Dont kill the noob - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I haven't rooted and rommed in a long time. I was wondering if you guys could help me. I'm not a complete noob, I have some tech know how and I'm extremely good at following direction. What I need help with:
My phone is completely stock at the moment and I want to install a rom, maybe beastmod or one of the other ones. Which root method do I use if I want to install a rom?
correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume I use this method outlined here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103 to install cwm.
After I'm finished with that, I'm ready to install a rom, correct?
Also just in case, is there a method to recover from soft bricks, and go back to complete stock for warranty purposes?
thank you for the help, I appreciate it.

Yes, you can follow that, or if you want, I just flashed CWM in ODIN, then I flashed the Superuser update (instead of flashing the already rooted ROM).
Don't forget to Nandroid! That can help for soft bricks, so long as you can get back into Recovery.
From there you can flash any ROM you want, just make sure that you follow the instructions in the ROM's OP (wiping caches, etc)
Afterwards, if you do get soft bricks, here is the stock recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319830
and the stock kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311229
If you ever need to unroot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323878
I think I may be missing something, but I can't remember what it is.
Hope this helps!

That tutorial should work.
After you have cwm installed, you are good to go on a new rom install. Remember, only install roms for the Tmobile version GS2 , you will brick if you try a rom for the other GS2 models.
About soft bricks, just do the tutorial correctly and you won't need to recover a soft brick.

Lol, thank you guys. I'm not that big of a noob to try to flash a rom for a different phone onto my phone.

after you install CWM you need to flash the superuser.zip

There's a few people floating around here that's done it. And bricked.

I used the one click method to root and ROM manager that I downloaded from the market to install clock work recovery. Super easy and fast.

The way I understand it, that's not needed if the rom includes the super user apk.

When you wipe the data for each ROM(in CWM) when you're flashing it frees up the system partition to be used for the ROM you're trying to flash.

The most simple solution will be to back app your apps, wipe data, cache, dalvick and system. Install a T989 ROM. In the dev section they have fully stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM. Flash superuser to get root if needed. Reinstall apps. (Be sure not reinstall any thing google releated) Your good!!

If you have a nandroid backup of your stock ROM just restore your nandroid. If you don't have a nandroid of your stock ROM search for stock ROM in the dev area and flash that one, and you will be back to stock root. I think we have a flashable stock ICS ROM, and an ODIN flashable as well.

App backup is easy with a helper app like titanium back up. Wiping of all sorts takes place in recovery (cwm or twrp)

Take the apk file from a stock ROM, then push it over using ADB. Should be found in the /system/app/ folder of the zip file of the stock ROMs.

I hate to come off sounding rude but everything you need to do any of what you are asking is located in the first sticky in the General section. Where it says [[ INDEX ] .☆.☆.☆. SEARCH HERE 1st .☆.☆.☆. most wanted topics, FAQ]] and |REF| Your One-Stop-Shop for rooting, roms, kernels, tools and themes!|UPDATED!| 8|12 If you would simply read and research instead of asking people to step by step it for you, you will find that you are actually probably resourceful enough to figure out the basics on your own. My advice would be to reflash a stock ROM and re-root and try again with the version of Google now that works for our arm devices.. Good luck!

Which zip would not flash in recovery?
The only zip you will flash in recovery is team epic root from recovery. And it must be flashed in the recovery that was installed with Odin.
If you let the phone restart after flashing recovery in Odin the custom recovery will be replaced by the stock recovery.

As a TOTAL noob: appreciate the easy explanation! Waiting to do this myself, but have a few quick questions first. I've done a lot of reading up on rooting but I'm still not entirely clear on a few things so I'm hoping someone can explain it to me like I'm five:
1. Can I accept over-the-air updates from Sprint on a rooted phone? i.e. when they push Android 4.2. If not, do I unroot and reroot to update? Do I have to uninstall everything?
2. Is there something I need to install after doing this? I previously rooted an HTC EVO and remember having to install Superuser immediately after. Anything similar here? Looking to ultimately run wifi tether so any advice toward that end would be greatly appreciated.
3. I'm a little confused about rooting/flashing and some basic definitions. Are they the same thing? I hear a lot about CyanogenMod - what is it and is it coming into play here?
Thanks so much!!

This is not going to be a straight up yes or no answer. If an update comes ota to your phone, you will be able to receive it providing you:
1. reflash stock recovery before accepting it.
2. haven't flashed a custom rom
3. haven't removed any required software. The ota will look for certain software and files. if the required software and files aren't present the ota will fail
None of this should concern you though. There are ALWAYS ways to get the updates while being rooted
2. Is there something I need to install after doing this? I previously rooted an HTC EVO and remember having to install Superuser immediately after. Anything similar here? Looking to ultimately run wifi tether so any advice toward that end would be greatly appreciated.
These instructions seem like you are doing many things. You aren't. There are really only 5 steps. I just broke all the steps down in detail. Really all this is:
1. Downloading all the files to your computer
2. Installing your Samsung Drivers to your computer
3. Copying one file to your phones sd or external sd card. (Team_Epic Root_From Recovery)
4. Flashing CWM Recovery to your phone with Odin.
5. Flashing TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip with CWM Recovery
The Team Epic File that you are flashing in recovery installs superuser, busy box, and in addition removes two files needed to make recovery stick.
3. I'm a little confused about rooting/flashing and some basic definitions. Are they the same thing? I hear a lot about CyanogenMod - what is it and is it coming into play here?
Rooting is really nothing more than giving you the user, the right to access root or system files. It has very little to do with flashing as you can flash updates with stock recovery.
Flashing is simply installing something in a tar, img, or zip format. tar files are flashed with Odin, zips are flashed from recovery and img files are flashed or pushed with adb (Android Debug Bridge)or fastboot.
Cyanogen is a rom. roms are very simply the phones operating system and user interface. They're called roms because their files are kept on read only memory. There are many roms out there for our phone.
Awesome, appreciate the prompt response - thanks so much!!
Thanks!
Thanks for putting this together. My new gs3 arrives tomorrow and I have already prepped my computer with your files in anticipation.
I'll report back how it works out.
Thanks again!
One more thing
When I do get my phone should I activate it first or root it first or does it matter?
I know it voids the warranty but I guess I could unroot to take it in for service if needed?
Thanks again.

I would activate it.
This works with the 4.1 update, correct?
I previously had the Galaxy S1 (Epic) and went through several custom ROMs before finally going back to a stable release with root because of dissatisfaction with the ROMs. My phone never really returned to perfect functionality after this experimentation, and always had some buggy glitches and many FC's. Now that I have a perfectly running GS3 with Android 4.1, I would love to be able to wifi tether and install apps like adblock and Titanium Backup Pro, but I am hesitant because of my past experience.
Do you think there is any reason at all that simply doing this root procedure would change the functionality of my perfectly smooth-running GS3?

[Q] How do I ditch cm10?

alrighty then. I have been playing with my phone for about 2 hours now trying to figure out how to get rid of CM10 so I can flash a new ROM. (had to find dev options etc.) I tried flashing a recovery image through the SGS tool kit, still had CM10. I tried re-rooting (not advised, had a small stroke while figuring out if I bricked or soft bricked) I just did a system wipe, also ill advised, it warned me that I had no OS (thats why we make nandroids like good lil boys and girls.)
For the love of Jeebus someone please tell me how to get CM10 off of my phone so I can flash a new ROM. can I un-root and re-root and start from scratch that way? is that proper? is there an easier way? Why am I asking all these questions?! (because no matter what, I will always be a NooB -.-')
I appreciate any insight you guys can give me, thanks in advance!

need help going back almost stock

Hey ppl
We'll I finally ended up giving my wife my t989..I have it rooted running Jedi jelly..here's the thing she wants it stock completely...I could just do a factory reset and unroot it with Odin but r computer is in the ****ters at the moment..so my plan is to install a stock ROM ...keep it still rooted but I need a stock ROM with the all tmobole BS cause she uses all that...anyone know of a stock ROM i could just flash on recovery ..
Well developers tend to make stock ROMs without any bloatware (t mobile apps) with root access. But they add tweaks on it and root it. So I think it would be hard for you to get a stock ROM that you could flash with bloatwares. Ask someone for a backup of their stock ROM and maybe you could back that up in you phone?
Or you might even get lucky and might find a stock ROM for your phone on threads named under you phone!
My second bet would be, flash a ROM that's almost stock (meaning all the mobile bloatwares will be gone) and then install all the bloatware from the play store. Good luck.

As far as I know, all T-Mobile apps are available on the Play Store.
At least, My Account is, and that's 100% of the useful T-Mobile apps.

Did you have any luck yet?? When I rooted this phone a couple weeks back I made a backup of the ROM before I even touched it. Should still have all the bloat on there. I could try to post it if you're interested

There are plenty of guides on installing twrp or cwm recovery. After that there are hundreds of threads on flashing a ROM.

Alright I'm interested in getting this rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684
Is it safe for my phone since most of the roms are for the I9300. The model i have is i747.
Or should I go with Cyanogen and same rules applies, I wanna make sure it's compatible for my device.
You said i need to install twrp or cwm recovery?
Not sure what's this for?
What are those two?
Thank you.

absolutely do NOT ever flash an international i9300 ROM to your phone. you will end up with a very expensive paperweight.
only flash ROMs specifically for the i747 (d2att).
the one you linked will work perfectly. its actually what I'm on at the moment and is a great and stable ROM

Ok I keep hearing i need cwm or twrp recovery before i get started. Please help me instal this and I will leave this alone lol.
I have had bad experience in my past.
So I just finished rooting the galaxy successfully and installed "TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5" after that I rebooted and I believe my next step is to get the cwm or twrp recovery right? and after that then I can instal that rom?
Where do I get the right recovery software for i747?

That's correct. The easiest way to install is download GooManager from they play store.
Open the app and grant permissions when you are asked. Touch the menu key, and select Install OpenRecoveryScript
Wait for it to say successful and youre done. Shut down the phone, hold volume up + home + power and you will enter TWRP.
From here you can flash ROMs (and make backups )

Go the play store, download the app goo manager. Open the app, hit your menu button and select to install an open recovery script. And boom, you have installed TWRP.
I'd recommend lots of reading and researching before flashing.

Done.
So now I guess my next step is flashing the rom Task650.
Anything I should be aware before?
There's a newer version 4.2.2 is it safe?
Ok anything else?

Nope you should be all set. 4.2.2 (02/23) build is the most stable and safest.
Download the 2/23 version. Download the 12/19/12 gapps.
Put the files in the root of your phone.
Boot to recovery. Select Backup and swipe to make a backup of your current ROM in case you ever want to go back to the stock ROM.
Then go back to the main menu of twrp and select wipe. Once in that menu, wipe the following: cache, dalvik, factory reset and system.
Go back to the main menu again and select install.
Locate the zip file you downloaded (the ROM) and then select it. A new screen will pop, select add more zips. Select the gapps and then swipe to install.
reboot and youre done. =)

I see the pink horse and all that animation but it stays in the "swagger activated" it's been like this since minutes...
Hmm... I did one step wrong... I selected wipe then system, I didn't selected the other options cache and dalvik.
Can I reset taking out battery and redo this steps?
-----
UPDATE!
So I did had to take out the battery and redo all steps this time making sure i wiped all cache, dalvik, factory reset and system. I proceeded to install find the rom and then when done I installed gapps.
Ok now it did the job I'm now filling in options after the horse loading.
Thank you all!
