Epic for Galaxy Nexus? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Am I the only one thinking about trading this in for a new nexus or maybe a evo 3d?
because I know they're saying be patient on roms but I've been very patient and this some be :/
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

So make a rom or is this just a rant post?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

Go get your EVO 3d already if you really want to test your patience, hopefully you get a 1.5 bootloader too.

Lol i had an evo 3d from day 1 and now its sitting in a box while i use this. Sgs2 hands down better. Get lostkernel with starburst Rom. Epic speed and battery life. Can't compare the 3d screen to the SUPER AMOLED.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

If you wanna wait for the galaxy nexus to release on sprint while dealing with an evo 3d be my guest.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

Get the evo3d. Oh and make your own rom.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!

Lol, Evo3D. I had it on release day... Brought it back for Nexus S4g... Got another Evo3D, rooted, rommed...meh. Aside from the giant hardware deficiencies it had, especially compared to et4g, umm, just blah. Synergy rom was the only compelling rom. CM7 still has a long ways to go and the other millions of roms? Pretty much themes. Also, sense? Ugh.
The grass is always greener bro, keep that in mind... But... Be my guest.
Though I will definitely be going the Nexus Prime route. Still debating switching to Verizon or waiting for the Sprint version.
Otherwise just be patient... Things will be fine... Especially once we get a true AOSP base.

Seems like the only benefits of the nexxus are the screen, nfc, and ics, otherwise 1.2 GHz processor (not sure what chip it is), 5mp camera, 1.3mp front, etc.
Seems like it's not as big of an upgrade as most expected. Once we get ics I'll be happy. I dont see myself utilizing the nfc, and the bigger screen isn't worth however much I'd have to pay. I hope Samsung is on top of the ICS update.

The screen (except in fullscreen mode for games that support it and video) will likely be the same size (of active area) or perhaps closer to 4.3" in scale...remember the on-screen buttons. Though the resolution must be stunning.
I heard it was supposed to be the new OMAP platform, but, I don't recall getting any official comfirmation of that.
The FFC I thought was the same 2.0mp that we have. Though the 5mp seems like a downgrade I'll bet that the optics are better. Besides, making the pictures 'bigger' without adding any high-quality detail is pretty pointless.
I don't care much for NFC myself...and the 16:9 aspect ratio I find very irritating...but, remember on-screen buttons...sometimes....
I'm going in for the Official Google Experience, early updates and no horse-**** when it comes to source code (I'm looking at you Samsung with their older-than-release kernel and HTC with their half-of-the-source code). If it is the same as my ET4G plus a little resolution bump minus a couple meaningless megapixels I'm game.
...who knows, it might even support EVDO rev.b that is pointless to worry about. though, if it is an OMAP those are known for their awesome overclockability...
I'm definitely going to get one, but, I'm not going to be a release-day whore like I usually am. This ET4G is a stellar phone as it is and I'm still enjoying it thoroughly.

Go for it, one less person to make threads like this.

If it comes to Sprint, I'm laying down the money for this phone. I love my Epic Touch but I haven't tried a Nexus phone yet and ICS looks amazing, along with the hardware that comes with the Galaxy Nexus.

I'll be getting rid of this phone to go back to my Nexus S and just hold onto it until the Galaxy Nexus comes out for Sprint. (if it does)
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

Yeah man I like flashing roms too.. but it doesnt get much better than starburst rom with lost kernel. My set up runs circles around any phone I have ever owned including the Evo 3d. The screen is bigger on the prime and has better resolution but if you use density changer that really doesnt matter. Other than that it doesnt really have any groundbreaking updates as far as hardware is concerned and sooner or later the software updates will be available on our phones anyway. That being said... I think you should go get the 3d based on the fact that you even had to ask.

So far it seems to be that unless you are an HTC device or a GSM Samsung device or a Verizon Motorola device you are going to be stuck with the proverbial red-headed-stepchild-device so far as development is concerned...Unless you get a Nexus...though there is still a splinter between the carrier models I'll take it. CM7 and MiUi are all I really want as options, everything else is gravy after that...like netarchy kernels.
Perhaps I'm wrong and just paranoid about this becoming the same disaster I saw the Epic turn out to be...a device that wasn't intended to be Android until the last minute (from what I understand). After coming from a long line of HTC devices it's hard not to be paranoid about that. Which is too bad since HTC dropped the ball this round and Samsung is really picking up the slack, finally.
Getting a Nexus device hedges against this...

If you could get a rezound you wouldn't rather get the nexus? Rezound is using our same Qualcomm S3 MSM8600 chip.
As a phone, the S2 is absolutely fantastic. Does everything I want it to do. As a carrier, I'm still on the fence with t-mobile. Data speeds are plenty fast, but data reception seems to be a mixed bag.
well... when it comes to Reception, that is really the nature of the AWS technology which requires 2 wide bands 1700+2100 for up and down to work
so building penetration is always a compromise

Now that I am on the Galaxy S2, I can tell you that it is by far the best phone that I have ever owned. Even stock, it is absolutely blazing fast. After I put beastmod on it, the thing just flies, and this is before OCing. Keep in mind that ICS is supposed to be able to utilize dual-core technology to it's fullest so when the update comes up (it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when), our phones will be in for a nice tune-up. As for as internet speeds go, I can tell you that it is BLAZING fast. It is faster and more reliable than when I had my G2 (which was just last year).
I can't post pictures but I can tell you that the fastest I have ever gotten with my S2 (in the same service area that I tested my G2 just last year) is 31MBPS. For daily usage, I consistently get 7-14MBPS. I am downloading HD videos off of Youtube in a matter of 5-10 seconds. I am downloading and finishing music downloads as soon as it pops up in my notifications bar. The phone is fast in every way, and everything flows so well together. No lag, no hassle, it just works.
got my phone a few days back from my awesome girlfriend, amazingly fast, battery only lasts a day, from 9 till 6, as i always use data connection, 1850mhz, not much of juice for this 1.5 dual core monster, resolution is a draw back with this nice screen 4.52" i am talking about, only 480*800? meh, waiting for miui roms........ only alpha versions atm, touchwiz looks gay.
speaker is way better than i9000, louder at least! some people say they want metal back cover, i say hey, it is light!!! with this kinda size!
i would give 9 out of 10 for this phone, i wanna buy the sprint version, lol, cdma 2000. not available in china yet, too bad.
What app do I use to test for lines and blobs?

Galaxy Nexus ruined Christmas....

Maybe I am ungrateful for making this post but I know I am not the only one who feels like this. About a month ago I was rock in a blackberry tour not because I couldn't get any other phone but because I was semi happy with it and no other phone period really had any affect on me.
Then one day I saw an epic touch in Craigslist for 200 and thought it was a scam but it was real. At first I had the phone. Its big, Los, battery, etc. Was gonna sell it for profit but I already sold my tour and the deal was just so good. Then started rooting and ics theme and tweaking made me fall in love.
Then got my gf a nexus s and put ics on it and it began. Then I went to Verizon and touched the galaxy nexus. It will cost me 1000 dollars to switch to Verizon with everybody. The physical of this phone to me is beyond any phone I have ever touched. Ice cream sand which is what android was always supposed to be.
Our screen is better in colors and our gpu is better and we have an SD card slot. But all that doesn't matter. Samsung will destroy ics with touchwiz and then the waiting game will start for a pure rom.
We all want the nexus lets just face it. The minute sprint has it most of you are gone like me.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
The only real life difference will be ics ... and its not worth $200 plus a wasted upgrade to me ... would much rather save it until quad core 2.0 GHz processors WITH ics come out like 3 months after it gets to sprint ...
Actually, I don't want a nexus, or galaxy nexus that is, with those ugly ass on-screen buttons. This phone is better IMHO. Now, if the SGS3 gets released with ICS, I will be even more sure I don't want the galaxy nexus. Touchwiz or no touchwiz. The S line is rock solid, and people that understand that, know that. (TMO's maybe not so much...)
But that's just me.

Yeah I know but physical design has to count for something. The nexus fits in the hand just right. Anyway I know its not that serious its just sad to see what HTC and Samsung will do to these phones. Give customers a choice. Most people won't root there phone.
Google has to stop selling out, yeah tons of people have android but probably 90 percent of them don't even know what android can really do.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I can wait.
I need external SD support for my music and movies.
I can wait for devs to ready ICS ROMs, and replace TouchWiz with ADW.
The only thing I would like to have is the HD resolution, but again, I can wait.
My next phone will be a quad-core with HD resolution.
This will probably mean the GS III.
Hey we all can say we can wait but that's easy to say since you don't have a choice. When or if sprint gets the nexus then will see if you wait.
At the end of the day we still have great phones but don't act like the s3 is around the corner knowing sprint it will be September again. And we still don't know what the s3 will have.

Sorry but I have ics on my ns4g and I would not trade this phone to the hardware inferior one just because of ics. I wasn't that impressed with ics. I'm running peter Alfonzo's ics nightly. Everything works on the ROM, so its not because something isn't working. Ics seems slower on the same phone versus 2.3.6. I'd rather take better performance over eye candy.

We are not talking about the nexus s as I have tried all those rooms and they are slower because its still very new is it recall fair to compare it this early.
Second this phone the epic and nexus are pretty much the same phone but.
Nexus looks better feels better because its slimmer. On a design point it kills this phone ( this phone is nice too but nexus is an evolution of what phones will be )
And the most important thing is it is a nexus. Is anybody here looking for to touchwiz please tell me. Do you really want Samsung over Google. I trust Google is better with there own software os.
I can't even put a case on this phone or it feels like I am holding a brick. Sorry to say this because I like my phone but its design is like somebody ironed an iPhone flat. And with a case it feels like a HTC phone.

IMO it's not about being a "hater". Sure ICS is sweet, and it would rock to have a Nexus Galaxy, but to spend the cash(1k according to OP) just for a phone upgrade is something in the likes of greedy little kids with the latest toys. It just doesn't make sense given we all have great phones.
The specs on our phones are great, so unless someone can jump on for cheap it just doesn't make sense. If Sprint got it people might be more interested but paying ETF + whatever it'll cost is just silly to do for essentially an OD update.

Basically this thread can be merged with this thread
[Article] Sprint's network sucks (nothing that wasn't known before)
On a serious note, the speeds were about the same on 3g and wifi.
Nexus had slightly faster uploads on 3g/wifi. E4GT had slightly faster download avg on 3g. They are roughly tied for download on wifi. None of the numbers were very impressive, but that is the fault of the network rather than the phone.
Further supports my decision to stick with the E4GT for now. I need to be blown away in order to even contemplate switching.
Thanks to qbking for the video and sfhub for the recap.

Debatable.
While we will always take better download speeds, upload is used when browsing the web etc as well so having a better balance between them could give better real world usage results.

See I guess I'm one of the lucky ones, I never seem to struggle with my data connection unless I'm just in the middle of the boondocks (and in Alabama, that could be anywhere lol) and typically at that point I'm driving, not trying to browse the web. Around town and the cities where my family lives and I visit often I always get a quick connection so, again, just not enough of a difference for me. But for others it might be more than enough.
The overall specs of the Nexus just don't seem like a huge step up from the E4GT, not nearly enough for me to jump on it without waiting to see what else might be in store in the nearish future (SGSIII).

But, if you have the money or whatever, going from the SGS2 to the Galaxy Nexus IS a bit of a spec bump.

If I recall correctly the GPU in the Galaxy Nexus is a bit better.
But yes, LTE and Screen are the two noticable upgrades.
LTE will be relatively significant by the end of the year and into next...
And I can only conclude that the screen upgrade is huge for a lot of people since SO many people buy phones based on the screen.
A pure Google experience with on screen buttons (with no need to root and flash) is also apart of the package.

Yeah the resolution isn't bad and you're right, if you have the money a ged device is always fun. Especially if you're in an LTE area. But by the time lte gets big I hope to see the sgs3 anyway.
As for gpu, I would argue the Mali-400 definitely has an upper hand on the sgx540

qbking or John, Im still rockin my og epic and have the oppurtunity to get a e4gt for a decent price, do you guys think its a big enough jump performance wise to go for it? Or do u think its not quite worth the jump? You both have done right by me in the past so your opinions are valid and welcome.

The ET4G is the best phone I have ever owned and I don't think I have had a close 2nd. It has the best Touchwiz features the OG Epic has if you run rooted stock. Its virtually impossible to make the phone lag and battery is twice as good as my Epic was...no joke.

Anyone moving to the gnex ? Should i?

I would like to know if is worth to upgrade to thr gnex. Thanks
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
No. Already has inferior hardware. Go with the Evo Lte if you have to upgrade now.

Not an HTC fan. Plus is an ugly phone ..lol. I'll wait for the gs3 then
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Well I played with the one x at att and must say it's better looking. The screen is amazing though. Our GS3 will probably have the s4 also though.

If the sprint version had the same design as the one x j would consider it

It's got some nice additions, ie sdcard slot, kickstand, and larger battery, but it's definitely not as sexy.

No real point in upgrading to a sprint lte phone right now as there is no lte towers. You will be stuck with sprints slow 3g. Best to stick with the e4gt until the galaxy siii comes out.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
You are right. However in my house I have no 4G except upstairs window. When home just keep wifi on and use my own internet. Even 3G and calls iffy in house. Without my Airwave my phone would be a brick most of time. Hope so called Network Vision improves coverage. I have no idea when lte is turned on if that will be any better than my current wimax 4g.

Have you played with both phones at the same time. Also are you bored with your phone? These are reasons to upgrade and of course do YOU think its worth it to you to upgrade. I have seen I love Gnex threads and I returned my Gnex threads, at the end of the day its really your preference. Go to Best Buy and check them all out... Jus' My Opinion
or you could just search one of the other 40 threads about the exact same thing!

Search? Does not compute

I made a thread about this the other day too because I have an upgrade so I went down to the sprint store and played with the Gnex and I dont know if there was something wrong with that one or what but it ran like ****! Force closes everywhere, could not get facial unlock to work. I just installed ICS Hydra rom on my E4GT and it runs SOOO much better than the Gnex. I also talked to a sprint employee and they said the E4GT is far superior. I wouldn't do it!

Now that would of been way too easy..... .Hmmm use search and find out about the phone I want to upgrade too or post a thread and let others tell me what to do.... decisions decisions....

Optimus G Sells 1M Units?

Just saw this online. To be fair, this is probably 1M worldwide, but the phone has not yet been released in China or Europe, and that is still a not insignificant amount of handsets in the quarter or so since the release date. If they keep bringing premium handsets like the OG to market LG could easily knock HTC or Motorola out of their spot in the Android Ecosystem. Samsung is likely not to be moved from it's spot any time soon, but it's impressive for a company that the average consumer doesn't even consider when thinking of an Android phone. Maybe they should buy some airtime and run some commercials :silly:
I'm sure LG can make a mark on the smartphone market especially after this phone. When I first got my epic 4g, Samsung had a crap reputation in both their software and their updates. This was a time when HTC was the big player. On top of that, they now got the most active community, something else HTC had. If Samsung can rise out from the bottom like that, anyone can, they just gotta play their cards right.
Man time sure flies, I had that phone for 2 years and I chose the underdog again, lol.

I actually followed the exact same path. I bought the epic because of its specs and because of its relative obscurity. Same reason I bought the OG.

I knew so many people who got the Optimus S.
It was free and a great phone. We had so much support for that little thing. I remember we even had ICS when we barely got GB from LG.
They took forever to release it and it was very buggy. So they had to release a downgrade back to Froyo.
I loved it and still working for my brother. 2+ years.
Now with the OG this phone is a beast. I almost never get a lag and games play well. I love the fact that it has 2GB ram so I could truely multitask. So if more people see why we got this phone than LG may put more support and even more people will like it, etc

Also had the epic. They have had one of the best development communities around. Hope this phone will get the same support. This phone is awesome if they can fix the signal issues. But remember when the epic first came out is when Samsung took on the nexus line. Same goes here for this phone. It should have a good future ahead of it.

Yeah we did have a great community. I miss my epic. I will try to get us sense, blur, xperia, and miui after cm. If lg would release Korean jb source, we could be almost at cm. Maybe firefox os, ubuntu for phones, and webos as well. Those are a bit more difficult though.

I trust my man xboxfanj, I always had a top notch experience with my Epic, and always had the latest release of Android on it. I have no doubt that the development for our OG will match any of the development for any other device out there.

Yeah the Epic development was slow at first as well. We didn't get CM7 going til slightly before CM9 due to lack of source.
I actually think by lowering the price of this phone will be good for getting more units to users hands and in turn will create more developing.
I've been watching Ebay this past weekend and it seems unreal that one could land such a great phone like our OG for around $325.
It wouldn't be long before people realize how much more of a bargain it is to just pick up this phone over anything Sprint currently has to offer.
