid is iphone 2g?

The only issues bringing phones to T-mobile is they often only get 2G service on the network (most quadband phones don't have AWS freq that T-mo use). Other than that, everything works just fine. The Galaxy Nexus is of course pentaband and gets 3G just fine on T-mo.
FWIW there are several hundred thousand iPhones running unlocked on T-mobile right now lol.

do you know about their "unlimited" plan for $60? is it really unlimited or is it like t-mobile's where they throttle your speeds at 2gb or 5gb

I remember with Windows Mobile phones not sold by T-Mobile, to set up MMS you have to manually specify the gateway, server address, and port number to get MMS to work with T-Mobile's network. Is this still necessary? It's been several years since I had to do this so it might not be relevant anymore.

And btw OP, only you can know what the speeds are in your specific location. Even someone within a few miles of you could get quite different speeds because of the load on the tower nearest you.

Nope just plug in your SIM. Might have to specify the network and get the required APN's, but it works just fine, no funny business.

Wait, so do you have to specify the network and APN or not? The "funny business" is exactly this manual specification of the network info.

Most of the time no. It should pull the info over the network and be all set up for you when you put the SIM in. If you find MMS doesn't work, changing APN settings might be required. You only do it once, it isn't a big deal.

Question about importing..

Ok, this is for all you guys who have imported before. i have never by the way. When the phone arrives and you insert your sim card, att/tmobile for example. will the phone automatically pick up the required signals to stay on your carrier and not roam to another? or do you have to set it to us what you want only?
Also one of the reasons i am choosing this phone is to have a phone that will be ready and capable of handling att's eventual takeover of tmobile. I would imagine that you will have to get an att sim card when that happens. But it is nice to be prepared Thanx
EDIT> NEW QUESTION ADDED....
Ok I should have asked this but it just crossed my mind.lol.. Since the phone is being imported will everything work correctly? Will I get the Us version of the market, etc?
Also is anyone else afraid of day one bugs?
yes, it's governed by the sim card. you put in an at+t sim card, it'll look for an at+t signal. same with tmobile.
eric b
Well, the T-mobile SIM card will connect you to the T-mo network. The opposite for AT&T SIM card
It has pentaband HSPA+ though, so you'll get full speed with both networks.
Lol ok, seems simple enough. What confused me was i remember on my nexus s, there was a clickable box that allowed me to switch between the two. So i figured id ask

Sure, you could click Network operators and see both networks listed. You would be denied from connecting to the network that doesn't match your SIM though.
Is the knownledge really so bad about GSM in the US that this seems like some kind of dark magic? It must really suck to be so controlled by the carriers whim. You can see it like terrestrial TV. When searching for channels you will pick up all channels that are broadcast (providing the signal is good enough) but you can't actually watch them unless you pay for them.

Yes, it is this bad. No one knows how it works. Not their fault, its the fact that they think that the carriers are the ones that make the phones and give them to consumers, rather than the consumers purchasing phones and using the carriers as dumb network providers.

Just remember, it doesn't matter where in the world the phone comes from. If it supports the bands for the Network/SIM you're using, just put in your SIM and don't worry about it lol. Don't think of it as being an "international" phone. Its just a GSM phone.

I was on T-mobile USA a few years ago when living in the States; started off with pre-paid and moved to a contracct plan. From what I remember, the pre-paid SIM cards don't let you roam on Cingular/AT&T but the contract SIM would. It depends on inter-carrier arrangements so it's best to ask a T-mobile rep about this.
And in doubt, I'd suggest disabling data roaming if you're in area where you can't reliably connect to your normal carrier!

There was a reason why I wasn't posting anything here. I knew stuff in US was a bit different....... So like what hircus said, ask a T-mobile rep.....
In Malaysia where I live, the only contract phones that actually sell in great numbers is the iPhone. Our contracts plans are quite bad and buying an unlocked phone and putting your own SIM card is a cheaper on the long run. Oh, (not too sure for the iPhone), in Malaysia when you buy a phone on contract, the phone is not "locked" to a specific carrier... go figure......
Ok I should have asked this but it just crossed my mind.lol.. Since the phone is being imported will everything work correctly? Will I get the Us version of the market, etc?
yes, the market is sim card dependent you'll get the US market and services (like google voice), no worries.

Which data should i get with att?
My account was (re)provisioned with an iPhone 4, and I'm seeing about double the speed in downtown Silicon Valley since going from my N1 (~1.2Mbps) to the GN (~3Mbps).
Figure whatever ATT's doing, they want iPhone people to be happy...

Get an imei from a lte att phone , call att tell them your switching phones and you need to be on an lte plan. You obviously won't get lte service but you can use the PTA apn which seems to be the fastest. Att can only provision your plan for 4g hspa or whatever if you have an imei of a 4g phone on the plan. I copied a skyrocket imei off YouTube , called added it ,switched plans and now I get between 6mb to 9.5 mb in NY

I did this. I gave them a skyrocket IMEI. They made my plan $30 bucks for 4G LTE. They also gave me a LTE sim card i'm able to use PTA. My internet has increased but at the same time its not stable. I get 3-5mbs but sometimes I don't even get 1mb.
Hmmmm maybe I should try a different radio?
I haven't noticed any speed changes from switching radios. I've tried 5 or 6 I think. I'm currently using the ugla4. It the speed changes your noticing probably have to do with not being on the hspa+ network

Actually, i'm noticing increase of speed and its becoming more stable with PTA. I"m actually pretty happy with it so far. I averge 3mb-5mb.
its alot better then before now I have 3gb of usage now instead of my old 200mb. its good

That's a pretty old baseband, isn't it? Have you given the newer UGLC1 or XXLA2 radios? You really should be using a radio meant for 4.0.4, like one of those two. You can find them at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345
Additionally, have you verified your APN settings?
I've tried all radios this one was just the last one I tried. How do I check the APN settings?

Yeah, it sounds like it may be a problem with how the carrier has your line provisioned. Go talk to them and see if they can fix it.
Would buying a prepaid phone package (one with a "dumb" phone) cause any problems?

No it wouldn't but like coolsplice said, your account is possibly provisioned incorrectly for "3G/4G(H)." I would go speak with them and see if they can revise your account to reflect its proper information.
It definitely is weird when voice/texts work but your phone is unable to get 4G/3G data. Have previous phones had this problem at all?

I wouldn't be so sure. My old Gnex had an antenna hardware issue after a week of use. Try to go to an att store and try their sim. I had bars but absolutely no real usable service on both networks. Goodluck.
From my holocron
I had ATT before t-mobile, on my family's plan. Had the phone for about a week on there and had no problems at all. Right when I switched no more data.
Are you definitely getting T-Mobile signal and not roaming with at&t?

If you search for networks does T-Mobile show?
I know this may seem stupid but I tried every radio I could and I couldn't get data coz I was roaming on at&t from T-Mobile.
Put an at&t sim in and data worked straight away.
If all that checks out and you do have T-Mobile signal then it will have to be a call to CS.

Having problem with Simple Mobile service, any other good ones?

Lately I have been experiencing poor service with simple mobile. In addition to that, they used to have an unlimited flat rate plan, now they add tax. And also they throttle you to edge speeds after 3gigs of data use. After they throttle me, when I reup for the next month it is like a **** show trying to get 4g speeds back. Their CS sucks and they blame it on my phone or sim card all the time. Im officially done.
1) Is there a better mvno out there?
2) Right now i got simple mobiles $50/month plan unlimited everything until after 3gigs of data, then edge speeds and with tax now its $55 and change. Im considering metro pcs $60 flat rate plan unlimited everything for $5 more. Anyone have experience with Metro PCS?
3) Metro pcs offers 4g "lte" speeds, is our phones capable of 4g "lte"? I think simple mobile uses "hspa+" which is supposedly equivalent, doubt it.
Thanks guys for the help.
Don't know about mvno's, but the T999 is not capable of LTE. You'd need the T999L, or if going with Metro, the T999N.
Metro is a good one if you don't want or can't unlock your device. Speeds are as good as T-Mobile with all taxes and fees included and its a flat rate if you pay online, and at store its only $3 payment fee.. As doc said T999 doesn't support LTE, only T999L and T999N..
So both the t999l and t999n are lte capable, but the t999l will not get lte with metro? What service for t999l then?
The two are identical in terms of hardware. Just one has T-Mobile firmware and the ither has metro firmware.

Yeah I tried Simple Mobile once, they are ridiculous. You go over your data and they pretty much shut your data off and you can't even pay more to get more data. I use straight talk t-mobile on my t999l and love it. when I started it was 3GB but they upped it to 5GB after a month. this is the AT&T plan, maybe TMO is different.
It's not LTE, it's HSPA+ but quite fast here in Maine.
As to unlocking, I just called TMO and they emailed me the code. I owned the phone free and clear.
I get LTE here in Las Vegas on the T-mobile Straight Talk.

AT&T compatibility

For those of you using AT&T. Do not update your IMEI at this time and hope that the system doesn't auto update it. LTE is not supported on the OP3. I am currently stuck on 4G due to this problem.
I have opened a ticket to get the OP3 registered. I will date back here.
My ATT service is perfect with LTE.
Update your APN's
Nextgenphone and ATT Phone. The network is blocking LTE access. Your IMEI hasn't updated yet. Mine worked fine for a few hours.
I work in a cor AT&T store. There were features removed when I changed my IMEI. Once AT&T updates their IMEI database it'll be fine.
I've had the phone since noon on Friday and still no issues with AT&T. I have not called to change IMEI.

I am having same problem, my two devices are stuck in HSPA mode. I spent over an hour online chat with AT&T to no resolution. They tried but could not understand the problem. I had the phones activated at corporate store today too. Hopefully this problem gets resolved soon.
Guys don't bother with the att reps. Most of them have no idea what they are doing with an iPhone let alone anything else. The worst thing you can do is call them for help.
I agree with zelendel even though I work for the company. I am sure I'm not the only person who has opened a ticket to the OP3 added. In the mean time if you call customer service and just ask them to have a manager approve adding the nextgenphone apn to your line then it will fix the issue temporarily. I have LTE back for the time being.
How temporarily is the fix? And is there an eta on when att will fix the problem? I will be returning this phone if I can't use LTE on it.
So will this phone be updated and approved to receive LTE in the future by att? This is kind of a major deal if not.

Too late for it to be approved. This is one of the things you learn to deal with when you buy China based devices. They don't get approved by the Fcc which in turn causes issues with LTE and what not.

So because of you I should expect to see a text from AT&T saying they've detected that I'm using a smartphone and have added an expensive data plan? Great.
Pretty sure you just needed to use the right APN.

Pretty sure I know the right APN. What plan are you on that's worth saving...senior talk 200? That's the only plan in the last 10 years that's cheaper than any new plan which all include data. Please don't be a **** because you didn't have a problem. Others will and when they do its nice to help them understand what's wrong.
im on at&t go and it worked out of the box with LTE.
if what the OP said is true, u can get another IMEI that uses a nano sim card and then call att to activate that IMEI with att and then just reinsert the sim into the OP3 without calling, I did not update IMEI either but i do have a little issues with downloading things it switches back and forth quickly between 4+ and LTE but still get good speeds
Just opened my OP3 an hour ago and put my ATT nano sim in.

Yeah my LTE worked fine for at least 5 hours after I changed the IMEI. I was at work on WiFi so I don't know when it quit exactly. Even putting my sim back in a recognized device yielded no data. Called in got the nextgenphone added to my line, LTE came back. The problem with using another IMEI is sooner or later the system will update and you end up with no data.

Changing the IMEI is not only illegal but can also cause other issues with the device it's self.

The IMEI will be updated when they scan the network which they do from time to time.
