serious battery problems - Defy General

Hey guys! I need some experts help! Me and some friends bought 6 batteries (of the same type) for our defy (heres the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2300mAh-BF5X-Battery-Motorola-Defy-MB525-ME525-MB52-/250879839250), which are preformance-wise really good (they last 2 days with heavy use easily), BUT the phone recognizes it only as 500mah (according to /sys/class/power_supply/battery/uevent). This means the battery drains to 1% in 5-6 hours, but can last 1.5 days on 1%. Tried calibration with battery calibration (from market), cwm, and even tried 'hard' calibration (fully charge phone, switch off, pull out battery, plug in charger, put in battery again), nothing helped. Can somebody point me to the location where the battery information is stored in the system, so we could write an app to overwrite battery readings according to the voltage (with which the percentage can be calculated pretty accurately, max: 4.2V, min: 3.3-3.4V)? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thx in advance!

i checked your link on ebay and it says

from what i understand from the poorly written instructions that seems somewhat like english, it seems you have to charge and discharge 3-5 times (without wiping stats)?? but i dont really know...

Quick Battery Drop in Initial 10%

Hi all,
I am puzzled by my problem. I am using Virtuous 2.7 + King's BFS kernel #4.
My phone battery will drop quickly from 100% to 92% right after unplugged from the power cord. By quickly, I meant I did not use the phone, killed all tasks, and battery will drop to 92% literally in minutes.
Bump charging, wiping battery stats, wiping dalvik cache, killing all tasks are not helping at all. I don't have SetCPU, but someone in the forum mentioned they have SetCPU, and it is not helping either.
Is anyone having this problem? Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this?

I spoke to RMK as well as others about this in IRC, doesn't look like anything we can do, deep in the HTC code I guess.
I have the same issue using SkyRaider 3.1. Battery is 100% then after 5-10 minutes drops down to low 90s. It bothered me at first but after several days of moderate to heavy use and still having almost 50% battery left at the end of the day, I just figured it was some kind of bug when reading the battery level at the beginning. How is your battery life overall? If it's like mine, then i wouldn't worry too much about it as long as it's lasting longer. I'm using the 1750mAh battery from Sedio.
I was having the exact same problems until I went back to stock everything and bump charged. Took the OTA for 2.2, rooted, custom recovery, bump charged, wiped stats and cache and now I'm good to go. I usually dont think crap like this works but it made a huge difference in battery life and stopped the 100-90% problems I was having.

I am using the 1500 mAh battery.
My battery life is uptime around 24 hours and awake time around 6-9 hours depending on usage.
so you're not having the issue anymore, after going back to stock (non rooted) with the official OTA 2.2?

Do you think format the phone and wipe all the data will help?
Have anyone tried formating the phone?
I've searched and found that the cause is the phone saying the battery is charged fully when its not basically so to fix this after it goes to 100% while the phone is one then u should turn it off and let it charge fully from there

I did bump charge this phone, but it still drops like crazy.

Is this a once time fix thing or do you have to do it every time you charge?
bump charging 4 or 5 times in a row (basically bump as many times as you need to to get it to where the light turns green withing a minute of 2 or plugging it in again) and then wiping battery stats solved this for me... kinda.. i still have to bump twice, but after that it'll stay at 100 for a good while and work it's way down normally, no jumping 10% down..

That is bump charging. Something htc is unable or unwilling to fix.
The issue has been known for a while and you have to 'bump charge' every time to avoid the 5-10% drop.
Here's their response about fixing the "bump charge".

Do you bump charge every single time you charge right now? It's pain in the butt if I have to bump charge everyday.
Yup every day. 4 or 5 times is way overkill though. Just charge phone until green, turn off (don't need to unplug), wait until it turns green then do the plug/unplug one more time.

Went to stock (official OTA), rooted, custom recovery, bump charged, reset stats and cache and I'm good now.
I charged it to "full" while it was powered on. Once the light turned green I turned the phone off, charged again until the light turned green. Took about 25 minutes. Powered up in recovery wiped battery and cache and now I'm good. The key is after doing all this you have to let the phone completely die.
If you're wiping your battery stats after a bump charge, you will have this problem every time you don't bump charge.
If you wipe your battery stats after it goes green without a bump charge, you won't have this problem.
This is because the software thinks the bump charged battery levels equal 100% charge. A bump charge adds approximately 10 percent of charge.
Formatting your phone or any software changes won't actually do anything other than wipe your battery stats while your phone is not at bump charge levels.

The reason this happens is because the battery gets charged fully to 100%, and then is allowed to slowly drain back to 90% (or so) before it's charged back to 100% again. This is how Lithium batteries are charged.
Try this: charge the battery to 100%, and immediately disconnect it after it's full. Notice how the battery doesn't drop to the low 90's immediately.
The reason "bump charging" appears to work is because there is no drain on the battery, since the phone is off. It goes to 100% and stops.
There's nothing we can do code-wise to fix this; it's just how the battery technology works. Keeping it fully charged at 100% while on would damage the charging capacity of our phones.

Solutions in search of a problem
Let me preface this by saying that I’m not an electrical engineer, or any sort of expert on phone hardware, but I think a couple issues are being confused. I’ve seen many posts about this battery “problem” here and elsewhere and an important point is being missed. People are confusing what the battery is actually doing with what the phone SAYS the battery is doing. They are NOT the same thing. The battery is a physical device and it will do what it’s going to do.
Battery life is a function of battery quality, initial state of charge, and demand. If you want the battery to last longer, look at ways of reducing demand. What applications are in use? How long is the screen on? What brightness level? Overclocking and undervolting settings? All these will affect ACTUAL battery life.
At lot of the “solutions” discussed have nothing to do with conserving energy use, but have everything to do with messing with how the phone REPORTS the state of charge. A good example is the issue of the initial drop reported by many users during the first few minutes after unplugging the charger. I see this on my own phone. If the phone is “taught” that 100% charge is when it is totally crammed with juice and plugged in as well, it’s not surprising that there is a good bit of voltage drop (+/- 10%?) right after unplugging. Does this mean there is a problem? NO! It’s just the battery doing what batteries do. A lot of the suggestions about wiping battery stats and such have nothing to do with saving energy. They are ways of fiddling with how the phone REPORTS its condition under various circumstances.
My advice: if you are happy with how your battery lasts, over the course of a day or so, then learn to relax, crack open a cold brew, and revel in just what a great phone the Incredible is. If your battery isn’t lasting as long as you need it to, then look at ways to save power or get a larger capacity battery. Tweaking the battery meter function is simply a feel-good exercise and won’t get you any actual improved performance. END OF RANT.
I can confirm that my gf's phone and my good buddies phone(both were never rooted) have never had a problem with the phone charging up slow first off(both phones charge about 1% per minute). And since they accepted the OTA, have not had the problem of charging to 100% and quickly jumping down to 90%. For instance, the other day my buddy charged his phone while on to 100%, played a game for about 2 minutes and closed it, battery was at 99%. Now I have tried and continually try every possible solution to my battery dying quick and charging slow, but am realizing that this must just be the cost of customizing my phone to my liking. And at least for the moment, a stock 2.2 DINC is just not an option for me.

Sorry that I posted in the wrong forum. I thought this is related to the kernel or ROM I am using (Which is development right????).
Not to question your knowledge about the "battery technology", but why is it only happening to certain people? Nowadays most device are using Li-ion battery, why this phenomenon do not occur to all devices?

[Q] Weird battery discharge

Hi fellas..
Maybe you've noticed the messages I've sent to Unofficial BravoS thread of Coolexe's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200517&page=51) which is the ROM I use.
The issue is, the battery discharges rapidly. Actually, if you check mV values, it doesn't discharge rapidly, but if you look at percentages, there is a huge inconsistency. I used Battery Monitor Widget to log the battery performances last night, and saw these horrible results:

These are the last lines of the log, before the phone shuts down. As you can see, the phone gone to 0% from 34% in one minute! No low battery warnings or whatsoever..
Funny thing is, this doesn't happen in StarBurst ROM (which is a Froyo based one). Do you reckon this is a GingerBread issue or something? I saw some other people complaining about their phone shutting down at 20% as well.
So, what do you suggest?
when you look at the voltage there isnt that much drain, so its only a displaying problem
wipe battery stats and maybe recalibrate the battery
but first one should fix it

It seems more "smooth" discharge now. Right now, I'm charging my phone off; going to turn on phone once it reaches "green light" with charger on, and plug it off once phone booted. Maybe then, it can know what's maximum and minimum.
So far, I tried to charge my phone to full and erase batterystats.bin but, as you can see at the first post, it didn't work well.. On the other hand, the phone charged-discharged only once in this ROM, you think it could be better if I've given a "second chance"?
i dont know much about that "battery calibrating" and reseting stuff, you have to search in the forum
only thing i want to say is, dont do that deep drains!
recharge at least 5%! you kill your battery, lithium-ion batterys get serious damage from deep drains

I know, but when phone thinks it's 30% and not warn me, how can I do it?
In order to calibrate the battery meter - FYI the battery itself cannot be calibrated, as Li-Ion batteries have a very low memory compared to old Ni-Cd etc. batteries - you have to go through the following procedure:
1) charge the battery to 100%;
2) let the battery discharge until the phone shuts itself down;
3) plug the wall charger into the phone, boot the phone up then charge the battery to 100% without interruptions.
If the above procedure does not yield the expected results, you can try fully charging the phone (LED showing green) with it completely turned off (after completely draining it). Again, the charging procedure should not be interrupted.
Source: personal experience - had to do this twice after installing new ROMs, as the phone was shutting down at ~14% (working like a charm now).
Regarding the matter of battery wear because of complete discharges, Li-Ion batteries do indeed have a lower cycle count than old-school batteries, but the standard charge/discharge number a Li-Ion battery can take is ~350, so you can't damage the battery pack by doing a full cycle per month (required to keep the battery meter accurate).

Today I realized that it my concern was a quick one. Today, I discharged battery to 0 percent, plugged the AC charger while it's OFF and charged it for around 2h22m until Led-green-full; then turned on the phone with charger plugged and plugged it off just after the boot process. After that, I let the phone to discharge (I helped it a little )
I actually saw "Plug your charger" warning this time, and according to Bat. Mon. Widget, it gone down until 13%! If I do compare the mV values with the old ones, I can see that somehow the phone does learn which mV value correspond to which percentage better.
Even though it gone from 13% to 0% in two minutes, it's at least better than 30% to 0%.. Also, when I check the readings after I plugged in, I saw that percentage-voltage matching is slightly higher, showing that the phone now shows lower percentage for the same voltage - which shows that it learns percentage better.
After one or two charge-discharge cycle, I think it'll learn absolute 0
BTW; the battery says 3.4V 1400mAh and my maximum voltage is 4160mV (100%) and minimum is 3415mV (0%). Are these values normal, you think?
PS: What I'd recommend from anyone who loves flashing ROMs as much as I do is: AFTER YOU FLASHED A NEW ROM, CHARGE YOUR BATTERY TO FULL (100%) AND ERASE THE BATTERY STATS. AFTER THIS, NEVER, I SAY, NEVER ERASE YOUR BATTERY STATS FOR LONG TIME IN ORDER FOR YOUR PHONE TO LEARN STATS BETTER! Erase after long time, say 3 months for wear effects to be accounted, but well, I think you should be fine even after you don't do this
Maybe you did already know that, but, well, I learned it hard way
EDIT: Phone shutdown at 13% after this, but I think it'll do better in time..
Can't Calibrate the Widget
I am having a similar issue with my htc aria. Problem is that it gets to about 78% and then won't go any higher. It even shows (in Battery Monitor Widget)
"Discharging" and "AC plugged". I have let it sit plenty long enough to be fully charged and then completely discharged it (until it shut itself down, which was not 0%) and recharged until it reaches 78% again and stops charging. I'm guessing it is so far out of whack that it says I'm at 78% but I am really at 100%.
The widget says to charge to 100% and then drain completely to 0% to calibrate. I can't do either from what I can tell. So what to do?

Quick tip - let the phone charge for another hour or so after the light goes green (when charging it while powered off). I've read that the light goes green at about 95%. It takes another hour for the phone to really charge to 100%. That's because Li-Ion batteries use two stages to charge: a fast one and a slow one. More details here.

P.S. - It also took me two complete charge/discharge cycles to fully calibrate my battery meter after switching from FroYo to Gingerbread.
@vkyjackie - Try fully charging the phone while powered off. If it still doesn't fully charge (LED green), then you might have an issue with either the battery pack or the wall charger.

reset battery info

hi all! ive recently upgraded my battery to a 2300mah one, and the os recognizes it as 500mah (according to /sys/class/power_supply/battery/uevent). have tried calibration, battery stats wipe, and letting it fully discharge, and then charging fully while switched off. have read about a method: letting the phone fully charge, switch it off, disconnect charger, pull out battery, connect charger, put in battery, and let it charge again fully. this didnt work either. the real problem is that whenever i charge the phone, it drops to 1% in about 5 hours, than it gets stuck, and i can use the phone for 1 day after that (with wifi/3g/bluetooth/gps on). this means i get false battery percentage readings. has anybody any idea on how to solve this?
In CWM, there is a menu you can erase the battery history. Erase it when your battery is at below 10% and recharge it to 100% plus another 1 hour at full charged.
There is a selling of 1700mAh gold battery for Defy and this one is pretty good and almost rated working like the genuine OEM battery.

do you mean wiping battery stats in cwm advanced? already done that a thousand times in thousand ways, but that only deletes the batterystats.bin. thats just battery history. i have an upgraded battery, i wanna clear ALL info about the old one. wiping stats just wont do it. but thanks anyways
please help, 5 friends of mine have the same issue with the same battery, and we have no idea how to solve it (even reflashing the kernel didnt work). according to battery monitor widget, the battery dies when its around 3100mv, and does charge till 4200-4300mv. and afaik the percentage reading are calculated from the voltage. so is there a way to reset the default voltage/percentage values?

[Q] Battery worn out?

an inability to restore nandroid backup
a possible corrupted sd card
a usb brick and inability to mount some nand partitions
and finally succeeding in fixing it, now using/running:

seems that has battery issues. When it reaches below 30%, it drains a lot faster. In example few minutes ago, the battery was below 30% level and after sending a couple of sms messages the phone, without the "Connect the charger" indication shut down. Not even the battery icon was red.
What should I do?
After flashing the above ROM I ran an app called battery calibration (could this be the culprit?).
I haven't experienced such problems before the whole mess mentioned above.

Well, it seems to me like a "classic" battery meter calibration issue.

1) charge the battery to 100%;

Regarding the matter of battery wear because of complete discharges, Li-Ion batteries do indeed have a lower cycle count than old-school batteries, but the standard charge/discharge number a Li-Ion battery can take is ~350, so you can't damage the battery pack by doing a full cycle per month (required to keep the battery meter accurate).

Did this work you mate? I have the same issue with my year old batter now... the phone shuts down @ 40% without any warning... and when I charge it, it starts from 0% and as soon as it hits the 58% mark, it jumps to 100% by itself... and i cant seem to figure out what the hell could I do to fix it... I tried calibrating the battery using the awesome method described here http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11823-battery-calibration-thread 3 times and nothing changed...

Weird that after calibration you still get that kind of issues, does this only happen on your current ROM? I have the latest CM in my desire and everything works just fine... Maybe try another ROM if calibration doesn't work to see if it's a hardware or software issue
i actually had issues with MIUI first.. the phone randomly shut down by itself but when i turned it back on, it was perfect... then i switched back to Oxygen and while everything was fine, suddenly one day the phone died at 40% :S and from that day on the phone charges to 58% and then instantly jumps to 100%... and as soon as it gets to 40% it shuts down itself... i guess i need a new battery but i wanted to see wether i can fix this one somehow so i can use it till the new one arrives...

and battery is not bad - it works fine

phone turning off at 20% is fine mate because thats the battery guards against any damage
most of the phones ( smart phones) switch off at 20% as going lower can damage the System .
It shouldnt normally..It's supposed to work fine upto 5%
Have a look at this, it worked for me (but you need a compatible kernel, most AOSP are so)

[Q] Correct method for Battery charge cycle for new One X

I keep getting multiple views when search the forum regarding CORRECT method for charging One for first few times and then after. Kindly suggest if you know for sure.

don't know which thread but i remember reading about not to drain it down to zero, suggesting to charge when down to around 5%. Hence the dilemma.
Give a hint if you find it again. I haven't read it before
I'm doing as written and have a quite good (in comparison to what you are reading here) battery statistic.
Would you charge it power on or off for first few times?

I don't know wether the advantages with new ROM/kernel take effect when it is off, so powered on.

You have a li-poly battery, and a lithium polymer battery doesn't need any particular charge method or charge cycle... However there's two things you can consider doing for your phone's battery.
1. Charging the phone for a full 5 hour period (even if it shows 100% charged, keep it plugged in to the end of 5 hours) and then wipe battery stat in cwm recovery if your phone doesn't detect remaining battery correctly.
2. Charging it from 50% remaining battery life is much better than letting it go all the way down to empty!
(I know lots of people told you to let the battery drains completely and then fully charge your battery, but trust me, i'm an electronic engineer, I know better, both draining the battery to 0% and charging it to full 100% are bad for your battery life, those were for ni-mh batteries not li-poly)

Exactly. No need to do full charges. Just plug it in whenever. If you are anal, then keep the charge cycling low. Eg keep the battery on a small band of charge state for example 50%-75%.

So, when the phone battery is down to 50%, we charge it.
And then when charged to a 100%, let it stay charged for an additional 5 hours, after that, or 5 hours TOTAL, from the time it is plugged in?

5 hours total, the point of this is to let your battery voltage go to it's maximum capacity (something around 4200mv, you can check the current voltage by dialing *#*#4636#*#* in your phone and going to battery information section)
And also note that full 5 hours charge cycle is just necessary when your phone doesn't detect your battery remaining percentage correctly... In normal situations just charging the phone from around 50% to almost 100% is an optimal charge method and you don't have to do the 5 hours charge...

The point you're trying to make is that for better battery life, it is important to re-charge when the battery falls to 50%, and not wait till it drops to 5-10%. Correct?
For Li-Po batteries, how low is it okay to let it go, before a re-charge?

Exactly...
It's better to charge your phone between 35% to 75% (optimal value is 50%) and not letting it go under 35% but after all as I said there is no need for an specific charging method and this precautions just give you something like 25% more battery life (and battery life is overall life of your phone's battery before you have to replace it, not the 100%~0% duration)
