Nexus v. Epic 4g Touch - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I know the sgs2 hardware is a lot better, but the nexus appeals so tto me so much. Does anyone else think about importing a nexus or switching to verizon for this phone?

Sure the nexus is nice now but by mid summer next year quad cores will most likely be out.

Once we get a fully working ics ROM on our phones, the Galexus wont be appealing at all.

The only reason I want the GNexus is because of the screen resolution! I hate how big the UI is on the E4GT :/. Although.. No hardware buttons appeals to me as well. But other then that they seem like the same phone in the end

Change your dpi to 160, it looks great. Download go dialer, a calculator app and a calendar app and all is well. Thats the first thing I always do everytime I flash a ROM. I can't stand the default resolution either, it looks like its for visually impaired people.

The resoultion to me looks fine to me for everything but videos. When I compare the qhd of the evo 3d and the wvga of the gs2, the qhd looks way more crisp. The wvga looks very pixelated and blurred to me..I wonder how awesome the 720p display on the nexus or HTC rezound will look

After reading a few more articles, it looks like there is some conflicting information out there. Looks like the original LTE network will roll out in some markets in mid 2012, with Advanced beginning in early 2013. I would guess that most of us won't see LTE until sometime in 2013.

I have to admit, your suggestion sounded hilarious to me. The stock DPI of 240 is pretty hilarious in and of itself...but, 160? I have a Nook Color and that is it's native DPI and what is that resolution, 1024x600, or something like that?
160 pffffft. "I'm at 200 and it's small enough thank you very much"
Then my curiosity got the better of me. I've never tried it, so, how can I judge?
Well, I've gotta admit, it's pretty awesome. I didn't think our screen could resolve that small, but, it can, it does and holy crap the stock setup looks like it's for mentally and visually handicapped people now.
EDIT: Okay, it breaks the **** out of the camera...I'll just stick to HDRcamera for now. There's likely more, lol.

Some people perfer 200, but it messes with downloading in the market, 160 dpi is one of the native android resolutions so it shouldn't mess with the market. And yea it does mess with some stock apps but they can be replaced with compatible market apps that fill the screen nicely. I never had any problems with the camera and dpi changes. I take tons of pics of my kids. What does it do?

The way they deploying lte is starting mid 2012 deploy it on 1900mhz and 1600 mhz pending spectrum/gps approval. Then in 2013 when the nextel network is down repurposing that 800mhz spectrum for lte advance and start another round of deployments as well as voice over lte.

i have mines set at 200. i tried 160 a few minutes ago. camera just force closes when takes pics and do anything with it. bummer.

Thats weird, it could be the ROM your running, I do know midnight, Calkulin and the stock ROM run 160 just fine, no FC's.

im on stock rooted rom. lol dont have any tweaks, that i know of
edit: i forgot i am using the modded camera (better audio/video, no sounds, volume button to take pic). thats probably the reason

I like the setting at 160 dpi but my flash no longer works. Any suggestions. I thought I saw a thread a while ago.

Well I think if the buttons were incorerated on the scren andthere is basicly no edge on the size of the screen they can make a smaller sized phone with a big screen still..
4.3. 4.5 is overkill on a phone IMHO. I wish Sprint would have an Android world phone with dual (GSM/CDMA) radios - sucks that the only world phone is a BB.

I wouldn't mind bigger but the biggest I think it should ever get isfive inches... and thst screen to the edge of the phone and it would still beapretty big phone.
Everything we've heard up to now says 4.3" since that's the size everywhere else in the world, so I'm not sure our preference is relevant. The non-Pentile SAMOLED+ screen they're using didn't allow for the same level of pixel density as the previous models, so they had to up the size. I've heard nothing to suggest we're getting anything different than the standard SGSII screen.
Honestly, I'm starting to lose interest. I've seen numerous reviews and videos and I'm starting to want something else.
It's been out for months in other countries and we haven't even received an announcement about its release...

4.3 would be good.

Epic for Galaxy Nexus?

Go get your EVO 3d already if you really want to test your patience, hopefully you get a 1.5 bootloader too.
Lol i had an evo 3d from day 1 and now its sitting in a box while i use this. Sgs2 hands down better. Get lostkernel with starburst Rom. Epic speed and battery life. Can't compare the 3d screen to the SUPER AMOLED.

Get the evo3d. Oh and make your own rom.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
Lol, Evo3D. I had it on release day... Brought it back for Nexus S4g... Got another Evo3D, rooted, rommed...meh. Aside from the giant hardware deficiencies it had, especially compared to et4g, umm, just blah. Synergy rom was the only compelling rom. CM7 still has a long ways to go and the other millions of roms? Pretty much themes. Also, sense? Ugh.
The grass is always greener bro, keep that in mind... But... Be my guest.
Though I will definitely be going the Nexus Prime route. Still debating switching to Verizon or waiting for the Sprint version.
Otherwise just be patient... Things will be fine... Especially once we get a true AOSP base.

Seems like the only benefits of the nexxus are the screen, nfc, and ics, otherwise 1.2 GHz processor (not sure what chip it is), 5mp camera, 1.3mp front, etc.
Seems like it's not as big of an upgrade as most expected. Once we get ics I'll be happy. I dont see myself utilizing the nfc, and the bigger screen isn't worth however much I'd have to pay. I hope Samsung is on top of the ICS update.

The screen (except in fullscreen mode for games that support it and video) will likely be the same size (of active area) or perhaps closer to 4.3" in scale...remember the on-screen buttons. Though the resolution must be stunning.
I heard it was supposed to be the new OMAP platform, but, I don't recall getting any official comfirmation of that.
The FFC I thought was the same 2.0mp that we have. Though the 5mp seems like a downgrade I'll bet that the optics are better. Besides, making the pictures 'bigger' without adding any high-quality detail is pretty pointless.
I don't care much for NFC myself...and the 16:9 aspect ratio I find very irritating...but, remember on-screen buttons...sometimes....
I'm going in for the Official Google Experience, early updates and no horse-**** when it comes to source code (I'm looking at you Samsung with their older-than-release kernel and HTC with their half-of-the-source code). If it is the same as my ET4G plus a little resolution bump minus a couple meaningless megapixels I'm game.
...who knows, it might even support EVDO rev.b that is pointless to worry about. though, if it is an OMAP those are known for their awesome overclockability...
I'm definitely going to get one, but, I'm not going to be a release-day whore like I usually am. This ET4G is a stellar phone as it is and I'm still enjoying it thoroughly.
Go for it, one less person to make threads like this.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
If it comes to Sprint, I'm laying down the money for this phone. I love my Epic Touch but I haven't tried a Nexus phone yet and ICS looks amazing, along with the hardware that comes with the Galaxy Nexus.
I'll be getting rid of this phone to go back to my Nexus S and just hold onto it until the Galaxy Nexus comes out for Sprint. (if it does)
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Yeah man I like flashing roms too.. but it doesnt get much better than starburst rom with lost kernel. My set up runs circles around any phone I have ever owned including the Evo 3d. The screen is bigger on the prime and has better resolution but if you use density changer that really doesnt matter. Other than that it doesnt really have any groundbreaking updates as far as hardware is concerned and sooner or later the software updates will be available on our phones anyway. That being said... I think you should go get the 3d based on the fact that you even had to ask.
So far it seems to be that unless you are an HTC device or a GSM Samsung device or a Verizon Motorola device you are going to be stuck with the proverbial red-headed-stepchild-device so far as development is concerned...Unless you get a Nexus...though there is still a splinter between the carrier models I'll take it. CM7 and MiUi are all I really want as options, everything else is gravy after that...like netarchy kernels.
Perhaps I'm wrong and just paranoid about this becoming the same disaster I saw the Epic turn out to be...a device that wasn't intended to be Android until the last minute (from what I understand). After coming from a long line of HTC devices it's hard not to be paranoid about that. Which is too bad since HTC dropped the ball this round and Samsung is really picking up the slack, finally.
Getting a Nexus device hedges against this...

It's incompatible because swype doesnt see the resolution because of the Softkeys on the bottom (Screen res. is reported a little less then 720p).
As to getting an update on it...Doubtful there will be any before early 2012.
As I understand it Swype got aquired by a different company (Nuance), so they are in the "thinking box" trying to decide which software should be implemented where...

I've been in the swype beta program for Android for about 2 years and still waiting for a bill to buy the product. Maybe through the acquisition by Nuance there could be an investment to make it a product (OEM licence or end-user) and then engage the developers to finish the excellent work started by the first team.
Start with ICS and pick up some of the tablet market too.

Lol...you crack me up with this. I am curious to see if Sammy will still use MTP on the S3. I was reading a post from a Cyanogen kernel dev last night explaining that since Sammy chose this route their Touchwiz phones (all variants of S2) will always require separate kernels for AOSP and Touchwiz ROMs. I guess we are the only ones that can't have these great "any kernels." I can post a screenshot where it was explained in more detail if anyone is interested. It may be a reason why we have so few kernel devs on board

Previous GSM Galaxy Nexus Owners..

Did you guys switch to this version of the Galaxy S3? Was it worth it? I'm thinking getting this on At&t as I have an upgrade available. Kind of worried about development not taking off yet? Also, what color led notifications does this version have?
Not taking off yet? We have CM9/CM10, AOKP (ICS/JB) and a bunch of TouchWiz kangs!
The notification LED is blue, green, red, or white (depending on the notification) by default. With custom ROMs, its configurable though.
I don't miss my Nexus. The camera on it hurt me to take pics. Do I miss AOSP? A little.. but the hardware of the S3 more than makes up for it.

The notification LED is blue, green, red, or white (depending on the notification) by default. With custom ROMs, its configurable though.
I don't miss my Nexus. The camera on it hurt me to take pics. Do I miss AOSP? A little.. but the hardware of the S3 more than makes up for it.

Thanks for the reply. I think this will be my birthday gift then . Although another 2 years of marriage to at&t ugghhh.
Is the sg3 screen much better than the sgn screen? Also camera is that much better on the sg3? I've been reading some complaints.
And yes I see this version has good dev support now. Thats pretty good that samsung is using led notifications on this device as well.

Hell yes the camera is that much better, the screen is debatable, but my opinion I like the screen on the S3 way better. I can't see the individual pixels on here as I could on the Gnex so it looks better

I get purple notifications for when I receive a Voicemail on Google Voice which was a nice surprise to me!
SysAdmNj, not sure if you are in a 4g LTE area but if you are, the speeds are pretty amazing. :good:
If you are, it's worth the upgrade alone!
I miss some of the support on the gn (paranoid android and aokp) but the hardware and camera are good enough reasons for me to stick with the s3.

I'm getting the S3 today. Been on the Nexus for a long while now. I absolutely love Jelly Bean and Pure Google. But I'm willing to flash AOKP/CM10 in order to get it. I'm not a fan of TouchWiz, but I guess that could grow on me..
I'm looking at that camera on the S3 and how amazing it is compared to the lackluster camera on the Nexus.
I'm pretty close to getting mines at lunch time, you guys convinced me. I'm just wondering where the "pictures taken with your at&t sgs3" is?
My buddy has nexus. Resolution is lower so the gs3 looks sharper. Screen is bigger and cam way nicer. It's like a better version of the nexus once you take touchwiz off.
