So I've discovered a pretty nasty bug that seriously affects my listening pleasure.
I should start by saying that I am a recent Android convert, the GN beeing my first foray into the realm of Android devices.
Having used an iPhone for the past 3 years (and mostly for rocking out to my favourite music on my daily commute) I was initially really excited with the quality of the audio on the GN, even when using the stock iPhone earbuds. This issue however, has nothing to do with the earphones, it happens even when the phones are disconnected
I noticed however that my music had a tendency to start clipping (clicking horribly while playing HQ files in most supported formats). My first step was to download pretty much every decent player I could find - right now, I have WinAmp and PowerAmp installed.
I eventually narrowed the problem down to the lock screen, more specifically when the screen blacks out after being idle for nn minutes. s
o long story short, if I play my music with the phone unlocked it all sounds really good, as soon as I lock the screen (clicking the power button at top right to switch to black screen) the music starts clipping horribly at very irregular intervals.
I've asked a mate to try the same steps on is GN and he says he can't hear any difference, so wanted to put this to the community to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar. Does this sound like a return job?
Being an android noob, I have no idea of any methods of providing debug info, so any input is welcome.
Thanks
Sky
i think all android phones do this...... at least my desire did this as well. Thats if you mean a very slight break when the screen goes black ?

Its just one fraction of a second blip as the screen locks in my experience.....
NO, in my case it's constant, like every few seconds... sounds like a case for replacement imo

Ya that's not a usual problem. Sounds defective. What file types are the music?

when the screen is locked on any Android phone, the CPU is underclocked to save power.
what you're experiencing is audio buffer underruns due to the CPU slowing down. this is normal.
have you tried playing the music using the default music player? you shouldn't experience the problem using the default music player.
Try changing the encoding of your music. The phone is probably struggling to decode your current format in the underclocked state.

I know where you are coming from but I don't experience this issue on my GN.
Go to power amp. Settings, audio engine, advanced tweaks and set the buffer to huge. I don't think it will work as it seems to me its when your device goes into sleep. Like the CPU is being undervolted too much. If it happens on the stock music app (Google music) I would send it back as defective.
OR - Maybe Google don't want you to use ****ty iPhone headphones after all.

it is more likely going to be related to the third party apps he is using to listen to music, that don't know how to keep the CPU alive in a higher state while the screen is locked. I had the same problem on my Nexus S with Skype for a while, where I couldn't actually put the screen to sleep using the power button while in a call - the audio would buffer underrun like crazy. Skype eventually pushed an update and it fixed the problem.

Not related to the ****ty iPhone headphones (lol thanks for that Nat) or the 3rd party apps I'm afraid... the same issue happens when I use the built in speaker, the GN issued earphones, and also regardless of whether I use the default music app or poweramp/winamp.
Changing the encoding of my music is going to be an extensive task if I have to do this for my entire library (30K+ tunes) I'll be here til next year.

what format is your music in, what sample rate and bit depth is it?
ie: FLAC 24bit / 192KHz
not sure oscillik, a range of formats (mainly MP3, some AAC) and bitrates (nothing less than 192k and mostly 320k) again not sure of the samplerate either, would have to check my library which I have no access to for now as I'm on the road

those formats and bit rates should be just fine. just to let you know, bitdepth and bit rate (emphasis on the space also) are completely different things. i think it's safe to assume that the sample rate for your music is likely to be 44.1KHz (which is standard).
you may have a faulty handset, I would demonstrate the problem to the store you bought it from and get a replacement handset.
I get the clipping too but only with Power amp and not the stock player.
Never had this on any phone before.
Might have to get rid! Anyone want to buy a GN 2 days old?

Hey guys,
Have searched a while, but found no solutions for this, so here goes.
Have stock Galaxy Nexus with ICS 4.0.1, build ITL41F, installed Google Music v4.0.9 (with online sync).
Music is synced with google's online music service (even though I'm in UK, worked-around US-only restriction), and plays nicely when the screen is on. Once I switch the screen off (press power button), one of two things happen:
- if sampling rate of a song is below 48,000 Hz -- everything continues as normal.
- if sampling rate is 48,000Hz and up -- every one/couple of seconds music stutters, and jerks. Feels like I'm listening to dusty ol' record!
The 48kHz part is my theory, compared a few mp3s that stutter and some that don't. This seems to happen irrespective of bps rate and other parameters (albeit haven't checked all).
Few people on the forum with similar symptoms (on other phones) suggested it has something to do with cpu throttle during sleep, and that by forcing it to higher frequencies during sleep this could be solved.
Installed setCPU (which required rooting) and forced phone to 1,200MHz in sleep as a trial, and the songs still were stuttering.
Anyone with a similar experience?
Prime suspect would be google_music.apk which is in beta i believe, and... well, i guess then I'm out. What do you guys think? Any idea what might be causing this?
This is my first android phone, so I'm not sure even how I'd go about submitting a bug, if that's indeed the beta version of music at fault here. Any pointers?
Ta,
Dan

That, is weird - because I am facing this with Winamp so I've switched to Google Music to play my music.
Does anyone else face something similar?
Can you do me a favor and play something you know that stutters, and then try it over a bluetooth connection.
I'm curious if this is also related to the static I get when the screen is off and output is analog outputs - digital (bluetooth) works fine.
same here with poweramp... switched to googlemusic... now i have only stutters over the phone speaker..
Same thing happen to me with google music and pandora. Thought it was the connection.

I get the same using the Music app (have WinAmp but doesn't seem to integrate with the lockscreen so don't use it) as soon as the screen goes off (either timeout or manual) you can hear the music slow down and start to stutter, tap the power button, screen comes on and music goes back to normal.
Have noticed it's not all songs, but have't looked into the differences between those that do and those that don't.
Are these locally stored songs that this is happening on? So far so good here but I have been streaming from the Google Music cloud.. I wonder if the CPU is struggling during the underclocked sleep condition with local files that are high bitrate...
Mine are local files, not tried from another source.
I've used both, streaming from Google cloud, and when songs are available offline in the music app -- still stuttering. Haven't tried any other method though.
As for trying to stream over Bluetooth, haven't got any speakers/earphones that could receive the stream at home. Going to try my luck with a local pcworld, if they let me.
I haven't had any problems with Google Music stuttering while the screen is off, but I have had it crash frequently while listening to music and multitasking. I experienced a similar problem with Rhapsody as well.

totally true! thought my phone was a lemon at first.luckily i didnt return it.
yep having the same exact issue. on speaker its just fine. when i plug in headphones or aux to car stereo and screen goes off it stutters / skips or whatever you want to call it.
Turn the screen on and its fine. However doesnt happen to all music. This was streaming from google music for me.
I'm pretty positive you guys have same exact problem as many other people. So far no one has take my suggestion of playing those same songs that stutter, and play them over bluetooth. I bet you don't get any more stutters. I think it has to do with analog outputs vs digital. To output analog, the phone has to use the DAC (digital to analog converter). When it outputs over bluetooth, there is no conversion, and the music is in digital form and transmitted in digital form
If someone can try this I would appreciate it. And you'd be helping everyone find a common denominator in this problem.
Also be sure to star this bug on google code http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22444#c6

Circling back. I recreated the problem with luxferro's 48KHz mp3. Seems whatever happens on this phone to play mp3 with the screen off cannot handle that sample rate. Any 44.1KHz mp3 works fine.

There was another thread like this. The current workaround is to enable the Equalizer for Google Music. You don't have to actually use it (leave it on default) but this solves the problem.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I guess with the eq on its forcing the CPU to get involved even when in low power mode. Unfortunately I believe that was causing other issues with crashing. Since I don't use 48KHz mp3 I'll leave it off.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
For poweramp try settings... Audio engine.. Advanced tweets and change the audio buffer size.

Having the EQ turned on seems to work, just set it to flat and turned the 3d effect down. Guess it'll use less extra battery than using a 'keep awake' app like I was doing.
Recently while I listen to music with headphones I get this random extremely loud buzzing sound that scares the crap out of me when I'm listening to music quietly. I haven't really been able to find the exact cause but have noticed that it usually happens when my phone is pulling data such as when I open a website. Seems to happen on Wifi. I use 3 different headphones and it has happened on all of them. Had this happened to anyone else? I'm currently on gummy 0.9.0 with Franco's milestone 2.

My trusty Fascinate definitely surpasses the iPod/iPhone in all of that with voodoo sound as well as louder volume.
I notice Volune+ is really noisy when listening to music at low volumes. If I disable it, the noise is gone.

Have you tried enabling high performance audio with a custom kernel like glados/leankernel/franco? It really improved S/N ratio when listening to quiet music.
Give player pro with the dsp pack a shot, its all I run and my phone is my mp3player and I use it through my setup in my car...hard to beat..and I'm an audiophile so I'm crazy picky...you won't be disappointed

Well everything so far has been a lie. Using player pro and that loud noise happened twice while I was downloading power amp from the play store. So it can't be DSP manager since I have it frozen with titanium.
Edit: I'm on wifi for the first time today so that could be another culprit. I listened to music for an hour straight earlier over 3G/4G and it hadn't happened at all.

Bringing this back into the light as it is still an issue. I flashed BAMF earlier today after getting fed up with the Noise problem and found that it still exists. back on CM9 if I switch the number of background processes to one (under developer options) I was unable to recreate it. So it seems to be a memory issue. For those that haven't heard the problem, plug in some headphone or an AUX cable into your stereo start playing some music, open some apps, then go to the browser and surf. When a page is loading Scroll around really fast and zoom in and out a lot. Load pages back to back try a few different pages and its bound to happen. Try image heavy pages.
Hi, I've been following this thread and decided to add to the muddle.
I bought an inexpensive portable stereo dock for my Incredible 2, made by Auvio, and got a subscription to Slacker so I could stream music while I worked (I'm a massage therapist).
It uses a short coaxial cable terminated in a 2.5mm stereo plug to connect to my phone, and sounds pretty good for only having 1" diameter speakers. It worked well with my Incredible 2.
Two weeks later I find out Verizon is going to take away my "unlimited" data plan unless I upgrade to 4G, so I got my Galaxy Nexus.
Now when I try to use the GN with my dock, I keep hearing data noise in the speakers as the app grabs & buffers the music. This didn't happen with the Dinc2.
If I move the phone or touch the cable, it reduces, but doesn't eliminate the noise. It does not happen with headphones or the GN's speaker.
Does anyone think this could be related to the issues discussed here? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've had it with both interactive and conservative . I'm currently on the linaro aokp 38 build and I've not had it happen yet (flashed the linaro update today). Before I flashed the linaro update I was on normal aokp 38 and had the problem. A little more testing needs to be done but maybe the linaro tweeks are cause a little more stability in the memory .

Seems like the problem is that, while the music is playing "in any app" its not being givin "High Priority" over the apps in the background or foreground. For example, if you jump to the browser and load a page that requires a large amount of CPU usage, the will cause the CPU to make the music app audio lag which might be the loud screech noise as a result when the music app looses priority.
While music is playing it should have higher priority so the phone doesnt lag the audio if that makes sense.
Thats my guess on whats going on, because it only happens when my phone is multi tasking or taking on CPU load in another app.
Like I also said previously it has happen to me so far on CM9 nightly with that kernal that came with it, and also on blackice and the kernal that came with black ice. also had the problem with the Samurai kernal.
Is anybody experiencing audio distortion with google music and 4.0.4?
It happens a lot (3-4 times during a song) and it sounds the same as a scratched CD (it sorta "hangs" on part of a song for a few seconds).
This is not the same as screen off distortion issue that was reported earlier by a lot of people. This one happens both when I am using the phone and when the screen is off.
Not happening here. Does it only happen when streaming (not stored music)? And is this on WiFi or 3G?

Both wifi and 3g. I doubt it's network related beacause the app shows that the song is fully buffered. Even if I go to the begining of a cached song it still happens.
i experienced similar behavior couples times with screen on playing long track/radio podcast/mix(stored internally) running 4.0.2(google music version was 4.1.512 - before updated logo) while gnex was connect to car aux, but i haven't be able to replicate it again.
Happens sometimes. Doesn't matter whether its local or streaming, but it seems related to the phone locking up or running out of RAM/CPU usage. Something along those lines because whenever it happens (rarely) the entire phone skips or locks up for a second.

It's kinda unusable for me right now because it's happening so lot.

Are your mp3s encoded in the 48khz range? If so it's a bug in the google music player which cause it to 'lag' while it decode the mp3 file, no problems on mp3s in the 44khz range. Dunno about the new ver of google music player haven't try it and don't intend to after i migrate to Poweramp.

Interesting. I just checked and I have about 20 48khz songs. I'm not sure if they are the ones that get distorted. I'll keep an eye on those tracks. Thanks!
This has bugged me for the longest time. *Hopes for a fix*
Just go for Poweramp. It's worth the money and it can play 48khz mp3s silky smooth. Just remember to set the options to 'Highest Thread Priority' and '750ms' buffers. There's a 14 days full features trial version, download it and have a try.
All of my songs are 44khz.
It hasn't happened on 4.0.4 yet.

For those that are having issues when the screen goes off, the following worked for me.
When a song is playing, go to the top of the screen to the "..." and select sound effects. Turn on the Equalizer to whatever you want and it should work much better for you.

hey guys, currently running 1.29 on my unbranded HOX.
Noticed earlier while listening to my music through the stock music player that the songs kept semi skipping for a couple of seconds and the music sounded very, how to put it, crackly and popping, has anyone else had this problem?

It's been posted a few times I believe its to do with beats.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Yeah I have read about beats but I thought the problem being discussed was full songs skipping, also thought 1.28 was supposed to have fixed it, hopefully HTC can sort it out! I'm no audiophile but its damn annoying.
I have it to. First i thought that is was my headset now i read its the phone on 1.26 i never had probs

i had this too. the 1.29 update seems to finally have fixed it.
that or that i am now using ubermusic with beats enabled
Hello. 1st time posting, new Android user.
I have the very same problem and it seems to be getting worse. It's definitely to do with the phone adjusting network, as when it's in airplane mode it doesn't happen at all. As I travel on a train that goes along a coast line, in and out of tunnels - this is really getting to be annoying.
I'm using both DoubleTwist and the stock music player, happens with both EQ/Beats on or off.
I don't really want to buy another music player

But if ubermusic really solves the problem then I might look into it.
Also happens when watching vidoes inc. streaming video.
This really is a bit of a joke - "Authentic Sound" they said. So far it's about as authentic as an old walkman. I'm smitten with the phone in general, but this is unacceptable.
Maybe there's another fix. Perhaps a 3rd party app conflict? Any ideas?
1.29.401.11
I have this probelm as well, I thought it was my bluetooth headphones until I connected my wired headphones and the problem was still there - Poweramp is better than the stock player. Will try ubermusic tonight and see if that helps. The Galaxy nexus had this problem but was sorted with an update - hopefully HTC will do so too - quickly.
I am on 1.29...11 by the way.

remember android has a 15 minute period in which you can get a refund for an app - if it doesn't work open the play store for ubermusic and the buy button should have changed to a refund button.
(ubermusic is also skinnable, i didn't like the default but the ics style one is nice)

beats won't be "authentic sound" - music with no EQ applied will be the most authentic. but i get the point!

Exactly, it seems to be not just the network coverage, but any notification coming while the music is on.
Happens to me while traveling by subway, the network coverage is only in stations, not between them, and the music starts skipping right away after leaving/before getting to the stations. Also if the network coverage is OK (outside) but you get a notification from calendar, music crackle the same way.
Contacted HTC support and they replied to me to get a replacement device from my reseller...
Bit of an update on this one.
I checked what apps were running in the background - to see if there was anything I could kill to see if it made a difference.
I noticed the widget for SeriesGuide was running, despite my not using the widget or the app for a long time (I had rebooted the phone on occasions since not using the app).
So I uninstalled that application, cleared all cache using ES Task Manager and shut down the phone (not reboot). I heard that a restart could just solve the issue anyway.
Hey presto, no cracking audio or video so far - (that's 3 1hour train journeys).
I'm not entirely 'blaming' SeriesGuide, it may have been anything - but it's worth checking whats using resources that isn't running - I'm sure many of you do this anyway.
One interesting thing is, I was browsing the net or something last night on the couch, just using the phone - when I noticed it started to make pretty audible pops for no reason - about 5, and then nothing. No problem on the train this morning though - so for now I'm happy.
Install poweramp and problem disappear
Inviato dal mio HTC One X
I tried Poweramp - despite not liking it, it didn't solve my problem.
Service repair
Sent my HTC One X to service repair for diagnostics and the final statement is - faulty motherboard. Anyone having issues with crackling music player either when the network signal is lost or when the notifications pop up, go and return your phone.
Well, since my last post explaining what I did to remove the crackle, I've had none at all.
I have noticed since I upgraded from GS3 to Note 3 that when I am streaming music to my car stereo the audio will skip or stutter. The song continues to play but the audio cuts out for anywhere up to a second or two. Has anyone else seen this or resolved it?
I have seen some posts that say turning off WiFi fixed it but I still get the skip, if a little less frequently with WiFi turned off.
It seems to go away if I set the developer options to keep the screen awake while charging. So it seems like the CPU clock may be too low during sleep to maintain everything else it is doing as well as audio streaming.
Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!
This happens to me too sometimes. It seems worse when I first start streaming & then it calms down a bit. But it still occasionally skips. I experienced this on my note 2 as well though, so I don't think its an exclusive issue to the N3.
This is happening 4 or 5 times per song, so it is quite annoying LOL

Stock ROM? Stock Kernel? Need more info from both of you.
Sounds like the CPU might be dropping too low when the screen is off, causing the stuttering. You could try a custom kernel with a higher screen off frequency.
Used to happen on my S2 and this was the problem...

Full stock, I believe that is the problem as it is pretty much resolved when I leave the screen on. Still testing this here and there to be sure.
This has happened to me on every rom & kernel I've tried. Which is pretty much all of them for the N3, and everything from stock to CM on the N2.

I have the same problem on my GN3 international version and yes leaving the screen on WILL solve it. However, that's not a practical solution.
Try this, download Poweramp, go into settings, audio, advanced tweaks, set the audio buffer size to Large (+250ms) and audio thread priority to +2
See if that works for you. If it does, then buy the full version even though I like the timbre effect and bass on the stock music player but this is the only solution, so far.

What headunit? I run Kenwood KDC-X995, and never had an issue with it cutting out. THe headunit wouldn't display track info though. The way I fixed this is connecting via the Stock Samsung media player., Everything has been a dream since
I had this problem and it just went away after a few reboots and some time. ..

BTW, what player are y'all using? In power amp there is an option for keep service awake if music.stops while.playing with screen off. And there is also option to use a wake lock also. I am not having any problems nor have I ever so I can't help. The only other suggestion I have is maybe your radio Bluetooth sucks. I went through a period of testing many Bluetooth headset and receivers a couple years ago. Needed something good to listen to my music while I rode my bike. Many of the Bluetooth I tested were very sensitive to the bumps and vibration while riding hard on my mountain bike. The only solution for those were to put receiver right next to my phone. Being in my pocket was too far away or something. I ended up sticking with Sony mw600 as all purpose. It could take any headset, and I was able to use it as a receiver in my truck as it didn't have Bluetooth. Now I also have a Honda civic with built in Bluetooth and all is well. My Sony mw600 oled stopped working though so in on lookout for a nice apt x receiver.

I am using a Sony DSX-S300BTX and have had no previous issues with my HTC Sensation 4G or my Galaxy S3. It only started when I got my Note 3. I use Google Play Music with the All Access service.
Just an update on this. Over the weekend I did a factory reset and this time I did not let it restore settings and apps from my Google account. I went through and installed all the same apps i was using before. And so far I have only noticed 1 stutter/cut out since then. And if I am correct, this only happened when I was leaving my house and it switched from Wifi to 4G LTE on the stream.
Will continue to monitor and see if the issue comes back. But so far I am rather happy.

Trying this recommended app/setting combination, and hope that the skipping stops on the A2DP connection in the car. *crosses fingers*

I came from the Note 2 to the Note 3 and I'm fearing that it's 4.3 that is causing the bluetooth intermittent issue. Whether or not I stream from Pandora or my music player, I get the stutter. Doesn't matter what ROM I use between hyperdrive and beans too. Someone said it could be the adblock that is causing the stutter but I don't have that installed at all. Getting pretty frustrating.
Ended up not working for me,...but keeping the screen on did seem to eliminate the skipping.
Wonder if there's anyway to force Bluetooth not to sleep,....

I ONLY get the stutter when using the stock music player. It never happens when using, for example, TuneIn Radio.
I exchanged 2 Note 3's. The first one had the stutter problem so I returned it. The second one had NO stutter problems but overheated from time to time, exchanged as well. The third one doesn't over heat but, unfortunately, has the stutter problem. So, I just gave up. The PowerAmp solution works for me, though.

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you.
Someone mentioned increasing the minimum CPU frequency and that would solve it. Try upping it to 400Mhz see what happens but this will definitely drain your battery more than usual.

The same thing happened to me on the note 2.... actually the n3 isn't as bad as the n2 was. Fwiw
sent from my ??????? note 3?
SO I have started to notice that it isn't actually the stream stuttering, but a short disconnect of the bluetooth. I noticed that when the music cuts out, it also drops the media connection to my car stereo, in that the artist and song title disappear until the connection comes back. Seems like a bad bluetooth stack or something as I tested a Nexus 5 and do not have this issue at all. And I never had a problem on my GS3.
Hopefully the 4.4.2 update will resolve this issue. Whenever that may be...
I have this problem as well, (stock rom rooted, stock kernel) I use power amp. now however I cant stream my music through bluetooth at all, but when a call comes in, it streams. Doing a little digging into my phone, my N3 seems to think im in a call, and only plays my music through the speaker for your ear. it only started a few hours ago. even when I am not connected to bluetooth, it still plays music through the same speaker. tried uninstall reinstall. I did update apps earlier when I got home (ove wifi). once they were done, that seems to be when this issue started.
any help/suggestions?
