[Q] Why bother?

I really like the idea of the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm a former Nexus One user, I still have it in the box it came in with the Desktop dock and Car dock too. I'm holding on to it for ever!!!
I passed on the Nexus S because I didn't want a Samsung Phone. I love the way HTC makes their phones. I bought into the hype about their phones feeling "cheap" and "plasticy".
I decided to replace my N1 with a Sensation which has been a pretty big disappointment.
When the GN was announced I decided to swallow my dislike for Samsung's phones and go for it. After reading about the specs it seemed like a decent phone, Nothing groundbreaking just decent maybe even a little sub par when compared to some of the top of the line phones. The only really stand out things about it are the software, which most of the top tier phones will be getting upgraded to at some point.
NFC? It's cool but I can't see using it that much. I think I've run into one other person that was using a Nexus phone and I didn't care to swap info with them. I'd probably pay for stuff with it but I still have to carry a wallet so it's not going to replace my debit card.
Camera? 5mp that's less than 8mp seems like a pretty big step down from what every "top tier" phone out there. Hopefully the low light performance will be really good but somehow I'm expecting disappointment.
Big Screen? I love it big, but then I read about the Galaxy Note.
Pure Google? I've been there with everything up to Gingerbread and I have to say it was barren. I'm on sense now and I've tried (a few times) giving it up to use ADW to get that stock launcher experience I didn't last long. Compared to Sense 3 (I think) Gingerbread is VERY ugly and misses out on a lot of niceties that I've grown accustomed to in Sense.
At least it'll probably get updates first.
It seems like every time I turn around some company is releasing a phone that bests the GN in every way, SGSII, RAZOR and today I read freaking LG has got a phone with a killer display more pixels or something like that.
With that in mind how do you keep your excitement up about this phone?

when it comes to phones, its the software that makes the device, not the hardware......with a Nexus device you will always be on the latest and greatest, nothing is more frustrating to me than to be behind 1 or 2 software releases

Megapixels in cameras are not everything.
The support on Nexus phones is unparalleled. Samsung make good phones. I would get over the plastic hate and get the Nexus. You are on the Nexus forum so you clearly want us to talk you into it

That used to be the case. However with the announcement of ICS and the subsequent announcement from HTC, Samsung and others that ICS would be coming to their later phones it seems like the update argument may not be as valid as it used to be.
Even though I don't see that much use it NFC. Going forward, I won't consider a phone without it.

I'm totally here to be talked into it .
I will totally admit to unfairly jumping on the "Samsung makes cheap feeling phones" bandwagon. HTC phones have weight, Samsung phones are light.
Yes Megapixels aren't everything but they do count for something.

Of course they're getting updated, but they'll be updated 3+ months after the Galaxy Nexus comes out.

That Samsung build quality stigma is FUD. Is all plastic, but my nexus s is the most solid feeling phone I've had. Light and rigid. I've dropped it on tile and wood floor and keep it in my pocket with no protection except that it's by itself. It still looks mint with zero screen scratches since March.
Don't buy into the megapixel myth. The sensor quality and optics are more important. 5mp is more than any cell phone needs, and provides plenty of resolution for larger prints. most use cases are social networking which does not need even a fraction of that resolution. Wait to see camera reviews and comparisons after people get their hands on shipping product.
You do sound a little confused about what phone you want. There's plenty of good products from various manufacturers with good qualities. What you will get from the GN is vanilla Android, timely updates, a solid all-around performer from a hardware standpoint (maybe not the best at any one aspect, but a formidable complete experience), and the warm fuzzies that super geek Android fans get for nexus devices. That may not be right for you, but that's what it is.

My first android phone was the Droid X, I loved it as am android noob, then I rooted, then I flashed my first ROM, then CM7 came out for the DX, then I dropped it in a puddle... I was pretty disappointed when my insurance sent me an X2 as a replacement, but I've made it the most enjoyable I can by making my own ROM for it. Now I realize Moto will never stop locking their phones and hardware specs aren't everything, its about the software, which is why I'm 90% sure I'm going to be picking up the Gnex when my upgrade comes at the end of January. I've never owned a Samsung phone and am still skeptical about the build quality, hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when I buy it

Thats right the iPhone 4 and 4s.
Judging build quality by feel alone is stupid. Quality means the grade of the materials used and how they are used. A plastic phone using really good plastic is a higher quality phone then a shattering glass phone.

The iPhone 4 and 4S are extremely high quality. They're just... made out of glass. Obviously they're going to break when you drop them. Just like a window will break when you throw a cinder block at it. That doesn't mean the window is low quality....

Their reinforced glass is not as good as gorilla glass, I heard.

The one aspect that people seem to be taking for granted also is that because of all these specs and the Nexus name. Galaxy Nexus is going to have a much larger developer following for rooted customization. Also, when you are looking for a new product what better way to narrow down what to get than to ask an expert...well, developers largely choose Nexus.
(Before someone attacks me with the typical response "not everyone wants to root ". No not everyone does. This was Simply offered as one more possitive to add to the Nexus checklist. )
When it comes down to it. everyone should buy what they want cause no one else cares.

You don't buy the Nexus for the hardware. If my Nexus One would have worked on Verizon I would still be using it.

Let's be honest, if you're regularly browsing this site, chances are you're atleast toying with the idea of rooting the device (if not in the, "The thing will be rooted before I get a text" category).
The Megapixel hype is just that. It's kind of like America's fascination with horsepower -- yes your GT500 outputs crazy numbers, but it still can't turn.

Nother Sensation owner here waiting to bounce on the GN for dev support. I will run CM9 or a MiUI ICS variant more than likely. I'd prefer to have the most choice for kernels and roms over slightly better hardware. Do we really need 4 cores in a phone?

No, that still is the case. Even though a manufacture says they will release an update it will never be timely. As manufactures produce more and more models of phones their support goes down the drain. My Samsung Vibrant never got an official update that was promised. The thunderbolt finally got gingerbread.
My G1 was my favorite phone. Great support by htc, google and devs. It always had the latest version of android, even when its hardware could barely run it.
I would rather have a well supported phone than the highest spec phone. While the galaxy nexus appears to have average hardware it will have great android support and dev support.

Availability of developers.
CAN'T STAND OS delays.
Beautiful bezel.
No HD screen + RGB notification combos on Tmo.
That's if this retarded phone ever comes out for Tmo.

Inused to be HTC supporter. But after I got The old Desire, I vowed to not get any HTC anymore. I dislike Sense and replaced with LP pro.
Then I got the Nexus S, and feel really like the design and overal feeling. All blacks, with super Amoled, seems elegant and mysterious.
And it is much lighter as well.
On top of that Qualcomm is not as fast as Hummingbird, Exynos, or now TI Omap.
Nuff said, no HTC anymore.

I tried to use a SGSII but couldn't live with it. Was coming from a Nexus S and before that I owned a N1. It just didn't feel right. It came shipped with 2.3 then after some time 2.3.4 hit when I sold it a month ago 2.3.5 still wasn't official available. In addition they added a strange bootloader which stopped you from flashing CM7. I don't know exactly what happened there but it was one of the points which led me to sell the phone. I'm using a Desire now until I receive my 100% free GN.

I'll probably just keep my NS for now. All other smartphones sound lame in comparison to the NS + Voodoo Sound.

Galaxy Nexus or iPhone 4s?

Hey Guys...I have an iPhone 4s But I am really curious about the Galaxy Nexus.
Has anyone gone that route? Has anyone gone from a iPhone 4s to the Nexus? What are your thoughts? I am not new to Android......I had a Bionic a Thunderbolt before my iPhone..... Just wanted to get some input as I can trade my iPhone for a Nexus straight up...

I just did the trade. Its got its pros and its cons. You do get the bigger screen but make sure you check it out cause the screen can be overwhelming. It was for me. The camera is the worst compared to the iPhone. I really miss the camera. Battery is about the same for both (meaning they suck). Nexus is because of the lte though. If you have a Mac then you are going to miss I cloud cause it all worked great. Twitter lags badly on nexus if you use that but I think that's due to incompatibility with ics.
The positives though, screen looks amazing with the vibrant colors. Great for games. I love the hacking community. All in all its a great phone. I really miss my iPhone and siri but I love this big guy. Make sure you really play around with a nexus before trading.
Also the first nexus I got had real bad vertical lines on it when it was dim. I returned it and got a new one which is more bearable but still there.

Thank you.....so I see a lot of pros and cons for both phones......but if you had to do it over again would you?
My Bionic lasted about 16 hours for normal (for me) use. My iPhone last about 2 days between charges. But I do take a lot of pictures with my phone and like to carry it in my pocket....so not sure the Nexus will fit in my jean pocket.....

My Nexus fits fine in my pockets lol

I love the nexus definitely but if I had to do it again I don't think I would. I really do love the iPhone. Especially if you plan in taking a lot of pics. They have a thread on here with peoples pics on their nexus and you can see the difference in quality between the 2. If you go for Verizon lte version then you get a huge boost in speed.

I did, though I still have the i4S as well so it was not really a switch. I'm basically using two phones now
It depends what do you do mostly on the phone. Both devices are great, there are some fields where i4S literally trumps GNexus like the camera, so if you often take pictures with your iPhone, you will be really disappointed, but otherwise it's mostly a matter of display/OS preference: huge GNexus display with Android, or tiny iPhone display with iOS. I could live with any of those devices if I was forced to use only one, so if you are draw to Nexus screen, and you won't miss iOS only features like iMessage, go for it..

For me there isn't any question - I ditched iOS last year and haven't looked back. I preferred even the screens of the Captivate and the Fascinate over the iPhone due to the brightness and color saturation. I soon learned, though, that the screen was only the beginning. There is so much more you can do with Android than with iOS - you can run custom ROMs, kernels and themes, making your phone look and function just about any way you want. I could go into details, but you're better off discovering for yourself. While the display alone would have made me pick the Galaxy Nexus, with the vast possibilities Android offers over iOS, it's a foregone conclusion in my opinion. Oh, one more thing... The Gnex has LTE 4G Internet, while the iPhone is only capable of 3G - you have to experience it to truly appreciate the difference. My advice is obvious - Gnex ftw

my co-worker got a 4s and i got a GN... each day my GN at least charge once at work while he playing games without fear of getting low battery...

I had 4 then 4s then razr then went back to my 4s. Once I got the GN only thing I miss is the camera I find android much better OS for customization which I really enjoy doin with my phone. All comes down to preference of course.

I own both right now if you need a camera go with the iPhone also if you play lots of games the iPhone will likely be your phone of choice. Everything else is about the same or better on the nexus. Ics is light years ahead of the iphones iOS 5 but like the guy Said up top this is an android hacking development forum for this phone.... so your not going to get the best results, I can say that the galaxy nexus received better reviews. Do some more research look at reviews and iPhone 4s vs Galaxy Nexus videos

At first I was going to give you a hard time and tell you that if you even have to ask you should get the iPhone. But then I remembered that when I went from the iPhone to the Nexus One, I absolutely hated and regretted it. But here I am 3 years later and on my 4th straight Android phone and I will tell you that you are going to love it. No matter what, just give it time.

If people knew how to use the camera on the gnex there wouldnt be much difference. The fast shutter mode is what causes the inconsistent pictures. If you hold the camera button and let it focus, it will take a great picture.

Apple as a company, has a far different mind set when compared to companies like Google.
Apple stands behind their product.. period!.. and they are more interested in quality and innovative products.. (hardware and software wise).. than in mass production of low quality items that have potential to become very popular in the short run.
If you were like me.. desperately waiting for the GNEX since their announcement in October.. you would have seen how miserable Google was and still is.. when it comes to controlling and showing some interest for perfecting their flagship device. They are miserable in that. After all they are a search Engine company at their core that rely on advertisements.
Apple is not like that.. They cater to their home market FIRST.. They dictate their terms to the carriers.. and they never NEVER compromise on design and functionality.
If Apple doesn't do something.. (like 4G LTE).. yet.. then there is a good solid reason why. (the answer is pretty obvious when it comes to the current generation LTE chips)..
iOS is far more advanced and better integrated than Android will ever be. .. that is because at the core level.. Android relies on Java to linux conversion.. and has a severe draw back when it comes to Graphics rendering.
This is why Android phones MUST have dual core processors and higher RAM..
Thanks to clever marketing.. this gets disguised as if Android is making quantum leaps with packing more power into smartphones..
But reality is in front of you. The Galaxy Nexus has severe lags in many cases..
an underclocked iphone 4s will run pretty much ANYTHING much MUCH better than any android device.. period!..
Not to mention.. an iphone 4s out of the box will give you a 170 Linpack score... a score that others can only dream of.
If you love tinkering with your phone.. if you love installing custom roms (that still suck at many levels).. and if you love to be on a constant quest to de-bug your phone and installing third party apps just to make your phone function the way it was supposed to out of the box.. then Android is for you.
If you are more interested in having a bug-free.. slick interface and integration with all apps and the OS... along with a state of the art hardware.. then Apple it is.
My biggest concern with the iphone 4s was the screen size and 3G speeds.
Trust me.. smartphones currently do not necessarily NEED 4G speeds. I would still have loved a slightly larger screen size on my iphone.. but I love the fact that the phone is compact and slick. 3G speeds on Verizon are plenty enough to stream you-tube videos without much delay even in HD.... same with the Browser.. all thanks to intense optimization in ios.
For what it is worth.. I used to be an android developer.. and I used to tear apart Android ROMs and build them from scratch.
I've jumped over to the iphone 4s.. and I'm never looking back.

Don't know what you've got, til it's gone.

Okay, so it's not gone but the half hour I was forced to spend with android was miserable. Today, despite my better suggestions, my cousin bought a GN. He's not much of a techie, so he asked me to flash android revolution onto his device. Okay, rom-flashing, I used to be an addict. I took his phone, tinkered around, and physically cringed at the sight of the lag. I struggled past my initial disgust, I mean I had to attempt to improve the mess he got himself into. So, I get on the comp, download the files, and realize just how tedious all of this is. I do everything, get it flashed, hand it back to him. I don't care to see it, I feel violated enough having done that. I had to preserve the sanctity of my smartphone integrity. He takes it back and is in awe, so, he shows me how much faster it is. I suppose that I'm spoiled by quality, but it seemed slow even then. Hardly any smoother. I mean, I honestly think the first Gen trophy would have been better, he said the rep told them they haven't carried a windows phone in 3 years. Verizon really needs some better options, I hastily rushed back to the warm confines of my functional OS with suggestions to just utilize buyers remorse and pick up a focus S, a noteworthy upgrade. After using my WP7 before he was sold, but ATT sucks in his region.

I have the same experience from a slightly different angle. I am a big wp7 fan and currently tote an HTC titan which I love. I also had an ipad, my sister had a Motorola XOOM, she is a big fan of apple stuff so suggested we swap tablets, I agreed and am now the proud(?) Owner of a XOOM, and the thing drives me nuts, it lags, the browsing experience is laggy and horrible, the keyboard lags in the browser the interface is messy, I loathe the bloody thing but my sister will not swap back. People keep telling me I should flash the latest nightly eos ics version on my XOOM, but I run my own 24/7 business and don't have enough hours in the day to spend mucking about with something that should not deliver this sort of experience out of the box. On the upside, it supports flash so it is good for the bbc player, for everything else, I use my titan.

I find the OP a bit too convenient, I've used a GN and it was a great experience. I have no idea why you would want to flash that phone!
Now if this was the Verizon GN then it's no secret that this is Verizon's doing, you can read about it on any tech website. So in that case the mistake would be investing in anything other than the unlock GN, nothing to do with the actual "real" device or ICS.

@adesonic I suggest you swap back the tablets in her sleep. WP is great but as far as tablets go, there's the iPad and the rest. I'm not even sure ICS on the Xoom would make it that much better.

Honestly, i know exactly how refreshing it is to use a WP7 device coming from months of nerd raging, flashing and all sort of sufferings. Now i'm a 24/7 WP7 user and i feel fine with this, BUT: don't you ever phisically cringe whenever you have to plug your phone to a pc just in order to sideload an app? Ok, you shouldn't need that often, but what about multitasking? Don't you ever phisically cringe when you, for example, are using both the XDA App (painful to use on WP7 to say the least) and the browser, and when switching between the two you have to stare for a few seconds at a black loading screen before the XDA App reloads, generally wiping the text you just typed? What about having to pay in order to have a decent YouTube app on your phone? What about having to pay in order to have a decent gps navigation experience (unless you're on a Nokia device)? Both worlds are painful at some extent. Right now for my kind of usage it's way less painful to use a WP7 device, but you cannot expect that every single user will feel the same: we all have different needs.
On a side note, guess what kind of users are generally browsing XDA right now? I'll better take cover before another troll war starts rocking the topic...

Android's for customizing and hacking... out of the box, it's colorful bull****. If I would have to use TouchWiz or that LG-UI everyday, it would drive me insane!
I have a Samsung Omnia 7 (Stock ofc, but with some hacks e.g. tethering) , Samsung Galaxy SII (MIUI) and an Asus Eee Pad Transformer (revolver ROM). The device I use regularly is, as you might be able to guess, the Omnia 7.
The Transformer is only used as an E-Reader and for Movies (but it does that quite good!), the Galaxy SII is for flashing around and customizing. Not even music or anything on it, call me crazy
And my Windows Phone, well thats to actually get the work done.

Again the GN is pure android out of the box (unless it's from Verizon) and it works great. Since that's the phone mentioned in the OP I have to defend it. I would still rather buy a Lumia 900 or Focus S if they were sold in Europe but I can recognise ICS as a great OS.

What is a "GN" ? Did he also sign a contract for a piece of hardware, or can he use whatever he finds on craigslist with his carrier ?

The Galaxy Nexus is amazing. Its smooth and the UI is incredible. I absolutely love the face that it has soft.buttons, and they made multitasking amazing in it.
But I cannot use a phone that big, ever. Its truly huge. Also the camera leaves something to be desired.

Does that really matter? I don't think that the additional 100 MHz packed by the Titan would matter that much. Anyway, be it smooth or not in the UI, it's quite sure the Nexus S won't be as consistent as a WP7 device (regardless the hardware) in terms of smoothness throughout all the OS and especially when using third party apps.

Even most android fanboys aren't lying about the addition of hardware acceleration.
While I'm happy with my Lumia 800 and focus flash (titan broke, damn HTC and their crappy build quality) perhaps you should wait for the lumia 900. I wish I could've gotten some hands on time with that marvel of cellular technology at CES.

It is hardware accellerated. Stop living in 2010.
The UI latency you keep bringing up is invisible to most consumers and really, I didn't notice it when I spent over an hour in every carrier store Saturday morning/afternoon and played with the Galaxy Nexus. The UI is amazing, and it's smooth as hell. It also has 32GB internal storage and treats it the same as WP7 and iOS (everything on the same storage, no more small App partitions). It's an amazing device. I just think it's too damn big. Updates come way faster to the Galaxy Nexus than to any Windows Phone. With Android having a good UI now, I'm actually considering getting that device (I had sort of sworn off of it after the Vibrant, which is why I got the HD7). Android 4.0 has Native MTP support as well, which negates the need for USB MS as the device can sync natively to Windows Media Player (Music, Podcasts, Pictures, Video) - something not even WP7 can do (needs a redundant app for that). That has always been a negative for Android, but it's gone now...
The Lumia 900 will have the same crappy hardware as basically every other Mango device, it will just be huge, use a now "getting kind of old/overused" design, and have LTE - which isn't even available to most people here (so waste battery life for a capability that isn't possible to use, thanks but no thanks). It will even still have a WVGA resolution in a qHD and (becoming) 720p world, which looked terrible as all hell on the Titan screen when I played with it (made the Focus Flash screen look like a Retina Display by comparison).
The main issue is the OS, the device builds are not top notch but that's a different beast. The OS has grown boring to me, and I will be forced to carry 3 devices if I continue to use WP7. That's become unacceptable to me. I'm going to another platform so I can either use one device (if iPhone, I can ditch my iTouch and Android phone) or two (if Android, then I can carry my Android device and my tiny iPod Touch) instead of the situation I'm in now. I'm leaning towards iPhone, because of iMessage, FaceTime, and the fact that 80% of the people I know use iPhones now.
And yes, HTC is notorious for their crappy build quality. The only value they bought to Android was Sense, back when the Android UI was TRULY terrible. Other than that, their devices aren't anything to write home about.
The only area of pause with the Galaxy Nexus is the Camera and lack of a Camera Shutter button.
T-Mobile 3G here is giving me edge speeds with a full 3G signal, so I need to switch carriers next month when I switch phones, as well. I'm tired of their terrible network. Went home for a week last week and couldn't even make a call 90% of the time, or send a text. Had almost no reception. They should have let AT&T buy them.

Thinking of upgrading to GSM Nexus from iPhone 4s. Some input..

I have been a longtime iPhone and Android user and currently I am using the iPhone 4s. It's a great phone, but I tend to miss Android and all that it offers.
Here is my question.. Does anyone think $690 for the GSM Nexus is worth it? I have been going back and forth on it and I think I would really like it, however I can never seem to keep an Android phone because nothing is really new with it.
Here is an example. I had the Verizon Thunderbolt, it was a nice phone, fast and really allowed Android to shine. I then saw the T-Mobile Sensation come out and it was a dual core with nice specs. Another really nice phone. But again, noting super new with Android. Not to mention T-Moble's network blows around here.
I hoped to ATT and I love the coverage and have tried the iPhone 4, 4s (current) and Skyrocket.
So, will Android 4 on the Nexus be new and improved enough to make the switch?

I should pay attention, I see the subsidized Verizon phone still is $300. Maybe $600+ is an ok price.

Honestly I only think paying full price for the GSM Nexus is worth it if you get the $30 Walmart plan on T-Mobile.

I personally have been using my GNex for about a month now and I bought it from one of the on-line retailers (paid $750BTW) and I would do it again in a heart beat. I personally have TMoUSA and the service is good in my area, everyone's mileage will vary. I had the iPhone and have not looked back after going with android

"Worth it" is completely arbitrary based on the person.
For me, it would be worth it. I hate iOS and all it stands for. I also don't being treated like a criminal for wanting root. I also think the iOS theme is butt-ugly.
I'm running pre-alphas of CM9 and they are working flawlessly. This bodes well for the future of the device.

Depends on your budget . I don't think you'll see too much of a difference in terms of performance though... and the GPU isn't that great compared to the iPhone. The Galaxy Nexus is a really good phone, IMO the best Android out there (but then I'd never again buy a non-Google phone -- these are locked worse than the iPhone).
I love the big screen (came to it from a Nexus S) and ICS is a big improvement in terms of UI.
Having said that, the iPhone 4S still offers a smoother and more consistent user experience, IMO.

You can get an unlocked 16gb Galaxy Nexus from negri electronics for about $625 shipped nowadays.
No one can tell you how "worth it" it is. Everyone has different qualifications. I'd be inclined to say that if you're going to be staying w/ AT&T and paying through the nose for service, its harder to swallow the ~$625 for an unlocked device.
It becomes more worth it when you go to a prepaid plan and cut your service cost in half every month.
So I would definitely recommend you walk into a Verizon store so you can play with it in person and make your assessment on whether or not you think Android 4 is good enough to justify your payment for the unlocked device. Obviously don't pay attention to the network speeds or anything as you'll be using on AT&T, but its a good idea to see it in person first.

I paid $650 ($689 after tax)for a non-subsidized CDMA so I think so.

well coming from the SGS II(epic 4g touch)...........I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!....i got the CDMA(32gb) version with Verizon. Android 4.0 is a HUGE step from gingerbread, you'll love it. I would recommend going with Verizon though

Ye love it too, and the experience is definitely more changed than ever from 2.x to 4.0(eg. better than ever), so by those means, yes it's worth it.
However with an iphone 4s i would probably wait another year before upgrading.

You could watch Swappa if you're interested in trying to save a few hundred and go lightly used. There isn't much on there now, but may be more in the coming months. Beware of people maybe trying to unload their phones due to signal issues (CDMA at least). I've collected very mixed data on CDMA signal issues (I can't speak for GSM). Many people report 0 problems, and some report chronic problems even after phone swaps. I've seen some fixed after a swap, and in my case I had a tech swap my SIM card which helped a lot, and then updating to 4.03 radios *hopefully* fixed the problem.
Assuming my signal issues are fixed now and don't return, this phone is by far the best I've ever owned. A major jump forward coming from a Droid Incredible. CM9 is also amazing.

The trouble with asking this kind of question in a galaxy nexus forum is your going to get a very biast opinion as everyone here, well mostly everyone here owns one and android users love android and apple love apple products.
Really the best advice is go and use one in a store and make up your own mind and of course watch some youtube videos about ics and gnex vs iPhone 4s. Then you be armed with the knowledge to make the right decisiin for you and your needs.

I'd suggest going to your local Verizon store and play around with their Galaxy Nexus demo for a bit. I waited and cried about this phone not being released then when it finally was and I picked up I found myself questioning why and what about the phone was I going so crazy for and at the moment I'm a little regretful for not playing with the phone first and just ordering it online.
It's a nice phone and I know I'm a picky person but there was imo more bad than good and the stuff I think is bad may not necessarily be bad but just not as good as it should or could have been for the price and usually when I upgrade, which is once every few years when Verizon grants me a discount, I like to get the best I can get to last me those few years and the Galaxy Nexus isn't the best for me.
To be specific on the things I personally didn't care for were the camera, the battery life which is common in 4G phones but was a little worse in this phone than other 4G phones I've used. The screen was a let down, the colors and grainy banding in low light levels just looked horrible and the whole 4.65" largest screen thing was misleading to me as you hardly ever use the full screen because of the softkeys and worst of all for me was no USB Mass Storage which I used allot in my previous phone but that last one was my fault for not researching the phone more thoroughly prior to purchase.
I've always been an android user so I can't say anything bad about iOS devices although I have and use an iPad 2 and iPod touch 4 I can't imagine them being any worse as a phone.

If you can wait until the Samsung Galaxy S3, it's a beast. IMO, the Galaxy Nexus is already an outdated phone, and it will be more apparent when new phones start rolling out ICS.
Of course, there's a slew of other phones coming out in the next few months, so you'll have lots of options. That's just my opinion.

Only if you promise not to make threads about multi tasking or battery life if you end up not liking it. Which I am very sure you will like it.

I've never owned an iPhone so maybe I'm not qualified to give my opinion, but I have handled various iPhones through the years. My buddy who's owned a couple summed it up best. The iPhone is a beautiful phone with an environment where everything "works." It's a device with a very closed, simple OS but amazing apps, where android is a very powerful, open (if you get something from the nexus line anyway) OS with decent apps. The apps make iPhone and the OS make Android.
If you crave freedom and are a power user, this is the phone for you. I've only owned android devices but I think apple makes a good phone. The problem lies in that if you want it do something that apple hasn't envisioned for the phone, then you are out of luck. Also, the iPhone 4 and up have great screens... but having owned 4inch screen and up phones for the last 2 years, it's pretty much impossible for me personally to go down to something under 4 inches. The thing just feels utterly tiny and limited with that little screen real estate.
As an aside, where Android has caught up with the UI on ICS, they really need to step up the game with their tablets. This is an area the iPad has every Android tablet beat, not even including the horsepower under the hood... device layout! I'm talking about the 4:3 format the iPad uses. Every powerful android tablet is in 16:9, and if you aren't watching movies it's a terrible aspect ratio. It's harder to hold and you give up a lot of usable area in portrait and in landscape. It works for computers with a dedicated keyboard and mouse, but on a huge touchscreen device, it's just awkward.
Edit: Biggest reason I will never own an iPhone is iTunes. Hate the program... huge bloatware on the computer and Apple forces you to use it if you want any sync with your computer. iCloud alleviates it somewhat, but it's just another way to trap you into the Apple ecosystem.

Iphone5-optimus-g-galaxy nexus my expierence

basically ive always been an ios guy and for xmas my gf bought me a nexus 7 and i fell in love with everything i could do with it ! so i decided to hell with my iphone5 ima get a optimus g thinking it would be just as easy to flash roms and make my own. Boy was i wrong =[ . ya the optimus g was fastttt like i mean fast the Gnex isnt even close but seriously it was still on 4.0.4 lol just barley got 4.1 not to mention the only quality rom it has was something that came out only a week ago for it and its cm10.1 .that said cm10.1 had no camera no gps and could mess up your EFS lol yet it was still my DD cause their simply wasnt anything else. After being fed up and realizing that if it took this long to get 4.1 imagine 4.2 or even 5.0 ! so i sold my optimus g bought a Gnex and made 200$ in the process and couldnt be happier! ya this is a muccch slower phone but i love all the great DEVs all the great roms and def vinilla android and getting updates much quicker than a normal android device .. Never a non nexus for me...
well ya just wanted to add my 2 cents and share my expierence

I think the timing coincides with the lack of major changes that the ios had gone through in comparison to the leaps and bounds that Android is ahead of the game.

And price is another major factor. More people realize that iphones are simply overpriced. Why should you pay 30-40 percent more for slightly smoother scrolling and more fluid transitions. Today OEMs offer comparable or even better user experience (cmon screen at a good smartphone should be at least 4,3") for significantly lower price.

This is the main reason to be honest.. price isn't the issue at all... Lack of innovation changes to their os and their closed system lacking the ability to download applications/music/games/movies online or anywhere outside the app store

That's one of the most important factors indeed, but remember that we talk also about brand loyalty, which in case of apple products/users is usually huge. If the price was comparable I don't think apple wouldn't lose that much of market share at relatively short time.

I have both(gnex/lgog) and I agree. although I wouldn't say it slow I can get it to get almost 5000 quadrant scores and my optimus it's almost 8000 both are fast. I think my EFS is shot although I'm not worried about it because I don't even pay my bill I use wifi . My sprint gnex is so much fun. I am a flash a holic and flash 2 rounds today although my daily driver is the craziest most Tweakable ROM on the planet.JBSOURCERY . Nothing comes close. like I said cm 10.1 borKed to my EFS although I might just go back to it because it has the T Mobile female GYN and you have the Nexus so you know what that is. As the OP said, his GF bought him a Nexus 7 for Christmas so he played with it and realized Androids potential. If she had not bought it for him, would he ever have switched? The poster who mentioned brand loyalty I think was right. The Apple fans I know wouldn't even consider switching even though they've never as much as held an Android device. I agree that as Android phones become more mainstream and Apple continues on its current path we'll see more and more switching over.
Sadly though, recently I had a painter working here and he heard me tell my Nexus to remind me to call someone at 3. The painter said, "isn't siri great". Most Apple fans don't have any idea what's really going on now.

I went from iOS to Android a few years ago (iPhone 3S -> HTC Thunderbolt) which was back when Android definitely wasn't as polished as it is today (which at that time iOS was already fairly mature and polished in comparison to Android). The 3S was the first smart phone I had ever owned but I remember getting so much crap from friends and family saying how iOS is so much better and how it was such a bad move to switch to Android. Keep in my mind most of my family has drank the Apple kool-aid so the majority of my family members own an iPhone and/or iPad (brothers, sister, mom, aunts, uncles, etc) so I would hear the typical arguments against Android all the time:
-Not nearly as many apps compared to iOS
-Android crashes a lot and is buggy/slow/laggy, etc.
-Android phones are cheap and break easy
-Music / media management isn't as good as iTunes
-Horrible battery life
-and on and on and on
While some of the arguments may have been at least somewhat valid at the time, what I find interesting is that I still hear some of these 3+ year old arguments against Android today which are in no way shape or form still valid. What it boils down to is ignorance and people not knowing what they are talking about. Many people that I have argued with over this topic have never even owned an Android device, their first smart phone was an iPhone and that is all they have ever known. Or if they did own an Android it was 3-4 years ago and had a bad experience with it.
My favorite argument I have heard recently was about Siri vs. Google voice search. I have had multiple iOS people tell me that Google voice search simply does a Google search and returns a list of web sites that might contain the answer to whatever you asked. They think it just points you to a website it doesn't actually display the information or anything. I proceed to pull out my gNex and ask how many gallons are in a liter or whatever and boom rub it in their face.

As a daily user of both iOS & Android, I can with out a doubt say that the battery life thing still applies. My biggest gripe with Android.
You have to have a MAXX or a large aftermarket battery just to get through the day with an Android.

The Galaxy S4 battery life tests are in at gsmarena.com and they look quite promising, but it does have a rather large 2400mah battery - if the device is still thin though who cares.
I've always wondered how Apple was able to make the iphone so battery efficient in web browsing - I think gsmarena.com scored it at 9hrs and our nexus gets like 3-4hrs LOL. I'm not sure if that was done pre-JB days or not, and it would be interesting to see the results with a custom rom/kernel and some underclocking.

The Galaxy S4 battery life tests are in at gsmarena.com and they look quite promising, but it does have a rather large 2400mah battery - if the device is still thin though who cares.
I've always wondered how Apple was able to make the iphone so battery efficient in web browsing - I think gsmarena.com scored it at 9hrs and our nexus gets like 3-4hrs LOL. I'm not sure if that was done pre-JB days or not, and it would be interesting to see the results with a custom rom/kernel and some underclocking.

Personally I don't care how thin or thick the phone is, it's going in a case the minute it comes out of it's box. I'll pay extra for a phone three times as thick with twice the battery.

That makes sense because :
1) Apple controls hardware & software, so they made sure the all components are good and the system is optimized. Easier to do it on limited set of hw.
2) Android can run services in the bg, while there are no such thing in userspace on iOS. Obviously, less power usage, but also less potential functionality.

Oh absolutely. I agree there is a well and good reason why Android consumes more power than Apple. The problem is a larger battery is required and rarely offered in a way that the consumer would actually want.
Its like one of those "we need an idea" memes where they double everything on the phone every year: screen size, processors, graphics, speed, half as thin! And then they throw the same old battery they have been using for years in there.

I agree, so far we've seen, only Motorola has actually done anything about it with the Razor MAXX, at least without making a huge phone instead. I'm looking forward to see if they'll deliver something in that area in the future, current pushing of "cores and mpix" doesn't impress me at all.

Depends on the phone. I get 5 to 6 hours screen on time on my s3.
Much better than my friends iPhone 5

Yes! That is exactly what I am talking about. Its great that new phones have 27 cores and all that, but useless when the phone dies in just a few hours. I have high hopes that the "maxx" type batteries carry over to all Android devices, and last year would have been past time for that.

There are allot of unmentioned factors, apps syncing etc, and those make a huge difference. It's hard for me to accept your conclusion as valid. And of course we all know pics or it didn't happen.
My Mom, Dad, brother and sister all have iP5s, and I have the iPad3, my experience with these devices differ greatly from what you have stated above. I don't think you are intentionally spreading misinformation, but your vague statement about your friends iPhone does not match up with the long term experiences I have had with multiple Apple mobile devices.

My work just issued iPhone 4s to me. Think battery life is about the same as my galaxy nexus with 2100ma battery. I can't stand having to go back to home then settings just to change something simple in my email that should be in email not ios settings. Day 2 tomorrow will see for sure on battery but can't really use it like my own since they monitor it.
