Is it just me, or is the magnifying glass button really annoying. I am always touching it by accident. Then, due to no mulit-tasking, I have to re-load whatever app I had running. This is esspecialy annoying when playing "I Dig It" The joystick is right above the magnafying glass, so very frequently touching that button. I would like to dissable it, but I don't there there is a way.
The search button? Lol there is a way to disable it I believe its an app called button remapper or something like that

pressing the back button in most cases returns whatever you were on last to the same state as before

Ya, but without multi-tasking, the phone has to re-load the app. That can take up to a valuble 10 second...

Is that available in the marketplace. My phone is stock, so no sideloading.

uhhhh not sure what kind of phone you have but if it takes 10 seconds to reload or resume an app...you might want to have it looked at.

And some games it resets them to the beginning. Very irritating.
It's probably also worth noting that, even with Mango's fast task switching, apps may need to be updated to take full advantage of it.
If an app doesn't know about the new dormant app model, then when you switch to it, it may behave the same way it does today as far as thinking it needs to rehydrate its saved state (or restart completely). It will probably still be faster than it is today, even in a worst case scenario, but apps that are updated with the new dormant model will be instantaneous.

and thats why I love my Samsung Focus with NoDo and the Samsung firmware update.
Hi, I'm Kitty. I love technology but it hates me and to be honest any fix past turning it off and on is a little out of my skill range.
I have the Samsung Epic through Sprint, it is less than three months old. I got up this morning and my buttons for the dialpad, contacts, and messaging were gone. I can't seem to get the dialpad to come up from using the numbers on the slide out keyboard, and I tried restarting it. I have handcent sms, so I can receive and send texts that way, and I can call if I tap on the call button through handcent, but I can't get back to the dialpad.
I saw one post like this but it was for a different phone and had no responses. If I missed a post, I am sorry. I'm a noob and unworthy of the help of you technology gods, but if you just give me some fire I will leave Mt. Olympus. (yes I know he stole it, fire wasn't really given)
I have to call and pay our bills today so it would be awesome if someone knew how to fix my phone without completely resetting it.

Are you completely stock and not rooted? And do you sync with google?
I don't know exactly what rooting is, so I'm going to go with no. I didn't modify the phone past downloading a few apps, but nothing recently or anything that I think would use this.
When I say I love technology, I love technology like a muggle loves magic. I think it is wonderful but I don't understand it.
Also I have the lookout app but I don't think I sync with Google. How would I go about doing that? Sorry I'm so dumb with technology.
Go into Settings. Then Accounts & Sync. Then add a new account.

Oh, I am synced to my gmail account.
Has this (the phone not working as a phone) happened to anyone else or do I just have a knack for destroying technology?

To make you feel better I lost my phone stuff after flashing a theme but never for no reason so you may have that technology curse you are talking about. Did you install anything new?

I have tried to make mine go away or blank out not sure what happened. you might be able to do reset but you would lose your apps and would have to reinstall.
Edit:
Have you tried doing a battery pull and turn it back on? Or have you installed a dialer app?
been on xda since early 2000's, and this is somehow my first post! i guess i followed the rules, and searched, and read and read and reread correctly lol! what's up my epic community, kittikat, & kennyglass123!
are you saying the icons are gone from the bottom dock, or completely gone from the dock and your applications list also? if they are gone from both (which is unlikely), then you'll need to factory reset your phone to get them back. if they are in your applications list (they should be), click applications icon, push the menu button (very left button on bottom of phone that looks like an equal sign inside a half square), click edit, then you can hold down on the phone, contact, or the messaging icon (or any icon), and drag onto the bottom dock. the bottom dock should hold up to 4 icons. the icons can be removed from the dock on accident, or by themselves from time to time (don't know why this happens).
you can also just hold down on whatever app icon you want in your applications list, and place onto whatever homescreen you want, but not practical for the icons you need (which you're going to use all the time).
i also use handcent and don't use the built in messaging app. handcent has a widget you can put on any homescreen, which will tell you how many new texts you have, and can eliminate using the main messaging app. hope this helps!

Ok so I found the phone, contacts and messaging after searching through apps and restarting my phone (they weren't there pre-restarting) Taking the battery out and in didn't seem to do anything.
How do you drag the phone back down to the main dock? I tried following your instructions but got lost. I will be back in a few hours (I have to go to work) and I will try again.
The most recent thing I downloaded was random lolcats a few weeks ago (lame, yes, I know)
And thanks for being patient and helpful everyone
no problem, it happened to me, my sister, and a few other friends with epics also. could have sworn i used to have 4 icons on the dock, and then one day after updating to gingerbread there were only 3. thought i was tripping lol. ok here are the steps again.
1) while your application list is showing, press the menu button (the very left capacitive button of the bottom 4 buttons that light up, below the Samsung logo)
2) choose edit (all your icons should show a minus sign on the top right corners of each icon if done correctly)
3) click and hold down on the phone icon until it starts following your finger, then drag down to bottom dock.
4) viola! profit!!!

Yeah I thought the phone or dialeractivity.apk got corrupted. Did not think it just fell off the dock. Glad you got it working Kitty.

We all know how the back button has worked since the old days. You're in an app and you get an email. You launch the notification. You press back when you're done, and again if necessary to get out of the email app. Android sends you back to the app you were previously using. Right?
Has anyone noticed this is broken in Jellybean? Most of the time, although I can't detect any obvious pattern, the back button sends me back to the home screen regardless of whether I entered an app via a notification or not. I want my back back

IIRC I had the same issue in ICS...JB is no different for me. Guess I just got used to it, but it would be nice to return to the previous app like you said. Waiting for a resolution
That only happens to me in this app. But it has always behaved like that for me.

My note has stock rom but is rooted. Is there any way to clear the cache or something to help speed up the phones responsiveness? When I touch an app icon it highlights for almost a full second before the app opens. That happens with any app on my phone. When I am done using my Dolphin Browser I usually close it by pressing the back button several times and till it clears everything out and goes back to my main screen. However lately I have noticed that I have to push the back button about 10 times before it actually responds. Any help would be great. Thanks"

I'm new to Android and enjoying my Note 8, but one thing drives me nuts. I often accidentally hit the back "button" and have yet to find its mirror image--forward. This is really bad when I am on the web and lose my place and have to navigate back. What am I missing here? How do you undo the Back button?

I was not very clear, sorry. It is hard for me to describe exactly since it always comes as a shock for the app to disappear and when I get it back from the app manager it is not always in the same state, and I have to click back to where I was. If you put in a back button, you need an undo, I think.
Sooner or later I'll learn how to hold the thing without hitting that button all the time.
