So for the past week a tower has been down in my area (33884) and I've called Sprint a few times regarding missed calls, text not going through or receiving, slow data to none at all etc... Well the first time I called they said a tower was having some issues and that it should be resolved by 11/17. Well today 11/18 it was worse. So I called again, this time the rep informed me that yes the tower in fact has an entire voice and text outage! OH NICE! So I asked if this tower being down had anything to do with Sprint upgrading it's towers and/or Sprint Network Vision, she unfortunately could not confirm anything, but did state that my area was receiving "capacity upgrades" at this time. Does anyone know what these "capacity upgrades" are? Are they Sprint Network Vision related? TIA!
I'm not sure but it sounds tasty!
Sounds like BS to get you off the phone. She probably had a break comimg up.
If that were the case then capacity upgrades have been going on for.the past two months in my area.

Yeah means that the tower can't handle all the connections.

I would think (and hope really considering the tourist traffic) that Sprint would consider large cities and touristy areas a high priority in their upgrade strategy.
I live in the SW area of Vegas...4G speeds are between 9 & 13mbps down and reach the cap of 1.5mbps up at my house (tower upgraded). The strip as well as other areas are inconsistent. In the Henderson area where I work I'm, according to sprints tower placement map, in between two towers and 4G for the most part is unavailable. As for 3G, it's typically 100-200kbps down and even slower up.

Exactly what I told Sprint! I'm going to write a letter to them. The Rep I spoke with yesterday informed me that the tower I use is only operating at 41%, when in fact it should be at 95%! Yes 95%!!!! He said even a tower operating under 90% is really bad. Rep stated 70% of my calls when on that tower are being blocked!

That's pretty bad, I'm thankful my area isn't that bad. I'm not sure how fast these upgrades are going to ACTUALLY take place (even though it says in the next 6 months) considering they are now probably upgrading their towers to LTE and making that even more of priority than 3G.

They appear to have been busy in Milwaukee, as well... Several voice and data upgrades within a square mile of my house... But I haven't noticed any appreciable difference in performance.
Interestingly, I note that according to their map, I have 8 signal sources within a mile of my house, and yet I still have inconsistent data speeds. Of course, according to Netmonitor (Android Market), the source MY phone connects to has not been upgraded, nor is it scheduled for an upgrade.

I have been dealing with Sprint this past week about very slow data speed. I have been getting around 50-100 kbps down and 300 kbps up. When I went to a nearby town I was getting 800- 1300 kbps down and 400-500 kbps up. All of these are on 3G. Today when Sprint called me I was asked if " EV " was displayed instead of 3G. I was told there are 3 levels to 3G. I vaguely remember EV before I rooted and ROMed but I have not seen it since. Is indication of " EV " typically removed from a custom ROM? I have used Frozen 1.2 and am now using RandomRom 2.3.4. I tried all of the available modems with Frozen with no change before I installed EG22 and Flashed RandomRom. I have a few friends that also are complaining about slow data speeds in our area so I don't think its my phone anymore. Any thoughts or advice on the subject?? Thanks!

Sprint has horrible 3G speeds which is also why Im going to drop them soon.
After Sprint did not renew its tower leasing agreements and lost its Alltel tower network, its % nationwide coverage area dropped precipitously. Even with SERO, I am now questioning whether it's worth staying with Sprint given the decline in service over the past few years.

You're most likely on 1x. The Epic doesn't have 1x or EV signal icons by default. Try this app and it will tell you everything about your connection.
before the evo came out, sprint was worty of its name.
it had the fastest 3g in the country. 3-5mbps on my hero in nyc
then evo came out and who needs 4g when your 3g is more than enough?
Everyone saying they dropping sprint soon. Sprint will phase in their new type of signal next year, they will discuss it on the 7th of next month. I think they may have started on some towers. My 3G has greatly dropped but my 4G is almost as fast (if not as fast) as my DSL internet. I am happy with it and being with Sprint 6 years and compared to what others complain about from their service I'll stick with sprint for 6 more. Unless they raise prices.

Well, hopefully it changes things for the better, but I still don't see how it makes up for the lack of towers. And what's good is 4g if I can't get it in 50% of locations? Giving it until the end of the year.
I guess im lucky. I get ok 3g (0.9mbs) and great 4g ( 5-7 mbs). But driving around my city, it cones and goes once I hit a few city hills.

Me and my g/f both have Epics. Mine is rooted and running a custom rom and hers is stock. Both of us were experiencing crappy data speeds until i updated both phones modems to EH17.
Speeds are much better in some places where we have good signal, from 300k to 1.5 - 2.2mbps. So it may have something to do with the modem you currently have as well.
Although i did talk to a sprint employee at the nearby store and I was told they were going through some tower upgrades in the DFW area. Tearing down old towers and putting up new. He suggested that it would be around 6 to 8 months time before things are completed.
I also have been in contact with sprint over the last 6 weeks or so about crap 3g. At times I see 12KB downloads with 6 out of 6 to 6 bars.

This. Anyone ever run their phone in airplane mode from a full charge to 0%? The battery lasts AGES. I had to run benchmarks repeatedly on performance mode for hours to kill it purposely. Stopped at sprint store and they said network was overloaded and they couldn't even run normal tests on my phone to diagnose. I think I am having issues anyway since I can't seem to get over 175 kBs in the last two weeks before today and I have a tower 1/4 mile away. That's about how 3g is for me yesterday in Torrance, CA. Very poor performance. When calling Sprint to ask about possible network issues, they kept me on hold for a supervisor for >30min before I hung up. Sprint's network is starting to be a major concern for me.
Sent on the run.
Where i live I am very lucky to break 50k and that been going on for about a yr.
I was going to make a topic about this earlier. Yes sprint did increase the data throughput. As soon as i woke up i checked my speeds as they could not sell a 3g phone that cant even stream music. Sure enough speeds almost at 1mbps normally in my area 50kbps to 300kbps.
I am not a lawyer by any means but since the actual sprint website says:
Sprint Mobile Broadband devices operate at average download speed ranges from 400-700 Kbps with peak rates up to 2 Mbps, and at average upload speeds of 40-70 Kbps with peak rates up to 144 Kbps in Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev 0) coverage areas.
Sprint Mobile Broadband devices that are EVDO Rev A will operate at average download speed ranges from 450-800 Kbps with peak rates up to 3.1 Mbps, and at average upload speeds of 300-400 Kbps with peak rates up to 1.8 Mbps in Mobile Broadband (EVDO Rev A) coverage areas.
https://www.sprint.com/business/products/products/evdoCoverage2.jsp
Do I have any recourse based on what they say I should get vs what I actually get? Maybe a breach of contract or something or violation of TOS......thems my only legal terms I learnt and can use, lol.
In all seriousness, it just doesn't seem right that I am told I would get one thing and I am locked in for 2 years with it but yet I get another. Kind of a bait and switch thing..........wait.......another legal jargon phrase that just came to me, haha.
Increase In Speed
For the past month I been doing a speed test every morning as soon as i get into work. Till today I have not gone over 0.5 Mbs download (Honolulu, Hawaii)
But today I ran the same test i do every day and was able to hit 1.56 Mbs!!!!
Did a 4G test and got 0.1 Mbs ...super crap speeds as always.
Ran some more speed test on 3G and was surprised to get all of them around
1 Mbs. Sprint must have upped their throughput for the iphone 4 crap.
Wonder how long it will stay like this. If my speeds drop again after the initial iPhone crap I'm going to be very pissed.

Starting?! Man, sprint's network has sucked big bawls for roughly the last 2 years. maybe even longer but iv only been with em for 3 years. I got 1 year left. Hopefullly ill be earning more by next year and jump ship to verizon and their vastly superior LTE network...even VZW's 3g network matches Sprints 4g in most areas of Los Angeles.
3g gets me 1.30mbps down and .50mbps up. Haven't been able to test 4g speeds, as I can't seem to get a 4g connection eventhough I'm smack dead in a 4g area.
I noticed I dramatic increase at my work. I couldn't believe it. Previously it was less than 300 kbps.

I don't trust the speedtest app anymore. I did a test and it showed that I was getting some horrendously slow speed. Shortly after, I got a notification that doubletwist had an update. Speeds have improved dramatically, but I'm not sure why the app doesn't reflect that.

Speeds have been fine for me personally, this is all 3G at my home in eastern West Virginia.
I live in NW Indiana (just outside of Chicago) and last night my service was so slow I could not even stream Spotify (with 3-bars on the 3g meter), when I tested with speedtest app I was getting +,- 100 kbps, is that what I can expect from my new carrier?
My phone is rooted with Blazer rom and shows baseband EG31 and Kernel EG30, is that ok or could I have messed up the modem? I tested at 4:40am this morning and got over 1 mbps....
I have noticed, I live in New York, a significant service downgrade in the past three months. My unfounded theory is that it has something to do with the Iphone launch, because service was great about 6 months ago. I had very few problems.
I've noticed the same thing here in Oak Park, CA (just a bit NW of LA), starting about a couple of months ago, on both my Photon and my Epic Touch. Sprint's 3G service has become terribly inconsistent and generally bad.

Same here, data sucks balls big time but voice so far has had no issues.
Its the dat part that is killing it. Yet we have to pay that extra 10 bucks a month just because its a smart phone aka data usage. What a joke.
Or maybe that extra 10 bucks is to pay for data usage for Carrier IQ... LOL
It's not really because of the iPhone, although that plays a small part in it. Sprint has just been lazy overall in maintaining and upgrading their network while the majority of customers have switched to smart phones

Honestly, I think its just work being done on the network. I noticed the same thing, but 3 days ago I did a prl n profile update (I had done this several times before) n started getting much better service, including 4g. I'm not saying g this is the case for everyone. If you do jump ship, have fun with Verizon. I dealt with them for years before sprint. And if you think sprints customer service is bad. . . Also their data prices are INSANE! but, Verizon does have a better network. TO ME, being able to stream my music collection without worrying about data is more important than being able to watch a movie on 3g, but thats why we get choices if sprint was right for everyone, Verizon wouldn't be in business, and its the same the other way around
If I was helpful, give thanks

Just keeping checking the website that was posted before. We are making a lot of updates and changes to make the network better. I have seen better improvement myself and know more are coming. The next two years are going to have a better and faster network. Remember that the USA is huge so it does take time. The other thing to do is preach to everyone to use wifi whenever they can so that there are less phones on the network until the project is completed in 2013!

Yup lots of variables.
each site can handle only so many people. Older sites have overall capacity issues. Thats to say some sites can handle x amount of users, and x amount of data. Some sites get user upgrades to handle more users but not data, causing a super slow down.
Then theres the issue of interference. Add in any issues your device might be having due to flashing a custom rom, kernel or modem and it all adds up to way to many possibilities.
The good news is, you verified your modem is good, not only did you get slow data speeds one test, but later it was good.
I have a similar experience with my Stock Epic Touch.
Some locations in Dallas, TX have horrible data speeds, while others are hit and miss.
One of the worse i am aware of is the are of i635 / hwy 80. Ever weekend i meet my dad for lunch at a BBQ place in that area. I test every weekend and the speeds are SOO SLOW. But once i leave the area im back to 1meg or so..
Overall i am still happy. I am just patient i guess.
yap service absolutely sucks, that's why I have started using the ROAM method and hopefully within a couple of months sprint will let me leave at no cost.
I think the implementation of "Network Vision" is going to cause things to get worse before they get better in many areas.

I was running Caulkin's 1.0 at the time, and it was pretty nice up there.
For those with less than great reception try this!
Dial *18 from your sprint device.
That is the number for "Sprints Cell Tower Enhancement". It will lock on your present location and boost your signal by at least one bar. You will have to do this as you move about to different locations/towers but if you are stationary and having signal issues, it can help.
Please let me know your results. Wish you luck! :good:
**EDIT**
THIS RELIES ON DIALER CODES. THAT MEANS THIS WILL NOT WORK ON ANY CYANOGENMOD BUILD
IF YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE DIALER CODES ENABLED TRY ##RTN# (##786#) IF YOU GET VIEW OR RESET YOUR GOOD TO GO. IF NOTHING HAPPENS THIS TOOL WILL NOT WORK

I'm still a little skeptical however... Will do some more testing.

NICE!! Glad to hear it, please do test. I would try at work but I already have 100% reception. Makes me worry about radiation haha
Don't really see how this just got launched and is part of the Sprint Network Vision as there are posts about it that are 2 years old. Supposedly it reconnects you to the nearest Sprint tower so if there are 2 towers within range it will only connect to the nearer one, did nothing for me. I'll keep trying...and wishing!

Unfortunately, this can't change the laws of physics. I'm still in a near-dead zone with -101dBm signal.
I didn't see bars move but went from a solid -87 to -85

Hmm I guess the reason it got brought up again is it will start making a bigger footprint now than two years ago. With all IDEN towers nationwide to be converted to CDMA by June 2013 you'll get better coverage and bandwith when using this code due to extra towers.
"Network Vision: Sprint will rollout LTE nationwide, reduce dropped calls by 20-30%, improve 3G speeds 30-50%, remove IDEN network and introduce Sprint Connect on CDMA, increase capacity and introduce HD calling by 2014 nationwide!"
All in all if it helps it's worth it!

Uh, the Network Vision project will not add towers in any significant way. The current IDEN towers will be retired, and the 800 MHz band will be repurposed using essentially the same towers Sprint uses for 1900 MHz service. Perhaps once there is 800 MHz service in most areas, the *18 feature might do something novel (like force a shift to that band) but that is just speculation. Meanwhile, experts tell me it has been around for years and doesn't do much at all.

I guess this will only work if you are on a touch wiz Rom.

If my 3g speeds are increased by 50% at the most, then I will be looking at 450kb/s down, and about 120kb/s up. That puts me 5 times the speed of dialup? Sprint is really setting its sights high.

ROFL... I guess it's better than nothing while we wait... LTE looming in the FAR distant future. We all are going crazy with these turtle speeds.

Strange, are you on the latest PRL? Try to update it and reboot and try again. Let me know if this fixes it.

Didn't do a thing when I was at work with a -100dB signal strength.
I'm running StrongSteve's stock modded rom. But there's only one Sprint tower in my town.
So I have been horribly frustrated with sprints 3G speeds since I got my epic. I live in metro Detroit. (Fairly large sprint market) and have averaged around 50-75kbps DL. With a 600ms+ ping. And there is ZERO wimax anywhere. I was getting fed up. Until over the last month or so I have seen 600%+ increase in speeds. I now average closer to 500kbps DL with a 111ping. And I have even had consistent tests of 1mb DL. Could this be the first fruits of network vision? Or other tower upgrades? Or somehow less traffic. I had considered it could be the newer ROM/modem. (CM10/FH13). Has anyone else seen recent speed increases?

yeah man here in st pete i finally saw a consistent 1 meg down and i was inside ( but near a window) the network map said theres about to be another speed increase here its usually a lie tho.... i doubt its anything permanent sprint fails im moving to straight talk once its all over but im supposed to have lte in my area at the end of my contract and i got employee plan pricing if i have lte at my house then ill keep them if not oh well. could network vision not just be a giant false marketing scheme?
edit well i just did a speed test and im back to the usual 300kbs lol lucky i pay a dial up price and get dial up service XD so i guess not. sprints the most useless unlimited ever. Even living in a wimax area the wimax sucks everywhere but the beach. ( where i dont even need wimax)
I have 5+ months horrible experience with Sprint 3G speed after last two days on roaming service came back this morning better than ever from 0.09Mbps download to 0.89Mbps download huge improvement sadly it last till this evening when service cut off came back horrible as always. :banghead:
At least I know they are working on it.

Whatever spring says "network vision" is. Clearly they are trying to or want to improve their service. One area they are strong, customer service. But their tech(except phones) sucks. So the question for me is, just like the first guy who replied. Is if they can get LTE working by the time my contract is up. Or at least get 3g solidly above 1mb.. then I would stay no question.

+1, I have 1 year left on my contract. Next July I will re-evaluate sprint and see how things are going. If sprint stepped up to the plate then bonus I will stay but if its the same ol song and dance crap I am gone. Maybe this xmas I will do that re-evaluate of sprint and see what is up and just maybe I might buy off the rest of my contract, pay a etf and jump ship. But having to pay a extra 10 bucks a month just because of a smart phone crap aka 4g is bull**** considering sprint does not have wimax, 4g, lte or what ever here where I live and 3g is absolutly slower than dial up modem speeds.
Well Sprint Vision says that in the next 6 months a tower will basically be put in my backyard, according to their map. My contract is up in 12 months, I'll make a decision then.
I get 8kb/s out here in Toledo....

Mine has picked up in some areas the past few weeks but its still crap in other areas and at random times. Its also still much slower than 3G from any other carrier. My Sprint 3G speeds are often similar to Tmobile Edge speeds I had 4 years ago but Edge was more consistent.
Every week my 3G speed changes, today I am getting less than 100kbps when last week or so I was getting almost 600. I am hoping this is due to them upgrading the towers and that is causing the inconsistencies.
Are you using updated maps to see this info or are you just using the maps on Sprint's website?

Pretty sure they've actually, finally, started work on Network Vision for our area.
We're supposed to be apart of the network vision plan for the second half of 2012.

If they do manage to get LTE going by next summer I'll for sure stick around. Prolly with the 2nd nexus device if possible.

I practically guarantee they will by then.
Personally I'm more concerned about getting 3g speeds in the 1.5 - 3 mbps range and the improved service that comes with Network Vision.
Really couldn't care less for LTE/Wimax with that. :silly:
Same crappy speed here.
metro Detroit here too, and I haven't noticed any increase. For some reason my phone now roams constantly. Hopefully not so much that they terminate my contract and force me to jump on T-Mobiles new deal.
