Inc2 security issue... - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

OK, I'm trying to get info out there, but I think I ran into a pretty serious security bug last night. I was unlocking the SIM and put a Tmobile SIM. Rebooted -- and it gives me an error that the card is not correct etc. and then boots straight into the OS with no PIN code.
Is this my phone, some weirdness of what I'm running or what?
Can someone else please try to do this on their phone with locked SIM slot?
I can say that unlocking my SIM card fixed the problem as it'll just whiz right past the error and go to the PIN code now.
Anyway, just want to see if anyone has seen/has this issue?

I did this yesterday with an att Sim and not unlocked just to see what happens. The error I received egad that the card was not the correct one and that the phone is going into cdma mode (Verizon) which is normal. Unless I'm misunderstanding your question
Edit: I did misread your post. I don't have a security pin on my phone so I don't know if it bypasses the pin. Sorry

Inc2 is very picky with SIM cards. You can look all over this forum. It'll work for some and not others, etc

Yes, but that's my concern. If you lost your phone with a PIN set, someone could just override it by inserting a SIM card to get past your PIN code. I no longer get the error since unlocking, but I thought I'd put this warning out. I would also like to verify it on someone else's Inc 2 as well if someone could try.

I'm not concerned about the pickiness, I'm concerned about it being a pretty good security hole.

Tested just now and can report the same issue.
I don't have any sensitive data, but I could see how this could be a cause of concern for some.

OK, well, I'm actually sad that it wasn't just my configuration. Someone needs to file a ticket with HTC and/or Verizon because it's a pretty serious security concern if you ask me. To me, it's not that about storing sensitive data on the phone, but that anyone who picks up your lost phone immediately has full access to your email accounts and anything that comes back to your email accounts including financial data. I would bring it up with Verizon, but my phone is SIM unlocked now which solves the issue.

Done. I suspect it's faster and better than trying to go through normal channels.

networked locked ?

i debranded from orange rom and everything was fine i got an update so i did it now its saying network locked ?
Are you sim-locked to Orange?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
yup but i got the first update and everything was the same now i got a another update and it has gone like this
Try to unlock your sim card and the message should not appear again. You can buy an unlock code directly from Orange or get one online from a reputable sim-unlocking site, even on eBay. It is possible that you flashed a generic rom that included one of the radio versions which causes this network message to appear. This only happens with Orange branded phones for some reason...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I guess the update was 1.21.405.2
Orange phones that have been de-branded seem to either have their WiFi broken or go to SIM Lock. The only way out of it is to buy an unlock code. (See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=693511)
The same happened to me -- although I know it would, and still wanted to de-brand. I just bought a code for £9 from: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300434867258#ht_1893wt_911 popped it in and it worked!
Yeah, it's not ideal but at least you have a de-branded and unlocked phone.
You see what you did there Faddy? You've been told on TWO previous posts SEARCH THE FORUM. In fact the answer to the two obvious questions you asked needed NO SEARCH AT ALL as the answers were recent enough they're still on the front page, but you decided beeing snarky and lazy was better.
Well you would have read peoples issues with the second update and would have avoided this. I have zero sympathy for you.
I have seen many posts by this member... makes you think, could he not have just noted all his queries in one post?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I have to agree with you lot that the OP is lazy and wants spoon fed!
That said, Faddys, if you flash an older radio this should unlock your sim for you again.
I'll let you do the searching to find which one
Edit: When you flash a radio, it goes through 2 reboots. DO NOT interrupt the flash, or remove the battery if you think it's taking too long. This will brick the handset.

It might help others who are following this thread to say how you unlocked it.
Did you reflash an older radio, or did you buy an unclock code?

Precautions before selling phone

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about selling my Incredible and grabbing something new, not sure what yet. I have concerns on how to wipe the phone clean obviously I should do a wipe data and remove my SD card but other than that what else should be taken care of? I'm also curious how my number can be erased from the phone from 'about phone' in settings. Thanks!

Not sure about the phone number question. I'd imagine that when you activate a new phone on your line it will deactivate the old phone. Don't quote me on that though.

Thanks for the link! I think I'm just worried since I'll still be using the same number and I don't want some stranger seeing it.
Unfortunately I think your number will probably be there until its activated on another line. Idk, I've sold a couple phones and never had an issue.

I suppose that's just something I'll have to get over. Another thing, how are bad ESN on phone's created?
last thing before it goes in the box that i would do unroot and ruu with stock radio...
If you knew how to do the manual programming you could put in a blank number you could also call verizon and as them if they can remotely update or walk you through the steps to remove your number just explain why and what your doing they might help you out...
Is it necessary to unroot?
no but if they are not a tech savy person who is going to flash it and they try getting verizon to repair it or something if they break it they will find a nasty suprise in it being rooted. It being rooted might also be something a buyer either wants or does not want... Better safe 100% stock rather than hacked when they get it.
Yeah its really up to you, when I was buying my phone on eBay I saw that some people advertised that their phone was rooted as kind of a selling point and they definitely didn't seem to go for any less money. I personally sold my previous phone (Droid 2) stock though.
As for the ESN, as long as your account isn't delinquent and the phone isn't stolen, it will be fine.
Also, I don't know where you're selling it, but www.Swappa.com is a website all for android phones. Typically ones with root sell for higher, but you can always give the buyer an option!
Thanks a bunch to everyone for the help!

Stuck on lock screen...too many password attempts

I work at a AT&T retailer and I have a customer who bought one for his ~14 year old son Friday night. I set up his Google account and wrote down the credentials for him to remember.
He came in today and was stuck at the lock screen you get after too many login attempts. It asked for either the secret question or Google account information. I used the paper I wrote with his login info and entered it in, it didn't work. I go to the secret question part and it asks for his mothers maiden name which I don't recall ever setting up...in either case the answer didn't work. I believe a factory reset will work but I don't know how without being able to go into settings. Is there a button combo I can hold down when booting to boot into some sort of system manager that would allow a reset?

No the phone is not stolen. If it was stolen I would just hook it up to a PC and wipe it that way but I can't wipe it via my computers at work which is why I am asking how to wipe it from the handset. I myself have a galaxy s2. If you guys don't want to help me because you think its stolen then fine I respect that, I was just trying to save the customer some headache and money cause I don't want to charge him a restocking fee because the phones not defective his son just messed it up.

Do you not have computer software for this? when i worked at o2 uk we had software called Carex (o2 customer care exchange). This had online manuals, Faq's and troubleshooting guides.. Either way you can just use flashtool to flash it back to stock

No we don't. We aren't a COR store, our computers are ****, and the way they are set up we cannot install anything on them. I don't work today, but I'll just bring my laptop in Monday and wipe it that way if he doesn't just say f it and return it today.
I myself am personally still new to android, and I've been looking up some stuff on rooting my sgs2 but am not quite there. So I don't want to get into flashing roms and all that because I'm not anywhere near being able to do that comfortably.
Any of ya'll would be lucky to get me as your salesperson, when I walk into other stores, I cannot believe how dumb and clueless the sales reps are. I know my ****, but even I don't know everything...but I have the decency to go look up the correct answer instead of flat-out lying & bs'ing.

All android phones are diffrent, every make HTC/Samsung/Sony/etc have there own partition structure, so although rooting/modding diffrent models of the same brand of phone is simlar, going from one make to another is quite diffrent By the way, sorry i called you a thief before. But you can never be too sure on the internet, people will say anything to get what they want
You could try this link: http://matthewhollander.com/locked-out-of-your-android-phone/
Also, I agree with jonnyredcorn, in my experience, customer service in the US normally consists of trained monkeys who parrot corporate lines without actually knowing what it means. I'm pretty sure I could walk into a verizon store (my provider) and ask anybody working there what adb is, or what a script is and be met with only blank stares.
So in short, thank AT&T guy for actually caring about what you do, you're one of few.

Flashtool wipes the data partition (with your customer's data including the screen lock) just like recovery does.
Isn't just there a way to disable this annoying feature!?!?
My kids/friends often play with my phone and lock it, I'm using two-step verification, and have to regenerate an app-specific pwd.
I don't mind ppl trying to hack my pattern zillion times and it shouldn't lock down.
This feature sucks my soul out! Hell I hate it!
Any way to disable this nasty "feature" will be appreciate.

Galaxy Nexus Signal Questuon...

I know about the Baseband issue in these phone that they're not getting good signal at all well I think I'm suffering for this is while because I have been dropping calls lately and I don't understand why my friend has a nexus is able to get pretty good signal without Abu drop calls so I was wondering if you guys think I should bring my phone to Verizon so they can replace it or should I wait until the software update that supposedly going to fix this signal issue...
Let me know in the comments please

I think that this is more of a matter of what you want to do. I am not sure what Verizons return/exchange policy is but if you are having problems and can take the phone in and exchange it what have you really got to lose (besides having to re-setup & customize your phone )
If you are OK wwith dealing with the issue (and Verizon has a very liberal return policy) and you want to see if the software update fixes it then wait and see.
Personally, I had an issue with my first GNex that I bought and ended up exchanging it...this resolved my issue.
I doubt it's a a baseband issue since there was a time you had good call quality correct? Reinstall your original baseband or at least do a wipe. Are you using custom ROM? I'm not a programmer nor do I have alot of background but I don't think its hardware as well because it should be an all or nothing kind of thing.
The only think I can suggest is you install the same baseband your friend is using. Also do a clean wipe of the ROM and use a ROM that's well updated. One other thing is how old is your SIM card? Is this your first smart phone? Might want to make your your SIM card is compatible. Old SIM cards have issues like you described.

I'm not sure if it's the best so I don't want to spread misinformation but I actually bought this app. It's the only app I ever paid for. I installed using the disguised method so apparently it even sticks around even if you do a complete factory reset. I paid for one license which allows you to register multiple phones (I think 4 or 8 or something) and all tests have passed that I've tried with it on both of my phones.
Maybe someone with more knowledge can recommend a better one because if there is, I'd get it.
I wouldn't recommend Prey. Prey is the Razer of antitheft apps--all advertising and nothing else.
Edit:
Here is a reddit post I just found from 26 days ago of people chimping out about it: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1gl7g7/psa_cerberus_is_incredible/

My friend's Nexus 4 was stolen last week. A couple of days before, I had installed Cerberus on it. It wasn't rooted, so some of the features weren't available.
Anyway, for about a week, I wasn't getting any info from Cerberus. Then, a couple of days ago, I got a text message saying that an unauthorized SIM was in the phone. I guess the thieves had finally turned on the phone. I was able to lock the phone with a new code, get GPS tracking, call and SMS logs, record audio and video, and get pics of the thief. In addition, it sent me the SIM card info for the thief. It was on Friday night, so I couldn't get the info to the detective who has the case, but tomorrow I will send that info.
Cerberus did what they said it would do (basically give me a chance at getting the phone back). Hopefully with all of the info I have now, we will be able to recover the phone. I'll let you know if I get the phone back.
